    Premium smoked Mac and cheese.
    Diane K.

For the price you pay, brisket was dry and $4 for less than 4oz of smoked Mac and cheese. I don't normally get Mac and cheese but the menu made it sound enticing but I definitely could've made better myself. It was all okay food but with all the bbq places, this had no wow factor and definitely not a favorite in the Huntsville area. I just feel like they could've done better for such a popular area. Maybe the other meats are better‍

Combined plate combo with brisket and Cajun sausage

My total bill was $27.70 with a $2 tip to the service. It's a Sunday Afternoon, so I do get the monotone look for it! Hang in there girlie! I'm not entirely sure if the taste and texture of Cajun Sausage is supposed to taste like Slim Jim's. It isn't spicy enough to be considered a Cajun sausage and extremely dry for it to be a smoked sausage. The brisket is okay, it can definitely use some work in terms of the taste and texture as it came out slightly dry and very bland where you can only taste the fattiness of the brisket fat. I didn't expect just two plain white slices of bread (not toast as it says in the menu). Potato Salad is okay, it's not bad, just wish it had more flavor off the bat instead of having us pour small pepper packets onto it to get a good flavor. Ambience of the restaurant was good, wish it was more clean at the front.

A somewhat shaky 4 star, but a 4 star nonetheless, as I would return here again of my own volition (3 stars I would go again, but only if a friend asked / it was their pick). Been wanting to try Bark and Barrel ever since they opened up as Clyde's out in Madison. That's too much of a drive for me 9 times out of 10, so it's been on the back burner until now. They've opened up a location at Stovehouse, which is much more doable. I figured I'd get some to carry home for lunch today. Like all vendors at Stovehouse, the "restaurant" is really mostly just a counter where you can order. Some vendors have a couple of barstools and counters to eat at inside; Bark and Barrel does not. Don't worry, there's plenty of seating outdoors, or to the left of the restaurant as you exit is an indoor space to eat if it's too hot, cold, or rainy. The interior ordering space was clean and the menu is on a TV to your left as you walk in. The service was really lovely. The man taking my order was friendly and polite, the woman who brought it out to me was SUPER kind and apologetic about my wait time (which was not bad at ALL and not even close to warranting an apology), and an older gentleman who seemed to have some authority (manager maybe? Who knows) spoke cheerfully to me as he slipped by to take something to someone else. The service was one of the deciding factors in me giving a 4. I ordered two plates: two pulled pork plates, one with smoked macaroni and cheese (an upcharge) and kettle chips, and another with potato salad and kettle chips. Both plates came with a slice of white bread cut in halves. I also got two smoked chocolate chip cookies to try. I wanted to order ribs on one of the plates, but they do not currently have ribs at this location. I don't know how long it'll be till they remedy that, and I don't know why their menu offers them, but for now, they're a non-option. They also only had smoked chocolate chip cookies today; I didn't ask if they normally have the peanut butter, though, or if they had just run out today only. Our meals were about $25, no drinks included. A little high, but it is Stovehouse and I did get dessert. The food smelled delicious on the ride back and was still warm when I unpacked it. Unfortunately, one order was messed up. We were given baked beans instead of potato salad on one plate. Luckily boyfriend likes baked beans, so not a huge deal, but it's always preferable to get what one has ordered. Here's our breakdown: Pulled pork: quite solid! Chopped in fairly large pieces (not stringy), very tender and a decent smoke flavor. Perhaps a liiiiiitle fatty for my preference, but I'm picky there. Went well with the soft white bread. Sauce: we got the regular red sauce. It was sweet, but not particularly sweet, and a tiny tiny tiny bit spicy. We both liked it! Baked beans: not sweet at all like many baked beans. I actually kind of liked them (I typically don't); they have a very smoky, savory flavor to them. Boyfriend liked them at first but said they were ultimately too overwhelmingly smoky and it was too much to eat more than a couple of bites. Smoked macaroni and cheese: don't know that I got much of a smoke flavor, but this is still a very flavorful dish. Multiple cheese flavors, a good dash of pepper, and soft penne noodles. Very rich and tasty. Kettle chips: yummy! A little hard on the teeth due to how crunchy they are, but overall tasty and a good serving size. We both agreed that the loaded kettle chips would probably be very good. Lastly, the smoked chocolate chip cookies: we couldn't decide how we felt about them. I definitely liked them more than boyfriend. We agreed that they were a touch *too* smoky, but I find the concept very interesting and think they could be phenomenal with a slightly lighter touch. Heavy smoke flavor aside, it was a delicious cookie: perfect amount of chocolate chips, large size, slightly crispy edges with a gooey center, and a bit of salt flecked throughout. Overall, Bark and Barrel is another solid option added to Stovehouse's repertoire. I don't know that it'll be my choice every time I'm there with friends, but it will definitely be my choice again at some point.

    Brisket and pulled pork
    Rhett B.

I had seen an advertisement for Bark and Barrel but I found it by surprise. My buddy wanted Ramen and we ended up at the Stovehouse. I don't care for glorified chicken noodle soup so I went after what I love, BBQ! If you have never been to the Stovehouse, it is like an outdoor mall food court. Bark and Barrel has several BBQ options and even offers a combo plate for an upcharge. I went with the brisket and added pulled pork. Both were juicy, tender, and delicious. The brisket itself is exactly like Texas style which is rare to find in Alabama. For my sides, I chose potato salad and mac and cheese. The potato salad was a creamy mustard style. The mac and cheese was smoked and made with 3 cheeses and penne noodles. I was not clear if there were 4 or 5 sauces but I was only given 4. There is a sweet, smoky; white; white Habanero which tasted similar to the white; and the Spicy. The Spicy is in consideration for hottest BBQ sauce I have ever had. First thing I did was dip my bread in it before I ate anything else and I had to eat all my potato salad to cool my mouth off. And it was still burning afterwards. It is easily a 10 on a heat scale. So this is where the star reduction comes. You only get a 2oz container of 1 sauce with your plate. Each one after is 50 cents. One of my pet peeves is being charged for sauce and this sauce was expensive. And I only get one sauce for free (which they gave me the four I paid for and didn't give me the free one). And one of the suaces were so hot, I couldn't even eat haha! Plus there was an upcharge for the mac and cheese. The BBQ is phenomenal and a must try but if you are a sauceaholic like me, you will not be happy with being charged for extra sauce and being stingy with sauce.

    Brisket be really dry
    Kevin L.

Sadly a very meh experience. Maybe it was because they were almost out, but we got a brisket plate with extra brisket and half of it was extremely dry. The potato salad was not very good. It was basically completely mashed potatoes with a lot of mustard added in. I also got 2 cookies and none of us liked them. The smoked cookies sound good but really just come out tasting burnt and also aren't the best texture. The place is nice and service is nice. But very dissapointed they'd spear low quality brisket.

Kids grilled cheese (looks like it was run over)

Overall: Overpriced and okay BBQ, Great location, friendly staff Would I go back: Only if my friends/family REALLY wanted to go Should you go: If you get the Potato, if you are actually hungry though...bring a snack, they don't give you much food. Review: This is located directly in the Stovehouse district in the restaurant row. It is a BBQ place situated amongst many other types of food. We ordered the Brisket Sandwich, the Grilled Cheese for my son and the Pulled Pork Potato for my daughter. Unfortunately, I got the Brisket and it had some chips but it was far from making me full and I feel like I'm an average sized guy. This sandwich was close to $11. We did order some of the Pork Skins. This was the most disappointing because I feel for a true "authentic" BBQ place, that they would NOT use store bought pork rinds that you find at MAPCO. That is exactly what these were packaged with some spice just to supposedly add flair to the appetizer. I guess having true pork rinds from you know...an actual BBQ roast, I am spoiled but this is not worth your money and you should stay away from it. All you'll get is a big bag of disappointment and more money out of your wallet. The kids grilled cheese was good, but as you see from the photo, not much to look at. The only thing worth it was the potato. I actually had to eat some of the daughters food just to be full. The White BBQ sauce was a good part of that meal. So if you do go, save yourself some time looking at the menu and just get the potato. Kids Review: It was good, but I don't want to go back. There is better food around this place. Total cost of meal: Appx $43 with Sandwich Meal, Rinds, Potato, Grilled Cheese, Drinks and tip.

The smoked wings were delicious as well and paired perfectly with the white sauce. The mac wasn't the greatest but I enjoyed the potato salad. The Texas toast was a great addition and was perfect for creating a little bbq sandwich. My total came out to around $32 which I felt was a bit pricey when I had paid but after getting my plate I realized how large the portions were which totally justified the cost. At most BBQ restaurants I usually finish all my food but here I had left overs so I basically got 2 meals out of the one plate. This! Place! Needs! More! Hype!…read more Okay, back to typing normally. Kar's Char is a relatively new Texas-style bbq place inside of Lowe Mill. It occupies the full restaurant space that used to belong to The Veggie and belonged to Happy Tummy before that. It's to the left of Piper and Leaf as you face P&L from the parking lot. I only belabor this point because some folks do have a hard time navigating Lowe Mill and no one should miss out on giving this place a try because they can't find it. I saw a few posts about Kar's Char when they first opened and have had them bookmarked since then. Recently, I was in the area after work around 2 PM and looking to kill some time before a doctor's appointment. I was feeling hungry and figured why not give them a go and enjoy a little time at the Mill while I waited. I arrived and took a few minutes to look at the menu. I am, admittedly, freakishly obnoxious and snobby about barbeque and was determined to have a positive experience, so I decided not to play with fire that day and instead decided to order one of their burgers, which I'd seen a few people rave about online. I selected their hatch green chili cheeseburger and placed an order for that. It comes with one side and I decided on macaroni and cheese. They have bottled drinks available next to the register and so I grabbed a water out of the cooler to round things out. My burger was cooked fresh just for me so I had a few minutes to hang around and take in the fun, nerdy, classic Lowe Mill ambiance. This is a truly local business and they seem very dedicated to supporting and uplifting their fellow businesses in and around the Mill. The service I received was incredibly kind and welcoming -- they really do seem like lovely folks here. My burger came out piping hot and cooked perfectly, with slightly crispy, charred edges and a juicy center. It was a delicious burger, slightly spicy but nothing scary, and I especially loved the chili lime aioli -- added a nice creaminess and moisture. To my pleasant surprise, the soft, lightly toasted bun held up to all the goodness pretty well! Next time I will probably ask for no pickles -- I found their flavor a little overwhelming -- but I am also hot and cold on my feelings about pickles so your mileage may vary! I say keep them on if you're a big fan, and take them off if not. :) The macaroni and cheese was enjoyable but not as good as the burger. Next time I come I will probably try out a different side. Overall, 4.5/5, with extra high marks for the hatch green chili burger and the charming, welcoming staff/owners. I'll be back to try the actual barbeque, and certainly to have another burger!

Our server was friendly, knowledgeable about the menu & very attentive. Really enjoyed everything about this place!!
