Very hopping Friday night spot! Sat at the bar in order to be seated quickly. Prime rib the Friday special sold out when we arrived @ 7pm (they ipen @,5p). Walleye was the next choice & a good one. It could have used a bit more salt or seasoning for my taste, though not a morsel of them left . Salad bar was a nice offering, though could be elevated a bit with more variety. Made reservations because the special for the evening was broasted chicken and it gets quite busy. When we arrived and found our table the owner (Al) made his way over and informed us that they were having trouble with their broaster and they were substituting the Philly Cheesesteak for the evenings special. We all ordered fish and chips . It took forty minutes to receive our food and in that time frame I watched 8 orders of BROASTED CHICKEN come from the kitchen and go to tables. I'm sure they were locals and always showed on broasted chicken night. We were not locals or repeat customer's so we were lied to so that there would be enough chicken for the locals. The fish and chips were overcooked and the breading burnt. My wife ordered broiled shrimp and asked for a dish of melted butter to which our waitress replied: it comes with it. What she received was a cup of butter flavored oil that you would squirt on the grill to fry hash browns in. It is in no way - shape or form butter. Never not good! This is the kind of place that used to be abundant in small towns across the Midwest, but are fewer and farther between with the advent of chains. Amy and Al are salt of the earth. Nightly specials give good variety. Food is always cooked to perfection. So what's good? Let me think: chicken, shrimp, burgers, Phillies, ribs, fish, hash browns, fries, rings.... Ok, everything! Okay, so...the Big Fish. This is one of those fascinating Yelp situations, where you gotta figure out what you're rating. The food is only three stars, but - YOU'RE EATING NEXT TO A GIANT FISH, so that gives you the extra star for atmosphere, right there. Even if you never stop to eat here, you gotta stop and take a picture of that fish. So, once again, let me be clear on this: the food is absolutely acceptable, and certainly edible, but it is not four-star food. But seriously, how high are your standards for cuisine gonna be in the middle of nowhere, where the next closest joint is probably in Cass Lake, and likely isn't any better? The fare runs to standard American, though surprisingly the fish they served was not local walleye. They sell "pig wings" which are basically rib tips slathered in bbq/wing sauce, which are actually pretty good. And they do carry the standard assortment of alcohols, including local-ish beers. Everything is decent enough. I've actually been told their salad bar is really good, though they only have it on weekends. The atmosphere is rustic north woods, with photos of fish that locals have caught on one wall, stuffed trophy animals of assorted kinds posted around, etc. (oddly, the mounted bear on the wall is not of the locally found American Black Bear species, but is a Sun Bear, found in Southeast Asia - ??). There are also cabins associated with the place, and they look real nice - though to be honest, i didn't go inside any of 'em. So, basically: - Totally worth stopping by if you're looking for a place to eat locally - Food is solid, though not inspired. - There's a giant freakin' fish outside, which is pretty damn cool. read more

Got there too late, missed the prime rib special. Got the walleye instead. It had a nice light breading and cooked properly. Breasted chicken was juicy, not over cooked. Super friendly staff. I'll go back when I get to the area, but make sure to get there earlier for the prime rib. read more

Great place to go when you are in fishing camp! The owner, Al, greets everyone at the door and makes you feel at home. I had the all you can eat white fish and it was cooked perfectly. One of my cohorts has a burger and sweet potato fries and I snatched a few of them. They were cooked perfectly as well. Not a five star restaurant but it was damn good and very memorable! read more

Here for a third visit. Can't miss the place because of the big fish outside. Very friendly place. Basic North Woods menu but the service is prompt and friendly, the prices reasonable and the food is decently prepared with generous portions. We'll be back the next time we are in the neighborhood. While visiting in Minnesota, we stopped at the Big Fish for dinner on a Thursday night. I had the 1/2 rack bbq ribs, with sweet potato fries and my husband had steak with mushrooms and baked potato. Excellent!!! Salads were great, drinks were good and the waitstaff very friendly. Would definitely recommend!!! A picture of the Big Fish was a plus. read more

We stopped at the Big Fish on the way back from Duluth to Bemidji. My husband ordered the Wednesday special which was broasted chicken. The chicken was moist and delicious. I ordered the walleye which was also good. The plates were large. We shared with our kids (3 and 5 years) and there was plenty for all of us. I wasn't expecting much, a picture of the kids by the fish and a bite to eat, but was pleasantly surprised by the food and service. We left a few minutes after 9. A group came in at that time and they kept the kitchen open for them which was nice. Overall a good experience. read more
