Given 60 years of dining history in the Canaan Valley, we have experienced nearly all restaurants in Davis and Thomas, and yet we return several times to Hickory Dining Room. Service is outstanding, ambience is great, menu is about right, and the food is excellent. We enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at Hickory. Rib eyes are great, as is salmon, and several other choices... Perfect Date night with your wife, and she will delight in her choice. This sit down dining option at the Canaan Valley Resort was a good option while staying at the resort. They had a pretty basic menu. I went with some Caribbean Jerk Wings (pricey but meaty) and a Chef's Salad which had a whole hard boiled egg and tons of delicious meats and cheeses. The ranch was great too. The staff was super friendly from the hostess to the waitress to the people clearing tables. There are bus tours for people at the resort and they had a buffet set up for those folks. If you get in after a bus tour returns, you may find it a bit slow. If I was staying here, I'd probably dine here again. Just a note the same menu appears to be available at the bar next door, as well as delicious pizza. read more

Food served both burnt and cold. People served one at a time. Took from 30 min to over an hour and a half for each person to individually get their food instead of all at once. This wouldn't even have been a good buffet experience. If I could give 0 stars I would, but the platforms won't let me. read more

Oh boy. What a mess. It took literal HOURS to dine here. I don't want to say anything bad about people just trying to get by but there were workers there so old and clearly disabled that I felt really bad for them, and it also resulted in absolutely horrible and slow service. They should put some of the whippersnappers behind the front desk to work in the dining room and let the old folks hang behind the desk. While staying at Canaan valley resort and conference center, visited the Hickory dining room four times, twice for breakfast and twice for dinner. On all occasions, the food and dining experience was on point. For breakfast, ordered omelette and granola-fruit platter. Got pancakes as well, it was fluffy and cooked fresh. Service was exceptional. Dining area is clean and offers great vista views. There is a lounge that is connected to the dining room and opens at 5 pm and serves drinks and dinner. We are several times during our visit to Canaan Valley, twice for breakfast and once for dinner. It was just plain convenient for breakfast, given that it was a short walk from our room and the restaurants in town were packed. The servers here were very pleasant and accommodating, although I know that their jobs are a little harder these days with COVID. One morning we ordered off the menu (ample portions) and one day we have the buffet. Each of us left stuffed and happy. Dinner here originally was not in our plan for the evening but when restaurants in town were closing early and our plans for the day ran late, this is where ended up. I am glad that we did. It was a nice meal but the highlight was our server, Gina, who made us feel very welcome and special despite a very busy evening for her. The world needs more people (and servers) like Gina. One additional note about the dining room itself. It's a nice large room (good for COVID times) with a bank of windows looking out over the back of the property towards the mountains. In the mornings, this was especially nice with the fig hanging over the hills and drifting down into the valley. Go here and check it out. I hope that Gina is your server, too! read more

OK food in general (we had 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts here during our stay), so-so service (slow, inattentive, and they got our order wrong), but good food if you go for their special on Friday night (lobster and filet mignon; but it's $34, a bit high for such a 2-star resort). Breakfast (buffet style) was very simple, not much to choose from. Nothing fancy. No eggs made to order. read more

We stayed at the resort Thursday night of this past week and stopped by the Hickory Dining room for dessert. We waited over 10 minutes as the hostess and 2 waitresses walked past us multiple times ignoring us. Finally, after that time we asked the host to seat us and she replied "in a moment, ma'am". We asked to sit at one of the many free tables by the windows, and the host told us they were all dirty and we couldn't sit there. I pointed out a table that had wrapped silverware on it and asked if that one was clean. She replied a curt "yes." After that she had a word with our server, who was at least more polite than the hostess but took her sweet time with the service. (We waited at least 15 minutes for her to pick up our card.) The next morning we had breakfast there; the host this time was much nicer and friendly. Waiter was clearly new, but nice enough. Overall the food was mediocre. read more

Great views, attractive but showing its age room. Food was entirely forgettable. Salmon was cooked to the point of being dry....salmon, really?! BBQ ribs were about what you'd expect from a home grill using Kingsford charcoal. read more
