This store is a neighborhood gem. Formerly on W 72nd street, they've now moved up to W 79th. They have an incredible selection of "accessories" including purses, backpacks, wallets, suitcases gloves, scarves, jewelry and more. I've purchased a suitcase as well as several backpacks and purses from them over the years and have found the owners and staff to be very helpful and knowledgeable. When I was looking to replace the MZWallace backpack I bought from them a few years back (after 2+ years of daily use it was time for a new one) I popped into Big Bag to buy a replacement. They had the style I wanted but did not have the color so the owner offered to order it for me. A few days later I got a text from Big Bag saying my backpack was in and ready for pickup. Easy peasy. I've visited this store before and always loved browsing for various bags. Today I went in with the intention of buying a bag but I left empty-handed. Talk about pushy sales. This lady refused to leave me alone; that's until the very end. As customary, she came by and asked what I was looking for. I told her that I'm extremely picky when choosing a bag and that I prefer to just browse to get a sense of everything they had. So, she came by within a few seconds to recommend some bags. I liked them, she had me try them out and look in the mirror. I wasn't too keen on them. She then continuously kept on recommending me bags and I nixed all her recommendations. I had mentioned I was interested in sturdy nylon bags earlier but I got side-tracked as I really loved a leather bag they had. The salewoman proceeded to tell me, "well, that's not nylon," to suggest that it was too expensive for me. Funny, cause I never mentioned price range. She then proceeded to tell me that they just don't have anything for me and that I should come back. Didn't I say I was picky about choosing a bag and that I'd rather browse? I asked her if they're closing right that second. She said no. So I continued to browse. She finally got the hint and started helping another woman; someone who she didn't even bother to address until the woman went to her. I guess this sales lady had it out for me. I took a good browse, saw some bags I liked, and got the brand names and will buy them elsewhere. read more

This used to be one of my favorite local stores on 72nd. I just went into the location on 77th. The store was empty and the sales woman was on her phone, loud and obviously annoyed dealing with a personal return issue from Amazon. She paused, made a rude comment to me and my daughter - rudely asked if we needed help and then went about her phone call. I am very disappointed to see such poor service in a formerly beloved neighborhood store. Their selection is unique but prices are too high for such poor service. Unlikely I'll return or go out of my way to go back. read more

Wallets and bags are so personal. "Big Bag" has a marvelously curated selection. Made the mistake of going to Tumi, Nordstrom, and Bloomie's first - then remembered this terrific little shop with a big selection. While I was perusing the wallets (mine had been stolen the day before), not only were the proprietors helpful - so were some other loyal Big Bag shoppers who happened into the store while I was there. As previous reviewers have noted, this store benefits from an attentive, helpful staff. And it has a terrific selection of luggage - brands I didn't know about, and others I've seen very well reviewed online. The bonus is how attractive everything in the shop is, as clearly they select for aesthetics as well as quality. There are lots of travel and purse accessories that are just ... well, a lot of fun. I got a bright luggage tag that makes me smile every time I look at it. Found a v. good suitcase, not "cheap," but Big Bag charged me much less than the lowest prices at the various luggage websites, and I could wheel it right home. I've already traveled w/ it once and it proved to be worth the cost. read more

This is a huge, huge store, with one of the best selections of midpriced bags I have ever seen. The brands are excellent. You're not going to find a Marc Jacobs purse here, but you can find great backpacks, luggage, overnight totes, cute evening purses, and they also carry a small but chic line of accessories like earrings. I really enjoyed discovering this shop. I bought a Baggolini small backpack for schlepping around the city last fall that was the best investment I ever made. Well, actually, my Merrell sandals I got to bring to Paris in April were the best investment I ever made, but this is a close second. read more

Loved this place when it was on 8th St; purchased a couple of things from them. What a pretty little (narrow) store on 72 and Amsterdam, The proprietors are lovely and they have a great selection of leather goods and jewelry. They are one of the few who carry the french jewelry designer, MIRAVIDI. GO and buy, its worth it. read more

I stumbled across this store by accident after a walk in Central Park and fell completely in love. They have so many different brands, colors, and styles of bags that I had a hard time picking out just one bag. I ended up choosing the cutest violet/gray lambskin Zin bag ever and use it all the time. The staff was super helpful and didn't get sick of me taking so long to make a decision. There's no pressure at all and they work with you to find the bag you want. I happened in here while picking up a library book from the performing arts branch of the NYPL because I was looking for a weekend travel bag. the place, which is much bigger than its storefront appears, seems family-owned, and the store attendants were attentive without being pushy, which usually scares me a bit in stores that sell this type of consumable. they had a huge selection of good-quality items, i picked up a few other things in addition to a zip suitcase, including a pair of earrings for a cousin. read more
