Smokey C's Bar-B-Que & Wings is a lunch only, Monday through Friday business that provides a decent meal and is obviously quite popular. I got there just before noon and I guess that I timed it perfectly because minutes after I sat down with my meal, there was a line out the door. I opted to go with the chicken breast and for my tow sides. I went with the Mac and cheese and baked beans. I also got a side of deviled eggs. The staff was friendly and they kind of have a cafeteria style serving going where they have the sides at the counter and bring the meat out from the kitchen. The place does not have much in the way of ambiance, but I have always felt that there is not much about barbecue that is pretentious or highbrow. This is a simple place, but the food was pretty stellar. I would definitely recommend here.

I took a special trip out to try Smokey C's. I'm always hunting for the best bbq and I was feeling like a nice drive, so I hopped in my car and drove out to Decatur to give this place a go. Out on the highway away from the main body of the city, I found Smokey C's to be VERY busy at lunchtime. Looks like they're only open for lunch, so I guess you gotta get it while you can! It's well air-conditioned inside (a must in this heat) and has a decent amount of unobtrusive seating. Lots of factory and construction type workers eating in. There are a couple picnic tables out front too. A line was backed up and around the inside of the dining area from the ordering counter in the back. The good: despite being very busy, the service was GREAT and very fast. Lots of the sides and some of the meats are served pulling from a hot bar. They had 2 employees on the bar and a third at the cash register, with a couple more being sent back and forth for more involved bbq items like ribs. Despite the line being very long, it moved remarkably quickly. Each staff member greeted me warmly and took special care to ensure my order was right. The menu is large and has plenty of options. Pretty much every type of bbq meat you can think of is here: wings, turkey, chicken, pork, etc. They have some interesting items like a bbq burrito. Numerous sides are available here; some of them are fairly uncommon at bbq shops, like mashed potatoes and gravy. Prices are also pretty fair. They have some great lunch specials and you can even get a small portion of ribs for an affordable price. Unfortunately, the food didn't wow. I had a better time than my husband, who was sorely disappointed (he gave a 2/5 to his meal), but nothing really impressed me either. I ordered the lunch special (4 oz pulled pork, two sides - Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy for me) and husband had the small rib plate with macaroni and cheese and baked beans. When they say small rib plate, they mean small in terms of quantity. The ribs themselves were fairly large, but only two bones came in an order. That was okay by us per the price and our desire to have a smaller sized lunch, but something to keep in mind if you're hungry. The best item was the red bbq sauce. It was sweet and thick sauce, which is my preference. It had a very, VERY subtle heat (really only noticed it at the end of the meal, lingering on my tastebuds). The pulled pork was also alright. Didn't have a ton of smoke flavor, but a little at least, and it was neither dry nor too fatty. Mashed potatoes and gravy weren't anything too special, but they were still mashed potatoes and gravy -- can't be too mad about those. Neither of us were fond of the macaroni and cheese. It wasn't terrible, but also just not super good. Neither of us finished our servings. Too fake cheese-tasting for me, very Kraft-esque. Husband said he was absolutely certain the baked beans were Bush's baked beans doctored up with a little extra bbq meat. I trust him on this -- he went through a major Bush's eating phase for a while, lol. That's not awful, either, but you'd hope for more while out at a restaurant. What was pretty bad was the ribs. Husband didn't even finish them, which is unusual for him; he's good about eating food we paid for. I didn't try them after they met with his disapproval (if he doesn't like something, I certainly won't, lol). He described them as tasting smoky, but in a very, very bad way. Not sure what went wrong there, but not good. Service really wowed here -- genuine kudos on that front. However, if I were to return, I'd probably try other items than what I ordered in this visit.

The bone that was missing half the meat and the fatty, slimy meat that was on the other 3 bones!

Best banana pudding, pork, white sauce, and friendly customer service. I hope I can make it early enough to try the chicken one day!

Best smoked wings I've ever had. Get there early for lunch, close to 11am as possible or they run out.

Those who know BBQ often say, "For best BBQ in Alabama, go to Big Bob's." It's not just the best,…read morebut also the inventor's of Alabama Style BBQ, which is particularly notable for the white sauce that's served here and was invented by Big Bob. Big Bob founded the spot back in 1925 and only recently passed away, giving the business to his children. The place is an institution of the state and is packed on weekends. Prices are from an era that's now long gone, making this not only incredible BBQ, but also a steal for the money. I mean, who sells a BBQ pork sandwich for under $5 in 2026? Many staff working here clearly have been around for a long, long time. So, one might ask, what should I get at Big Bob's? For starters, the chicken wings. Likely the best smoked wings to be had anywhere: just the right amount of smokey profile while being tender and juicy. True perfection in something that's hard to master. Next, one of the samplers is not a bad idea. Pulled pork is truly state of the art, winning many competitions around the South. Ribs are fall off the bone and delicious. Brisket is good, but a low fat version that might or might not be to someone's taste. Hand cut French fries and baked beans as a side, and finally, life is all set. Sure, if one gets more adventure, the ice box cakes are wonderful also, with the coconut varietal being a standout. Stop by, enjoy and leave with bragging rights for having tried something truly one of a kind.

I work in Decatur somewhat seasonally and so whenever I'm up here I enjoy opportunities to try…read moretheir local restaurants. On my most recent visit about three weeks ago, Marlin's wound up being my choice for a quick lunch. This is a rather oddball restaurant. Located in a standalone building on the edge of a large parking lot, the vibe inside I'd say is closest to an American-Mexican restaurant (a la Rosie's, Buena Vista, etc - think vibrant murals, comfy booth seating, large, open spaces). It was a little dimly lit but clean. A friendly hostess got me a seat quickly. The menu continues the oddball vibe. There's literally something for everyone here, with American-Mexican favorites like fajitas and arroz con pollo, along with standard American fare like chicken tenders and pasta dishes, as well as slightly more upscale items like fish and steak. I saw on their website they claim, "We're not just one thing - and that's the point." Well, they've certainly nailed that mantra. My waiter was a pleasant fellow who worked diligently to ensure my meal and check arrived in a timely way. He got me a refill without me having to ask but didn't hover or make me feel like I was unwelcome or a chore. My meal came out quickly and I was in and out in ~30 minutes, which is a pretty good turn-around for a sitdown restaurant. Every table seems to get a complimentary basket of hush puppies as a welcome/starter item. Again, I'd say the vibe overall is closer on the Mexican side of restaurants, so one might expect chips and salsa...but despite this seeming oddity, I'll admit I enjoyed them. They were golden brown, slightly sweet and slightly savory, and came with a tasty dipping sauce. I ate several. They have a lunch menu with reasonable pricing following a typical pattern of entree + one side (dinner portions come with two sides). I was feeling unadventurous and wound up getting chicken tenders and fries, as I thought the tenders looked pretty good in a picture I'd seen on Yelp. I asked for some ranch to dip in. My food was fresh at least in terms of temperature - almost scaldingly so. I got a strong frozen-fried vibe from both fries and tenders, though. Less a crime with the fries, and these were salted nicely and not too greasy. The chicken was rather dry and stringy and the breading didn't really "crunch." They were ultimately unobjectionable, but reminiscent of maybe a McDonalds crispy chicken strip, which seems a little underwhelming from a full restaurant. The ranch was also not very good - not buttermilk, so not super creamy, kind of bottled salad dressing vibes. Ketchup or the residual sauce from the hush puppies was a better choice. Overall, not super wowed but not super let down either. Service was solid and the environment was comfortable. Since the menu is so large, I'd imagine there's something for everyone - and maybe a sleeper hit dish on there, too.
