It seems every time my boyfriend goes into the store, he is able to find what he's looking for at this particular location. As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted with a welcoming and then followed up by a question of is there anything that we can help you find. Once we got to the shoe department the associate working that area followed up with making sure that we were OK and asking if we needed any shoe sizes My boyfriend was able to find a similar work boot comparable to what he was replacing and it was on sale. I called Big 5 on March and asked if they had a specific shoe and size in stock. The gentleman was great, he checked and said yes then asked if I'd like him to put it on hold up front, I said yes. I arrived at the store 15 minutes later, a woman was sitting in a chair right up front and greeted us. I went in the back to look for the shoe, there was no associate that I could see after waiting for 5 minutes and several people waiting. I realized he said it was on hold upfront so I walked up front and the cashier was busy helping a man and woman whom were together, so I asked the associate who previously greeted us and was sitting by the front door if she could help. She said no, she's not allowed to leave the chair. I waited for the cashier who was waiting for the man to pull out his cash and he was taking long because the girl he was with was on the phone while Simultaneously distracting the guy who is trying to pull out his money. All the while the cashier is sitting there ignoring me, I could clearly see she could see me. After 7 minutes of the cashier doing nothing she turns to me and says can I help you, I said, "I called earlier and a guy told me he would leave my shoes upfront on hold", she said ok and the guy finally got his money out and she begin helping him again. After he paid the girl he was with and the cashier started talking for another few minutes. After the customers left, the cashier got on a speaker phone and said to bring up the shoes on hold for me. After I waited for another 5-7 minutes, I was annoyed and went in the back to just ask for another pair of shoes. I waited back there for another 5 to 7 minutes and no one was there. So we left, called the Big 5 in Lodi, and we spent our money there. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. I'll break it down like this. One Star for having great deals. One star for now selling Dickies and Two stars for cashier Maegan. So tonight I was window shopping for gym stuff and looking around for football gear for my son who's a Freshman now. Also checking out the racquetball gear, since I play the game at my local gym. I usually get most of our stuff here. So tonight I was trying to find help and looking around. But it seems the sales floor associates were just chilling. I had to approach them and ask where are the gym bags. I did get pointed in the right direction. But I didn't like the fact, that I had to approach and engage the conversation. Some better coaching can easily fix that problem. They sell all sorts of sports items here. But like , said earlier I mainly come for those items. Big 5 has really good sales, especially on the shoes. So check your Sunday add and see for yourself :) As I walked up to the front counter. I only bought a gym bag. The cashier was under seiged. Taking phone calls after phone call and trying to run the register all by herself. I could clearly hear all the drama, that was going on. Not only that but a customer who was in front of me who looked like she was getting impatient. I'll leave it at that :) Finally it was my turn, I really thought this girl was gonna be rude to me. Signed up to get their emails so I can get 10% off and because I couldn't access my emails on my phone (no service), the manager (when asked by cashier) said he couldn't honor that discount. I have to say that the level of professionalism in this business is most definently lacking. So, I go for a bike ride to Big5 sporting goods on March lane. Upon arrival I start to lock up my bike in front of the store. Not even done locking my bike I get confronted by the stores security gaurd telling me "Dont get too comfortable." "You won't be going into the store." He volunteered the information that his current manager had stated to him that "he is not allowed in the store". I kinda laugh at him a bit, thinking for some reason that he was joking. No, he was not. I asked him "why?" "What are you talking about?" "Why?" Then, while all this is going on in front of customers and the staff of Big5 he asked me to remove my hat that I was wearing. I lift up my hat and he states to me, "Oh. Your not the guy." Cleary just s case of mistaken identity. He then tells me that I can at that point go into the store. So I did, and when I was helped at the cashier's desk I asked the woman, "are you a manager?" She stated "yes." I then asked her "are you the manager that said that I was not coming in this store?" She said "NO." So I asked her if she could tell me who it is that would have made that decision saying that I was not allowed in the store. She replied with "I dont know, maybe the store manager." She then hand me my receipt and attempted to send me on my way. So I asked her "How can I speak to this store manager?" With the security guard standing in front of us, I turn to him and ask "What manager told you that I could not be in the store?" He then pointed to the woman who just made my sale and stated "She is the one there" so I ask her "wait a sec, you just said it was the other manager" so I ask the security again "are you sure this is the one who told you "and he started to say "yes for sure it is her" the manager woman stops him dead in his tracks and tells him "it's okay, we already talked about this." WHOA wait a sec... No we did not. It started off with me just wanting some kind of apology for being made look like a thief or something like that. This store is the only store that carrys what I buy there. And that sucks. The level of professionalism and the lack of accountability sucks in this store. Big5 staff, you all need to work on your people skills. If you dont like working there then go get a other job. Or hey, if your outside life sucks so bad that your work life is affected by it then get a job where you are not working with the public. Big five is in arguably the worst shopping center in regards to businesses going belly up annually. However, big 5 is still there for good reason. What is this reason? Well, It's The Sales!! I personally love buying new knives, hunting gear, and camping gear for a fraction of the cheapest prices not only in town but online as well! The Cons: The shoe selection ranges from ugly to offensively unattractive. I sometimes wonder who decided to manufacture these shoes. But, they will cover your feet. I admit it, I don't work out as much as i need to. But since copeland has been out of business a while, I've resorted back to this little sporting goods store hidden in a shopping center of nothings. I love the way this store does business. Perhaps it because they're never busy when I'm in. Perhaps it's because the economy has tanked. Perhaps it's because I'm a good looking lad...j/k. But all their employees are genuinely nice. All my running shoes has been through this one store, and I admit, i keep coming back for the good service, and genuine human appreciation factor. Even the managers are nice. The genuine type of nice. It seems that if they're headed to that corner office and notice you looking at the gun/knife case, they're willing to help you and not call another employee over. Perhaps it's to dissuade possible thieves, but it's amazing to see what kind of customer service skills they have here. I couldn't think of a better store to shop at locally. God I cannot believe this place is still here. Growing up in Stockton back in the day meant hunting (baiting rabbits), and fishing. I was lucky enough to have an aunt with a sugar beet farm. I did plenty of both. This place is fully stocked with all types of ammo and fishing gear. Decent selection of guns, they wanted $1000 for a vintage M1 carbine. It was in decent shape. Authentic. Never held one of these before. If you thought a m-16 was compact these are tiny. Check this place out. See if they have anything on special left. Cause I got 1st! read more

I usually go here when I need sporting items quick or when the items are out of stock online. But the last time I went, it was horrible and it led me to write this review. I came in for an air mattress with my young kids. No one greeted me and that was ok. I asked where it was at and a girl directed me to the back. I took awhile back there checking the sku number to see if the items I found online matched (the items online was different in store then it was advertise online). The OG Stockton sporting goods store. They've been around for as long as I can remember and the sales are constantly going on here. Want a stylish and sharp pocket knife for under $15? They have them here. Looking for a decent pair of hiking boots for around $20? They also have them here. Need some other random piece of sporting equipment you'll only need to use a few times a year? Also here. Frankly, anything you need that is sporting/camping/shoe related can be found here at a decent price. I'm also a fan of Sport's Authority (huge store), but Big 5 usually has them beat in price for the most part (although the selection is much smaller). The store can seem in dissaray at time (especially if near a holiday weekend), but just be patient and get a staff member to assist you and it will be fine. read more

A cashier named Sidni was extremely rude to me a couple of weeks ago, I think some time in 5/15/19. I was asking for a price check on an item and she said, "You keep on asking and asking for price-check everyday!!!" At first I thought she was just joking around so I said, "Yes because yesterday it was $20 and now it's $25." Then she says, "Well that's too bad you didn't get the deal." And she still kept going off on me! I was so shocked I didn't know what to say. The store wasn't busy at all. How hard is it to do a price check? I'm a paying customer. It's not like each time I've gone there I didn't buy anything. That's literally her job to help me. I just asked for the manager who just happened to be walking in, and I also asked that manager to give the cashier a proper write-up or some kind of reprimand. I'm not sure if anything was done. The customer service by I believe his name was paul was awesome he wasn't rude answered all my questions and made me feel comfortable purchasing there. On 06/17/2011 I visited the Stockton California Big5. Went into the store knowing what exactly what I wanted (Remington/Savage rifle). I am a first time hunter, so any or little advice would and could help. Approached the gun counter. I was greeted by an unhappy associate. I asked her if she knew anything about rifles, she replied "no". so I was still okay with that. Thinking I could take my time, no other customers present. My intentions were to buy the Savage, $500 rifle. The whole time Im getting adjusted to the rifle, she just starring me. Im feeling uncomfortable for the simple fact that she is not talkative nor pushing to sell the rifle. So I feel my money isnt wanted, and she has more important things to do rather than help me. I then asked her to put the Remington and Savage side by side for length comparisons. She replied "NO!" but didnt explain why. I literally laughed and left immediately. So a few thing wrong here, she wasnt friendly. Im not asking a sales rep. to discuss their personal lives with me, but making a customer feel welcomed is important especially in a down economy. Second she was not knowledgeable in any rifles. Yes I know, she ha the potential of learing about them, but im sorry she wont with that type of attitude. I spoke with manager over the phone after the fact and explained how I was not satisfied with the no help girl I encountered. I made it clear that Im not doing this to get anyone held accountable for their actions because to me this was more like a training and education issue. So I wanted to share my experiences. This was the second time I received poor customer service at Big 5 in Stockton Ca in the past few months. Again I reside in Stockton. What does it take to get some assistance here? They had 2 male on the shoe section. My father, bf, and me were never greeted or approached while the non-Asians around us were given exceptional service. It's like we were invisible. I used to frequent this establishment since I was a child up until now. We were also about to purchase a pair of Nikes until I realized that I might as well take my business elsewhere because I work hard for my money. Off to Sports Authority we went and they even did a price match for us! The 2 female cashiers overheard me playfully saying,"NO SERVICE OVER HERE!" to my boyfriend and she just ignored it. They were chatting away while the associates at the shoe section ignored us. there were 5-6 workers and it was a slow day. NO ONE SAID HI. My bf, father, and me are not hard to please at all. I once work in a retail dealing with shoes and I managed to give each and everyone of my customers my undivided attention no matter how busy it was. I'm NEVER, EVER coming here again.
