So, there's no doubt that catching a lot of fish makes for a great day on the water, so 6 out of 5 stars for that today for sure. But what made today so much fun was our guide. He was instructive (we learned Euro style today and it was FABULOUS), but also let us learn a bit on our own. He was kind and polite, but fun too. He clearly knew his fishing, his river and then some. Josh was easily in the top guides we've had fishing. The shop was also great. We've fished with them now 3 times this year, including once in the middle of winter and it was also great, and we've had great service. Easy to make reservations and easy to get information to make good decisions. Really appreciate all the questions answered and good advice about what to choose for a day on the water. Highly recommended all around. So many different rivers to choose from and many different guides, techniques and learning available - or if you just want to fish, these guys sure can give you the best head start on finding those coveted spots. I think we caught well over 40 fish on our trip - we honestly lost count after the first hole. Larry pulled out 5 in a row.... Wow. We were in Montana for a full week and kept trying to reschedule or fly fishing trip for a warmer day. They book usually at least 1-2 weeks in advance and so we were not able to change it from the coldest day of the week at 19 degrees and snow. Needless to say I was petrified as a native Floridian but this was the MOST amazing experience ever ! By the time you got all that gear on and got in the river you were fine. The customer service in general at the store is fabulous and on the existing they try to put only one guide per couple ! Wow what attention, education, entertainment, and assurance Ryan gave us. In my experience most places like this take forever in the shop to teach, waste time re teaching it on site then waste more time getting back to "unpack." Not these guys. Not One moment wasted. He continually changed our bobber and fly etc as well as changed locations when we were slow to catch. We caught 9 fish and had a blast. I would recommend paying these guys directly and not through a lodge or hotel Package like we did as we spent $50+ more even considering tip and tax. This was the highlight of our trip to Montana ! read more

My dad and I had a great day fishing with Casey from Gallatin last week. The way that Gallatin is set up is that they are an outfitter and they will book you with whatever guides have availability on the day you are interested. Casey was great and he said that Gallatin runs a pretty tight shop and all the guides are high quality. Casey met us promptly at the agreed time and place. We got to the fishing spot pretty quick and he worked hard all day to catch as many fish as possible. We caught maybe half a dozen rainbows and he put us on more fish but we missed some hook sets. All in all a terrific time and would absolutely fish again with Casey! read more

Even though we only caught one fish- our Gallatin River Guide trip was EPIC! Our guides, Bobby and Christy, were great! Our trip ended with a caught whitefish, a bald Eagle swooping in to snag a dead fish, and a total dip & ride down the Gallatin --- all caught in a 44 second video! Hilarious! read more

My mother and I visited Gallatin River Guides on our trip to Montana as part of a travel group. We were initially not excited for the fishing, as neither of us are big fisherman. I can now say that this was one of the absolute highlights of our trip! Zach was our guide, and took us to a beautiful spot down the river and along the mountain. I suspect it may be tough to guide us both, but Trey figured it out quickly! He loves this area and shares his passion and knowledge of the history. Trey finds fish! I booked a full day float trip for my dad and me for his 70th birthday and a half day trip for two 16 year olds. Mike took us to the Upper Madison and he was fantastic, making this a wonderful and memorable experience. My dad and I have fly fished a few other times with guides, but this was by far a more superior trip, particularly in terms of learning more about fly fishing. Mike offered great advice and gave really detailed and helpful information about the river, the various fish and Montana. He has amazing experience has a fly fisherman and hunter so he offered great perspective about the sport and the land. He was a patient teacher and a really amazing guide. Our 16 yos went with Kara on the Gallatin. They had various levels of experience--one an expert and one a novice. Kara was fantastic with both of them, making the novice a fan and the expert cherish the experience. These trips are an investment and a wonderful experience. There are lots of choices in guides here in the Bozeman/Big Sky area but Gallatin River Guides is worth your time and money. Maybe we weren't the right family for them. Two adults with our two Kids who are ten. The two guides rushed us, went along their business, not taking into account that this was our first time so we knew nothing. The guides were cranky, is all I can say. We wobbled on the rocks, slipping often, not casting correctly, and felt kinda like we were boring them. We didn't stay together as we were four: two people per guide. Still. There was no excitement, encouraging the kids with joy, happiness, "isn't this amazing" type of spirit. One of two guides spoke ill of the other behind their backs when we had separated. Odd. Our 8 year old son has attended the Thursday night FREE Fly Tying clinic with Jimmy during the winter months for two years. The guys totally welcomed him into the group and have been so supportive.
