Wings were good. I ordered a hand-tossed pizza with pepperoni, Italian sausage and mushrooms. Crust was a nice golden brown but it was somehow both dry and doughy. No flavor. Tasted like blah. Maybe I should have ordered the thin crust? Not sure. I know people like this place but I didn't specifically ask what they enjoyed. I may have ordered the wrong crust? The Italian sausage was good, mushrooms seemed old and the pepperoni was barely warm. Service was minimal. Order at the counter pickup your own food. Restaurant was kinda dingy. Stayed overnight in Pendleton on a trip and was hungry for pizza. Big John's did not disappoint. The crust was so soft and flavorful, the sauce was perfect and the toppings were fresh with just the right amount of cheese. We also had the cheesy bread sticks...wow!!! As a past resident of Pendleton- now a PDXer, I'm extremely disappointed in todays service. My grandparents come on a regular basis and today I was excited however it seems that the normal staff that usually works wasn't here. We were "un" greeted by the youth that work here & upon ordering things seemed like an inconvenience- which was clear with the head tilt and eye-roll! If you don't want to work with people- then leave because you set a terrible example for future customer service reps in a pizza joint where you serve families/kiddos. The pizza was good but the lack of customer service really makes a difference in returning customers. Correct smells, flavors and visuals. Obviously is a town fav, good pizza place vibe. Thin crust had a good flavor, the half and half pizza (Big Johns/Hawaiian) was good, one of the better ones we've had. Less expensive than I was anticipating, but more crowded than I had thought it would be, there was a game, so perhaps there were contributing factors. Cheesy bread sticks were good, marinara had a home made texture and taste, nice presentation. Food came out hot, in a reasonable time, all in all a great little pizza place, considering I haven't been in it since the mid 70s. Good place for a family dinner. read more

Took a few bites of all for 55$ complained about the food and got a sorry... will not be coming back ever even if i was paid to go. I travel through this area a couple times a year. Have tried twice, first visit the pizza was below what I had expected since they make the crust in house. Today gave them a second chance. The pizza was under cooked. Took it back to the staff and gave them a chance to correct it by cooking longer. It was brought back to the table still under cooked. Perhaps this place was thought to be "good" at one time, but I can assure you if you are expecting a quality product for your money spent you would be wise to pass on this one. We were in town this past weekend visiting family. Pizza was on the menu for dinner and Big John's was recommended. We ordered their Taco Pizza (Bean sauce, seasoned beef and three cheeses, finished with crushed Doritos, crisp lettuce and ripe tomatoes), The Buckaroo Pizza (Canadian bacon, tomatoes, beef and three cheese blend) and an order of chicken wings. It was specifically requested the BBQ sauce for the wings to be "on the side" not drenched over said wings. We were given a 25 minute pick up time. Interesting enough they did not ask for a name to go with the order. We arrived in about 30 minutes and our order was ready. However they had to look through the pick up orders for our order without a name. It was there and we paid. The container with the wings was closed and it was specifically asked if the sauce request, on the side, was inside of it. We were told yes. Upon returning to the house we discovered the wings had the sauce drenched over them, not on the side. This would not have been a big deal, but one of us in the group could not medically eat the sauce (thus wanting it on the side). The wings were okay for those of us who were eating them, although the BBQ sauce was much too sweet for me to enjoy them thoroughly. The Taco Pizza was actually loaded and very tasty, but my recommendation for anyone ordering it is to plan on using a knife & fork as it was quite messy. The Buckaroo Pizza was so-so. I did have a slice, but did not gravitate towards it after that one slice; I chose to stick to the Taco Pizza to get my fill. Overall it was just okay (3 stars). Next time we visit and pizza is on the menu I will try a different restaurant, unless I am out-voted. read more

Looking for a dinner spot in Pendleton & happened across Big Johns. Excellent signage on each end of the block to catch passing traffic. So you walk i n& go straight to the order counter. Didn't know this. Instead we went to a table & sat down & waited awhile. Noticing no waitresses at all we went up to the counter & found out we were supposed to order there. Anyhoo, we ordered the Taco pizza because we had just been talking about Godfathers wonderful Taco pizza from back in the day. This was not wonderful. Huge mess is what it was. Classic pizza and salad bar, been a couple times as a out of town worker, the setup reminds me of the old pizza parlor days.

Stopped in for their lunch buffet last Friday. The price was reasonable . The restaurant had plenty of parking and the décor was customary for a pizza joint. We were greeted by a beautiful friendly young woman who took our order. The pizza was pretty average but was expected for a buffet. They did not have a whole lot of choices. It seemed that the same four pizzas kept coming out. A better selection would have been great. The pizzas were fresh and the dough was thin and crispy. I really liked them. Excellent. I've been up on Vancouver Island in a small village for the past 6 months and was unable to find good pizza within 100 miles. Well Big John's cured my craving. The hand tossed was one of the best I've had. And I grew up outside Philly were there's a few pizza joints to say the least. The toppings were excellent as well. I did a half Hawaiian and half special. The ham was like good Canadian bacon and the sausage had lots of fennel which is how it should be. So I'm off to AZ in the morning for the winter and will be hard pressed to find an equal. Well done big John read more

Not bad pizza but it could be a lot better. They need to work on their crust it seemed a little familiar like someone worked for Abby's Pizza and stole their idea but didn't get the whole recipe. But in my opinion the new conveyor belt ovens they're crap the only way to make a good pizza was in the deck ovens where you can get that crisp crust. Cut your meat smaller it just seems like you're eating a pizza sandwich nothing gets really cooked on there it's undercooked. read more

What a poorly run and managed place. We do not live here and we gave it a try based on reviews. Here are the shortcomings: Walked in and not one employee sent a greeting our way. The floors are filthy and the tables in disarray. One of the wait staff walked past us at the door and yelled for us to order from the window. WTF! The pizza was just barely OK. Not great, not even good. The sauce was spread with huge pockets of sauce and lots of places with sparse sauce. The tea is watered down and the salad bar, well all I can say is walk past it. During dinner it was a stream of boys talking to the girls that were supposed to working and us getting to hear why they never call that certain boy. Not one person checked on our table. And when we left, well not even a simple "Thanks for coming" Avoid this place unless you attend the local high school and your friend works here. read more

Better than any chain but nothing amazing. The pizza was good, but nothing stood out. The crust was thin and brittle but not in a bad way. It held the pizza until it entered my mouth and then it broke up into chunks quite easily. The sauce and topping just tasted like standard Sysco quality. There wasn't any topping cheese so all the toppings fell off the pizza once I took a bite. The menu lacked any creativity. Your pizza options are Pepperoni, Hawaiian, a combo with only olives and mushrooms for veggies and a taco pizza. Other than that, they feel you can create it your damn self... which I did :) Maybe the people of Pendleton are simple folk but i like to receive a little more from a restaurant than what i can buy frozen from Safeway. read more

I have been coming to this place for years and it is better than ever! If you'd been here in the past and were not impressed, you need to give it another chance. It must be the new ownership or something. I go to the Monday thru Friday buffet quite often, as well as order pizza to go. I'll start with the pizza. The hand-tossed crust is the way to go. It is seasoned with herbs and the crust is rubbed with oil. The sauce it not your ordinary pizza sauce.Was my Grandma back there making her "gravy"? It's a little sweet and very flavorful. The toppings are generous and above average. As much as I love the pizza, I love the salad bar as much or even more! It's alway's stocked with fresh delicious options. If you go for the lunch buffet, It has to be the best deal in town. You get all you-can-eat soup, salad bar and pizza for $5.99. There is usually 4 or 5 pizza's to choose from and if they need to make more, they'll ask you what you want them to make. I think that's awsome! Now on to the service. The staff is happy to be there. That says a lot. I've noticed at lunch, the same people have worked there for years. When I go, usually toward the end of lunch, they are slowing down. Everytime I've gone, someone is getting to take their well-deserved break and they sit down to the pizza. Now if that isn't a sign, then what is? After working there for years, they still enjoy the food! They now offer delivery. Not just delivery, but it comes to you in a cute, little Smart car. A friend sent me pictures of those cars in Europe many years ago. It's cute as a bugs ear, not to mention, very convenient. Be sure and get on their email, they send out offers frequently. I just love doing business with someone that is on top of their game. Did I mention, the place is clean as can be? Go there. You won't be disappointed! I guess I should mention, they have beer and wine, as well as video poker for those who play. It's a great place to go for a birthday party or after a sporting event. They also have a ton of t.v.'s everywhere to watch the games. Just so you don't think I'm somehow affiliated with Big John's, I better say something negative. This is a local pizza restaurant and they compete with several top brands. Their prices are a little higher than the other options. We opted for a "Mexican" pizza and a traditional pepperoni pizza. Both were taken to-go. The "Mexican" pizza is unique in that it has beans, lettuce, tomatoes, ground beef on it but the dough was very mushy and way under cooked. Also, the ground beef had not noticeable seasoning on it that resembled a "taco" version. The Pepperoni pizza was also under-cooked and very doughy. If you are looking for a pizza style that is not available at the major chains this might be a good option, but overall I found it less than ideal. read more

Always a hometown favorite. Best taco pizza by far, and my all time favorite is Big Johns Special. Only draw backs are too small of bathrooms, often dirty tables, and no gluten free crust as of yet. Beware a review by a "customer" named Kyle. He also gave an exceptionally negative review of Mac's , which is owned by the same businessman. Soooo good. I don't like pizza with red sauce but I will devour big johns hawaiian and cheese pizzas. The pineapple on the Hawaiian is nice and sweet and the cheese blend is so tasty and the ham on it tastes fresh and not very processed. They're very reasonably priced too. read more
