I've been back to the Big Kahuna 3 times total in the last 5 days. Since my son was home from college, we drove from Louisville to Lexington just to go to Big Kahuna. My mom and son enjoyed it overall. However, my son doesn't too much eat pork so he would've preferred if they had Chicken Katsu on the menu versus just Pork Katsu. I tried the Pork Katsu...it was good. The sauce was a little too salty for me but that might just be because I try to stay away from salt and sodium all together so when I have it, it's noticeable. I was torn between a 3 star rating and a 4 star rating on this visit. In my 3 visits in 5 days, there's been a different staff each time. Today, the hamburger patties for the Big Kahuna Burger and the Loco Moco was burnt. The overall dish doesn't taste good with burnt patties. I guess what I'm saying is the quality of the food seems to be inconsistent. Also, for those trying the Loco Moco, if you don't want your rice drowning in gravy, you may want to get the gravy on the side. I would still go back if I happen to be in Lexington. Excellent Hawaiian plate lunch at a reasonable price. Went 2 days in a row cuz I'm new in town. Very tasty and nice portions. Cool atmosphere especially the Samuel L Jackson painting on the wall from Pulp Fiction. They even have the Hawaiian fruit drinks that are common in Hawaii. Little tricky to find and driveway is a little odd my gps had me circle the block twice to get in. Other the that we got food to go but the restaurant seemed interesting like a house converted to a restaurant. Ordered online and food was ready when I got there staff was nice. Mahi mahi seasoning was a little spicy but good. The katsu chicken was really good and wish I had ordered more the a kid size. Big Kahuna does not disappoint! The staff is friendly, the decor is fun, and the food is good. There are two tables outside on their deck. One of my favorite foods is katsu so I love this place. There is a tiny parking lot so if you come during the lunch rush be prepared to find street parking. Ordering is easy; if you order a plate, don't be afraid to sub for different sides. I subbed the macaroni salad and one rice for a side of fries. Also, note they put sauce on everything. You can ask for sauce on the side or no sauce at all. I went with my family so we ordered a lot: Coconut Shrimp plate, Kalua Pork plate, two Katsu plates, and a Spam Musubi. My ohana (family) were up for the day for an event in Lexington. We always make an effort to seek out Hawaiian style food when we're away from our area, given our only option is our own homes or a food truck. There is parking immediately behind their building as well as a small lot a bit to the left on the other side of the building next to their restaurant. Upon walking up the decor is inviting and the staff is friendly. Whether eating in or out, your food is served in a to-go container. The staff does deliver it to you. The seating is fairly ample with bar stool height. Be mindful that anyone with limited ability to climb stairs as there did not appear to be an elevator. Thus, anyone with physical limitations may not be able to enjoy their experience between the stairs and the seating. Now, for the food. Of the four of us there, three of us grew up with island style food as a staple. With that in mind, our expectations are set high. The 4 star rating is attributed to the owner's spirit of Aloha and homage to the love of two commercialized Hawaiian BBQ chains. The food is ideal for the part of the country this store is located as it may appeal to the flavors and taste buds of this region. A few things to note for anyone who has never had Hawaiian style food: 1) We traditionally do not put any type of sriracha aioli over our rice. Gravy is more common, katsu sauce or shoyu (soy sauce) with furikake. 2) Teriyaki chicken is usually served bone-in with the sweetness of the brown sugar and the bite of garlic 3) The eggs on the Loco moco were perfect. Just note that gravy is traditionally over the egg. Hand made patties are better than a hamburger patty because they are easier to break and mix well into the rice The menu listed Hawaiian fries. Although the description sounds delightful, these are not considered traditional. Hawaiian style fries is covered in the same type gravy that may be found over katsu or loco moco. These notes are designed to offer constructive criticism without discouraging anyone to try them out. I'd be willing to try them again to try other menu items and considering options for Hawaiian BBQ is limited in the Kentuckiana area this is a good option for anyone with a hankering that lives in the area. The homage is appreciated with an 'A' for effort. It is in hopes this restaurant becomes a staple in the Lexington area and a desire for their menu to evolve towards the traditional styles. read more

This was my first time trying this and it was AMAZING! The food was delicious me and my boyfriend came for valentines. We got the juicer (mahi mahi sandwich) and the teriyaki chicken sandwich both with a fried egg. We also got the fries and sticky rice. Everything was absolutely delicious. You walk up and order and they bring it to you and you throw your own stuff away so easy. The place itself is super cute. The walls are all decorated and the upstairs is such a cute little place. The Katus (fried pork)is my favorite. This time substituted the macaroni salad for extra sticky rice ! If you like sticky rice, you will love this place. No other place can hold a candle to Big K! The Spam Musubi is legit. I had never had Spam until going to this restaurant. It's a thin slice of grilled spam with sticky rice, rolled in a seaweed wrap!!! Finding Hawaiian food is like finding a needle in a haystack. But what an amazing needle it is! This place doesn't look like much from the outside - you have to walk up a flight of stairs to get in. 3 stars due to the friendly faces. Unfortunately, the food fell short for me. I'm in town for a couple days and I'm always down to try things I can't find at home. That's where this place comes to mind. The kicker is I've been to Hawaii a few times, so take my review with a grain of salt, if you must. Driving up, I would thought they were closed. The "open" sign was not on and there were no cars in the tiny parking lot in front. I ended up calling them to find out because Yelp and Google had them open. Thankfully, that was correct. There's a sign that says to park in the back, so I did. Walked in with my little girl and the staff was just very inviting, greeting the both of us. The cashier even gave her a lei! I ordered the kalua pork plate and spam musubi... again, the food just fell short. Musubi was ok. Pork was dry, even with the spicy sauce they provided on the side.
