I normally cut my own hair because I hate going to babershops and to be honest...I am cheap. Went to Big Kat's on the reccomendation of a good friend and got what I thought was a good haircut. When I returned to work that Monday the compliments were flowing. I was hit on my multiple people, my tinder app went crazy, and went on a date. I owe Aaron from Big Kat's the world, but I can't afford that so I will just give him my repeated business. Due to an unforeseen dapperness emergency, I was looking high and low for a GOOD barbershop who can handle the texture of my long beard. I only had two days before my vacation and exhausted many possibilities when I say hey Yelper, search Yelp (duh). I looked at the reviews and the photos seemed a bit polished so I head over to the -oogle and read some more reviews. Now, as I am searching I did not see any photos of patrons of the highly melinated hue (This matters due to texture of certain hair types because some barbers just don't know/had the opportunity to style these beards, just barber facts, no slight against anyone.) I look at the reviews and the pictures again and I am digging the vibe Big Kat's Barbershop is giving off so I took a chance. Parking on the street is scarce so get your walk on. It is bright outside, I open the door and it takes a minute for my eyes to adjust. The barbers in the shop look at me, I look at them (it seems like slow motion, but in reality it was probably like 8 sec). As my eyes are still adjusting, I hear a voice asking if I need a beard and haircut? I look and notice is was a barber with a long beard in the first chair as you enter the shop. In my head, I am like Aww, heck naw (if you know, you know)!! I give him a quick once over and see how manicured and healthy his beard is so I am like if he can maintain that on a personal level then he has the skills to tackle this wild, beast of a beard I have been growing for 6 months. He listened to exactly what and how I wanted my beard to look when finished. Before we, began, he asked who cut my beard last because they jacked it up (previous barber tried to layer and fade the sides of a curly beard with out straighten it out). We had a laugh and the artist began to work. I had to have a couple hot towel treatments, steamer comb and moisturizer before my beard was manageable. By the end, I jumped out of the chair with a clean head shave, fresh styled beard ready to take on the world and vacay in style. I must feed my cats too much, because I have a bunch of Big Kat's, and that's me being diplomatic about it. Owned by the same people that own the Kat's Meow next door which is one of the best colour salons in the whole country - let alone the area. This is a typical awesome barber shop that specializes in all sorts, but often caters to large beards and hipsters and all of the current trends. I redownloaded this app so I could write this review. The cover photo for the movie Home Alone is exactly my reaction when the barber spun me around when the haircut was "finished". I got my most recent haircut 2-3 weeks prior so my last hair cut could be AT LEAST roughly noticeable. I told him not to cut the top too much, he even said himself, "half an inch" I said ok. He proceeds to completely ruin my right side, the line I asked for isn't even a line it's like a thin wedge cut with a 1/16, the fade I SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR BALD. He doesn't even give me a fade. There's a patch of hair sticking out he didn't even bother to cut. The left side isn't even cut straight upwards. I swear at some point of the haircut he just gave up and told himself I'll give this guy a free haircut. This is the worst haircut I have ever seen, received and I caution you to stay away. read more

Third time going was not the charm. I wanted to go some where that would take walk in's because I have a busy schedule. The first time I went I had a decent beard trim, that is all I wanted. I went the next week but he was busy, the next barber was TERRIBLE!! How on earth did I walk out of that establishment with out seeing all spots he missed. It seems that we both forgot our glasses that day. I decided I wanted to give them one more chance and went for another beard trim. Again, the guy I went to see was not there so I saw a third barber. So disappointed... I had to come home and finish what that "barber" started. I truly didn't want to bother to ask him to correct issues that I saw because I just wanted to get the heck out of that place. I could have done a better job at home than what I got done here. It was 100% opposite from what I experienced the first time. When I walked in the owner said hi to me but from then on I was completely ignored for about 10 minutes. I can let that slide since it "looked" like they were all busy. As people got done with their customers though no one asked if I had been helped which kind of annoyed me. I was participating in Movember so I was trying to get a good beard trim and then keep that up easily for the entire month. Seemed like the guy who was shaving me was doing a good job but since I was laying on my back and not looking in the mirror I couldn't tell. When he go done and showed me one side was completely crooked! I was so mad I just paid the money and left and had to cut off the bottom half of my precious mustache when I got home and wait for it to grow back out. I'm pretty sure he overcharged me as well. Last time I went the other guy who shaved me only charged 15 bucks which was fine, this time $25!!! Then the guy asked me if I wanted to give him a tip. That was not cool. I recently came to visit the barbershop in recommendation of a friend. Specifically I was advised to purchase Sauvecito pomade from the shop because they have it in stock. The shop was packed that day and I asked if they had the pomade in stock. I was told to grab one and go to the black door to purchase the product. I mistakenly thought I heard "go upstairs to the black door". ' I then was asked by one of the barbers if I just wanted to buy the pomade or was I here for a haircut too? I heard one of the barbers furthest in the back loudly proclaim, "DIDN'T I TELL HIM TO GO THROUGH THE BLACK DOOR?!" I apologized saying I was a bit confused and it was my fault. With that I was stared pretty hard by the two barbers out back with a smug look on their faces before I went next door to the salon to purchase the pomade. My overall feeling, I really like the barbershop's design inside. There was a good number of people waiting to get their haircut. The location is really nice, Midtown/Montorse area. The biggest thing for me for why I rated low, there was this tough guy attitude response which almost came off as very sarcastic from whoever barber said it. I did not appreciate it but also the look I was given by those two specific barbers. It was unprofessional. I had a chance to visit another barbershop around the sixth ward to purchase a specific pomade which also had Sauvecito but chose to purchase at Big Kat's. It's a bright Saturday morning and the air is cooler than it's been in months and people take notice with their car windows. As always there's a tented line snaking its way from the doors of the Breakfast Klub as the smell of fried chicken and sweet crispy bread permeate the nosebuds of soon-to-be brunchers and interested passers-by. Today the restaurant is registering people to vote. With kids going crazy in the obligatory bouncy castle it makes for a lively scene. The smell of greasy food makes my empty stomach whisper into a growl as I continue to hunt for that elusive street parking spot. I take another pass around the block. A tour bus is nestling curbside into approximately three and a half car lengths of public street parking. Hungry and irritated, I make two more laps before finding a parking garage that's free and no longer invisible to my eyes. The shop is small. Small enough to swing a dead rat by the tail and hit almost everyone in the joint.Two old church benches are backed up against the front window and a small row of chairs line the wall. They look like what I imagine to be salvaged from the world's smallest adult movie theater. Another porno row is situated near the rear entrance. Vintage decks placed away from nostalgia's reach stare "lovingly downward" and old skate stickers and concert fliers that seem to be arranged according to some "unknowable golden ratio" decorate the walls. It's a weekend morning at the barbershop while me and the dudes hurry up and wait our turn. Days like this you have to sign in, which isn't apparent at first. The barber with the chair closest to the door (Let's call him "B", because barber, right?) is sheep dogging a few dazed newcomers toward the chalkboard. The trio look familiar. I recognize them from the tour bus. Probably all night travel having just finished playing a show, they're looking a bit rough. "Hey, it's going to be at least thirty minutes," B says to them. "So maybe go grab some tacos. Okay? Thanks guys," I consider going to Double Trouble, maybe looking at records for a little while. But my gut will have none of it. Soon I'm in tow with the road-weary troubadours and we walk to eat. Leaving the restaurant with delicious tacos consumed in record time, I overhear the trio mention the luck and convenience of getting good food and haircuts so close together. Maybe even a combat nap before the show. Sinner seating is crowded so I'm back on my church bench with some time to spare for quality social network checks. "2 on the sides and 3 on top please." The barber and I chat some which is unusual because I tend to slip into that mental space of relaxed barber chair meditation-eyes open. We live in the same 'hood so it's restaurants and the changes in real estate renting and I forget to ask if he knows who's playing the Continental tonight. Big Kat's Barbershop (Ronnie was my barber, if I am getting his name right) just gave me one of the best cuts of my life. I have wavy hair that I like to slick back. I walked in, showed Ronnie a pic of what I wanted, and he got the job DONE. Additionally, along the way asked if I wanted certain things done a certain way, like getting the back rounded or tapered (I chose tapered) and if I wanted to keep my sideburns (absolutely keep the chops). He took his time, paid attention to detail, and ended it with a straight razor shave along the back of my neck. Note, this place is walk-ins only, and the barbers are not subject to a strict cutting window, so you might wait a bit if you don't get there early. Legend has it the wait times are like 3 hours on Saturdays, but I can see why. These guys take their time and do a good job. Just left this spot without actually getting a haircut. Waiting in line was fine, though there were a few guys ahead of me, things were moving along; haircuts in the past have been fine, but not absolutely mind blowing. What made me leave today? Attitude. Had a long week and was looking forward to getting a decent haircut for the weekend. Thought I'd found a place that respected my business and me, but clearly have not. I will be taking my decidedly unappreciated business elsewhere. After about a half hour of some sort of skreechy death metal music (generally tolerable on the other two occasions I've been, particularly bad today), the barbers were commenting on the music and, after a lull, I chimed in with a polite, "Any way we could change it?" The guy closest to the front shot back immediately with, "No. Would we walk into your work and ask you to change the music?" I responded that the music hadn't ever been this bad before and he just doubled down and basically left it to me to deal with it or leave. So I left. I deal with enough people on a day to day basis that give enough attitude in one way or another that going to get a haircut should at a minimum be a tolerable experience and -- at this kind of place that could offer a friendly smile and a supposedly expert hand, a spectacular experience. To the guy who asked me if I'd change the music if you came into my workplace: if I was playing music that pissed off a client or a patron in my office, I would gladly change it. From the moment I walked into Big Kat's, I knew I've found a gem. This is an old school/21st century barber shop and the guys working the clippers are the real deal. You go here and you'll get what you're supposed to get from a barber: a swift yet meticulous cut from true craftsmen and just enough conversation to make you respect barbershops as the place where Everyman is a philosopher/comedian. There was a bit of a wait on Saturday morning but honestly, that's a good thing. Lots of guys waiting for a cut is a great sign - they're here for a reason. Watching Jerrod and Bart work while I waited gave me a chance to respect their skills and formulate an opinion. This place seemed like a good, old school barbershop. I read great reviews and figured I could trust Big Kat's. This ended up being a spot that 1) was all about the cheesy decorations on the walls and 2) being "punk rock". It took almost an hour for me to even get a cut. When my name was called out i had realized I got the owner. I got excited thinking "the owner has to be good at what he does. This is ginna be a good cut." Instead I had to ask this guy to shape up the cut 3 different times. He STILL managed to mess it up and left a chunk of hair on my head where the fade was supposed to be. Long story short. This place is NOT a barbershop....it's a Hot Topic. I went to Joe Lee's immediately after to have someone clean up the shitty haircut Big Kat's left me with. I am grateful that they know what they are doing. Big Kat's owner does not know what he is doing. Maybe some of his barbers are good but my experience was terrible. Also when I asked for a taper he said "that was what brothers called it" which offended me. I'm over it. I will never recommend Kat's to anyone. Executive Summary: Amazing. A man's haircut. When you're done you'll want to go Fedora shopping and wish you were driving a '68 Chrysler. I've been looking for a place to get a George Clooney-type haircut (so I can look just like George Clooney-uh huh), mainly because it's a look I admire--clean, self-assured, classic. I've had zero luck until I've found this place. Truly an old-school shop. Joe cuts my hair. Nice guy, chatty only if you want that sort of thing, and knows his stuff. I particularly love the neck shave--traditional salons just don't offer this kind of service and it's refreshing. You don't make an appointment here; you show up and wait your turn--just like the old days. The guys take their time and people look great when they leave. So be prepared to wait. I bring my iPad and take care of my emails while I'm waiting. The clientele is of the hipster sort, but I feel right at home in my office gear. It's definitely a great place and now my go-to shop. There are certain things, that are easily defined, which every gentleman needs at all times; a specific drink order, a two-piece suit, and a barber. Truthfully, it has taken quite some time for me to find a barbershop that fit the bill as "up-to-par" for my generic idea of what a haircut for a man should look like and one that my wife wouldn't scoff at for the few weeks it is in that growing phase. Once I found the gentleman at Big Kat's Barbershop I haven't looked back. Located square in the middle of the up-and-coming market area in-between Travis St. and Main St., Big Kat's is a breath of fresh air for the cliche haircut franchises that seem to plague much of America. I must take this time to admit that I was a sucker for the "Visible Changes" of the world; you know what I'm talking about, the franchise that charges you $30-50 for a haircut, from someone straight out of training, surrounded by business men flirting with the hair stylist while you become hypnotized by the facade of mirrors in every crevice as the most terrible music drones over the loudspeakers. Those shops are one of the many signs of someone who just throws up their hands and screams "I give up"....until someone recommends Big Kat's. My first experience with Big Kat's was across the street at The Continental Club when I met Big E at his Tiki Bar outside. He handed me a business card for his shop across the street and told me to stop by sometime and see what a curve ball looked like in the form of a haircut; I was skeptical, to be honest. The first walk in the door is somewhat intimidating for a newcomer as you're greeted by barbers Bart, Jarrod, Joe, and Big E (in that order from the door) with their usual "Hey man, welcome to the shop." You look around and notice that, yes, there is a line and, yes, this is not your father's barbershop. The walls are adorned with Rat Fink memorabilia, promotional stickers for local businesses and artists, and a whole lot of early 20s and 30s music posters. There's usually a few things that go through your head in those first moments: 1. I should get the hell out of here and hope they didn't notice me. 2. These guys won't want to cut my hair. 3. It seems like everybody in this place knows each other; I'm out of my element. 4. Wait, is that an old-time shave with a straight razor? 5. That's weird...the barber is actually communicating with his customer. 6. Oh man, it's apparent that the barber doesn't care how long the line is; he is taking his time on that cut. 7. I guess I could wait it out and see. In that moment, Big Kat's has you and there's no turning back. Sure, you could walk out and wait for the line to calm down (usually right when they open at 10AM or later in the afternoon) but the aura and appeal of having your hair cut by someone who understands their craft, makes you trust you've got the best cut for your money and actually talks to you like a human about topics not having to do with their boyfriend drama or what the Kardashian's are doing is going to bring you back time-and-time again. When I lived downtown I would get a cut every two weeks to keep up the length I usually go with. After moving to The Woodlands for work I've had to plan my time accordingly...however, there is no barber in the Greater Houston area that I would trust my cut with other than Bart, Jarrod or Joe (I have yet to be cut by Big E so I cannot comment on his style, honestly, but he does serve up a great drink at his Tiki Bar and has always been cordial in conversation). I know I'm just one customer among hundreds that regulars their establishment but, Houston, trust me when I say that although they may never remember your name, the style of cut you get each time, or when your birthday is, these guys do care, and go to great lengths, to ensure you walk away satisfied with your hair. I implore you, your significant other implores you, your friends implore you...sit down and wait while you revel in the calm that overcomes you from breaking away from the chains of franchise America and the experience of what a real haircut can do to your self-esteem. You can't teach an old dog new tricks but you sure as hell can teach the new dogs old tricks...and they will take those tricks and put their flare on it. read more

I've been looking for a barber since my friend, who has cut my hair for years, has become less reliable and my need for fresh cuts has become more reliable. After running into the situation where i needed a cut late in the day on a Friday/Saturday (twice as a matter of fact) and not being able to find anyone I went to Yelp in a move of desperation. The first time resulted in complete failure, as I was too late to get in anywhere, but I did notice the listing for Kat's. I like hair cuts, I like tattoos. It only makes sense right? In fact, I'm surprised this isn't a more common combination. The second time I was in the right place with just enough time so I made a move. This joint is in a little section of neartown or downtown, I'm not sure what to call it, that I kind of like. Not the douchey environment that is becoming all too common, but more like the Westheimer/Montrose area. So I walk into a cozy room and am instantly engaged in conversation with one of the 2 barbers. Not the "Hi, we'll be right with you." type of convo, but the real kind of convo where you go back and forth for a couple minutes to get to know who you're dealing with (as he was cutting hair I might add). Now it was fairly obvious that I was a little out of my element. This was more of a rocker type joint with vintage posters of classic hairstyles. I'm a fade and edge up kind of guy. Fortunately, the barber who greeted me took the time to find out what I wanted and suggested that I use the other barber because that was more his thing. So on to "the edge up guy". From what I was told by someone who accompanied me this guy had a Houston Press award for best barber. I didn't see it but that's what I was told. I was pretty nervous because this tatted up punk rocker just didn't look to me like the kind of guy who would be nice on the fade. Then it occurred to me that you cut a lot of different types of hair in prison. Now I'm not saying that he's definitely been to prison, or that having been to prison means you are a bad person, all I am saying is that is what I found comfort in. So the tatted up, punk rock, convict barber asked what I wanted. The first time I use a barber I usually just give loose guidelines so that I can see where he/she is at and to use as a baseline if I decide to come back. He said he understood what I wanted and went to work; and I mean work. This was probably the fastest haircut I've had in many, many, years. To give you an idea; I showed up after 4, probably 4:15, and was gone at 4:30. No big deal? What if I told you there was someone in front of me? What if I told you that the cut was superb? What if I told you that I got a straight razor edge up with some warm shaving cream? What if I told you that you could receive this type of service for only $15? Well I'm telling you all that. Maybe I'm getting old and am becoming totally uncool, but I wasn't impressed. It's not a bad haircut, but it's overpriced, tacky, obnoxious, and you'll wait a long time. The barbers look more like they belong in prison than a barbershop thanks to all their tats & piercings, they reek like cigarette smoke and they seem to think they're the most awesome people in the world. The place isn't that bad, but you can faintly smell smoke in the air, in between the crappy metal music being pumped it. Finally if there's a line (typically full of ridiculous looking hipsters), you'll be waiting a long time on their uncomfortable benches. If you're a hipster though, this may be just the place for you to sit down in your skinny jeans, ironic glasses, vintage shirt, PBR on your breath and have your lack of personal hygiene not noticed. read more

They said they have a full house, BUT if I showed up at 4:30 PM they would be able to fit me in. They SPECIFICALLY said they wouldn't "kick me out". Well, you know where this is going. I show up, and "Sorry, we got a full house. Bye." Why even bother to tell me to go? I even showed up EARLY, like 4:25! Just save us both the trouble and tell me you can't fit me in! Point is, don't call to ask about the line or if they can fit you in. Feels like shooting dice if you go after 3:00 PM. I liked my haircut enough the first time, but this experience really turned me off. I was really hoping to find a trusted barber I could go to regularly. Looks like this place isn't it. **Update** OK, went back and had to wait a pretty long time again, about 2 hours or so. BUT, I really really like my haircut. And the guys are pretty cool. Also, I must mention that Big Kat's and Kat's Meow are separately owned businesses that happen to share the phone at times. I called Kat's Meow and whoever answered told me they wouldn't "kick me out". Then when I got there, the guys at Big Kat's told me they couldn't fit me in. There was an obvious mis-communication. I complained to Kat's Meow and they did offer a complimentary haircut, so kudos to them for trying to satisfy a dissatisfied customer. read more
