This Chicago gem is a quaint little spot nestled away from the hustle and bustle of St Pete but offers a lot of the favs that you would expect to find at a Chicago Deli. Greek Salad was also quite enjoyable and had generous chunks of Feta cheese throughout. Really enjoyed takeout from this place. I've been coming to Chicago Deli for over 30yrs! The quality of food went from a 5 to 1 - What once was fresh ingredients is now pre packaged meats. I got my usual turkey and Swiss, the turkey was slimy, smoky and looked like it came right out of an Oscar Meyer package. If I'm paying $8+ dollars for a sub sandwich, I want fresh cut deli meat. It would appear they have a new owner or "investor" involved and putting their influence 2cents in. Don't try to fix something that's not broken. This review is for the Chicago style hotdog and hotdog only. I was born and raised in Chicago so seeing this while visiting I thought hey let me try it out. What they have advertised as the Chicago style hotdog is DEFINITELY NOT the Chicago style hotdog. They most certainly used the wrong type of pickle, and hotdog was very small (skinny) they did manage to get the bun, and other ingredients correct (onion, mustard, relish, etc) when you say Chicago style we expect it to look as such. This place is unbelievably awesome they've had the same owners for 30 years today. I had the Italian beef sandwich which is a $9.95 luxury of life. I would take a picture of it but I ate it already. Just moved our business into the neighborhood so thought I'd try lunch here. Came in about 1:30 and was "greeted" by 3 women who all gave me a look like "what do you want" Kill them with kindness I repeat to myself. I order a chef salad to go. One lady mutters something then walks away. The cashier comes over and asks "anything else" No...rings me up promptly even managing a smile. Another woman comes out with salad says "onion and croutons" (sounds like an order but I think I have a choice) no onion please. Get back to the office not expecting much, The place is small, not spotless by any means but not a dump just a quick place to eat. Salad is impressively decent. Not one of those huge things with more lettuce then a rabbit would eat in a lifetime but nicely topped, no brown lettuce, basic ham, turkey, 2 cheeses, eggs and black olives. For $6.50 a decent enough lunch. Will have to try the chicago sandwich that others speak about after the New years resolution wears off! read more

Its hard to find a good Italian Beef sandwich or truly authentic chicago dog in the Tampa Metro area, but I think I have found a winner. It's been several months since I had gotten either directly from the source, but Chicago Deli certainly does it's name justice. The restaurant walls are covered with marathon and triathlon medals and awards, and pictures and mementos of Chicago. Wow! I can't believe I was asked to pay for this Italian an beef? At $6 plus change, it was cheaper than most around the area but it was awful! First of all it wasn't boiled with the au jus, it was individually wrapped from the fridge and it looked like was warmed up on the grill. The bread is legit and was toasted. My sandwich was a little small and kinda soggy, but I enjoyed it. They did stumble a bit getting our 3-sandwich order right. Also have tons of posters & signs about races & triathlons on the wall. Oh, its real, and the dogs are real, the beef sandwiches are real, the dive-y ambiance is real, etc. And its been there for years - you'd think more people would be talking about it. Don't expect to blown away or anything, but if you want a solid sandwich for cheap, you can't go wrong here. My friend got the dog, and having lived in Chicago, he was hit with a nostalgia bomb of flavor. Thanks to Man VS Food, I've always wanted a Chicago Beef Sandwich. While not official, this is probably the closest thing I can get in Tampa. I just enjoyed slurping up the juice as it ran down my hand - which is really all I wanted. You can get a number of other deli subs here, and the service is nice and friendly, though you get a sense that mostly regulars come here since its easy to miss the sign if you're going northbound. Which means you only catch it going southbound when you already have food. I seriously need to start going more often. read more

I've been coming here for 18 years. The place got a much needed face lift about a year ago. Fresh paint and new ceiling tiles to replace the old smoke stained ones. This place grows on you. Yes, there is no WiFi, Yes there is no TV. Heck, they only got a credit card machine a couple of years ago. I go to get a break from work. Grab a fresh sandwich and a free paper, just sit and relax. Ordered Ruben Sandwich ($7.76) - no sides or drink, the price was for just sandwich - and it was very disappointing and nothing special. They said they serve a homemade meat, but it looked like a store bought deli meat. Also, the bread was just a regular cheap store bought bread. For the quality of food and price, I felt like I would be better off eating at a fast food restaurant. I will not visit here again. read more

The dining room looks like it hasn't been updated since 1991 except for the out of place plethora of triathlon memorabilia. Normally this place is pretty fast and decent food, most of all its convenient location. But my recent visit was horrific. Only two people working the lunch rush, one woman was on the phone the entire time, and it took a half hour to get a sub to go. The worst part was the fact that one woman took off her glove to use her phone, then touched everything in the place and then continued to make peoples food. That is not sanitary at all. Looks like people use Yelp as their own blog to complain. All these negative are completely false. It is very clean as Bernice is always sweeping and mopping when I show up after 2pm nearly every week for two years. It is quiet. Sofia is the owner and the triathlon athlete, and those are her medals and awards she EARNED. I walk in and im greeted by Darlene she asks if I'm having my usual, and they get to work on it. They remember it exactly and i haven't told them in two years. How awesome is that? My sandwich is delicious everytime. I have never once had an issue with my food. This place reminds me of the deli's of my childhood in the 80's. It has that old-school deli smell -- like delicious, fresh sliced pepperoncinis and sweet ham. Not that yucky junk smell like Subway and Publix bread, etc. It's a little hole in the wall place you won't easily find so look for it and drive there. You won't regret it.
