Man big shout out to Big Stein! I had the Big Greek Salad with potato salad and also had them add chicken to it. It was the best salad I have had in a very long time! It was loaded with feta and olives and the portion was enormous. Ugh! It pains me to write this. I have been a fan of this place for many years. I got 2 Italian subs to go. I ate about 1/4 and then noticed something tasted unpleasant. My friend was eating the other sub and mentioned it too. We stopped eating. Something was NOT right. We dissected our subs. I think the mortadella was the culprit. It felt slimy. So $14 worth of our "Friday fun" sub experience went right into the trash! A few hours later I had cramps, nausea, and chills (I will kindly spare you the rest!). The sub was the ONLY thing I had eaten so far that day. This is upsetting to me. I had previously given them a 5-star review and had enjoyed BSD for many years. (Though I had no idea this place got whacked with the "Dirty Dining" hammer in July 2018 until reading it tonight). Hmmmmm... Genuine food for thought! So I had a taste for some good deli food and looked up deli's in saint petersburg and Big Steins caught my eye, read some reviews (mixed) mostly good and decided to give them a shot, Walked in and a customer got his order and left as soon as I walked in, so now i'm the only customer and so I go to the counter and a gentleman says what you need and I say do you have meatball subs and he points to a leaflet and says there's the menu (red flag). Look at the menu and decide to order the Bronx bomber (on a sub roll) and greek salad he writes it on a pad and puts on kitchen ledge and yells someone's name and nothing, he yells again and some lady comes from the back and didn't look happy at all (like she didn't want to be there at all) emotionless, she made the sub and he prepared the salad; Get my items and liked how the bag had a little weight to it (a good sign), riding home I was thinking that this probably won't be to good with there dryness (not happy demeanor) but I was wrong, the sub was kinda like the subs I used to get in Pennsylvania, good bread and a lot of meat not like gateway subs (a couple slivers of meat and a ton of salad) and it was spot on (tasty) and the greek salad was perfect (no scimping of ingredients at all), took one star off because of dry attitude. read more

I am always on the lookout for a great deli at lunchtime. Because I am in St Pete regularly, I really wanted to like Big Steins Deli. Unfortunately, they did not live up to my expectations and missed their mark by a longshot. The restaurant was dirty in almost every corner and it seems that they are trying to hard to be minimalistic. More than half of their lighting fixtures are burned out which helped to underline the dingy atmosphere. I ordered Big Steins Italian sub. The bread was way too big for the amount of meat that they put on the sandwich. The meats were subpar and inferior; more than likely the cheapest that their food provider sells. The oil and vinegar was applied before my sandwich came to the table and the bread was literally soaked to the point of being mushy. To be fair, the menu says that the sandwich comes with oil and vinegar. Shame on me for not asking for it to be on the side. I'm not sure if I'll be trying Big Steins again any time soon. Before I first ate at Big Steins, I noticed the abundant amount of reviews complaining about the owners negative attitude. I'm a pretty easy person to please, and I understand that not everyone is- so I decided to ignore and give them a shot. It was good enough for me to return and as stated above, recommend them. On my last visit I was running behind and called to place a pickup order. In short, the owner messed up my order that he never read back or confirmed with me on the phone, then proceeded to get quite an attitude, blaming the mistake on me rather than just being polite and fixing it. This little sandwich shop just 'gets' it. Whether I am ordering one sandwich to bring to my sandwich-loving uncle or several sandwiches for a group. It is easy to order, easy to pick up and the quality is top-notch. Like everyone else, their prices have gone up in the last year, but there is still much value to be had here. Now do keep in mind that there is not an "experience" to be had here. The two booths in the shop are a viable option for dine-in seating, but the clear goal with this establishment is to provide a variety of old-fashioned New York deli sandwiches with several classic combinations and a few vaguely nuevo options. What a great surprise! It's a rainy Tuesday and I drove out from Brandon to look at some rocks for a Landscaping job. My husband wanted a deli sandwich. I am not a huge fan of deli.
