To the sales person at Big Five today at 12:30, and I use the word loosely, grudgingly came to the checkout, told me "other side" stared at the cash I put out for her like she didn't know what that was, then shoved my shirt into a bag, then couldn't figure out how to put the cash amount into the register ($17.26, I gave her $20.26) had to call an assistant manager to help her ( he also said nothing to me) I want to thank her for reminding there are plenty of other places to shop so I never have to come back. read more

Amazing experience with a young lady at the cash register the other night. First off I went it late near closing time which isn't something I normally do. I ran in to buy a couple of basketballs for the Special Olympics basketball team to donate since I had noticed that the coach spent a lot of time that evening having to air up many of the basketballs over an over throughout practice. Since these sports are free to the athletes I thought as a parent this is the least I could do with the money that would have been spent on any other sports programs. I was on a mission to find bright yellow shoe laces. Big 5 was my 3rd stop in Woodland to find the pair I want. I walk in and a few employees walk by me and no one greeted me. Ok, no big deal. I walk to the back of the store because I figured the that's where the laces where. I found the ones I liked, but didn't find the length I was looking for. I see a sales rep walk towards me pretty quick. As he's about to pass me, I stop him and ask him about having anymore laces maybe in the back. He doesn't answer me and looks like someone is waiting for him in the back or he was in the middle of something. Since he's not saying anything to me besides a blank stare, I tell him "maybe what you have up here is all you have". He agrees and walks to the back. He didn't say "I'll be right with you, I'm busy" "let me check inventory" .. nada! I quickly left. You don't want my business, not a problem. Next i went to Famous Footwear and they found for me what I was looking for. Their new sales staff is awesome and I even walked out with a pair of new pumas! The Big 5 in Woodland is larger than the one in Davis so for me it's worth the extra gasoline and time to drive to Woodland for a better chance of finding shoes and other items in my size. I had great success just today in getting my favorite slippers on clearance with my size in stock. When I first purchased a pair in the Davis store they had to special order it because they didn't have my size. read more

This is a great store and normally the staff and managers are amazing. My only complaint is that if there are more than 2 people in line at the firearms desk you can expect to be there for a very very long time. Many times I've gone in and left after waiting on line for a very long time. They could use help with efficiency in the firearms dept. I have had to sit and wait in line to find out if they even have whatever ammo or item I'm looking for. read more

While grocery shopping, I decided to swing by here to See if the store had any Mosin Nagant (Old Russian Surplus) rifles. They had one, and it looked like it was in relatively good condition--which isn't all that common. The employees were quite nice, but appeared to have been given rather strange directions by their manager. I was told that I couldn't handle the rifle, because it was store policy to keep it locked up. Having visited several gun stores in the past, I can say as a matter of fact this is not normal. Not allowing customers to inspect merchandise is not the way to run a business. The employees here were *really* friendly. But the management seems totally unfamiliar with the idea of what a store does: showcase and sell merchandise. read more

I came in the morning and brought my 3 year old daughter with me to the store. She wanted to bring in her Elsa and Anna dolls with her so I let her to keep her occupied while I look for some dumbbells. When we walked in there was an older white male cashier maybe late 50s early 60s age. He saw us walk into the store. He asked me if I needed any help to ask him. So, I asked him where the dumbbells were and he told me in the back to the left. I found them and decided to purchase a pair of 10 lbs of dumbbells which was $18.99 each. I proceeded to go to the register it was the same older man. As I was paying for the dumbbells my daughter saw some cabbage patch baby in front. Being a child she got excited and put her dolls down. She grabbed the cabbage patch baby to play with it while we were in the store. I immediately saw what she was doing and put them back so we can leave. Now after I put them away I went to my car which I parked up front the same older cashier came outside confronted me and told me "Come here". I was confused on what he wanted I responded back "Yes?" He didn't even say anything and just pointed at my daughter. Then I had realized that he thought that we stole her Frozen dolls from the store. I had told him that those dolls were hers. I understand not everybody in the world has seen Frozen but the fact of the matter is that her dolls don't even look brand new they are dirty and their hair is all messed up. So for him to think that she took the brand new cabbage patch baby leaves me speechless. You saw us enter the store with them! Why the hell would I purchase $40 worth of dumbbells then let my child walk out the store with a stolen doll. read more

Took my son in to buy airsoft guns. He asks a lot of questions and they really have no clue about the stuff they have which would be fine if they were actually interested in finding out instead of being bothered by having to find out. Some employees are very nice and others do need to work on customer sevice skills. Its a hit and miss with these employees. read more

We've been here SEVERAL times and have been brushed off, not helped not even the manager cared to offer any type of assistance. The one worker John was so rude and seemed like I was a burden to be there! I got there right when they opened at 10, and knew exactly what I needed! I got everything which was kind of an expensive purchase. The line was extremely long and I only found out their computer system was down after I got to the register to pay. They had to do everything by hand, if I would've known when I first walked in I wouldn't have wasted my time as I had somewhere to be by 11. When I thought I was all set to go they had to call my card company to make sure my purchase would go through as it was over $100, I finally said put it on hold! I will most likely go back for my items but due to the rude customer service I am posting this so he knows how NOT to treat customers! Today was my first time at this Big 5. I've been going to Big 5s since childhood; let me tell you that's a whole heck of a lot of years. I needed water shoes and uv swim shirts. I found them easily and they were on sale. Bonus. The cashier was matter of fact, not rude but not friendly either. But one weird thing. After she gave me my receipt, she took a roll of quarters and smashed them on the counter right next to me. That woke the heck out of me. As a former employee here, I can say that Theodore S's comments have nothing to do with the quality of business. He is upset because he was terminated from this store, for what I will not say. However, I will say this. I spent a good deal of my working adult life working for this store, and they have some great people working there. I am a fan for three reasons. One, it is conveniently located off Interstate 5. Two, my husband and I are returning customers. Time and time again, this store has had all the items we were looking for in stock. Three, employees are very helpful. They've gone out of their way to stock check items without making us feel like we were inconveniencing them. On our last trip, we were shopping for specific punching bags which were not out on the floor. Tiffany wheeled out both bags, which were packaged in huge card board boxes so we could examine them and decide which one we were going to purchase. She is a petite gal, but had no complaints bringing out the heavy punching bags and even offered to help us with loading it into the car. It is this type of customer service along with reasonable prices that keeps us coming back, even though there are couple of Big 5's that are close to our house. read more

To the smug manager who thought that I was wrong about asking for ID while using my MasterCard credit card. he insisted he was right and in fact he was wrong. But his attitude certainly has me not ever coming back. So to you, Mr. Manager, here's what the law says: "Both Visa and MasterCard prohibit merchants from requiring customer ID as a condition for accepting their credit or debit cards. All you need is a signed card, and of course the signatures must match. American Express says it doesn't ban merchants from requiring customer ID, though it discourages the practice." This is written in the agreement between the merchant and the card company. You invaded my privacy when you ask for my ID. If you feel that the card I am using is in fact not mine or being used fraudulently, you can ask me to sign my name on a piece of paper and compare it with the card. If the card has not been signed you can require me to sign it before using it. But again, you can't ask for ID even if I signed it at the moment of purchase unless you feel the card is being used fraudulently. So before you get in a disagreement with a customer, perhaps you should've said "I didn't know that. I will check with our corporate office." If your corporate office requires you to check ID, then they are breaking the law. And going against the agreement with the card company. I will report your store's unlawful actions to the credit card company. Now you know. read more

Decent and reliable sporting goods store. We were there last night to buy a batting helmet, cleats, and an equipment bag for our son who is transitioning from t-ball to coach-pitch farm league. He's very excited. The store is small but they try to pack in a lot of inventory, which can make it look a little messy. The staff were very nice but almost checked on us too much. I guess it's a fine balance between service and scaring people away. Their pricing is reasonable for the most part. We could get everything cheaper online, but often times it's helpful to be able to look and touch an item before buying. Like with the batting helmet, I had no clue what size our son would need, but we tried on a range of helmets and the one he liked also had the best fit. Coupons are frequently available in the news paper but we did not have one last night. There is a current 10% back up to a single $100 purchase through Visa Signature with Bank of America. read more

I bought a couple of guns there in the past but i will be taking my business elsewhere to avoid dealing with that condescending tool. The prices are fairly high unless you get something on sale. I was looking at a bbq set there that was on sale for 20 bucks even thought it "retails at 50" found the exact same set online for 10 bucks. I'm sure this is common with many of their items.
