In Hilham, Tennessee, is Standing Stone State Forest (11K acres)- something I did not know existed. And in the middle of the forest is Standing Stone State Park, 1,000 acres which surrounds Kelly Lake. The park is two hours from Nashville. Apparently this area was named after a large boulder (a standing stone) that was in the area and acted as a border between Native lands. The boulder was eventually destroyed. The state of Tennessee acquired the land and opened the State Park in 1961. The park has a gift shop, a visitor's center, a scenic overlook, boating, picnic shelters, playgrounds, swimming, an amphitheater, fishing, 21 cabins, 4 group cabins, 36 campsites, and hiking trails- Cabin Spur Trail (.25 mile), Jordan Spur Trail (.3 mile), the Lake Trail (4.7 miles), and the Tea Room Trail (.15 mile). It also has something I've never seen before- these giant, huge display places for marble competitions with viewing bleachers. The park hosts a Spring Nature Rally every April, a National Marbles Championship in September, a Car Show every October, and a 5 mile run every November. read more

Such a pretty park and campground! We stayed for a night to get out of the rain and have a hot shower. The bathrooms are super clean, and heated in the winter!! That was such an amazing surprise to have hear and a warm shower! The campground was totally dead and quiet in December but the spots are spacious and seem like even when it's crowded it would feel big. We will definitely come back! read more

This was the year for camping out in my tent. Although this campsite didn't have designated tent sites, it was just fine camping out in the graveled RV camper area. The bonus was having electrical hook ups and water. It made camping in a tent more fun because I brought along LED lights and a radio. And the water was nice and cool. Site #15 is on the back side of the campground. It's about 100 yards from a clean bathroom with 2 showers. Garbage cans are scattered around the campground. And as a mother with two toddlers, we felt completely safe on the grounds. Part of our decision staying in the campground was being able to see the sites beforehand. Then we proceeded to the office and were greeted by the nice staff. They were very friendly, gave us literature, and told us how to book our site online. I was more than impressed with the cleanliness of the grounds, the cleanliness of the Olympic sized pool and separate kiddie pool, and that staying overnight got half off the pool admission. I have been coming to Standing Stone for at least one week a year almost my whole life. My family has been coming since the 50s. It's a wonderful family tradition. Overall, the natural attractions of the park are fantastic. Great trails, scenic views, the lake, the dam, the creeks - all well maintained. The park offers other great amenities, such as multiple playgrounds, picnic shelters, boat rentals, paddle boat rentals, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a recreation hall complete with corn hole, ping pong, and more. The swimming pool is really great - very clean and taken care of. The pool is for park guests and locals alike. Locals pay $4 and park guests pay $2. I wish the park would go back to when they didn't charge guests per day. It's an inconvenience, especially when you have a large group like we do, because you need your receipt to get the discount, and often the whole group doesn't want to go at the same time. Also, it's a deterrent for going later in the day, as you feel you aren't getting your money's worth. (I know the park needs all the money it can get - it would be easier if it was just included in a few extra dollars of cabin rental fee). Which brings me to the cabins.... Again, I've been staying here my whole life. I've probably stayed in every cabin at some point in time. So I'm used to them. I know what I'm getting into. But it would be very hard for me to bring someone new to the park - the cabins are just not up to par. They can be dirty when you check in - mainly just cobwebs, dust, leaves, debris, etc. There are bugs. There are mice. The beds aren't comfortable. The linens aren't either. Really its just a slight step up from camping. I wish I could give Standing Stone 5 stars - many of its features are 5 star quality. But the cabins need some TLC. read more

Scenery is a 5. Swimming pool is a 5. Staff and cleanliness a 5 but I am giving the campground a 3 because of power issues at the campsite. My low voltage protector has gone off multiple times per day in my camper. We even changed sites and did not correct issue. read more

I've been going to this park since I was a young girl so it has many good memories for me. However the cabins were filthy upon arrival. I had many family members in various cabins and mice poop was everywhere which was disgusting! The office staff were friendly but the pool life guards were not attentive! The area is so beautiful so having unfit cabins was a letdown for sure. The park service needs to contract a better cleaning company because the current one is NOT doing a good job!! Please clean them up so I can continue to make memories. If not we will find a better spot!! read more

Love Standing Stone! Its a nice place to take my daughter to. It has a couple different playgrounds, a big open field, boat rentals, cabins, shelters for a picnic, a dam with a creek to play in, fishing areas, hiking trails, pool with life guards, tennis court, basketball court, ect. Its really clean. The rangers are nice. The bathrooms are stocked and decently clean(can't help if nasty people use them all the time after they got cleaned). I recommend to anyone for a fun, scenic place to go to! read more

We wanted to take our kids (13, 10, and 2) to a fun family weekend in a state park close by. I read reviews on Google, and some were very negative about the cabins, staff, and experience. I was almost worried to come, but SO glad my husband said let's give it a try. The "modern cabin" (8a) is very clean and nice. Yes, you are in a state park, so bed linens and the kitchen appliances are probably not what you're used to at home, but still completely functional and clean. The staff at the park is AMAZING. The Park Ranger we met this morning was so kind and even took a snake they keep in an aquarium out so our kids could see it, offered to take us on hike (but did tell us it wouldn't be the best for our two year old and gave us other advice). We got all the ping pong and foosball and cornhole supplies free and could keep them as long as we liked to play in the rec center. Trails were very rocky and a little hard for little ones, but a really fun experience. We went back by the office to ask if we could have some duct tape to repair our volleyball. The maintenance worker actually drove to his office just for us, to get us what what we needed. EVERYONE here has gone above and beyond to make sure that we had a wonderful time. In addition, the gift store tshirts and jackets were very reasonably priced, which you usually don't find at a state park. We have REALLY enjoyed our special weekend here. Grill outs, beautiful scenery, awesome place for campfires, very nice cabin, fun sports and recreation. Highly recommend and will absolutely come back! read more

Over Labor weekend 2015 me and my Family Reunion which consisted of 75+ members have been renting the shelter and Cabins for 30+ yrs . This year was the worst we have been treated. Checked into the cabins had a 3 day rental, Many Family members including myself were shocked to find upon inspecting our Cabins at check in were poorly maintained Not Clean at all and just Moldy smelling , Case in Point one of the cabins that was rented has Molded French Fries in the oven yielding the oven unusable and Gross, Dirty Sheets, not enough towels supplied for the 3 day rental of the property. Upon discussing this issue with the office manager . was very rude about the deficiencies spoken about told us there was only so much towels and maintenance of property and nothing could be done or would be done. Upon leaving the said Conversation the park Ranger named Neil Weatherly Harassed all family members at each of the cabins that were rented out citing we were illegally parking "never was a problem in the past at our shelter" stopped one of the grandchildren for walking back to his cabin and issued him a warning for Jaywalking which again was never a problem in the past . Stopping at our shelter on Various occasions driving really slow which again has never been done before . We in all our 30+ yrs of having our Reunion have NEVER been so rudely harassed like this yr we together as a family pump in $3,000 to $4,000 on labor day weekend to visit this park . It Breaks my heart , but we will never be visiting this park again EVER ! We will go somewhere Else !! read more

it's a pretty little park but the ranger guy was so rude to me, that I will never go back. He parked behind my car, blocking me in, and harassed me about attempting to swim even though I never set foot in the water (!). I was just trying to enjoy the sunshine and read a book, but he became very belligerent when I argued with him and said I was next to the water and "it was obvious" I was about to go swimming. Too bad he's off his rocker and rude as heck, because it's a pretty little place and i used to be a big supporter of the state parks system. read more
