I've lived in Memphis for over 20 years and can get good bbq at a number of places, but was in Decatur for my daughter's soccer tournament and thought I'd give Big Bob Gibson's a try. I was very curious about their famous white sauce. All of the sauces are on the table, so you don't have to commit to any certain kind when you order. Their traditional sauce was my favorite, although the white sauce was very good. The chicken was very juicy and the pork had a delicious smoke flavor. I would definitely go back for the food, but what separates Big Bob's for me was the service. The staff behind the counter was friendly and made great recommendations. They greeted our group with big smiles. Side story...My daughter left behind a very expensive pair of sunglasses. We didn't realize it until 3-4 hours later. We went back to the restaurant and someone had found them, but they couldn't figure out where they had placed them. This was on a Saturday evening & the restaurant is closed on Sundays. I left my name and phone number for the manager to get in touch with me, fully expecting to have to call them back myself. By 9:00 am Monday the manager had found the glasses, contacted me, and (since I was already back in Memphis) offered to mail them. They arrived Tuesday (the very next day) bubble wrapped and boxed. Often times we're just lucky to get great food, but when restaurants are willing to take care of their customers the way Big Bob's did me and my family, it deserves to be heard. Anytime in the future I'm near Decatur, AL, I will make it a point to go back to Big Bob Gibson's bbq. read more

This is a solid BBQ joint! I had the beef brisket, greens and potato salad. The portions were generous, the brisket had enough fat to not be a typical dry as leather southern brisket (I love TX style brisket, so fatty it melts in your mouth), the greens were seasoned just right and hot. Unfortunately I should not have ordered the potato salad, I remembered I don't like it in general but too late. Probably the Best BBQ joint in Bama, That is Alabama. As you walk in its like a home style restaurant. Your greeted with big smiles and great southern hospitality. Definitely a must stop in if your in the area Decatur Alabama. A must try is the loaded baked potato with brisket, Mac and cheese,beans. Also the ribs are lip smacking good. read more

I LOVE Big Bob's potatoes. As someone who has lived in North Alabama my entire life, I've also grown up eating at Big Bob's regularly. I ate at this location growing up but after I got married I lived closest to the 6th Ave location and we are there as much as possible. Now we've moved and I live closest to this one. So we decided to try it out its been a long time since I've been to this one and I've never been inside. I don't think I've ever been quite so disappointed. The food wasn't that good, the service was alright but not as friendly or welcoming as the 6th Avenue location where they have a wait staff as opposed to a fast food type counter. They also don't keep the same hours and when my husband is rarely off on any day other than Sunday it makes life difficult so they lose a star for that. I also didn't like that we had nothing to carry our left overs out in. Overall my experience was mediocre and I don't really want to go back. read more

Went there because we were on that side of Decatur. Big mistake and waste of time. Was Sat at 7PM w/ only one car in the drive thru and one table of customers inside. We waited at the drive thru for 8 min and the attendant saying "hold on...just a second". We back up, pull up again, same response. I drive around get out and go inside and see the drive thru attendant and another employee huddled together looking at something on one of their phones, and another employee eating a plate of food in the prep area behind the counter. Informed the mgr of my disappointment and my $ would be spent elsewhere. Food might be good, but w/ that level of service I'll never be back, they don't respect the customer. Note to the owners; review your cell phone policy, because whatever it is its affecting your sales. read more

Yup! This is an awesome place to visit-and eat. We always take back to Green Bay, their white and reg bbq sauce-wish we had a descent bbq place in Green Bay. But this is second best-come home to Alabama and bring it back! Ha!!! read more

I've had frozen BBQ that was better! It's the McDonalds of BBQ. Even had a drive through window and the slaw looked like a green snow cone scooped by a scooper. The guy who recommended this place got me good! I thought that maybe I chose the wrong place, but when I went to the other location, I found it was the same thing! Next time I'll skip BBQ when not in Texas, Memphis, St Louis or any other respectable place. I felt like I was served ALPO dog food! read more

My wife and I just moved to north Alabama, So we wanted to try some barbecue. The first night we had the beef brisket my wife absolutely adored it. I usually don't like beef brisket but this is pretty darn good. After that experience we went ahead and tried other menu items-The ribs are great, the pole pork sandwich was very good, and the whole chicken was fall off the bone good! This place was featured on Food Network for it's Smoked Turkey. So, I decided to try the brisket and Turkey. The brisket was lean and tender and flavorful. Not much of a smoke ring or bark. The turkey was a little dry, but packed with flavor. Not a fan of the white sauce as it had too much acidity which took away from the flavor of the meat. The regular BBQ sauce was excellent and packed with flavor. The potato salad was good. The cole slaw was interesting, but I prefer the regular slaw and crunchiness that brings to a BBQ dinner. Overall, not the best BBQ I have ever eaten, but I have had a lot worse. read more

The best smoked turkey in the World! I consider myself quite the bbq aficionado. I have had bbq from Chicago to KC, Texas, Atlanta and the Carolina's. My brother even competes in bbq competitions and we have had our own competitions within our family. Big Bobs has been on my bucket list for years and I was excited to finally try this place. Whenever I go to a place like this, I want to try everything. I'm also a believer that no one does everything perfect but everyone has their specialties. So I ordered brisket, ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken and turkey. The ribs were good as was the brisket. Not the best I have ever had, but they were good. The smoked chicken in their famous white bbq sauce was outstanding. Lightly smokey and moist. The smoked turkey was unbelievable. Easily one of the best meats I have ever had. I have tried smoked turkey at other bbq locations and tried to make it myself. No one does it like Big Bobs! You could argue my rating could be 4 stars but due to how amazing their chicken and turkey is, its a 5 star in my book. If I ever end up within a few hours of this place, I would drive their to get their turkey and chicken. The best smoked turkey in the world! read more

My girlfriend is originally from Decatur, AL. So on our trip there we planned to hit some spots she remembered from her childhood. Big Bob Gibson BBQ was one. We got take out and went back to our hotel with the smell making us so hungry. Unfortunately the first thing we tasted was the cole slaw. I am from New Orleans and down here our cole slaw has a creamy sauce, so taking a bite of one with what tasted like pure vinegar sauce was shocking to say the least. The cabbage was also very finally shredded, I would say too fine. Her baked stuffed baked potato was okay. The BBQ meats were also okay, needed more sauce. Even the green beans were meh at best. We were both very disappointed and for the rest of our trip this became our default bad restaurant experience. In their defense I have to admit that on our way to Decatur we did stop at Dreamland BBQ in Tuscaloosa. Whether or not that made Big Bob Gibson pale in comparison I can't say for sure. read more

The food has good flavor just don't give you enough unless you eat in. Drive thru is always slow moving. The best homemade pies anywhere. Staff is not always friendly or professional. It's like they are doing you a flavor by serving you. Manager need a public relations course as well. read more

Big Bob's is always delicious. I only have it less than five stars for two reasons-- one, they have been out of lots of things two and three hours before closing. And two, the drive thru hostesses are not friendly in anyway. BUT the food is always wonderful, and the rest of the staff is as well. read more

My favorites are chicken potatoes (huge), new chicken nachos, ribs and peanut butter pie to die for! If you aren't from the south be sure and get the sweet tea, the true southern comfort! The staff is wonderful, from the girls taking your orders to the guys preparing the food. Can't beat the clean homey atmosphere. Great for to go orders for family get togethers or tailgating, very helpful in determining how much food you will need. read more

I tried their ribs and can not figure out how they won a contest. I assume restaurant BBQ is different than competition BBQ.

I have eaten at the 6th Ave restaurant twice and will return because I absolutely love the wait staff. Knowledgeable of the menu and able too listen and make you feel at home is to me a learned talent they all have in common. I was not happy that they had run out of pork BBQ at 7pm on a Monday night and dined to the sound of the drive Thru customers all venting their dismay at the restaurant running out of pork BBQ so I felt not alone, but the communication system between drive through customers and service staff should not be audible to customers trying to eat in. Ear pieces or head phones work better. The chicken and beef brisket were both dry but still tasty when drenched in Bob's awesome sauces. My first time here was better and equaled the hype of this great eating establishment but I wished the quality of BBQ was the same at 7pm on a weekday as it is mid day on a weekend visit. Good news is the pie is always in the frig and is awesome. Never knew merengue pie could be piled so high!!! read more
