Walked in on a Friday morning just before midday and sat right down. Arthur took care of my cut, did a pre-consult and then executed wonderfully. Great haircuts from great people. Arturo is the one to ask for if you want the most meticulous fade ever. Worth the wait if you're after that--he doesn't rush. Robert, the owner, tends to have a line waiting as well and will do a great, no-nonsense men's clipper cut in no time flat. Christina does more varied techniques and is my personal favorite. She does scissor cuts that tame my sometimes unruly hair better than any other haircut I've had. The other barbers also have given me perfectly good haircuts as well over the years. read more

I arrived and they were short staffed which is no big deal, after waiting for 30 minutes a chair opened up and after showing the barber what I wanted he immediately told me he can't do curly hair. So after waiting another 20 minutes I finally got a seat and asked for what I wanted. Unfortunately I did not get that at all. I asked to leave the top a little longer (my hair used to go to my chin) and now it barely touches my forehead. Also I asked for a fade and I did not get that at all. I have come here for a very long time since I was in highschool, but this is the worst haircut I have ever had. read more

Feel like I was just in a wrestling match with my barber. Extremely brusk and rough. Not the pleasant experience here that I am used to. Find a barber you like and stick with them even when another greets you at the door with 'come right this way'! Update: I have found Richard and am sticking with him! I've always been getting haircuts from asian hair stylists (because they understand asian hair the most), but while I was in Houston, it was hard to find both a relatively inexpensive one and a good one. I asked my friends and they told me to go the times barbershop and ask for Robert. The haircut was honestly okay, Robert was a really nice guy and explained everything. The problem was that he used his razor for everything, and wasn't able to get the haircut I want without actually using scissors. He shaves you and uses compressed air to blow away small hairs that get really annoying, and the haircut's pretty cheap too. I myself will probably invest in a little more money and get an asian hairstylist, but if you just need a cheap place to get a haircut, this is the place for you. read more

I went to this Barber Shop needing a haircut. FYI, they prefer cash and don't like when you pay with card. I've been here before and was very satisfied. This time, however, I was seated on the far-front & far-right spot. The barber seemed excessively forceful throughout the haircut, used blades that were somewhat painful, sprayed stuff towards my eyes without warning, and overall made it a decently uncomfortable experience. Now I hate to be a wuss so I didn't complain on the spot, but all of a sudden one of my friends mentioned that there are scratches all over the back of my head. Turns out I wasn't being a wuss and that the barber was actually, intentionally or not, making it hurt. Definitely not going back here anytime soon and I very much don't recommend it. read more

I went here on a Friday morning, as I've heard it gets very crowded on the weekends and during workweek lunch hours. I only had to wait for one person before me. The haircut was definitely better, and the lady cutting my hair was much more thorough, than what I've grown used to going to supercuts forever. And for the same price. I will be back when it's time for another cut. Supercuts doesn't shave your neck, or use powder, or use compressed air to get rid of the small hairs that hide and make your back/neck itch the rest of the day. Definitely a great value at Times Barber Shop. I paid with cash since that's what I saw everyone before me doing, but on the door it says they take credit cards. Edit 4/17/2014: Having now been to Times Barber Shop a few times, it's definitely hit or miss. I've had a couple good cuts and 1 or 2 mediocre cuts. I'd still rather come here than supercuts but it's hit or miss (unless you want to wait for Robert, in which case be prepared to wait in line; he's the best). read more

I admit to being more than a little biased as I am a second-generation customer of Times Barber Shop since early childhood. This is a no-frills, full-service, old-school barber shop. There are two rows of chairs and a spartan waiting area with magazines. The barbers and hairdressers are cheerful and diligent. If you need a haircut and shampoo, Times Barber Shop is a good choice. They have been cutting my hair since I was a baby (I started coming before I can remember (so I guess around 2 or 3 years old)!) back when I used to sit on phone books. As I have grown older and moved around the country I am always happy to come home to Times Barber Shop. They have maintained a first-rate operation and provide excellent, five-star service for fair prices. A place to get a good haircut from a barber (not a "stylist"), read a magazine while you wait, get a shoe shine if you want, visit with some agreeable barbers and patrons about the news of the day, and all at prices that seem to have kept pace with reality rather than with inflation. If this sounds appealing to you, you owe it to yourself to find Times Barber Shop. The name is a holdover from the days when this decades old establishment was located at various sites in the Rice Village (one of them on Times Blvd.) before rising rents drove them to their current location in a small strip center at the corner of Highway 59 (southbound service road) at Shepherd Drive. No matter where they've been located, through the years, literally generations of Houstonians have been expertly trimmed by Robert and his team of barbers, and I agree wholeheartedly with Adam L's review: this is a place you get exactly what you request; be specific about how you want your hair cut, and they'll do their level best (and their best is very very good) to give it to you. It's one of the reasons that virtually everyone you see there is "a regular" and has been for years. Prices have gone up to between $13 and $16, depending on what you have done, but that's a small price to pay to sit in an honest-to-Opie barber shop, its walls festooned with a pennant from every college that every patron over the years ever attended, and get a fast, efficient shave and a haircut. And yes, a shave can be had, if you want to relive that luxury from long ago. I've been coming here for the last 4 years to get my hair cut. The place is definitely vintage barbershop with university pennants on the wall and an "honor code" soda/snack shack. No appointment necessary, but if you do make an appointment make one with Robert (older gentleman right by the front door). He has cut my hair several times and it was excellent. That being said, I have had great experiences with several of the other barbers as well. Cost is $16/adult, $14/student which includes haircut as well as a neck and behind the ear trim with a straight-edge razor and shaving cream. Parking is out front in the private lot. It can get crowded on Fridays and weekends so I tend to come on Tuesday/Wednesday. There is also a shoe-shine service in-house although I don't own any shoes worthy of being shined so I've never tried it. Clientele tends to run on the older side and somehow that just makes me feel better about the place. I can't say that this is the absolute best haircut in Houston, but the price is great and I've rarely been disappointed with the outcome. read more

This review is for balance. I cut my hair myself, been doing so for years. When however, I have an important event to attend and want to look extra sharp, I go to Times Barber Shop and ask for Arthur...the "overweight Latino guy in his late 20s" a previous 1-star review referred to. This guy does magic to my hair. Whenever I look at myself in the mirror, I almost want to giggle and skip, I mean, I'd TOTALLY do me. The way he carves my freaking hairline is like voodoo. First time he cut my hair, I was like must be a fluke, second time I was like "Dare I get my hopes up?". Third time? I got his freaking card...that's how good I think he is. I went here this morning after having moved to the Upper Kirby area and needed a place to get my hair cut. I went only because of the Yelp reviews. I would rate this place as so-so. First of all, they do NOT accept credit cards. I repeat: they do NOT accept credit cards, which led to an embarrassing situation when I was done with the cut. I had to drive to a nearby ATM machine and get cash before returning. The Yelp statement that they accept credit cards is false. Second, I got a basic cut, which was adequate except that my sideburns were uneven at the end. I decided just to correct this myself when I got home. Third, it was $16 for the cut. I had expected it to be less based on the reviews at Yelp. I now wonder if the reviews are outdated for this place. read more

Robert is a good old fashioned barber who has been cutting hair for decades. When I got there, there was one person waiting on Robert. When I was getting my hair cut, 5 people were in line. The hair cut was what I asked for. Standard business men's haircut, parted on left, tapered in the back. After some hair cutting and conversation, it's what I got. $16 is the current price FYI. Whole story: I just moved to Houston and I work downtown and got an awful haircut in the tunnels for my first haircut since living here (same guy used to cut my hair since I was a kid and knew exactly what I like). Went to Times today and got Jeff who did my hair exactly how my old barber from home used to do it with minimal direction (given to me by old barber). All their staff was friendly and fairly talkative but not overly gabby or painful to talk to. Price was $16 which I thought was fair for what I got. I used to pay $17 so I was pretty pleased. My roommate and I went at the same time (midday Saturday) and we both got in chairs right away. They had 8 people working so there wasn't really ever a wait for anyone that came in (unless you were looking for a particular. My recommendation: Ask for Jeff The one downside: They only take cash - which I should have expected from a kind of old school barber shop. However, when we walked in, we told them we didn't have cash on us and they told us we could run to the ATM afterwards. I asked for completely different hairstyles for both of them and Times Barber Shop did a great job doing both on a 4, and 5 year old which certainly isn't the easiest thing to do. You don't make an appointment, you walk in which was exactly what I needed to do. This is officially my new barber shop after my old one closed. There's lots of chairs, but Christina has cut my hair each time. Nothing fancy (it is a *barber shop*, not some foo-foo salon, after all), but it's a great cut at a great price. Seems like there's lots of regulars and caters to an older clientele, which are both good signs in my book. It unfortunately isn't open too late on weeknights, but is open on Saturdays, and due to the number of chairs, rarely seems like there's much of a wait. I'm easy to please when it comes to barbers, and this definitely fits the bill. Everyone's always friendly, and they recognized me the second time I walked in. For $16, you could do a heckuva lot worse, but I doubt you can do much better, especially in this part of town. read more

When I first moved to Houston, I knew I needed to find a barber. It took me three months, but I found it. Times is a more classic barber shop. They specialize in traditional men's haircuts. They even have an on sight shoe shine person. The haircuts are reasonably priced. The barbers are polite, well trained, and able to accommodate most hair types. Haircuts typically have a straight razor clean up of the side burns and neck at the end, and they'll even trim your eyebrows. It's an old school barber shop that is always relevant and provides an amazing service. I will continue to frequent them. read more

I got a simple women's haircut here and my hair was completely messed up by the end. I asked for 3 inches off and she ended up cutting 6 inches!!! Not only was the length horrible, but the back was completely uneven and the layers were not blended at all. She also spent 1.5 hours on this horrible cut, and refused to fix it when I asked her to because she had another customer waiting. I left my haircut feeling even worse about my hair than I did when I came in :( I would not recommend Times Barber Shop AT ALL for women's haircuts. read more

I must say I was skeptical after seeing the negative review, but we must have gone to different places with identical names as my experience was quite he opposite, Amazing! I called a few other shops tying to get a straight razor shave and the others stated they did not do it. I was a walk in at Times Shop and hey seated me immediately and went to work.
