One side of this quaint park has a playground, dog park and a large gazabo overlooking a pond. At the other end you'll find the office, showers, and laundry. Behind the necessities is a lovely walking path that runs along a creek; there's even a few little beaches for wadding. We were here a week, and from the park we easily saw four different waterfalls: Roaring Rivers Falls, Cummins Falls, Colditz Cove Falls were fairly local, great hiking and free! Ruby Falls was about $30 per adult and two hours away, but it well worth the drive! We also took a 90 minute drive to the edge of Nashville to see the Lane Motor Museum.

Yes. If you can handle a moderately difficult, yet short…read morehike...do this. Charit Creek Lodge (CCL) is located only a few hours away from Nashville in a section of Big South Fork. Via I-40, a couple of highways, and some gravel roads, park your vehicle in the trailhead lot and hike 1.1 miles down into the valley where CCL sits. (Note: There's a porta-potty in the trailhead parking lot. Bring toilet paper in case the park supplied roll is out, and hand sanitizer since there's not a sink.) Early in the descent, the set of "stairs" on the hiking trail are rather scary for dogs. I'm shocked how incredibly deceptive my photos are; these "stairs" are WAY more steep than they appear in the camera's eye. I'd call it a ladder, really. My dog (who is too squirmy and almost too big to carry) took a total leap of faith from the "stairs"...literally. I think my heart stopped. Thankfully, this did not end in injury. But I won't take him down those "stairs" again without a better plan in place. The bridge across the creek freaked him out a little since it sways when you walk on it, but nowhere near the danger those "stairs" were. I knew there would be a barricade at the entrance since they were only permitting overnight guests with reservations at that time due to the pandemic. The staff greeted us and gave a quick rundown of the layout, rules, and directed us to our cabin. CCL's layout is rather unique. In a nutshell, there are multiple buildings: one small building is the kitchen...kinda the heartbeat of the place. Directly across from the tiny kitchen is the largest building which houses two "attached" cabins available for rent, the dining hall, and the Manager's Quarters. Here you will also find the site's potable water and rocking chairs on a lovely wooden porch. If you're facing the kitchen, there are two buildings on the hill to the right that house the restrooms and the showers. I'll go into more detail about those later. As you walk past the stairs to the restrooms and showers, two detached cabins appear - both available for rent and can house many people. From there, turning your gaze slightly to your right, there is another small building called the "Corn Crib", which can house up to three people. Looking sharply to the left, waaaaay off in the distance, is the horse barn, which can house both people AND horses. Restrooms and Showers: Up two flights of stairs, you first come to the restrooms; one side for women and the other for men. The women's restrooms offer two sinks, two mirrors, and three stalls, each with a toilet and a curtain for privacy. Hand soap, paper towels, and toilet paper are all provided, so no need to bring your own. There are windows and a skylight for lighting during the day, but no lighting at night, so be sure to bring your own! There was also a bottle of bleach water and hand sanitizer on the counter for use too to make it a bit more safe during the pandemic. From the restrooms, there's a small stone path that leads up to the shower house: one side for women and the other for men. The women's showers offer two stalls. Each stall has a dressing area with a shower area connected to it. There are plenty of hooks and bars to hang bags, towels, etc. The water wasn't incredibly hot, but still warm and enjoyable -- definitely NOT cold. Be sure to bring your own soap and a towel. Like the restrooms, there is a window for natural light, but that's it. So be sure to shower during the day or take water resistant supplemental light! I'm running out of characters, so I'll end with the food. It was superb. Delicious. Fantastic. Plentiful. Far too much food to consume in one sitting. Go here if you're physically able. More than worth it.

Breakfast, dinner, and the packed lunches were absolutely delicious. Every meal tasted comforting, homemade, and full of flavor. We loved it so much that we bought the cookbook so we could bring a little bit of that magic home with us. One of the biggest highlights was Gregg and his staff! You can feel the heart in every corner of this place. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed, and it is clear that he and his staff have poured so much love, care, and pride into creating this experience. Their hospitality made our stay feel personal and incredibly special. Evenings were unforgettable. We ended each night around the fire, looking up to see every star in the sky and even the Milky Way stretching overhead. It was the kind of beauty that stays with you. Then we returned to our cozy cabins, warmed ourselves by the wood burning stoves, and settled in for the most peaceful sleep. The cabin was spotless, charming, and perfectly designed for rest. Between the hikes, views, the atmosphere, the incredible meals, and the sense of quiet, our stay felt truly restorative. My family and friends rented a 50' family boat and I was so impressed with how nice the boat was organized. The marina was clean and had everything we needed for a GREAT long weekend. The Marina is impressive with the bridge over top of it. Loading and unloading was efficient and there were plenty of heavy duty carts to get your gear moved. SUNSET Houseboat- 50 footer very comfortable for 4 couples! Generator was brand new and started very easily. Overall fantastic experience. Staff was really courteous and knowledgeable. When we did have an issue with our fridge, they came out immediately even though we were camped 15 miles away on the other side of the lake. They took care of us! A+++++ service.

Saturday, February 1, 2014…read more My husband and I decided to go hiking when we woke up this morning. I knew he enjoyed caves and we both enjoy seeing new places so I found this located about 2 hrs East of Nashville. So we were OFF... Filled up the tank in Nashville (needed gas anyway)..grabbed a 10 lb bag of $1 ice from McDonald's for cooler and grabbed a few bottles of water we keep in the van anyway..and we are off.. Directions: Take I-40 East from Nashville to Exit 287. Turn Left onto Rt 111 North heading towards Kentucky border. Once you enter the town of Livingston, TN, still following the Rt 111 North signs make a Left at the signal light. Stay on this route for about 10 miles, you will see the brown signs for the Cordell Hull Birthplace..make a Left onto Rt 325 beside the gas station. Go another 1 mile or so, Cordell Hull Birthplace and Visitors Center is located on the Right but the Bunkum Cave Trailhead parking lot is on the Left. You can park at either lot. The other lot has picnic tables and some grill with a bathroom in the Visitors Center. This has a few tables but NO GRILLS.. After visiting the Birthplace Cabin and Museum across the street, which is very nice and FREE also..we pulled across the street to the parking area for the Cave Trail. REMEMBER when HIKING: "Take only Pictures, Leave only Footprints, and Kill only Time" We locked the vehicle, grabbed my small cooler bag with water and flashlight and cell phone and off we went. There is an information board with park rules and hiking information about the distance of the trail. The entire loop to the cave and back is 2 1/2 miles. We started at 9 am and finished at 10:36..Not bad for two 50 something grandparents trying to stay fit and fab...checking off our bucket list...lol !!! So we started our hike into the woods. The ground was covered with leaves but still easily marked. The trail was easy to follow and very moderate..NO stairs or up and down hills at this point of the trail. You also cross a little bridge and walk along the waters bank. We are heading to the observation deck to overlook the cave...to get to this point there is a little uphill climbing but nothing major. If you have any limitations you will want to turn around from this point and follow the trail back to the parking lot. There is some great views of the cave entrance from here and if the creek was flowing, a nice waterfall in the right season. Tony and I decided to finish the hike and check out the cave below us, so UP we climbed..along the trail there are park benches furnished to sit if needed. At the top of the mountain you are directly above the cave. The trail branches here..To the Right you start the descent to the cave entrance, to the Left is the rest of the hiking trail back to the parking lot. We went RIGHT...down to the Cave we go !! At this point there are steps leading you down to the Cave entrance. This is the only wooden banisters to assist you down your trip. There is about 50 steep stairs to get to the entrance. The entrance to the cave opening you are allowed to enjoy and explore but it is illegal to enter into the cave itself without a special permit from the Park. The cave entrance was used for many things throughout history but one of the noted facts was Cordell Hull's father operated a Moonshine still from this point to support his family financially. The cave is over 100 feet wide in its opening the second largest cave opening in the state of Tennessee. A body of water flows out of the cave, it is very clear..not sure whether its a creek or a river by Tennessee standards but to me I would consider it a CREEK..(I am from WV)

The rooms are VERY clean, and have been renovated/are being renovated for this next season. A new restaurant/bar is in the works as well. I live close by and plan on being here as much as possible, even if I am not spending the night. I would highly recommend this resort/marina to friends. LOVE IT!!!

We were told by new management that they had got ridden of roaches and mold, but have been continuously disappointed! While staying over the fall, we witnessed first hand roaches coming out of walls and BLACK MOLD in the bathroom in the motels. Apparently they have a long-term resident staying in one of the motels that is the cause of the roach problem yet nothing has been done! I have seen where they are newly renovating the cabins and motels, yet they could care less about roaches and mold! You can try to make an appointment with management and voice concerns but when you show up at the agreed time, she is nowhere to be found! And the employees continued to make excuses for the manager and her absence. These people are money hungry and could care less about their long-term customers! Would not recommend to anyone looking for a nice, clean vacation.
