The theater is kind of a death trap. Even in the seats for the audience, the flooring alternates…read morebetween spongey and hard. The seats have a surprising extra bit of recline. The walkway is awkwardly carved into the floor, with an inch or two of raised, spongey flooring you could trip over. But, if we're talking backstage? Oh, my God. Someone please contact the fire department. There are hundreds of loose boards, many of which are all just leaning precariously against a wall, possibly even with nails attached. There are random bits of junk everywhere. Sawhorses, folding chairs, props and costumes. There is hardly room to walk through at all. The people who are involved with this place are kind of cult like. As best as I can determine, most of them lead fairly pathetic lives. They largely work minimum wage jobs. The one thing these actors/directors/chairs have going for them is their involvement with community theater. It is their sole source of joy, what they really live for, even though most of these people don't earn one red cent from singing or acting here. It wouldn't be so bad, except they take it far too seriously. I ended up quitting a show after I dared to criticize a director (note: their directors change with each individual show, with the title passed around incestuously amongst a small group of involved theater people). Part of my criticism was that the actors were only doing the show for the fun of it, so if she was going to make the show no fun, there was no point in continuing to do it. Reactions were extreme. Pearls were clutched. Theater people passionately defended their fellow theater people. I, exasperated, quit the show and continued with my real life. You know. Where my career is actually important to me, and meaningfully contributes to the world. These are people who passionately proclaim that this ugly, run-down, trashy building is deeply meaningful to them. Never mind that the stage looks like it is made of a bunch of boxes painted together. (Surprisingly, Racine's theater is much classier than Kenosha's). No, the small group of theater nerds who run this place are completely incapable of understanding that the directors they appoint amongst themselves only have imaginary power, in their imaginary worlds. Better to keep your distance from this place.
