Summertime flies were escaping inside uncontested, so I made a fly swatter out the core of the empty roll of paper towels. Some of the seats in the restaurant are rugged from excessive use. I imagined that's a good sign the food was great. Our server was fantastic, and she provided excellent service. The server addressed the elephant in the room and apologized for the flies and kept on working hard serving her section. It felt like she was the only one working, but she wasn't. The pepper shaker and the hot vinegar sauce were empty, so we grabbed them from another table. The Sunday ox tails and high ratings lured us to come here. The ox tails were good and savory but a little salty for our tastes. The sides were good and consisted of collard greens, yellow rice, candies sweet potatoes and baked macaroni and cheese. The piece of cornbread I had was okay but did not represent the rest of the meal. My husband ordered a side of wings to go. When he opened the to-go box I saw a small feather on the wing on the top of the pile and I plucked it. I started at five stars and ended up at two and half stars. I will definitely be back the next time I'm passing through Valdosta. A real gem. I tasted the collard green dip with tortilla chips (delish) and catfish nuggets for an appetizer. Those catfish nuggets were so good I ordered some to go as well. My entree was the shrimp and grits and those were so well seasoned with grilled shrimp. What a find! We were on our way back from the Smoky Mountains and made it to Valdosta and had to stop for something. My wife somehow found Big Nick's - a BBQ, Soul Food And Wings Mecca!! Gator Tail Po' Boy, Fried Chicken, chicken tenders - fries, dirty rice, coleslaw, Mac and cheese (Mama's Mac). There was very little talking when the food arrived. Wow! The soul rolls, come on, what's really going on. It was 40 minutes later I received my food, then 15 minutes later one more received their food. At least 20 more minutes passed and the rest of my group were still waiting on their food. They got and went and asked about it and they still didn't have it ready. Then I was still waiting on the rest of my order. I had to go get it myself. It would have been so much easier just to make a staggered menu letting people know what you were out of instead of having them continue to ask for stuff you didn't have. As a Valdosta native, who no longer lives in Georgia, I've always eaten predominately family-prepared meals and have never wanted to venture past that food because there's no need, but these collards, y'all. As with any good Deep Southern meal, you should be happy to eat an all-veggie meal to judge quality, and Mr. Nick did not disappoint! Okra: amazing, collards: amazing, cornbread: perfect, mac'n cheese: perfect as well...the chicken was EXCELLENT. Food gets an A. The staff is sticky sweet as expected (oh, and the sweet tea was certainly some of the best in town that doesn't come from your cousin's fridge): they checked on us repeatedly ensuring everything was to our liking. I loved the artwork found on the walls and table tops displaying a variety of musical icons, and I'll eat at any table celebrating the artistry of Biggie, and hip-hop GA greats, OutKast. There's love in this food and this place. It's wonderful to see Valdosta evolving and bringing the best kept foods in the country (IMO) from the family supper table and making it available to all that may be passing through and the local community. Our bartender, she was very personable and accommodating. Caleb at the register, this young man is going places. He didn't buckle under the pressure of a large crowd. He was courteous to all the customers ordering inside, those with call in orders picking up food (reviewing with the customer every order). Because they are very busy, the only suggestion is that there's a need for a person to keep the lobby and dine in area upkeep. I ordered the wing and shrimp basket. I ordered 5 lemon pepper twist and 5 ranch wings, all flats, extra crispy with a side of Momma's Mac and cheese. All of my food arrived cold, even the French fries that I didn't order. I requested the Mac and cheese that I initially ordered and guess what, it was also cold and bland. I need to let Momma borrow my Mac and cheese recipe. The wings were far from crispy, but the ranch wings were edible. The lemon pepper with a twist were terrible, I didn't eat any of them. The shrimp were really cold and extremely salty. The best thing on my plate was the ranch dipping sauce for the wings. My boyfriend ordered the pork chop dinner with yams and collard greens with cornbread. He liked the pork chops, I thought they had too much breading, but were seasoned well. All of his food was also cold with the exception of the pork chop. The yams were decent, about a 4 on a scale of 1-10. The greens were about a 5, but had the potentiality be a 6 if they would've been warm. Our check never came, so he went to the front after sitting and waiting for about 10 mins. Needless to say, we won't be returning. Although this was out of the restaurant's control, the party sitting next to us was on FaceTime with their volume all the way up carrying on an entire conversation while I ate my salty shrimp, undercooked wings, cold Mac and cheese and fries that I didn't order. The rug at the entry way may be the best thing about this place and it's not even in great condition. I took a picture of it so everyone can see because this is probably the highlight of restaurant. Based on the scores I expected so much more. The best thing that I can say about this place was that we had an amazing waitress, but even she could only do so much. This was the worst restaurant experience I have EVER had. We went here for a graduation dinner, only 7 in my party. We didn't receive our food until an hour after we ordered, and it was only one person's meal. The 2nd plate came about 20 min later, then the next 3 plates came about 15 min later, on two of those plates -pulled pork- the meat was cold. We never received the last. 2 plates, mind you we are 2 hours in. Patience had run thin so we cancelled the rest of the order, when we got out ticket we were charged a $10 cover charge. Manager said because we occupied the table for 2 hours & the live band was playing. She was informed we arrived at 7 pm and it was their fault that we stayed so long. You would have thought we would have gotten some kind of compensation, especially since we were there 2 hours and still didn't get all of our food.
