I was referred to Big Sky Anglers by the Worldmark West Yellowstone Resort to get information about local fishing spots and get a fishing license. Though they only sold fishing licenses for in the park, they were so helpful showing me on the map of local, out of the park, rivers and lakes, I could try. Also they were so helpful to tell me where I could get a Montana fishing licenses and bait to use. They informed me of a lot of rules I needed to know too. They were busy and I was impressed they took the time to help me out when they knew I wasn't going to buy anything there. I really appreciated their time and great customer service. Thank you. Best shop in town. Carries a wide range of gear and staffed by people who know how to use it. I joined them for a fly casting school that they ran for 4 days done in conjuction with a great caterer (Laurie) and the folks at the Golden Stone Inn, where we stayed. Our guides and instructors were excellent and we fished great water in three states (Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming) -- some of which was within Yellowstone Park. Many of the other anglers in the school were highly repeat customers (who have fished with and through Big Sky in Alaska and Argentina) who raved the shop and their guided trips. Probably the amazing thing I saw was a high degree of adaptability to the needs of the angler. Several of us had bad knees, backs, eyes, etc., and they did a great job listening to individual limitations, adapting the chosen water, and the assistance to get there accordingly. Literaly whether you're 8 or 80, these guys can get you on the water. Props to Justin for running a great school and to Chris and Matt with whom I fished the most. We met several/most of the partners during the school and the whole organization has right blend of serious fishing but chill attitude. Finally, big props to Simon who partnered with them on this school as lead instructor. I'd fish or take a class with anyone of them again, any time. read more

Stopped in Big Sky Anglers looking to purchase a fishing license, they only sell them for fishing in the park (Yellowstone) but suggested the gas station across the street. Lots of great gear in here. I inquired about a guide and price checked against another place we were going to hire since availability was very limited during the days we were in town. Purchased a Yellowstone trail map, a really nice rainbow trout (prior to catching them in person) sticker for my long board and we were on our way. read more

Me and a buddy decided to fish the Yellowstone area for a week. We booked trips with BSA and 2 other shops in West Yellowstone. The other 2 shops were great but had our best experience with BSA. Our guide Marshall, worked his butt off showing us the park and getting us into fish. BSA also includes the cost of the flies which wasn't the case with our other 2 trips. The guys in the shop were also very helpful in directing us to water on our non-guided days as well as a solid restaurant recommendation. read more

This was my first time fly fishing with a group of 16 gentlemen who have been fly fishing for several years +. After 3 days of fly fishing with Big Sky Anglers ( Guides Donavan, Jared, and Joe) I've felt comfortable enough and pumped to want to learn more about this sport. The guides taught me great techniques, each different then the next, and honed in to give each person the best individual experience no matter what skill level you were in . The trout were all unique in size, native, and wild which made fly fishing an absolute blast. I'm hoping to practice back home in the Midwest so when I join Big Sky Anglers in my next trip I can gain more from their expertise and challenge myself. Justin who co-found the place is such a cool spirit who made West Yellowstone feel like home, while giving us the absolute best experience from the moment we stepped foot into town, especially their newly open #GoldenStoneInn. The cabins are quaint, warm, and relaxing (especially after a long fun day of fly fishing). The staff at the Golden Stone Inn were super accommodating and just welcoming. I enjoyed chatting it up with the staff, and I believe they felt the same way. We had some excellent meals at the Golden Stone that was cooked to perfection and paired with some great wine, or local beer . (Side note)The lunch that was provided during the fly fishing guided trip also made my stomach happy, especially the cookie/brownie that was included in the bag. Every morning I would also wake up to a thermo of delicious hot coffee outside my door followed by a home style breakfast to provide the perfect amount of energy to get my day started. Stopped in and we just drooled over all the fly rods, me myself wanted the hot pink one but I not yet took up fly fishing, still just a trout fisher. But we did buy a couple of cool t- shirts and chatted about fishing even though they were busy gearing up for the up coming busy season. Went on an amazing float trip with our guide Joe who was fantastic. I was on vaction with one of my girlfriends and I and we decided we were somewhere between beginners and novices and wanted to try fly fishing. Joe was the perfect balance of patience and knowledge and before you knew it we were both catching brownies and rainbows! This place is great to go into. Good selection of gear and helpful with fly selection. Booked a float trip with a guide thru them and that was a bad experience. Older gent had to pull over 4-5 times to rest and pee. He talked non stop about himself, the shop and all the guides by first name as if we knew them. For each story he told he told it four times. I have gone on a lot of guided trips and this one was poor. read more

Rob was extremely helpful in helping us decide on flys and even gave our group very helpful impromptu how-to lesson on few different ways to rig nymphs that ended up paying off. Bud Lilly's was one of the many reasons I was drawn to West Yellowstone. I read Bud's many tales of fly fishing throughout the West Yellowstone and Madison drainage and dreamed of coming here one day. I finally did make the trip last summer and beelined for Bud Lilly's as soon as a arrived for flies and requisite information. I was not disappointed. The staff were incredibly friendly, knowledgable and enthusiastic. The fly selection was excellent. Plus they had all of the additional gear items I would need to fully outfit my adventure...including bear spray. I spent the next week fixated on that damn bear spray, expecting a monster grizzly to pop out of the next clump of brush....and could I get the safety off before I was scalped and fricaseed? This place is AMAZING! First of all, they have everything an angler could want or need. I could have spent A LOT of a money there! Secondly, the guys that work there are all friendly and knowledgeable. I'm a novice, and they did not make me feel like one. We were fortunate enough to go fishing with guides, and all of them -- Robert, Said, Jake, and Marshall -- were wonderful. My husband and I fished with Jake and he was fantastic! A really good teacher, full of knowledge, good fishing tips, helpful, and (perhaps most importantly) PATIENT! Nothing fazed him, even though I got my hook caught several times -- including in his hat! And, to top it off, I caught two fish. If you're coming to Yellowstone to do some fly fishing, be sure to stop in here. You won't regret it! read more

Mickey was an outstanding guide on our trip. Although my father and I had very little experience fly fishing, Mickey had us casting and catching fish in no time. Big Sky Anglers was exceptional from start to finish. The shop is well stocked with gear and knowledgeable staff. Our fly fishing trip was more than I imagined. Our guide, Nicole was patient and a true educator. She knows the rivers inside and out and she took the time to make sure we were really honing our skills. I drug my 14yo son along and he said it was the highlight of our trip through the West. If you've spent any time with a 14yo you know this is high praise indeed! Man! Where do I begin? As a out of owner I was staying in West Yellowstone for the first time on my way to moving to Maine. I just got into to fly fishing and needed to purchase some essentials to get started. I was warmly greeted by an employee (forgot to get his name). I explained to him my situation and he was eager to help me. The store only had one employee today so he really did a great job helping me and still attending to other customers. He walked me through some needed equipment, and gave me great info about the sport. I was a little overwhelmed when it came to selecting SE good "starter" flies but he saw I was getting a little nervous and assured me that staying with the classic will have me catching fish in any water! I really can't say enough how great this shop was. It had LOTS of great gear at affordable prices that anyone could work with. He (unnamed worker) invited me back out during the spring when he assured me I would be impressed with the amazing fisheries Montana has to offer!
