I frequently visit Kenosha, and Big Star--when they're open--is a necessary stop. 3 cheeseburgers, fries, and a root beer, and I'm a happy boy. Yes, it's a treat. Don't judge me! It's a classic drive-in experience, for better or worse. I'm not going to say it's exactly pleasant to sit in a hot car surrounded by other hot cars spewing exhaust, but it is what it is... I personally wouldn't mind a few additional tables scattered around instead of just the two. Service is prompt and they have a menu that, especially in today's economic climate, feels exceptionally priced, so much so that it encourages you to order a bevy of items just to try them out. We were visiting from out of town and friends took us to this iconic drive in restaurant. We were served quickly. Most of us ordered the double cheeseburgers and FF. Food came quickly and was hot. The burgers tasted good and the price was very inexpensive for what we ordered. The outside of the restaurant is well worn but this place has been here for a long time. Horrible, horrible food. No flavor at all. I had a burger, onion rings, and chocolate shake. The shake was sweet with no discernible chocolate flavor. The burger had no beefy flavor. And the onion rings, good god, all they were good for was wiping up ketchup. Crunchy with NO onion in them. Where all these great experiences there come from, I don't know. Blech! read more

Recently tried this place and had a good meal for a reasonable price. It's very retro looking and reminded me of places my parents would take me when I was a child, I had thr double cheeseburger with fries and a root beer and with tip was just $12 so pretty good deal and the burger was really tasty. Today we ordered cheeseburger, root beer, cheese curds and onion rings. Feedback is very important in the food industry to keep customers. The cheese burger and root beer was on point. Very good as usual. However the cheese curds and onion rings were very bad. We tried them but could not eat them. First time we had to do that. The onion rings were all the same size (never seen this before from any restaurant) and tasted pasty and doughy. It did not taste like onions. Been to Kenosha many times and only recently found this place. But now that we've found it we're definitely coming back! A true drive in, there's 2 rows of cars (but you probably want to line up in the closer row if there's room). We stopped in and directly in front of the line of cars was the menu. It was definitely more extensive than expected given the size of the place. Within a few minutes one of the wait staff came up to our window to take our order. Food came out pretty quickly despite there being a number of cars already there. Food was good, nothing amazing, but definitely worth it for the price (much more reasonable than other fast food places? And they have a good variety of sides and sandwiches. read more

Big Star Drive In was a cool experience. It gets pretty busy, and I can imagine so because of their cheap prices for food. You park in a space and wait for a server to come and take your order. We ordered double cheeseburgers, fries, cheese sticks, fried mushrooms, vanilla shakes, cheese curds, and rootbeer floats. It was a decent wait and we decided to eat there so they bring the food out on a try that balances on your window. Love the old school vibes. The cheeseburger and fries were delicious. The burger comes with grilled onions and it just adds a nice taste to it. The fries were good too, just your standard crinkle cut. I should have stuck to just that and it would have been great. The cheese curds had a weird taste and texture. The fried mushrooms were on the soggy side. The cheese sticks were the best out of the extras we ordered, but they were still just decent. This place was so simple but so yummy. The cheese burgers are the star of this drive up dinning experience. I ordered two double cheese burgers with everything on it. The grilled onions were a perfect addition on to the burger. The fries come in a big portion. We got the root beer floats with are made there, which was really tasty. Our server was really nice, she explained what they are known for. But beware them at you will need cash, because this is a cash only establishment. I'm not familiar with drive-ins but we saw this on the map and on Yelp and I wanted to give it a try. Also the prices were remarkably reasonable! We're talking about a 1/4 lb cheeseburger for less than $5! The family got food and sides and milkshakes... I think everyone was pretty pleased with the taste and quality. Since it was Friday, I got the fish fry and there were some generous portions. As I mentioned, I'm familiar with drive-ins, so I wasn't sure what to do when I pulled in to the parking lot. It took some time before a waiter came by so I wasn't sure if I was supposed to get out or flag someone down or whatever. I just kind of watched what everyone else was doing, but that still wasn't making it clear. I don't expect them to cater to tourists (like me), but maybe even the most basic signage could help an out-of-towner? I'll be better at it next time! read more

Friendly service and great food! We'd never been to a drive-in style restaurant before, so we weren't sure what to do at first. Apparently you park in one of the spots, and the server comes to your car to take your order. You can choose to get your order to go, or you can eat it there--in your car, parked in the lot. We watched as servers brought trays that clipped onto the windows of the cars. We ordered ours to go, so no tray--it was brought to us in bags, and drinks in a cardboard drink carrier. The server who brought out order to us came ready to make change--this is a cash-only place. The burgers are amazing! Our only issue with them was the meat kinda sliding around, but that seemed to be the result of generous toppings, so I certainly wouldn't complain about that! I was impressed that they got our order exactly right, since we had ordered several burgers, all with different toppings. Cheese fries came with a generous amount of cheese sauce for dipping. The chocolate milkshake didn't seem very chocolaty, but still a very good milkshake. The teenagers in our group weren't especially impressed with the drive-in style of the restaurant (probably just felt like a drive-thru to them, since they weren't the ones driving or ordering). It was a warm, sunny day. I took my dog on a road trip to a new dog park and after running and swimming at the park we found a drive-in with car hops! It was great to be able to keep my dog in the car with me while I ate. And, she was tickled when she got a cheese curd or two. The drive-in has been there since the 1940's. I loved the experience, the food and the lit neon at sunset. They make their own homemade root beer, I had a root beer float and it was superb! I also enjoyed the single cheeseburger, cheese curds and french fries. Everything was really delish! Word of advice: They were hella busy! It took me a bit of a wait to get a parking spot. Didn't get to try the food unfortunately but here's my experience with the service. Service: I randomly found this spot while exploring Kenosha. It's off in the cut and had a decent amount of traffic so I decided to give it a try. . I pulled in the spaces behind the main line of cars, not really sure what to do next as I've never been to a drive through. As I sat there I watched the servers walk to all the cars as people pulled in next to me, waiting for them to approach my car as they were doing the others... only to not have that happen.. They walked up to every other car around me and to cars that came in after me even after I'd be sitting there for a good 15Min... The aroma this place gave off smelled amazing and I had a little extra time to kill so I decided to wait a bit longer and see how long it would take for someone to come to my car... after 37min I was approached and told after placing my order that they are cash only which was not posted anywhere on the property and I didn't have on hand. So unfortunately I'd leave this place with If you decided to give this place a shot make sure you have cash on hand a little extra free time. I've been doing a tour of drive-ins and roadside burger stands the last couple of summers with my boyfriend, and, as of this writing, Big Star tops the list. The double cheeseburger was perfectly greasy and had perfectly melted and creamy American cheese. For me, the cheese can really take a cheap burger to the next level, and this is pretty much the ideal. The burgers also seemed to be hand-pattied with that slightly looser construction than the pre-made pucks you get via fast food. Additionally, the crinkle-cut fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and creamy in the middle. Basically, this was the kind of meal that you want to reorder the minute you finish, with only shame, a full belly, and consideration of a future heart attack stopping you. Their sign is super cool and they have carhop service throughout the parking lot. For service, turn on your headlights - this is how you can signal you need additional items or would like them to collect your tray. No signature root beer or ice cream concoctions here, but the killer food is enough to be a draw. Sadly, like many drive-ins, this is a seasonal spot that's only open half the year. I wish I'd gotten back again this summer, but it's definitely on my list to revisit next year! read more

A must see Kenosha classic! Whenever I get back to my hometown, I visit Big Star Drive In if it is in season. They are only open late Spring through early fall. And yes, you really do stay in your car and are served by carhops! The menu is much more extensive than it was decades ago. I got a burger and crinkle fries with a tasty root beer in a frosty glass mug but there is chicken, cheese curds, mushrooms, onion rings, ice cream and many more sandwich options. The burgers come with ketchup, mustard and grilled onions. You will have to ask for pickles if you want them, as they do not automatically offer them without a request. My carhop arrived at my window promptly with a bright smile. My sister and I placed our order and waited with excitement because we knew how good the food would be as it arrived on that little tray that hangs on your window. Don't forget - you pay when the food arrives, not when you are done eating. You can always count on hot food prepared correctly. Once finished, we start the car to signal to the carhop that we are ready to leave. Those girls are on top of their game because there are two rows of cars and no one is ever forgotten.
