Big Bad Breakfast is one of those restaurants that really have a sterling reputation. Only open for breakfast and lunch, it is considered to be a must stop to eat while visiting Oxford. One reason? It's part of the John Currence empire of food places that are so popular. Located less than 1 mile from The Square it sits in a shopping center rather quiet and unassuming. That changes when there is a big Oxford or Ole Miss event when throngs of people invade it. Last week I popped in on a quiet Wednesday in June for breakfast. The waiter told me that the most popular breakfast item was the BBB skillet so I ordered it. The meal consists of 3 scrambled eggs with ham, bacon, potatoes, cheese and sausage. The food arrived about 10-15 minutes later. My first impression was that it was a lot of food. Seriously, you need your MAN pants on to eat all of this meal. I thought it was very good with plenty of content including meat. It came with a delicious biscuit. Eat this meal for breakfast and you will most likely skip lunch! My table service was good. I enjoyed my visit and would be happy to return. Next time I would like to try a lunch item. I guess that's okay at a place named Big Bad Breakfast! After eating at the City Grocery the night before, we decided to enjoy Sunday brunch at their sister restaurant. We weren't disappointed. Cheryl started with the breakfast crumble. This was a southern mixture of all that is good. A crumbled. Buttermilk biscuit, grits, tomato gravy (don't knock it till you try it), fresh crumbled bacon, topped with poached eggs and green onions. I had the redneck Benny, eggs Benedict with country ham on a fresh biscuit, topped with hollandaise or sausage gravy. As if this wouldn't be enough to send us into a food coma we decided to share an order of blueberry pancakes, topped with strawberries and whipped cream. Why you ask? Because the food was incredible. This was a southern brunch above other brunches. There is a reason these restaurants are run by a James Beard award winning chef. The worst thing we left was, the knowledge there is one in our backyard of Nashville and we had no idea. How dare they hide this southern gem in our own hometown. Cheers! read more

I'm not much into breakfast and much prefer brunch and lunch. Fortunately this joint does provide options to satisfy my requirements. The biggest downside is Oxford's insanely stupid alcohol laws and you can't buy any of the alcoholic drinks before 10am here so no early booze brunching is allowed. This is a VERY popular joint in Oxford even during the weekdays and it starts hopping right from the opening at 7am. The service is very attentive and they take good care of you and make sure your drinks stay full and you have all that you need. If you are part of the Breakfast Club and want to indulge in the usual breakfast fare along with quite a number of kicked up and BAMed items then this should totally float your boat. Really disappointed with this experience. Went to Oxford with a girlfriend and to see an Ole Miss game. This restaurant is the basically the only place in town. We placed our party of 2 on the waitlist and we're told it would be about an hour. After and hour and a half we came to the hostess to check for a status. They missed our names and dropped us from the waitlist without contacting us. We then waited another 45 minutes. On seated we were bumped into several times by servers, our coffee was cold, the menu is bad, and the prices are very high. The food was like bad airplane food, unimpressive and lukewarm, thrown in a fryer or microwave and slapped in front of us. So disappointed in this experience. read more

My last visit required a short wait which is to be expected from one of the best breakfast spots on a weekend. Even though my party arrived well into a busy day the kitchen and wait staff took great care of us quickly and served up some hot and delicious southern classics. My personal favorite item was the Cathead biscuit, which had a homemade biscuit with a piece of fried chicken on top, smothered in traditional sausage gravy and fresh shredded cheddar cheese. They absolutely knocked it out of the park. Cannot sing the praises of the server taking care of us enough as even on a busy weekend still was able to make us feel at home and really enjoy our visit. Don't go anywhere for breakfast in Oxford but here! Big Bad Breakfast does everything right. Walking in feels like you're going back in time, complete with a lunch counter right next to all of the action. Their biscuits are exactly how they should be and they have bottles of homemade jam lining the tables so you can choose just the right amount of whatever you please. I highly recommend adding a side of the tomato gravy to anything you order, I promise it will take it to the next level. Their bloody mary's are also perfection and coffee is served in an iconic BBB mug that you'll want to buy to take home and remember the memories. One downside - it tends to be crowded with a wait but they're pretty efficient and overall the wait is not too bad unless you have a large group. read more
