Sometimes a few social media posts are all it takes to convince you to hop in the car and make a…read moretrek to somewhere new! That's exactly how we ended up at Roadhog Willy's BBQ in Mount Vernon, Ohio--and I'm really glad we made the trip! We arrived around 2:30 p.m., right in that weird window between lunch and dinner. We met Justus, who was incredibly friendly and answered a ton of our questions while making some great recommendations. Since it was Thursday, it was Reuben Day. Now, I love rye bread and corned beef, but I'm not a fan of sauerkraut. Hopefully they don't take away my German card for admitting that! I asked if I could substitute brisket for the corned beef and coleslaw for the sauerkraut, and Justus checked with the manager. The answer? "No problem!" That kind of accommodation goes a long way. My wife went with the brisket sandwich, and we shared fresh-cut fries, mac and cheese, and a piece of cornbread. Let's talk about that brisket! WOW. It was absolutely amazing. So tender it practically melted in your mouth. The brisket is smoked on a huge smoker right out front by a 70-year-old pitmaster. I didn't catch his name, but that man definitely knows his way around a smoker! The flavor and tenderness were spot-on. The coleslaw was sweet with a nice vinegar kick--really well balanced. The fresh-cut fries came out hot, crispy and delicious. Definitely worth getting as a side. And then there was the cornbread. I had heard they had a unique twist on their cornbread, so of course we had to try a piece. It was super moist, buttery and just a little sweet. Honestly, I'm kicking myself for not ordering some to take home! For a smaller BBQ joint, Roadhog Willy's delivers BIG on flavor. And then there was the bar experience. We sat near the bar and met Shawn, the bartender, who was incredibly personable. He shared some of his mixology background, including experience at some notable restaurants around Columbus. He makes his own mixers and juices, and you can definitely taste the difference. We ordered a blackberry margarita, made with hand-muddled blackberries, house-made simple syrup and fresh lime. 10/10! That margarita was fresh, flavorful and perfectly balanced. It was one of those drinks where you immediately realize this isn't just a bartender pouring something from a bottle--they actually care about what they're making. Between the fantastic brisket, homemade sides, unique cornbread, craft cocktails and genuinely friendly staff, Roadhog Willy's really impressed us. If you're looking for a great BBQ spot where the people are friendly, the food is made with care and the flavors deliver, get yourself to Roadhog Willy's in Mount Vernon! This place is a hidden gem that deserves to be discovered. And yes...we'll definitely be making the trek back!

Drove an hour to get here for lunch after hearing great things about this place. Wow, so glad we…read moredid! Justis helped us by explaining the menu and answered all of our questions. She was super friendly and knowledgeable. I ended up with a brisket sandwich and my husband got the Rueben but he switched up the meat by choosing brisket and coleslaw instead of corned beef and kraut and he said it was amazing. We shared a few sides. We had the handcut fries which were made fresh and delicious. We had the Mac and cheese which was creamy and hot and we shared a slice of cornbread, yum! To top the meal off we had the made from scratch Blackberry Margarita and it was fantastic. The bartender is a transplant from the Columbus area and has spent many years in some finer dining establishments and it really shows. He is knowledgeable and very creative. You can tell he loves what he does. Overall this place is well worth the visit. Its a cute casual spot with great food and tasty drinks. The brisket was so flavorful and tender it just fell apart when they were preparing my sandwich. Run, don't walk to this place. Its a hidden gem in Mt. Vernon.

Perfect…read more And with places like this, you don't get the interminable, pretentious resume/lecture filled with all the "in," hip, food-trend buzzwords before you even look at the damn menu. "Yeah buddy, I really don't care if your iced tea is hand-crafted...whatever the hell that's supposed to mean." Anyhow.... The pulled pork samich was outstanding -so juicy it destroyed the bun - just the way it should. The hot sauce was mild but good and tangy. Didn't really need it though, the flavor of the meat was more than enough. Also the chicken wings. You know, you get heavily spiced and sauced wings and think, man I love this fat and skin, this salty and spicy- but you never really taste the chicken. No so here. Just spice rubbed, BBQ'd and ....they're chickeny! And meaty! Who'da thought!? Also loved the kickin beans. A unique taste I couldn't really put my finger on. Some hot pepper, little sour, some ground beef of all things- I don't know, but sure wolfed those down. Unique. Cole slaw was fine, the usual. Only bad thing were the sweet potato fries. I think they may have been made earlier and were re-heated because they were tough and chewy. Still.....I'll be back whenever I'm in town! A place not to be missed. Nice people too.

Brisket was really tasty. As were the beans. The Mac n cheese wasn't our favorite. But - overall…read morewould eat there again if in Zanesville.
