One of many coffee shops in Southside, but this one definitely stands out! The inside is very cozy. They also have a beautiful patio in the back that you might miss if you don't know about it! On my most recent visit I had the iced chai and my husband had cold brew with cream. The chai is one of my favorites and it did not disappoint. Service is quick and friendly. read more

One of the coziest and prettiest coffee places in the area! The coffee here is so delicious, maybe even the best I've had in pgh! Didn't even need creamer or sugar, the flavor was perfect. The pastries were also good, with the raspberry lime scone having a lovely flavor and perfect with the coffee. Not just the food, but the vibe of this place is perfect! It's cozy with a mix of couches and tables, perfect to study, chat, or read, plus their outside little patio has beautiful plants and is a great spot to enjoy your drink. Hidden gem in Southside works area!! Their coffee is very well made and they have plenty of snacks and food choices available. I love that they have an oatmeal and yogurt bar where you can choose your own toppings that they offer. This cafe is study friendly, has many tables and outdoor seating available. It's very colorful and vibrant inside with the decorations and different types of colors going on! We got an iced mocha latte and an iced lavender latte. If you like your drinks on the sweeter side, I recommend adding more sweeteners as they come a bit slightly sweetened. read more

Visited big dog after 3 years on being back in Pitt. I ordered their seasonal orange blossom latte which was bomb! It can be a bit too sweet if you don't like sugar in your coffee. Loved hanging out here! I like the rustic feel! read more

I would not recommend this place based on the local amateur artist that they feature. They only feature one artist and he is a known issue, he was rude to me on multiple occasions while I was at the coffee shop, including screaming at me. you are who you associate with. read more

Overall, I had a good experience. Staff was friendly regardless of how busy they were. The venue, on a Sunday morning, had relatively easy parking. It is a dog friendly location. Lots of seating - inside and outside. Only downside was the coffee itself wasn't spectacular. I had a Puerto Rican blend that tasted kind of watered down. My friend had a caramel macchiato that also didn't taste great. read more

This has been my favorite coffee shop for many years and even though I no longer live in Pittsburgh, it is a must visit every time I come back. This is a cute little coffee shop with a little outdoor patio area as well (and if you're lucky you will get a glimpse of the owners two big dogs). This is by far one of my favorite coffee shops in Pittsburgh. It's a cozy space with a mix of table and soft seating. There is usually a fire going on the fireplace too! They also have a nice patio that you can sit on when the weather is nice. What is probably the coolest part of Big Dog is that they let you bring your dog in when you want to grab coffee and you can sit on the patio with your dog too if you want to stay a little while. They always have a little tin with doggie treats in it too. I'm a fan of their regular "Big Dog Blend" coffee, but they have great seasonal lattes too that they make with homemade syrups. read more

I stopped here to pick up some oatmeal from their oatmeal bar on Saturday morning around 10:30 AM. This was my first visited, and the first thing I noticed was the huge and myriad artwork on the walls by local artist Baron Batch. The second thing I noticed was the long line of customers. It's definitely a popular spot in town and it seems like the line can get quite long during peak times on weekends. My wife has been a regular here for years and I don't think it's as busy on weekdays. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but I can say that the oatmeal and toppings are delicious. The staff are friendly and work efficiently to keep the line moving. I also picked up a blueberry muffin which was fresh and moist. The inside seating area is quite comfortable with a fireplace, something I particularly enjoy. This would be a great place to post up with a drink and a snack to do some work. Definitely stop in and try Big Dog if you're in the area! read more

I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for our morning coffees. We have been going to local coffee shops every Sunday morning and on this morning we decided to go to Big Dog Coffee. It's located on Sarah Street in the Southside and the inside is quaint. They have a place to order your coffee as well as a display for their pastries and cookies. Beyond that they have a bunch of tables, comfy seating, colorful art and lime walls in the main area. That continues on into a back room where there is extra seating as well. For my coffee on this morning I went with a honey latte (seasonal, so it contained pumpkin spices) and then ordered a mocha for my wife. They serve intelligentsa coffee here and use Hollander for their chocolates and caramel. Our drinks were ready within a few minutes and we were quickly on our way. My latte here ended up being really good as it was very honey forward and you could really taste the milk. It hid the coffee a little more than I would have liked, but since I did enjoy that honey, I wasn't too sad about it. My wife thought her mocha was good as well. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. My wife and I both enjoyed our drinks and I thought the shop was unique too. read more

I was really excited to try this place especially because they have an oatmeal bar. First the good - nice and cozy spot, friendly staff. Now for the mediocre - I had a latte which was just ok. While the oatmeal bar (the reason I made the trip) had plenty of fresh fruits along with plenty of options for toppings, it was disappointing that oatmeal was barely warm, which is the whole point of oatmeal. Maybe next time I'll ask them to stir it up good and make sure it's hot/warm. In any case, I'll give it another try and hope for the best read more

LOVE the atmosphere of this place. Local artwork, lots of seating inside and on covered patio outside. In the times that I've visited I've ordered a pour over, cortado, strawberry banana smoothie, and a plum ginger iced tea. The pour over was PHENOMENAL, and if you're a fan of black coffee I highly recommend it. The cortado and strawberry banana smoothie were both pretty good as well, but nothing remarkable. I really enjoyed the plum ginger tea as well, it was something different yet very refreshing and not too sweet. I LOVE this place! The atmosphere and service are fantastic and the menu has options for everyone, even if you don't like coffee. The only thing I will note is that parking can be be difficult, so plan to park a couple streets over or in a garage (no free parking). read more

Favorite coffee shop in Pittsburgh. I love to sit by the fire this time of year with a latte and read. So cozy with plenty of space, where you can either lounge in a soft chair or do some work at a table. The baristas are always friendly. Visiting Pittsburgh for the weekend. This place is awesome! I love the ambiance created by the eclectic Baron Batch art pieces. I was particularly fascinated by the Mandalorian art piece since my hubby is a Star Wars fan. The place is so cozy and warm on a cold winter day you'll want to just hang out and sip coffee while chillin' out. The service was fast probably less than 5 minute wait. We took our orders to go, but would've love to stay longer if we had time. read more

I absolutely loved the quant and relaxing feel to this beautiful coffee shop. There are all kinds of coffee choices(macchiotos and lattes etc) along with teas and other drinks. Then they have bagels and breads or more sweet pastries. Then the most wonderful part was the dog treat bucket and you could definitely tell who the regular pup customers were as they went straight to the bucket. read more

Cute place to grab a cup coffee and study or read. They brew with Intelligentsia coffee, which is quite exceptional coffee, if you are familiar with quality coffee brands. I ordered a Mocha and my husband ordered a chamomile tea. The coffee was good and I would maybe go back. They have cool art and this coffee house interior is very comfortable like a coffee house should be. They have a small, but very inviting outdoor patio that is shaded. I've wanted to try Big Dog Coffee for a very long time, but have never been in the neighborhood early enough to get a caffeine fix...until last weekend! Finally, after a workout at the climbing gym, a friend and I strolled over to grab ourselves some drinks before going about our day. Since my friend was feeling a little under the weather (not plague-related!), I didn't sample her tea - she was very happy with it, though. I meanwhile stuck to the honey and spiced latte I ordered. I have to say, this thing was amazing, albeit very sweet. I only drank half of it and took the rest home to drink the next day because of its sweetness. Still, I personally have quite the sweet tooth, so while I wanted to pace myself during my visit (due to attending a birthday party later in the day), that flavor was a good thing in my book. And it truly made me want to come back to try every other drink on the menu. My friend and I opted to sit inside and cool down after our workout + our walk to Big Dog; that said, I absolutely cannot wait until I come back and enjoy some more coffee while sitting out on their outdoor patio. It looked so cozy and green and inviting! Not to knock the indoor seating, which was equally cozy. The general decor is so bright and inviting, and that's in addition to the numerous Baron Batch artworks hanging in every room. There's no other coffee shop quite like this one and I love it so much. Big Dog Coffee is absolutely delightful, and I really hope I'm able to visit more often in the future...maybe it's time for me to prioritize morning and lunchtime workouts, to help ensure I'm in the right part of town at the right time of day! read more

Big Dog is one of the better coffee shops in the Southside. The inside is very cozy and there is a fireplace in the winter. There is also a very nice garden/patio space in the back. Big Dog is always filled with people working and studying! The coffee is very good and they offer many non-dairy milk options. A few times I have ordered flavored coffees, but found them to be too sweet. However, I always really enjoy their non-flavored drinks. My boyfriend really likes their seasonal specialty drinks. They currently have a maple latte on the menu that is very tasty. Big Dog has an awesome selection of pastries and desserts. I like the whoopie pie! They also have a yogurt and oatmeal bar that I have heard is very good, but I have not had an opportunity to try. Big Dog is slightly pricier than other coffee shops in the area, but is a great place to meet friends or get some work done. read more

The best thing about this coffee shop is that dogs are allowed. I mean come on, nothing makes for a brighter human day than interaction with furry and lovable four-legged pals. The coffee here is decent and pretty much on par with any other coffee shop. I will say that the smoothies are worth a try for sure. The only pastries I've had were a bagel and a donut and those were both ok. The decor is colorful, funky and pleasant. All good things. All-in-all a good place to check out. read more

Needle & Bean is located on Castle Shannon Blvd and has a clever name whenever you realize it's part record shop and part coffee shop. There was only a single other patron there whenever we arrived and he was on the way out, so we had the shop to ourselves for a bit. The shop itself is segmented into a seating area for the coffee shop patrons and the other half for the records. The inside of the shop is well lit with lots of natural light and helped by the light colored wood floors. Since I was just here for the coffee, I didn't really check out the record section of the shop and instead paid attention to the coffee and goodies. For my coffee on this morning I decided to go with a large hot americano while my wife went with a small iced americano. Then I also ordered my kids a chocolate chip cookie each and the family a brownie. Total cost was $12 which was awesome. My wife and I both really enjoyed our coffees here as the roast for the americano was super dark and rich. Since we both love darker coffees, we clearly made the right choice and it was easily one of the better coffees I have had in awhile. My kids seemed to enjoy the cookies and the brownie and so everyone was happy. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. My wife and I really enjoyed our coffees here, our kids their treats and the price was fair as well!

If you look down you can see a lower level of picnic tables and a white tent, maybe for events. Our waiter, Tyler, took good care of us this evening. He helped us choose our beers and took our orders. We feasted on Metwurst (for me) with beer cheese spatzle and sauerkraut. So delicious. Had to take a couple donuts "to go" so I could just get out of the elements of the weather. I'm so glad I did. I learned that all of the donuts are made fresh in house DAILY with real ingredients... and there was a wide variety of options! You can tell just by looking at them, that they're fresh and different than others you've ever tried before. Check them out. Truly, you can tell that these are handmade donuts. Yum! The shop is cute, a bit rustic looking, but suits Carson Street so well. There are some little stickers and nick nacks around the shop, but nothing too crazy, just very particular and with purpose. A nice little coffee place to take a break inside or outside. They have the best coffee in the city, great place for work or meeting up with friends. They do have delicious made fresh daily from scratch oatmeal, they also have the best chocolate chip cookie in the city and a big variety of desserts. The back patio and front stoop are dog-friendly, complete with a watering bowl, dog "parking" and doggie treats inside. I think this is very nice. There is also a complimentary Wifi. This place is among the top coffee shops in Pittsburgh. It's a fantastic feeling that's extremely welcoming, including a working hearth to take a seat close on chilly days. The java is as great or better than any corporate chain in the region, and undoubtedly a lot better in relation to the Beehive. Big Dog Coffee is inviting from the outside and continues to be so once one enters the shop. The coffee selection is great and I love that I can drink it is a cup if I am drinking it in-house. Although the place is somewhat small, there are people engaging in meetings, socializing or working. In the spring, summer and fall, the outside patio is enjoyable. I also appreciate that the owners live upstairs and are a vital part of the shop. read more

I love Big Dog.Sometimes I leave for work an hour early just so I can sit and savor my coffee at Big Dog. The coffee is superb, the atmosphere is fantastic-- they even have an actual wood-burning fireplace with an actual fire inside it in the winter. I recommend it to everyone. read more
