We arrived and Janice and Ben greeted us warmly. No, we didn't know them before we came to the restaurant, but as you talk to them before you know you're addressing them on a first name basis. The meal ordered was the ribs, Mac n cheese and collard greens. The ribs were meaty, smoky and delicious! The collard greens were succulent, tender and perfectly seasoned. Ordering macaroni and cheese in a restaurant can be a very dicey move, but in the words of my husband, " It was superb!" The only thing equally as enjoyable as the food was the embracing personalities of it's owners, Janice and Ben. They have so much pride in Jeffersonville and it's rich history, we stayed longer than we attended but after all we felt like we were literally at home. I understand this business has been in the Quartermasters for years. Took the chance while there to try it. Nothing fancy, very basic, that little hole in the wall. Service was cordial and gentleman eating in us was nice. We ordered up 2 large pork bbq sandwiches with slaw and Mac and cheese. Tea was very good and we aren't typically tea drinkers. I dropped in today after smelling the BBQ from the street..I got to speak with a wonderful gent who is the very definition of southern kindness. He talked with me on the menu, helped me pick the right things out, and made sure I had some of their sauce which is delish. We came to this tiny building in the middle of this plaza. There was a couple behind the counter who I assume were the owners. Very nice people. I ordered ribs with collard greens and baked beans. The ribs are gigantic and so tender. They had a wonderful smoke flavor and very little fat. The collards were excellent and made even better by adding some hot sauce. The beans were on the sweet side, but perfectly cooked and delicious. You can eat outside, inside, carryout or have them cater. If I had any complaint it would be that the inside is fairly jammed up with stuff on one side which makes it look a little cluttered and messy. But all in all it doesn't matter because the food is the main attraction and it is really that good. read more

Situated at the origin of the Historical Black Heritage trail, this is an icon place to visit as well as some good low and slow BBQ. Very tiny unassuming place. Barely enough room for 3 parties. Girlfriend got the pulled chicken with yellow potato salad. I got the brisket platter with corn pudding and Mac n cheese. Both of our meats came in in a big hoagie roll with no sauce. They have sweet and spicy sauces on the table. Her chicken was extremely juicy with a great flavor. Her potato salad was excellent. My corn pudding was sweet like a dessert and was really really good. My Mac n cheese was good too. My brisket was cooked perfectly and had a great smoky flavor. OUTSTANDING RIBS!! The ribs were the tasty meaty flavorful star of the meal. Cooked outside on an old get her done kinda grill, that cooked them perfectly. They also offer burnt tips here. DELICIOUS! French fries were cooked fresh, seasoned and perfect side, they were out of cabbage and the mac was the kind kids love. Tucked into the middle of the off the beaten path and worthy of a visit. I created a yelp account just to leave this yelp review because this place was so outstandingly bad. Now I'm not a snob, I walked into this place and was actually excited about the terrible atmosphere, kinda like a Waffle House sort of thing, if the cooks out back smoking a cigarette when you get there you know the foods about to be amazing. I had similar thoughts on this place. Falling apart, zero professionalism by the guy who took our order, zero customer service skills, but like I said I was optimistic this meant the food was gonna be extra good. Boy was I wrong. Prices were ridiculously high before I even tasted the quality, but after tasting the quality of the food I was even more appalled at the prices. We got the brisket sandwich, the brisket was super dry, zero flavor, hard to swallow down on the pieces that didn't have fat to give them SOME sort of moisture. The bbq sauce served on the side was very disappointing as well. Just meh. If they told me it was Heinz bbq discontinued at Walmart I'd probably believe them. The Mac and cheese definitely was made with a huge block of velveeta. Nothing backyard bbq about it except maybe if your aunt Becky who has no business being in charge of the Mac and cheese is the one placed in charge of the Mac and cheese. Greens were extraordinarily plain, zero seasoning, zero bits of meat, zero spice. Tasted like they were boiled with maybe a little bit of beef bouillon? Very nice guy runs this place. He uses quality ingredients and prepares the food with care. I had pulled pork with almost no fat or gristle. The sauce was well balanced and cooked in. The green beans were well seasoned and tasted great. The Mac n cheese also showed care. You don't have to search for the cheese. Imagine a place where you could stop by a back yard bbq any day you wanted. That is exactly whats happening here. The smoke rolling off of the grill beside this historic building drew me in. I was pleasantly relaxed by nice light jazz and employees that treat you not like customers but more like friends stopping by the house for a Sunday Bbq, except this happens every day. The collards are fresh and leafy. You know that you are eating a plant. Not the squished mush we see in chains where every last drop of life the leaves once had have been lost to salty water. These are leafy, veiny, alive and perfectly spiced. The macaroni and cheese is creamy and fresh. Simple and perfect. The Ribs were fantastic. Smoky, slightly charred and tender so they fall right off the bone. I havent had ribs this good since i made them myself. The owner (i think he is the owner) is extremely cordial and attentive. I am overwhelmed by his kindness and offering me the "bring a friend" special pricing today though i was alone. His smile is huge and i really enjoyed my time here. A very non discript building and easy to miss, but what's inside is magic. It's tucked away back in the center of the Quartermaster Station and only seats about 15 ppl. I had noticed this place before when dropping off paperwork at the police station and there was a line out the door. We arrived just as they opened on a Saturday, so there was one person working at the time. When you go in you will find a paper menu on the counter, just order and they will bring it to the table when it's ready. He didn't ring us out until we were done but I have a feeling it is probably order, pay, wait when they're busy. Drinks are by the 20oz plastic bottle, they offered a cup with ice but it wasn't needed. They also have sweet and unsweetened tea but since they'd just opened it was made yet. The guy working (I believe it was the owner) said most popular were the boneless tips and the brisket so we got one of each. My friend stuck with the fries and added a mac&cheese, I switched my fries for green beans and added a mac&cheese as well. It took a bit to get it out to us but as noted there was only 1 person there at the time, another employee came during our meal, but overall the wait wasn't long at all. Wow! Thier mac&cheese is the real deal, I can totally see myself going back just for that. My green beans were well seasoned and perfectly cooked through while still firm. I tried some of my friends fries and found them well seasoned and they tasted baked vs deep fried. As for the meat, my friend said the tips were a bit on the dry side but the sauce on the table took care of that. My brisket was very tender and while I sampled the sauce (it was fine) I decided I didn't need any and was very pleased with my sandwich. We cleared our own table and paid. For 2 meals, 2 additional sides and 2 bottles of water was just under $22. I will certainly be back, the food was tasty and the worker we encountered was very friendly. read more

We found them by playing you guessed it Pokemon go lol They are located in the Quartermaster Station, right next to Jeff City Hall. There are 2 pogo gyms right out front and noticed them and smelled the wonderful smells coming from the smokers out back. Its like having a picnic to go. Another hole in wall place where a must try at least once or twice. Their menu has pretty much anything BBQ ya could want, from ribs, tips, pulled pork sandwich with the sides. We have got take out 2 times to take home to eat. They move on their pace, it isn't place to go if you are in a hurry, but a relaxed atmosphere, where ya get friendly chit chat from employees or regulars. I got the Ribs and Chicken breast , coleslaw , baked beans and mac&cheese ... all I have to say AMAZING! Such a great food, fresh and yummy. On top of it .... the owners are such a nice people. I had the pulled chicken sandwich & it was really good. The bread was nice & soft & I really didn't need to add sauce. The mac n cheese was a little too cheesy for me but still good. OK. So it's a family owned and operated place. Very small. VERY SMALL. Also very cheap - looking. The place doesn't have a bathroom out in the open at least. And theirs no soda fountains... when I went they had bottles of soda in a broken fridge - that wasn't working. All the bottles were warm and we were given a foam cup with ice. There were four sets of tables to choose from. There is no air conditioning. They have a bunch of napkins and a warm bottle of hunt's ketchup on the table - plus two bottles of other sauces to choose from. A lot of mustard packages. They have a wall dedicated to African American history related to Jeffersonville. They have a nice big TV in there. They were playing the news. I got a pulled pork sandwich with fries. I didn't like the sauce they on it. It was a bit sour tasting. The fries were alright. They kept some of the food in containers in another fridge next to the broken fridge out front which was peculiar. The people who ran the place were nice but very shy. Place was a bit hard to find. It's in an odd spot. Literally right next to a courthouse. Not to say it's a terrible place but I definitely wouldn't come again. Not appealing. Staff was great, and the atmosphere was unique (it's a round building with a grill outside, in front of town hall, in the middle of an old shipping warehouse district?). I met an old friend at the Depot - Big Ben's D&M Family Bar-B-Que and it was Good. My friend and I hadn't been there yet and hadn't even heard of it. It was actually larger inside than I thought it would be, but still quaint. The atmosphere is nice with cool dining music, not too loud. We met Deon, the Master Chef who was very cordial and informative concerning the menu. My friend and I ordered the Junkie Snack meal which consisted of a pulled pork, cole slaw, baked bean sandwich for $6. We also had seasoned fries ($2 each) on the side which were very good also. We had a sample of squash casserole and found that delicious too. My friend had iced tea which he said was fine. We finished off our meal with a tiny little cup (little scoop) of homemade strawberry ice cream for $3 each which was very tasty, but a little pricey for me. I will probably be back to sample some other fare they have, like beef brisket, fish, shrimp (on certain days) and other smoked items. They have several other sides to choose from also and various teas, lemonades and other beverages. It was nice and cool on a very hot day and I noticed a good lunch crowd while we spent about an hour in the restaurant. It looked like they could handle about 25-30 diners comfortably which amazed me. looking at the place from the outside. I look forward to another visit and wonder how I went 5 years not knowing this little gem was there in the quadrangle. Lastly, I am NOT saying this is the BEST BBQ in Kentuckiana. I stumbled across this place when my wife and I were out and about and she needed to look at some scrubs at a nearby store back in the fall. I stayed in the truck since we didn't want to get our son out. With the windows down on that perfect fall day, I smelled the smell of the heavens. You know, the roll of smoke from a smoke pit. It peaked my interest to find out where in the heck it was coming from, so off I drove to find it. Luckily it was nearby so I didn't leave my wife all alone for too long. Located in the heart of the quadrangle in Jeffersonville, this BBQ joint is a unique place. I ordered the pulled pork and had Mac and cheese and baked beans. The food was terrific, borderline 5 star on its own. The slow line and small portion on my sandwich is what knocked it to 4 stars. I'm not sure that this is a consistent thing as my friend ordered a pulled chicken sandwich and hers was normal size. Mine was slightly bigger than a slider from the WC lounge.
