I have been here several times and it seems to always be the same. Decent to good food. Slower to slow service. Where to begin, as we entered the restaurant I noticed 3 tables that had not been cleaned up. This is not a problem if the place was busy. But there was a total of 3 people in the place besides ourselves. The young boy, maybe 13 y/o, was too busy on the Ipad to bother to clean or say hello to us. We ordered our Pho and got it within 7 mins which is standard for this place. When it's busy we have received half orders and all at different times (which is terrible). As we were eating our Pho, which is always good. I noticed how the young man was very inexperienced in dealing with customers and how to multitask at the restaurant. His skills in dealing with customers was just as bad. He was however very good on the phone with his friend who asked him if he wanted to go to see the tank movie "Fury". I know this because he was very loud. I understand that this is a family restaurant but someone needs to teach the kid how to clear tables in a timely manner, how to greet customers, and how to speak on the phone before they let him interact with customers. Will I go back? Probably, but only when it is slow because I know they are unable to handle volume. This could be a very good eatery if they got their stuff together. read more

Ordered my food via Postmates and when my food was delivered I almost drove back to this restaurant to complain about how horribly ripped-off I was. First, they used the wrong noodle (pho noodles) for the beef stew and there was literally no real beef parts; the bowl was full of vegetables. This dish was ordered for my boyfriend, he's 180 lbs -- let me tell you, this guy hardly ever complains about his food yet, he was NOT happy with what he got -- and was left hungry. Secondly, I got a beef pho and tripe and there were maybe three fledgling pieces of tripe lost in a sea of broth. My food looked like it was ordered for a vegan, nothing but noodles, soup, and vegetables. I'm all 90 lbs and this wasn't enough to quench my appetite. That speaks volumes. Can't believe I paid $41 for this sh*t. Who pays for $41 worth of food and feel completely hungry and dissatisfied? That is either ironic or simply put, the restaurant just didn't give a crap about quality and service because I wasn't physically in the shop for them to care so they thought they could get away with being total sh*theads? I was craving bun bo hue and that is exactly what I got. Now this place doesnt look authentic and it is probably catered to non Vietnamese but I have to admit that the bun bo hue was delicious. The soup was quite spicy and oily though but the rest of the stuff- the noodles, soup, toppings- were on point. It is next to safeway so it can be a convenient lunch spot. read more

Pho: The soup base was a little strong with the added flavors (additives to the beef stock). I can't put my finger on it but it tasted like it had too much fish sauce and sugar. It wasn't bad but it overpowered the beef flavor. After a few spoons of soup, your palate gets used to it. Definitely not my favorite beefy stock. What I did like was their meats. They slice their raw meat a little thicker so it doesn't get overcooked when dropped in the broth. It is very tender and still maintains the nice beef flavor. The Brisket is already cooked well done but it wasn't too dry like some places. Their cuts were definitely lean and I like that. The meat was the best part of the Pho. Egg Roll: The egg rolls were very crispy. The pork filling was good. The sauce was served in a little plastic cup that was smaller than the roll so I wasn't able to dip the roll. 3/5/2015 update: they now use larger dipping cups :) Service: There really isn't much service there although they still ask for the regular tip starting at 15% when you pay with a credit card. The process works by ordering & paying at the counter and then finding your own seat. They will bring the food to your table but there isn't any other service. For example, you grab your own water. I think they need to work on their customer service though. For these little establishments, they either need to kick butt on the food or provide a friendly environment where people feel good about going. They are neither. For example, I saw the cashier walk over to a customer sitting at a table and tell him he accidentally charged him for the wrong sandwich and that the customer needed to pay another dollar and change. He apologized to the customer several times. I thought this was really tacky on the establishment's part. If they made the mistake and it is only a dollar and change then let it go. It is really tacky to go to a customer and ask for that small amount of money for their mistake. This place is conveniently located to my work so I might be back. But I would only go here if I'm tight on time. Otherwise, I much prefer going to the other Pho places a little bit further away. 7/7/2015: had the Bun Bo Hue. Very tasty but way too oily. There was easily 1/4" of oil floating on top. If I get it again, I'll see if they can add less oil (hopefully it isn't part of the broth). read more

The Pho is amazing. The beef and chicken taste great. I've also tried a few of the chicken dishes and they are great as well.

We decided to eat here last Sunday and the food was pretty good. We tried the beef pho, seafood pho, lotus root salad, shrimp toast, coffee, and lychee tea. We requested the beef on the side with the beef pho, but she said she forgot and had to remake it. Seafood pho was pretty good, no real complaints it was ok. She brought out papaya salad instead of lotus root salad, so we had to send that back as well for a redo. Shrimp toast was small but delicious. Lychee tea was half basil seeds...so honestly it wasn't a winner for me. I was thirsty and I wanted tea...not a cup of basil seeds to quench my thirst. I enjoy them on occasion, but not this time since I didn't not order lychee/basil seed tea. Overall once our order was made correctly is was good. Menu was appealing and the dining area was very clean. I am not sure if we will return or not though based on her inability to get our order correct. I absolutely hate sending food back and this was twice in once setting. Also, they ask for tip prior to getting service through the square payment system. We felt obligated to give $5 which was under their recommended % and IF the service was good then we would add more when we were done. Instead she looked at the tip amount right in front of us and I felt like we were punished based on the $5 given. I might be wrong, who knows. But the body language and irritation for our incorrect order said otherwise. So 2 stars for service and 3 stars for the food. I doubt we will return... But who knows. read more

Where do I begin... This place looks super professional with a classy logo and web presence. My friend actually found it through DoorDash, and we decided to swing by for lunch. When we arrived, the place was almost empty (which should have been an indicator of the bad experience to come). It seemed to be some sort of family operation, with different aged family members all walking around in the back. I have no issue with a family business, but the whole operation just looked super unprofessional and sketch. When we received our Chicken Bowls, we were presented with a weird broth that we ended up pouring over our entrees. Everything was incredibly bland, especially for the high price point!! I was expecting stellar food based on the menu descriptions and the prices, but the quality of the entrees was horrible. The grilled chicken was not deboned properly, and I bit into some bones and cartilage. Yuck!! We couldn't finish our meals and ended up leaving. We ordered the Vietnamese Steamed Chicken Banh Mi and the Traditional Vietnamese Sandwich from Door Dash and they were both completely inedible. The 'steamed chicken' inside both the sandwiches was grey and freaky sliced mystery meat - definitely not steamed and definitely not chicken. If Yelp had the feature, I would upload a picture of both sandwiches here so you could see for yourself. I'm not sure if it was because we ordered from Door Dash, or they ran out of ingredients, or the chef was sick that day but I won't be ordering from or going in to this restaurant anytime soon. read more

This little sandwich shop serves the best pho in Silicon Valley, outside of San Jose. That's right, there's no better bowl of pho between San Jose and San Francisco. I've tried almost all of them. If you like a peppery, sweet and savory broth, you may not find a better bowl anywhere locally. I changed it up tonight and had the Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup with thick rice noodles) - also delicious, not too heavy. The sandwiches are also very tasty - the meat is flavorful and the picked veggies are fresh and delicious. Very minor feedback, not at all food-related: please provide real, not disposable, chopsticks for the noodle soups. The disposable chopsticks are too skinny and short. Asian soup spoons would also be welcomed. Finally, a couple of times I noticed that tables were not cleared for a long while after the patron had left. Why 5 stars then? Because I want this place to stay open - it's the best Asian option near my work at the moment. Keep up the great work! read more

No amount of condiments can save your food here. Turn around and save your money. Came here for the very first time today and was highly disapointed on the price, the food portion, and the food. I love me a good seafood pho and is my usually order anywhere I go. This is possibly the most I have ever payed for a small, very, very small seafood pho EVER! All the contents fit in a to go side salad container for $13!! Thats even more expensive than a large seafood pho at any other place I've been to. Insult to injury it was a pile of imitation crab accompanied by two shrimps and a small crab claw in warm (not hot) bath water. I expect some imotation crab, but not as much as this place uses. The $13 does not come with flavor so if you like being ripped off, shorted on flavorless portions, this is the place for you! read more

I ordered a bowl of the chicken pho and a thai iced tea. A bowl of pho was $9.50 and the thai tea was $3.75, this place was highly rated so I didn't think much of the higher than average price since I was expecting higher than average quality. The broth was a bit bland, but the chicken was good quality and the basil was fresh. My pho wasn't bad and they give you a lot for a small but was it no better than some of the $7 pho I can get in San Jose. The real reason for the 2 stars was the fact that waitress didn't know how to make thai iced tea and got a little rude with me when I tried to tactfully point that out. She made it with the concentrated tea mixture and plain milk, so it was very bitter and not sweet at all. I'm used to places making it with condensed milk for sweetness so I politely asked the cashier if she could add more of the "sweetner" and she rudely stated "You mean milk??" and I said yes, but the sweet milk. She took it without a word and brought it back tasting exactly the same. I probably should have said something or asked for my money back considering I basically threw away $4 on a drink that I felt wasn't made properly, but I didn't want to deal with the rude cashier. Just dropped by this shop as it is close to where I live. We had the Saigon Style Seasoned Pork Sandwich and the Grilled Beef sandwich. Both we very tasty (I had the pork and it was filled with juicy slabs of marinated pork hot off the grill with a tangy, but not overpowering bbq sauce and I think mayo). The bread was decent, not stale... but not fresh out of the oven either. Not quite as good as say Lee's Sandwiches which bakes it's own bread. This is not quite the same as the various sandwich places dotting Little Saigon in San Jose. The sandwiches are bigger, made with better cuts of meat (by American standards in that you can easily identify the meat you are eating, although some of us like tripe and other offal) that are freshly cooked when you order it. Consequently the sandwiches are noticeably more expensive, but not a bad deal either. We also had the Vienamese Ice Coffee, which was pre-mixed (normally it comes with a big layer of sweet condensed milk and they give you the coffee separate to pour in) but tasted decent as well as a Fresh Soy Drink, which was not quite soy milk... but was refreshing nevertheless. It is clear by the biodegradable cutlery, cups, and compostable plates that the owner (a nice woman I met running the counter) is looking target a little bit more mainstream clientele... and by the looks of the traffic she got the first day (today was opening day). It looks like she made the right choice. The convenient location and decent food will probably make this place a regular quick bite place... but is not in my list of "highly recommended" places that people need to actually drive to go try out. read more

I love this place because everyone is always friendly, the food is well prepared and they have vegetarian pho. Most Vietnamese restaurants have little or nothing to offer vegetarians, so it's really nice to be able to get veggie pho and banh mi. Their veggie egg rolls are also yummy. I expected super amazeballs food but that's not what I got. We ordered bun bo hue, a pork vermicelli bowl, a papaya salad, a tofu spring roll, and a traditional spring roll. The papaya salad was super funky with a strange aftertaste and we only ate 3% of it. The spring rolls were good in an average way, as was the bun bo hue. The pork was very good (tender and flavorful), but the noodles were hot and soggy - which is not how vermicelli bowls are supposed to be. Then we asked for water (as in two cups of water) and he charged us for bottles (which we unknowingly paid for) without asking. Very strange. Big Bites serves incredibly fresh and tasty Vietnamese in a bright, clean, and modern environment. The prices are good for the generous portions, and the staff are incredibly friendly and want to make sure you have the best experience. While I've had several dishes there including bahn mi, curry, bun and pho, one dish in particular stands head and shoulders above the rest: bun pho hue. I've never had this before, so I cannot compare it directly to other pho shops (although certainly will at the next opportunity). That said, their bun pho hue makes pho look like a can of Campbell's soup. While pho has a hearty thin broth, this soup had a thicker broth filled with herbs and spices that combined to give it a nice kick without being overpoweringly spicy. The mark of a great spicy dish in my mind is one where the flavor of the chiles shines through, and this most certainly did. The noodles were also perfectly al dente and the various proteins flavorful and diverse. I have no idea how I've gone so long without ever having this dish anywhere, but I will never be able to order pho at Big Bites again knowing that their bun pho hue is this good. read more

Delicious!!!! Not your typical Pho, Vietnamese sandwich place. Very flavorful, fresh. No MSG Cool! Spicy Bun Bo Hue noodle was tasty, never has this wonderful tasty flavor before. Unique yumminess. Beef pho noodles was perfect with it's fresh ingredients. My grilled beef rice plate was freshly grilled in the back. Tender, no fat, and flavorful. I saw them grilling it in the back. Most pho place, they cook the meat before hand, and it's unusually dry with fatty parts on it. We also got Saigon Style Seasoned Pork loin sandwich. Fresh crisps bread, with moist pork loin. Just tried Big Bites tonight, and was disappointed. It's pretty expensive for vietnamese food without having authentic vietnamese flavors. The hoagies (sandwiches) are ~$7.00 which is 2x more expensive than Lee's (~$3.50). The lemongrass chicken rice bowl was very underwhelming for $10, since the chicken did not have that much of a lemongrass flavor to it. The bowl was filled with cabbage, cucumbers, and peanuts. I rather go to Asian Box for rice bowls. Although the portion is bigger here, the flavors at Asian Box is much better (plus you can get a caramelized egg for that price). Overall, it's not bad. ok, I did come back. They seem to have hired more employees (thanks for being friendly!), and the place seems a lot more busy. I am currently 8 months pregnant and am constantly craving their tofu sandwich. It is SO good! I ask for less jalapeños than what they usually put in it and it is just perfect. I went in there not long ago during a cold and windy day to order some pho, the vegetarian is just the way I like it; it totally hit the spot! I have been happier with the customer service. Just one visit so far at this 3-week-old Vietnamese restaurant doesn't entitle me to much opinion, obviously; but here are first impressions from one meal, with a group of food-knowledgeable friends who regularly eat out together. We got a sample of Big Bites's menu range and general style, which I'd call a more mainstream, less traditional ("ethnic") variation on the beloved South-Bay Vietnamese-sandwich shop, with moderate diverse menu (rolls, phos, salads, "bun" rice-noodle bowls), helpful current staff, impressive kitchen execution and flavors; fairly generous portion sizes. Will certainly return for more experience. We also (for dessert, you might say! :-) picked up more of the story behind the single, unusual, one-star Yelp review so far (which throws a different light on the comments in that review, as usual) -- more below. I sampled the (fresh, $5.50 per order) spring rolls and two daily specials: a lemon-grass grilled-chicken rice bowl, and a curry bowl (again with chicken). All very competent and tasty. Curry bowls were generous and soupy, sizeable meat and vegetable pieces, rice on the side. Raw "spring rolls" (some restaurants call them summer rolls) were fresh and lively. Other friends ordered sandwiches, and were pleased. The sandwiches are priced higher than at some hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurants, but Big Bites' atmosphere is more genteel, and the prices were NOT out of line at all from other sandwich genres locally (anyone who complains here about sandwich prices has wrongly ignored both factors). Most impressive was friendly service and diligent, conscientious manager. At one point, someone in our table tried to break up grilled meat using chopsticks; without prompting, the manager appeared offering a table knife. How often do you see such alertness, even in much fancier restaurants? Samples of house pho broth were offered, which caused our sole food criticism. It was overpoweringly salty; I hope that was just a random batch defect, not the regular style. The soul of a proper pho (and Vietnamese immigrants have been telling me for 20 years that it's almost never found in local restaurants) is an honest, slow-cooked broth from beef and beef bones. I picked up hints of that in this broth sample, maybe a little of the bone-broth mouthfeel; the customary spices were rather light; but all that was submerged under excess salt. At this writing, there's just one 1-star review (from "BRYAN Y." who, if you check, loves to post 1-star reviews) and from what we heard the manager say, it's a good example of the I-won't-be-back complaint where the CUSTOMER was plainly at fault -- the kind that distort many Yelp star averages. Manager said "BRYAN Y." ordered a take-out sandwich to be ready in "five minutes," so he could stop at Safeway nearby; that the customer returned not five, but 15, minutes later by the clock; and that, after driving to his ultimate destination the customer, as he complained here, found the sandwich had cooled down. With such delays, it would be reasonable to expect a cold sandwich, and quite unreasonable to blame the restaurant. read more

Been to many vietnamese restaurants in the bay area and I must say this one is probably my favourite. Don't let the price fool you, the $8 banh mi is definitely worth every penny. We ordered combination pork + chicken banh mi, pork spring rolls, and their famous bun ho hue. I was surprised that every single one of these dishes is delicious, and to top it off, every one of their dish is made to order (YES, even the banh mi!). -The banh mi was piping hot when we got it, and the meat was extremely tender and flavorful. -The bun ho Hue had a savory broth, and the combination of meat was quite decent as well. The cafe that was here before didnt seem to be doing so well so it's good to see something more promising step in. Interior has been upgraded from a furniture standpoint and it looks a lot cleaner. Decided I need a quick convenient meal and dropped by late on the weekend. Got a bowl of beef ph and an iced coffee. Broth had good flavor, beef and noddles too. However the portion was really small for $9. I could have eaten two and would still be hungry. After I got home I had to get a snack. My only qualm however is the pre made Vietnamese iced coffee had an off flavor. In fact I didnt even finish it and Im someone who got the starving kids in Africa lecture beaten into me at a young age where I tend to not waste even things I dont like. Might give the other fare a try but I think they may have to boost their portions up a bit even if they have to charge slightly more. read more

I LOVE Vietnamese sandwiches - seriously. So, I was very excited to see this place come in, but I haven't been back in since. Inside is cafe like, clean and well organized. There is seating both in and outdoor, which would be nice in good weather. While I don't remember any decorations, it was still nice overall. The cashier girl was nice and I ordered my sandwich pretty easily. BUT the wait took FOREVER!!! You kind of assume things will be quick as places like this, but really I was there for at least 20 minutes waiting for a sandwich. Now to the sandwich - it was okay. The bread was fresh, the veggies fresh, the chicken okay, but I guess there was just something lacking. I did like the free additionally salad (nice touch). I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but I wouldn't avoid it either. It was very new when I tried it and It probably deserves as least a second chance. Give it it try! I came with a couple of co-workers around 1pm in a Thursday. When we got there, the tables were not cleaned and they were obviously short staffed. It took about 5 minutes before they took the order if the person in front of us. Then, it was our turn. They were "running low" on a lot of the things we tried to order, like the fresh soy mocha and the rice noodles. We tried to order some egg rolls, but they didn't have the options that were listed on the wall. But, they had the combination egg roll, which also wasn't listed. We finally finished ordering and sat down. But, we couldn't sit at the bigger table, though, because it hadn't been cleaned or bussed. You get your own water at the side table where the condiments are, but there wasn't much, so we got what we could. We asked for water, but they didn't refill it until we left. They were also out of sugar. Instead of saying they were out of something, they kept saying "we're running low" and then didn't specify if I could get it. Oh, and their prices are crazy! I got the regular pho for $9 (normally $6-$7 everywhere else). The Vietnamese sandwiches are $7 (normally $3.50 elsewhere). They have sample plates in their display, but their $10 salads don't look like they're worth that much. It's mostly has bread covering the sides of the plate. I had their pho, and it wasn't amazing. Their egg rolls were just ok. The coffee I got was lukewarm. I don't think we'll be going back there any time soon. I'd rather get sandwiches at Safeway. read more

Love this place! We live right down the street and this place opened up a month or so after we moved to Mountain View. For me, it's all about the Saigon Pork sandwich, but husband and children love the Pho. The lady that owns the place is super friendly, but the staff has changed quite frequently and on average is mediocre at best. I will agree with the person that mentioned there doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency, but this has never seemed to affect me since I am never personally in a hurry. Also, my food is always awesome and up to my standards, so them not exactly being in a hurry doesn't really bother me. The food is straight up good. The ingredients are fresh, some are organic. The sauces in the sandwiches and sweet potato fries are quality and flavorful. They use biodegradable containers. Yeah, they charge more than some of the other Vietnamese restaurateurs do, but these guys are also trying harder, making better food, and attempting to be more responsible. It pays off. The proof is in the taste. I got the pork banh mi, sweet potato fries, spring rolls, ginger beer. Everything was really great. I'm going back soon to try soups and other sandwiches. I got great customer service while I was there for dinner. I didn't finish my meal and asked for a to go box, and the guy offered to package my leftovers for me. read more

Pretty happy they deliver to my work through Grub Hub. I ordered the bun ga nuong (chicken bowl with noodles) and it looked really nice. Noodles were cooked perfectly. A lot of these Americanized Vietnamese places make the noodles too hard. I thought it would be awesome. Poured all the fish sauce in, mixed up my bowl, took the first bite..and it was SUPER bland. Like blander than bland. They're almost there with their food. I know they're trying to cater to American taste buds but you're in California. Californians have more developed taste buds. Would I order from them again? Yes. But I would ask them to make the fish sauce and meat a bit more salty/savory. I take that back. My boss just came out of his office and said his lemon grass chicken curry was too bland and not to order from them again. =( read more

Here's my review criteria in a nutshell for restaurants: would I go there again? For Big Bites it is definitely YES. I had lunch there today for the second time within 10 days, I tried the spring rolls and beef sandwich. Both were every bit as good as the pork sandwich I had last weekend. I'll keep going back because I'm in the area of bailey park shopping center often. of the 4 or 5 restaurants there, this has quickly become my favorite. Fresh ingredients, healthy choices, no one flavor on the plate so overwhelming that you can't savor the rest of the meal. My only complaint is that I don't like cilantro on anything--that's just me. Big Bites uses it in salads and as a garnish. Garnish I can push aside, but you can't really ask them to take it out the salad. This place is the epitome of just OK. The service is OK, the food is OK, the prices are OK but nothing is good or great. I usually only go here when I want a noodle bowl and don't feel like going all the way down to Castro to get Asian Box (which has way more flavor and costs way less money). I ordered take-out one night and they told me it would take 15 minutes. I showed up 20 minutes later and still had to wait 10 minutes for them to finish making it. Doesn't that sort of contradict the whole point of ordering take-out in the first place? I liked their shrimp, it was fresh and crispy and the people who work there are generally pretty nice when you are in the restaurant so they get a few points for those things. And I know the Bay Area is expensive, I totally get it, but this place is expensive even for this area but doesn't really follow-thru on food quality to make up for the discrepancy in price. If their food gets way better or their prices get way lower then I will be back but I will likely avoid this place in the meantime. read more
