The overall mood was fairly quiet, but as long as my friend and I kept our tone fairly reserved, nobody else was bothered by our conversation. I ordered a small pot of tea, which was wonderful on a cold day -- but the selection of other items looked great! The barista was really helpful, too. The high ceilings and somewhat antique decor really fit in with the history of the South Side. I'll be back for sure! read more

One of the coziest and prettiest coffee places in the area! The coffee here is so delicious, maybe even the best I've had in pgh! Didn't even need creamer or sugar, the flavor was perfect. The pastries were also good, with the raspberry lime scone having a lovely flavor and perfect with the coffee. Not just the food, but the vibe of this place is perfect! It's cozy with a mix of couches and tables, perfect to study, chat, or read, plus their outside little patio has beautiful plants and is a great spot to enjoy your drink. Hidden gem in Southside works area!! Their coffee is very well made and they have plenty of snacks and food choices available. I love that they have an oatmeal and yogurt bar where you can choose your own toppings that they offer. This cafe is study friendly, has many tables and outdoor seating available. It's very colorful and vibrant inside with the decorations and different types of colors going on! We got an iced mocha latte and an iced lavender latte. If you like your drinks on the sweeter side, I recommend adding more sweeteners as they come a bit slightly sweetened. read more

It's definitely a popular spot in town and it seems like the line can get quite long during peak times on weekends. My wife has been a regular here for years and I don't think it's as busy on weekdays. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but I can say that the oatmeal and toppings are delicious. The staff are friendly and work efficiently to keep the line moving. I also picked up a blueberry muffin which was fresh and moist. The inside seating area is quite comfortable with a fireplace, something I particularly enjoy. This would be a great place to post up with a drink and a snack to do some work. I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for our morning coffees. We have been going to local coffee shops every Sunday morning and on this morning we decided to go to Big Dog Coffee. It's located on Sarah Street in the Southside and the inside is quaint. They have a place to order your coffee as well as a display for their pastries and cookies. Beyond that they have a bunch of tables, comfy seating, colorful art and lime walls in the main area. That continues on into a back room where there is extra seating as well. For my coffee on this morning I went with a honey latte (seasonal, so it contained pumpkin spices) and then ordered a mocha for my wife. They serve intelligentsa coffee here and use Hollander for their chocolates and caramel. Our drinks were ready within a few minutes and we were quickly on our way. My latte here ended up being really good as it was very honey forward and you could really taste the milk. It hid the coffee a little more than I would have liked, but since I did enjoy that honey, I wasn't too sad about it. My wife thought her mocha was good as well. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. My wife and I both enjoyed our drinks and I thought the shop was unique too. read more

While the oatmeal bar (the reason I made the trip) had plenty of fresh fruits along with plenty of options for toppings, it was disappointing that oatmeal was barely warm, which is the whole point of oatmeal. In the times that I've visited I've ordered a pour over, cortado, strawberry banana smoothie, and a plum ginger iced tea. The pour over was PHENOMENAL, and if you're a fan of black coffee I highly recommend it. The cortado and strawberry banana smoothie were both pretty good as well, but nothing remarkable. I really enjoyed the plum ginger tea as well, it was something different yet very refreshing and not too sweet. I LOVE this place! The atmosphere and service are fantastic and the menu has options for everyone, even if you don't like coffee. I've wanted to try Big Dog Coffee for a very long time, but have never been in the neighborhood early enough to get a caffeine fix...until last weekend! Finally, after a workout at the climbing gym, a friend and I strolled over to grab ourselves some drinks before going about our day. Since my friend was feeling a little under the weather (not plague-related!), I didn't sample her tea - she was very happy with it, though. I meanwhile stuck to the honey and spiced latte I ordered. I have to say, this thing was amazing, albeit very sweet. I only drank half of it and took the rest home to drink the next day because of its sweetness. Still, I personally have quite the sweet tooth, so while I wanted to pace myself during my visit (due to attending a birthday party later in the day), that flavor was a good thing in my book. And it truly made me want to come back to try every other drink on the menu. My friend and I opted to sit inside and cool down after our workout + our walk to Big Dog; that said, I absolutely cannot wait until I come back and enjoy some more coffee while sitting out on their outdoor patio. It looked so cozy and green and inviting! Not to knock the indoor seating, which was equally cozy. The general decor is so bright and inviting, and that's in addition to the numerous Baron Batch artworks hanging in every room. There's no other coffee shop quite like this one and I love it so much. Big Dog Coffee is absolutely delightful, and I really hope I'm able to visit more often in the future...maybe it's time for me to prioritize morning and lunchtime workouts, to help ensure I'm in the right part of town at the right time of day! read more

Big Dog is one of the better coffee shops in the Southside. The inside is very cozy and there is a fireplace in the winter. There is also a very nice garden/patio space in the back. Big Dog is always filled with people working and studying! The coffee is very good and they offer many non-dairy milk options. A few times I have ordered flavored coffees, but found them to be too sweet. However, I always really enjoy their non-flavored drinks. My boyfriend really likes their seasonal specialty drinks. They currently have a maple latte on the menu that is very tasty. Big Dog has an awesome selection of pastries and desserts. I like the whoopie pie! They also have a yogurt and oatmeal bar that I have heard is very good, but I have not had an opportunity to try.
