Our first adventure here at Heirloom. We love coming to Midway! The Main Street is a charmer. Plenty to shop, eat, and drink here for sure! Heirloom did not disappoint! The atmosphere is super cozy and we felt welcomed from our first steps in. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and we met Michaela who took fabulous care of us for the evening! We settled in to a couple of their specialty cocktails (midwinters night dream and cardamaro manhattans - yummy I'll say) and the Brussel Sprout starter. Let me say to come hungry because the portions are large but yummy. The sprouts are a meal all by themselves! But there's more! I had the porcini rubbed filet and Teresa had the cabbage confit. Both portions were sizable and while I know she loved her cabbage, I was in heaven with a perfectly prepared filet that just melted in my mouth. Plus the asparagus spears and the Okinawa sweet potato mash were perfect accompaniment! Sadly, there was so much goodness we ended up bringing some home and we'll have to come back for dessert and another menu sampling. We found Heirloom on Yelp and were excited to give it a try, but the experience ended up being just average. I ordered the burger without the bun or fries, and it was so overly salty that I struggled to finish it. My wife had the CACIO de PEPE, which tasted quite different from what we're used to, and the pasta was overcooked for our liking. My brother-in-law ordered the fish tacos, which were easily the standout dish at the table. My sister's chicken cesar salad was decent but nothing particularly memorable. The restaurant itself feels a bit unexpected for a rural setting, which may help explain its strong ratings. For me, though, it's not a place I'd go out of my way to visit again--more of a "fine if someone else suggests it" kind of spot. read more

A cute little restaurant at Midway downtown! Food is little pricey, so be aware of it! I made a reservation just in case and i am glad i did, because this place was popping on A Saturday night. We got spinach salad as a starter. Mussels as appetizer. It was enough mussels to split between 4 people. The rolls and their butter were also good. We got 3 entrees. Fried chicken was one of the best fried chicken i have ever had in my life. Trio del mar was interesting. The scallops were really good. My least favorite was the french duck based dish, but I am sure that's just individual preferences. My only complaint was the service and they were understaffed. If they had a little but faster service, the night would have been even better! read more

I have been here twice since I gave the one star review nine years ago and I need to update it. The food is very good. I got the Sea Bass, which was excellent but I don't care for the sauce that much. My wife had the Fried Chicken which is truly amazing. I will get the fried chicken next time. We went in with high expectations, but sadly this restaurant was a big let down. The heirloom chicken was so salty my husband couldn't eat more than a few bites. I ordered the snow crab cavatelli, but it had no flavor. I would have added salt and pepper but there was none at the table. The service was not great- my waitress brought my pasta bowl, and her long acrylic nail dug into the food and I watched it flick food up. I made eye contact with her, so I think she knew what happened, but she did not offer to bring a clean meal. The food and service and overall vibes were a letdown, so I would not recommend. read more

Met with friends for Christmas lunch. Had the fish & chips --- 3 beautiful pieces of crispy fish with perfect fries. Came with malt. Vinegar, tartar sauce and sliced pickles. Stopped in for lunch and really enjoyed Heirloom Restaurant. It was our first visit and did not disappoint. Ingredients were local and fresh and the service was attentive. Husband and I split the Kentucky Cobb Salad and an order of Fish & Chips. Fish came with a side of malt vinegar--nice touch! Surprised such a small town like Midway has a number of great chef/owner run restaurants. Ouita Michel has two locations in Midway as well. We travel to Lexington several times a year--stopping in Midway to pick up flour from Weisenberger Mill. Will make Heirloom a regular stop as well. read more

We came to Kentucky to visit family and friends, and we had the best lunch at Heirloom. The Deviled Eggs with Bourbon Bacon Jam and the Flatbreads we ordered were exceptional. Been here so many times and the still as good as the first time. The menu changes seasonally which keeps it fresh. Today we had the Summer Panzanella, Tuna Tartare and Chicken Mushroom Soup. Heirloom hits it out of the park again; still not missing a beat for almost two decades! Wednesday's 1/2 price bottles of wine enticed a friend and I in and we had the best experience. Seated immediately with water, menu, and soon fresh warm bread; service was professional and impeccable yet relaxed and inviting when answering questions and making suggestions. Listened well too! I made an offhand remark about the evening special of the house made pasta's protein seemed an off combo to me, moments later we were presented with complimentary generous samples of the dish and it was delicious, pasta was perfect, light sauce with a bit of heat was just right for the tomato, sausage and fried chicken--I was wrong they flowed well together. Red snapper was perfect; fresh and seasoned lightly on lemon risotto and French green beans with a surprising portion of lobster on top. Scallop and pork belly (again an unusual paring for me) appetizer was plentiful and delicious and the proteins complemented each other nicely. Side of Asparagus was seared to perfection, and the large stems were fresh and tender and easily two portions. Desserts were delicious as well. Chef Wombles has curated a fine, knowledgeable, dedicated staff that runs with a pleasant, relaxed efficiency. Absolutely phenomenal restaurant! Small intimate setting, great atmosphere, amazing staff, and INSANELY GOOD FOOD! I had the shrimp and grits (have a great flavor and spice but ARE NOT SPICY - Perfection), mussels were killer (and I've never eaten mussels but would eat them every day from here), bread with the bourbon spread - chefs kiss , Hibiscus-Basil Lemonade - left me without words! Headed here for a last minute Friday night dinner. Booked the reservation one day before with no problem. Short drive from Lexington. Pros: great atmosphere, quaint, small town, outdoor seating. The beet salad was great. The appetizer special with hoecakes and quail eggs was great. Cons: the sauces were a little off. The soup was too thick and a little congealed. The food was excellent, the portion size was great. We left full but not too full. The bread was really good. The service was good. Our waitress did a great job keeping up with refills and checking in on us. They box your leftovers for you which is a nice touch. The ambiance was good, the interior was decorated well and it was a nice space. The only TV in the restaurant was playing a Bob Ross video which was fun. I was driving through town and needed to grab some lunch. What a great find! I had the crabcake sandwich and fries. The crabcake sandwich was fantastic. It was breaded, but not deep-fried. I'm not sure exactly what they did to it. But it was delicious! The slaw on top was perfect consistency and the bun was grilled to perfection. Oh, and the fries! Cooked to perfection as well. For the fiancé's birthday, we headed out to Midway to revisit Heirloom Restaurant. Heirloom is a cozy, modern restaurant for French-inspired fine dining, with a large wine list & outdoor seating. We both tried the Man O" War, made with four roses bourbon, Cointreau, sweet vermouth, fresh lemon, and lemon wedge. The sweet vermouth and orange of the Cointreau start you off, then the bourbon with a lemon finish to the drink. I tried the Seasonal Soup: potato, lemon crème, and caviar. The soup is very thin, but the potato flavor is excellent. The lemon creme is bland and very much in the background, while the caviar is very slightly on the back end. We had a Charcuterie Board for our starter. This came with Manchego cheese, House Beer Cheese, French Brie, Country Ham, Local Jam, and Olives Crostini. The crustini had a nice crunch; the beer cheese had good flavor, and Manchego was mild with a light salt bite with notes of parmesan. The olives are plump and juicy with a good brine, the country ham is nice but a little chewy, the brie is creamy, and the jam is a red pepper jam with a great sweet to heat. The pecans have a light sweetness but are not candied. My fiancé tried the Berkshire Pork Chop. A 16oz bone-in chop with smashed potatoes, sauteed Brussels, and an apple cider reduction. The pork is cooked to a proper medium but could use some salt. The Brussels had a good char and flavor, and the potatoes were seasoned and cooked well. The cider reduction is fantastic and sweet, with a good apple flavor. I had the Seared Duck Breast with sweet potato hash, stewed kale, and duck jus. The sweet potato is rustic and cooked well. The stewed kale was impressive; they look and eat like greens, even with salted pork in it, the onions are cooked down well, and there is a little heat to them. The duck was juicy; the outside sear was slightly over, but it could use more seasoning. The duck jus is okay, but it is almost cold, cooling down the entire dish and taking away from the whole meal. Heirloom has a small menu that changes with the season. The service was good but a little slow to start. The Fat Man says that Heirloom Restaurant is Fat Man Approved with 1 chin. read more

Went to Keenland racetrack yesterday and Heirloom for dinner with friends after. We absolutely loved it! Butternut squash soup was a delicious starter and then fried chicken for all. I've eaten at Heirloom several times but hadn't been in years. I was somewhat disappointed in my experience this evening but it wouldn't keep me from going back. For starters, they had only one Cabernet by the glass. The bread was delicious, sliced French bread and soft rolls with sea salt that were similar to a pretzel. I think they would be better with some caramelized onion added, but that's just my opinion. They served the bread with just a couple of molds of butter and a small container of something dark brown that I hoped was balsamic vinegar with a little olive oil and my friend thought it was fig jam. It tasted somewhat like Henry Bain sauce, which I thought was a strange accompaniment for bread. I couldn't decide between two small plates, the scallops and the chicken livers, and so I got them both. It was way too much food. The scallops came with a thick sauce that was slightly sweet and very rich. The plate also contained capers, purple cauliflower, and several small pieces of chewy pork belly. The sauce really overpowered the delicate flavor of the scallops and there was just too much going on with the other flavors and textures. The scallops were large and perfectly cooked and should have been the star of the show with a simple beurre blanc. The chicken livers were also perfectly cooked but the lemon sauce was way too strong and tangy. I much prefer the peppercorn sauce that Rodney's in Georgetown uses with their chicken livers appetizer. Our server was friendly and very helpful with suggestions when asked. The restaurant was quite full by the time we ordered and our food was slow being prepared but came to the table fresh and hot. From our reservation time until we left, we were there almost three hours. Some of that was our fault for talking instead of ordering immediately. The atmosphere is nice for a small, cozy place. The menu, which we were told had just changed, had enough interesting choices that made for a tough decision. The prices were as expected for an upscale restaurant. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, but just be aware when you go that the sauces are rich and very flavorful. Two small plates are too much for one person for dinner, especially with as much bread as I ate while waiting for my meal to be served. read more

After an exciting day at Keeneland I was looking forward to a nice, relaxing meal with my parents and it was anything but. There was a table of 6 seated smack in the middle of the restaurant with the loudest most annoying woman who was literally screaming and carrying on with crass, obnoxious stories that completely ruined the entire experience. The service and food wasn't as good as it could have been (scant butter with the bread, some of which was stale; garlic bread placed on a meal plate requested without garlic; mashed potatoes cold), but some of that might have been overlooked if we weren't so annoyed. No coffee, no dessert, no additional cocktails. I made a comment to the waitress (which she agreed), who knows if anything was done. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. read more

Wow... As a local Foodie, I cannot believe I have lived so close to this place and hadn't checked it out before! This was truly the first place where I ordered multiple dishes and loved each one as much as the previous! We were splurging this night. I can't remember what we were celebrating, because whatever it was, paled in comparison to the Chicken Livers! Oh my goodness. Best chicken livers in the state! You know you're eating something fantastic when the waiter passes by and says "Make sure you really get it in the sauce before you take a bite!" He was right, the lemon cream sauce really made the flavor explode with this! In brief: -Salad with beets/pears: perfectly light and delicious -Chicken Livers: my new obsession, very unique presentation over ricotta ravioli and nice lemon cream sauce Crab Cake: DELICIOUS! One of my first that wasn't overwhelmingly crackers or binders... very much crab was the star of the dish! -The Halibut Small Plate- one of my favorites also! Beautiful, intimate atmosphere that is perfect for a date (dim, cozy lighting, nice design etc.) Not sure if this will be fixed soon but at least right now, if you go expect to spend a fair amount of time because only a few extremely hard-working ladies are running the whole front-of-house by themselves, taking orders, mixing drinks at the bar etc. Some of the food I had here was absolutely five-star outstanding: the duck breast, for example, was flavorful, tender, juicy, and overall memorably great. (The napa slaw it came with was also good; I wasn't as big of a fan of the black rice as it was sort of gloppy and full of unnecessary seasoning. Honestly, I think my perfect way to have enjoyed the duck might have involved asking for more slaw and no rice. Or just the duck over some greens.) Another stand-out perfect menu item to go with the perfect duck was the chicken livers appetizer (which other reviews have mentioned.) It is STELLAR. My late stepmother had an expression in restaurants like this, that something was so good you could "swallow your tongue", and that came to mind when I was eating that appetizer. It's not just chicken livers, it's also homemade ravioli. So basically everything on that plate was perfect. The "endive" salad confused me because basically they took two little Belgian endive leaves and added them to an ordinary spring mix salad. In addition, it was supposed to be served with beets but I had maybe three little chunks of beet while my friend, who ordered the same salad, had a beet mountain on her plate. None of this is a big deal, it just seemed kind of inconsistent. I ordered a bourbon drink because "when in Rome" etc., but it was mostly a bit stronger than I prefer. I think that's pretty normal for bourbon cocktails, and we discovered over the course of my trip that it IS possible for those of us with fruity-drinks palates to enjoy bourbon if it's more watered down and mixed with sweet. That's just not a default option the way it is for rum drinks. The free pretzel bread was a nice touch. Definitely worth checking out overall, if you're okay with waiting some time. read more
