We decided to visit Big John's because their website said they had gluten free pizza. However, when we arrived, there was no gluten free ANYTHING other than a salad or ice cream that I would not trust enough for my daughter with celiac disease to eat. The place is run down, the arcade (also touted on their website) no longer exists, and seating was pretty limited. Robert Irvine could probably help the place a little... Given that we were in the middle of nowhere, West Virginia, the celiac had a soda and the rest of us had a variety of food from the small menu. The food was ok. My husband's burger was overcooked (the menu stated all burgers would be cooked to medium), my kids burger was pretty good. Our group also had fries (yummy), a milkshake, kids meal chicken tenders, and a chicken sub. Would I go back? No. Do they need to update their website? YES!!!! Was the food ok? Yeah. read more

I come here annually because family members like it. It's pretty horrible. It feels unclean and the food has been awful no matter what I've tried (just about everything on the menu). I guess if you have kids the arcade may make it worth it but I'd rather eat gas station snacks than any of their food. read more

Stopped in here after hiking to hopefully get some local food... The pizza crust seemed like it was made with bisquick and was just not good. Reminded me of the single serving microwave pizzas you eat when you are a kid. We did not have phone service and asked for the Wi-Fi password so we could plan our driving route but we're told we couldn't use the Wi-Fi as it was for staff only. I understand that but it would have been nice to be more helpful about it. If this is literally your only food option then it's technically edible but I would rather get snacks from the gas station across the street read more

Stopped for a late lunch on a summer weekday afternoon. Restaurant was dead, but that's not entirely unexpected. My wife and I split an order of (fried) pub pickles, and then she got the baked mac and cheese and I got a stuffed burger. Pickles were lightly breaded and VERY salty. Her Mac and cheese (with candied bacon on top) was pretty good, but was pretty bland as far as the cheese goes; and they didn't bring out the garlic bread that it was supposed to come with. The burger bun had a cool toasted WVU logo on it, which added some uniqueness to its appearance, but also made it taste like burnt toast. The burger itself was dry, and would be a bit better if dressed with lettuce/tomato and maybe some sort of sauce or ketchup and mustard. All in all, it wasn't terrible, but it's far from great. If you don't have little kids, or a big group, there are far better places 15-20 minutes away in Davis and Thomas. read more

This place holds a special place in my heart because my late mother n law and I enjoyed burgers here together 3 months before she passed. This was almost 7 years ago. Every year on vacation I try to revisit this special place. I've only had the burgers and that's fine by me because they are delicious! This year my entire family enjoyed a meal here. Stopped randomly for lunch on the way from Blackwater Falls to Seneca Rocks. Spent $40 for 3 people. Got a burger/fries, steak/cheese sub with fries, buffalo chicken tenders and 3 drinks. Not horrible, but not great either. Noise from the arcade was overwhelmingly loud. Sit outside if weather permits. From the outside, the place looks nice. Theres a pond to the side of it where you could do some outside dining, weather permitting. Once you get inside, youll notice the loud noise from the arcade thats on your right. As you walk in, pick up the menu and to your left youll see where you can order ice cream and turn in your tickets for prizes from the arcade. Once you have decided on what you want, step up the the counter and place your order. The place is spacious, there is a second level for dining, but I believe its only for group events. For the most part, the place was clean. After we had sat down with our drinks, probably within 15 mins I got a headache. The arcades must have been on max volume. Our food took a good amount of time to get to us. I noticed some people running around with food on their hands, as if they worked there. They looked like the neighborhood bums. Our food came, and yes the bums brought it. I ordered a small pizza and this plate that came with a charbroiled chicken w/rice. Tasteless to say the least. Food was cold, as if it had been sitting where ever for about 10 mins. I was disappointed with what was served to me. I didnt even finish nor did I take the left overs home. I bet the dogs wouldnt even eat that garbage. On the way out, I decided to go to the restroom and urinate all over the floor, but to my surprise it was clean and smelled good. So I opted not to. I would have to say this place would be great for a birthday party. But if you are going out on a date, Id recommend eating at the gas station across the street. read more

Um... well... yeah. This place is not Big, and there are no "Fixin's" rather an eclectic menu of poorly executed crap. I've never seen a Steak "Philly" (how dare they call it that!) and a "roasted pork loin dinner" on the same menu... Service, well, you order at the cash register and then sit it a dusty, musty, dark forgotten dining room that is right next to an "Arcade" if you wanna call it that... The "Philly" was soggy from the grease, I'm guessing they heated it up in the microwave and put some cheese on it and threw it in the oven for a minute... I would have rather had a hot pocket. It would've tasted better. Man the Mountain Dew was great, ice cold, and free refills! Just keep driving past it and get to Davis (if you are traveling north) If you are hungry, go across the street to the convenience store... there is a Subway there. read more

Just had a casual rehearsal dinner at Big Johns this past weekend. It was wonderful!! Julie and her staff were great!. She had pizza, wings, salad and drinks ready for us on arrival. Variety of pizzas were served and the flavor of wings were delicious. Everything was freshly made and very hot when served. We had around 72 guest and they all raved how good the food and service was. Thank you Big Johns for making our night special. read more

Not good. My wife and 3 small children went here during our vacation. $50 for 2 Ragu type spaghetti dinners, 2 kids burger meals, a hoagie and breadsticks. Let's put it this way, this was at the beginning of our vacation, it is the closest restaurant to where we are staying, and there is a 0% chance we will be back. Service was fine, but you order as you come in and have to clear your own table. Yet there is both a tip line when you pay at the beginning and also tip boxes all over. Good - poor, service - fine. Almost didn't go because of some of the low reviews, but I'm glad we did. Pizza was actually really good. Salad was fresh and tasty. Chicken tenders and fries are, well, tenders and fries. The arcade games were fun for the kids. Food was out relatively quickly, especially with the crew distracted by the games. Bring plenty of cash for game play-only brought 10, wish I had 20. Don't let the low stars keep you from here. read more

BAD Food. Probably the only place I have ever seen to use toast as dumplings in the chicken and dumplings which came out of the kitchen cold. Grilled chicken salad probably didn't have 2 oz of chicken in it. Obviously people go there for the arcade games which are all over priced most are $1 a game. We won't return. read more

As sad as I am to post this review, I feel compelled to. When I was growing up, Canaan Valley was a popular vacation destination for my family. And we'd always love going to Big Johns and play the arcade games, feed the fish, and eat their delicious pizza. However, under their new management, their food is simply edible if that. My family and I ate there recently and were greatly disappointed. They charged $4 per topping. We ordered a large pepperoni, ham, sausage, and extra cheese (meat lovers) and a small cheese pizza for my nephew. For those and 5 drinks our total came out to be almost $60. We sat down and waited a good while before receiving our food. When the food arrived, I immediately noticed the cheese wasn't even cooked. It was cold. THE PIZZA THEY MADE WAS A FROZEN PEPPERONI PIZZA WITH SAUSAGE MUSHROOMS AND HAM AND MELTED CHEESE ON IT TO LOOK PRESENTABLE. But it wasn't even cooked. It was greasy, undercooked, and just not worth the price. I could maybe understand taking the arcade games out for "covid issues". But i would've been better off licking a frozen pizza like a popsicle. read more

A small town restaurant with gluten free options. I am glad we gave Big John's a chance despite the name...which kinda scared me...and the other reviews. The gluten free pizza was really tasty and to me surprising to find in such a small area. My wife got the wings and from the fact that there was no conversation...she talks alot...they must have been pretty good. The best part. You can feed some awesome catfish off the back deck. Cons. If you pay for extra toppings on your pizza they need to actually put a decent amount of toppings on your pizza. read more

They called it a meal, but it had congealed, once you order the mac and cheese, consider it penance for all your misdeeds, what they call a steak, was definitely a mi-steak, the green beans were generally fine, opposed to the salty gravy grime, they call it big john because that's where it belongs, put it in the porcelain throne flip the handle and say so-long, but it was only one trip to this restaurant we made during our stay, one more than was necessary when you heed what the others say, but oh, the mountain dew, that which they managed not to screw, and free refills. read more

We stopped at Big John's on our way out to Blackwater Falls. I'm glad I didn't check yelp prior to my stop because I would have been very mislead and missed out on a great place. The staff was EXTREMELY friendly and attentive. They went out of their way to make sure we were satisfied even though it isn't waiting service its counter service. The food was phenomenal. We had the fried catfish and chicken and dumplings. The prices are unbeatable and the quality is exactly what you'd expect if you know what true home cooking is. The green beans were just how they should be made in the South and the homemade Mac and cheese reminded me of my grandma's. It is somewhat loud inside with all of the arcade games, but thats evident as soon as you walk in the door. If you can't handle the noise then you should leave before ordering instead of bashing a great restaurant on yelp. It was a nice treat to play some ski ball after a great meal. Arcades are hard to come by these days. Overall, a great experience and a great place to go eat for under $10 a person EASILY. read more

I couldn't give it zero stars. We went to the buffet and had to ask five times for plates to be put on the bar. That would make one pizza at a time and it would be gone in 12 seconds. Then 10 minutes later they would bring another one. Completely and utterly disorganized. One of my friends was with me finally actually got up and carried two tubs of dirty dishes back into the kitchen and started yelling at people. Ha! That was awesome. Horrible food. No service to even critique. I ordered steak, Med. Came out ex well. Tasted vinegary and odd. Sides cold. Had to ask for kids menu, was given it, then ordered kids menu items only to be told "we don't have some of the kids menu items now". Made me order large pizza for a 5 yr old. Adult ordered spaghetti, got a tiny bowl with fake sauce and nothing else. Chix and dumpling special was a small plate of chix and chunks of bread. When we asked about it we were told they make it with "biscuits" and nothing was done to remedy any of the situations. Last but not least, kid had tickets saved up from arcade games and we waited around 15 minutes being ignored by all staff. Ended up having to leave without cashing in for prizes. This is my first and only review ever posted. Options are limited here in Canaan Valley but this was horrific. We have been there many times in the past without incident. stopped here with a large group heading to nearby Timberline ski resort. It's a big place, you order at the counter then take a number to your table to have your food delivered. They have a mix of sandwiches, pasta dishes, salads, and pizzas. It's not gourmet, but the food was decent. Decor is nice, and the place is clean and well maintained, there's an arcade to keep the kids busy, and the owner/manager (not sure which) was incredibly nice to the kids allowing them to round their tickets from the arcade up to get a prize even if they were short a few tickets. Really a great place for groups heading to Timberline to grab a meal before checking in. read more

Stopped here on a Friday evening in June. Service was rather slow. We were with a large group and took almost 45 minutes for all the food to make it out. The waitress would bring one item at a time. The group ordered pizzas, wings, and some had sandwiches. Pizza was sub par, poor taste and took doctoring with crushed red pepper and salt to make edible. Crust was not good.
