I love me some dive bar- hole in the wall finds, hence my love for Yelp! Stopped in between baseball games. Reuben seem to be flying out the door. So a hot steaming Reuben is what I got! Stacked with corned beef, the sauerkraut wasn't as tart and pickled as I like. Light on the sauce which is perfect. But the poor grilled thin sliced break just could not hold up to the weight of the sandwich and my second 1/2 was wasted to soggy bread. Maybe try more If ever in the area

Wow the WORST service and food EVER. My husband was looking for a deli , he came across big stein read the intro they have on their page . Great service great portion a mom and pops place . Well we walk in someone in the back says will be with you in a minute. So we sat down at the table . Waited like 15min , my husband noticed someone at the register , so he asked do we order here or at the table ? He said nope here no waitresses here . That was fine with us . BUT he saw us sitting there with the menus they put on the tables ? Then when we placed the order he was very rude . I ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich. My husband ordered the pastrami sandwich before my husband can say another word he looked at him and said ok with WHAT and shook his head upset because he didn't tell him how he wanted it fast enough. My husband told him well I would like the special that you have on the menu. The food came out the worst microwaved meat ever no cheese or onion on my sandwich and no barley any cheese on my husband's sandwich. NEVER AGAIN .

Even though we live down the street, I haven't had a chance to eat here as every-time we crave it it's closed! 10/10 sandwiches! A little extra bread on the monster portion but beyond a bang for your buck!

The alleged suspect... I spent the next 24+ hours in absolute misery!  =(

Ugh! It pains me to write this. I have been a fan of this place for many years. I got 2 Italian subs to go. I ate about 1/4 and then noticed something tasted unpleasant. My friend was eating the other sub and mentioned it too. We stopped eating. Something was NOT right. We dissected our subs. I think the mortadella was the culprit. It felt slimy. So $14 worth of our "Friday fun" sub experience went right into the trash! A few hours later I had cramps, nausea, and chills (I will kindly spare you the rest!). The sub was the ONLY thing I had eaten so far that day. This is upsetting to me. I had previously given them a 5-star review and had enjoyed BSD for many years. (Though I had no idea this place got whacked with the "Dirty Dining" hammer in July 2018 until reading it tonight). Hmmmmm... Genuine food for thought! So I will be kind and leave you 2-stars for the many years I enjoyed this place. I do wish you the best, but NEVER, ever again...

Huge portions, fresh meat, personable service, fairly priced. Not much more you can ask for

I loved this place! The sandwiches are a fair price and they're so filling. They definitely know how to make a good deli sandwich. I don't remember the names of what me and my girlfriend ordered but they're both pictured and they were both delicious. Highly recommend giving them a try I know personally I'll be back!

I am always on the lookout for a great deli at lunchtime. Because I am in St Pete regularly, I really wanted to like Big Steins Deli. Unfortunately, they did not live up to my expectations and missed their mark by a longshot. The restaurant was dirty in almost every corner and it seems that they are trying to hard to be minimalistic. More than half of their lighting fixtures are burned out which helped to underline the dingy atmosphere. I ordered Big Steins Italian sub. The bread was way too big for the amount of meat that they put on the sandwich. The meats were subpar and inferior; more than likely the cheapest that their food provider sells. The oil and vinegar was applied before my sandwich came to the table and the bread was literally soaked to the point of being mushy. To be fair, the menu says that the sandwich comes with oil and vinegar. Shame on me for not asking for it to be on the side. I'm not sure if I'll be trying Big Steins again any time soon. Whenever I do, I'll be sure to ask for the oil and vinegar on the side.

Good sandwich, fast service and polite staff. We went in there for a quick healthy lunch and they provided it with no issues.

Nothing fancy, but great sandwiches. It's just a small mom and pop type place, very little seating inside.

Wise, weathered and experienced; a full life heavily soaked with memories, stories and anecdotes. A life lived is the vibe J.J.'s gives. As I peruse the timeless passages in the store, I come upon shelves filled with a small eclectic variety of foods and sundries. Draft beer up front. Wine and beer varietals, many types and sizes of chips and a walk-in beer and wine cooler. The place has a welcoming, comfortable and casual feel throughout. Tables, chairs and a sofa reminiscent of Aunties or Grandma's place where you can slow your roll and reminisce. I was greeted by a friendly young man who confirmed I could order breakfast. On the boards overhead a long list of options. Mostly Wraps, Sanwiches and Salads. As well as a list of available breads. They are open from 8am to 8pm. Just before I ordered came an offer, "you can add or take off anything or choose any of the breads for any sandwich". I knew right away what I wanted. Extra Bacon BLT on pressed Cuban Bread. The results were sublime, every bite the same, the perfect crunch, uniform throughout, tempered by the exact proper portions of mayo, lettuce and tomato on warm pliable bread. Artistry for the palate and senses. I know a good sandwich when I taste one. My critique of sandwiches almost always centers and highlights the lack of ingredient order, quality, quantatative balance and construction. Thoroughly pleased, I decide to order take-out for my lunch and an omelet for my wife. I wanted an original, just as they make it, with no substitutions in order to test their further Mastery of Sandwichology. The Vito please, and since it's for lunch, mayo and dressing on the side to keep it dry. It was the closest they had to an Italian, my go to in all places that craft, meats and cheeses between 2 or more slices of bread. Hand crafted, artisenal, perfectly balanced, uniquely constructed , benefited by an abundance of trial and error and creative expertise that is only accomplished with substantial time and experience. The Vito was a lesson in the art of making a sandwich. Proportions and ingredients in perfect harmony. From the razor thin red onions and banana peppers to the quality of the constituents and the perfect order placement of the items. It was truly a masterful composition. I preffered it without the balsamic. Did I get lucky? Or is this what JJ's does daily. Can't wait to get back and find out. Plus, some extra money forsome of those items on the shelfs. Prices very reasonable and free parking out front. Come getcha some!

I think it's a better stop than the gas station if you're on the way to the beach. Though I did originally come here because I saw that they had gluten-free bread option, the gluten-free sandwich wasn't the best. I don't doubt that their gluten-full options are delicious. I would've just preferred the sandwich to be crispy. It was pretty soggy. But on the other hand, executing a gluten-free sandwich safely in a kitchen that has gluten is pretty challenging. I don't doubt that they did everything to cover the sandwich and prevent cross-contamination, which is probably the only reason it was soft instead of crispy. So I'm not shooting it down if you're looking for an option of something to eat and bring to the beach. Definitely go though if you're just looking for some beverages and chips, they had a lot of really cool stuff there!
