    The Big Fish
    Scott F.

Okay, so...the Big Fish. This is one of those fascinating Yelp situations, where you gotta figure out what you're rating. The food is only three stars, but - YOU'RE EATING NEXT TO A GIANT FISH, so that gives you the extra star for atmosphere, right there. Even if you never stop to eat here, you gotta stop and take a picture of that fish. So, once again, let me be clear on this: the food is absolutely acceptable, and certainly edible, but it is not four-star food. But seriously, how high are your standards for cuisine gonna be in the middle of nowhere, where the next closest joint is probably in Cass Lake, and likely isn't any better? The fare runs to standard American, though surprisingly the fish they served was not local walleye. They sell "pig wings" which are basically rib tips slathered in bbq/wing sauce, which are actually pretty good. And they do carry the standard assortment of alcohols, including local-ish beers. Everything is decent enough. I've actually been told their salad bar is really good, though they only have it on weekends. The atmosphere is rustic north woods, with photos of fish that locals have caught on one wall, stuffed trophy animals of assorted kinds posted around, etc. (oddly, the mounted bear on the wall is not of the locally found American Black Bear species, but is a Sun Bear, found in Southeast Asia - ??). There are also cabins associated with the place, and they look real nice - though to be honest, i didn't go inside any of 'em. So, basically: - Totally worth stopping by if you're looking for a place to eat locally - Food is solid, though not inspired. - There's a giant freakin' fish outside, which is pretty damn cool.

We went for lunch with a party of 9 (5 adults, 4 kids) and a dog. On the nice shaded patio, we…read moreenjoyed the cheese curds (according to the 6 year old there were 36), shrimp tacos, smash burgers, chicken tenders and a Cobb salad. The large beer was as big as our heads and easy to share between 3 adults. Our waitress, Olivia was so good and patient with the kids and multiple requests. As we parted ways she even gave us recos on shops to visit. We highly recommend Bar 209 for families of all ages.

Our server was working her tail off, with a large table near us, outdoor patio tables, and many tables inside. To that end, we waited a bit here and there but she was apologetic and clearly working hard so no worries. We started with dry rub, bone in wings which I accompanied with a Bemidji IPA. Both were fabulous. Next, we split a smash burger with fries. The meal had a lot of potential but the fries were warm, not hot, and the burger a little small (but it did have a double patty and tons of sauted onions). We finished the meal with the Big Cookie Sundae and big it was. Waaaay too much to eat with only 2 people. The cookie was delicious. Soft and gooey inside with a nice crisp around the outside edges of the cookie. We tried but couldn't finish it. Liked the brewery vibe in there with lots of seating and exposed brick. Nice stop.

There are only about 3-4 dining options in and around the lake so Clancy's is usually busy. That's the good stuff. Unfortunately the food does not impress. We ordered 2 fish and chips. What we got were decent fries and 4 tiny fish nuggets. We paid $17. For each order. I was shocked when we got these tiny little fish nuggets when we're right here on the lake where fish is bountiful. I was so disappointed. I gave one star for the location and one star for the nice guy that took our order. But that's all I got. Clancy's need to focus on improving the quality of food on their menu. Sadly, I don't think I will go back.

This place has a wonderful community vibe and you will leave having made new friends (there is also a "quiet side" of the restaurant you can sit at if you'd prefer to be left alone instead). Andy was our server and he was absolutely amazing. Can't say enough good things about the guy. He was just and all around good guy and is one of the reasons the restaurant feels like going over to your friend's house for a hot dish. He was friendly, attentive, fantastic at his job, and took the time to make us feel right at home. The food was awesome. Hubby got a burger and tots and I got the wings and a salad. All fantastic.
