Years ago when our kids were young, a trip to the Big Dipper Ice Cream in Montana was a cherished event. Today, we were in Billings, Montana and gladly stood in line for a scoop of delicious ice cream. A beautiful and clean store that is well staffed in downtown Billings. A few samples were tried, but it is strawberry season and a must try. My wife ordered coconut. We moved outside to sit at the sidewalk tables to people watch and enjoy our scoops. Something must of happened as NEITHER scoop had any flavor. There were no flecks of strawberries or little seeds. Both scoops were devoid of any flavor, a true disappointment. We were both in disbelief. Perhaps, we chose the two flavorless scoops in their summer lineup. I can't answer as to what happened, but we won't return on our next trip to Montana and the Big Dipper Ice Cream. It is never pleasant when your memories don't live up to expectations. read more

Not sure how Big Dipper isn't 5 stars across the board. Went after dinner tonight and even though it was a quiet Tuesday in downtown, this place had a line around the corner. We waited about 20min and the line was longer than when we arrived. AND FOR GOOD REASON!! There was only one young woman working behind the counter - I guess the other employee couldn't make it in - but she was crushing it! She wasn't flustered by the crowd, she was still friendly and smiling, talkative, and professional. Once I ordered, I knew I'd made the right choice to wait in line. I got a double scoop with chocolate and white mint Oreo. The chocolate was decadent and rich. Super creamy! The white mint Oreo was just the right balance of minty with huge chunks of Oreo. Also super creamy! Met a local in line if front of me and he said it was worth the wait. He was right! I got a waffle cone with coconut and black licorice ice cream. ***Warning*** If you are a fan of black licorice and would like to try this delectable confection, do not- I repeat-DO NOT wear any light colors at all, unless you want to try to get black food dye out of your clothes. I personally don't want to waste my time fiddling about with baking soda and stain removers, but I don't know what you like to do for fun. If you're like me, wear black. Trust me. Huckleberry Ice Cream. Need I say more? Okayyyy, if you insist. Obviously I get the Huckleberry Ice Cream every time I get a chance to stop here. I love all sorts of ice cream flavors, but you can't get huckleberry just anywhere so I need to enjoy it when I can! I always get the sugar cone but you can get a cake cone or cup instead if you prefer. I typically get a single scoop because they're huge, but one time I mistakenly got a double scoop beause I forgot and boy was that a lot of ice cream. I didn't let it go to waste though! They have a long list of flavors including unique ones like black licorice (which my dad needs to try because he loves black licorice), cardamom, mexican chocolate, and maple walnut. Of course they have plenty of staple flavors as well. They also sell sundaes, shakes, sorbet slushes, and rootbeer floats. And FYI you can also take pints and quarts to go of any flavor. I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't mind getting ice cream when it's cold out so I'm appreciative they're open year round too. Big Dipper ice cream where have you been all my life? Well at least in Billings, MT. I mean I remember having to walk to Safeway or Hardee's to get some ice cream around downtown a few years back. So few options. And now there is this gem. I walked in and felt like a kid in a candy store, but instead I was in an ice cream shop. So clean, bright and new. Different flavors on the wall to admire. Friendly people greeting too. I know I tried the black licorice out of curiosity. I eventually decided on one of my favorites. Peanut butter cup. It was AMAZING! One scoop was more than plenty. I sat down and enjoyed my ice cream and let the spring sun shine on me. It is quite nice how the shop faces south so they get lots of sunshine. Makes the place shine! There really isn't much seating though. But that usually is how ice cream shops are. There are about three benches and tables. Most people probably grab their cones and head to walk around town. Arriving in Billings at 900 PM I decided to go for a little stroll downtown. Padme and I came across an ice cream shop with a line. I look inside and I see potential. Big scoops, quality flavors and waffle cones. Why not? Padme had driven for 10 hours with me, she deserved a scoop and so did I. Ice cream passed all the tests, has to be homemade weekly if not daily. Great texture, great flavor and beautifully big scoops in the large waffle cone (unlike the new fancy ice cream ships that fill the waffle cone halfway with dainty scoops and charge you an arm and a leg like jerks). Waffle cone was absolutely delicious, vanilla flavor, nice crunch and fresh at 930 at night when they close at 10. The small cone they gave me for my dog padme was huge and delicious (I shared). Must come here if in billings or driving through and want ice cream. Super happy to have tried it. read more
