So I have been there twice - once on a Wednesday and once on a Friday. I had the prime rib special on Wednesday - it was ok. I have had or made better myself. I didn't care for the smoked taste. Yes I know it was called smoked prime rib; I just wasn't prepared for that. The Friday visit I ordered a salad and got grilled chicken in it. It was very good. Hubby got a burger that had a grilled cheese as part of it and he really enjoyed it. Son got a burger and gave it two thumbs up also. We actually had the same server both times - nice lady, took good care of us. I hope this place sticks around; it is nice having a restaurant close to home with out heading into the city. read more

I'm not even sure 2 stars is justified but since 2 out of 5 of us good what we ordered it was fitting. Got there at opening, first ones in. Waited forever for order. My dad didn't get jis salad until meal arrived and had to send the salad back 3 times, still not right on 3rd time. His steak arrived worse than well done when he ordered medium well. No fries arrived with it. My mom's burger was chargrill burnt. My aunt's portabella was a burger, 1/2 burnt. Everyone who got fries had old fries. Slow service and the place was not busy the first time... foOd was mediocre at best. 2nd time got nachos to split with my wife and it was literally shredded cheese microwaved on chips for $16... burger was undercooked on both of our main meals. "Great service can kill bad product but great product can not resolve bad service" I live by and teach these principles but for the first time I'm conflicted. What about when the service of the restaurant refuses to make the product? Upon arrival I was greeted by a friendly woman at the front door who invited me to sit down anywhere that I like for service. The atmosphere was pleasant with 10 other people in the restaurant. This establishment was clean and well-kept and immediately gave me a very positive vibe. I decided to have a seat at the bar where a new employee was tasked with serving me, little did she know what she was getting into LOL The new employee approach me very quickly and offered a beverage as I reviewed the menu while also suggesting the daily specials and her personal favorites. A huge kudos to this woman because an impersonal server is just plain annoying, especially when you're sitting at the bar sending that subtle hint but you might be looking for somebody to chat with. In an effort to reduce my waistline, I decide to start off with an all-time classic of 10 grilled wings with salt and pepper on them. I ordered a Coke and she quickly scurried away to gather my beverage and place the appetizer order. Approximately two minutes later she returned with her head hung to notify me that my wing order is not something they could accommodate. Thinking that maybe I was not clear in my original request, I explained just to take the regular bone in wings and instead of throwing in the deep fryer, throw it on the grill. I'm aware that it will take longer to cook and that is something that was prepared for since I was already having a nice sitting experience. Again, a few moments later she returns with her head even lower to let me know that the kitchen was not willing to do it because of the amount of time it would take for them to cook the wings. What? What do you mean you won't? I understand if you were busy, but there are 10 other people in the restaurant 7 of which have their food already, is it really that big of an inconvenience to put them on the grill, you're in the kitchen anyways. Anyways despite her best effort to suggest alternative options like the smoked wings, I was not going to gratify the kitchen with "getting their way". Sadly this woman was caught in the crossfire but did her best to keep me happy. I ended up settling on a cup of chili and the fish and chips which has now just arrived to the table, standby for conclusion :) ................ I'm back, :( The chili was a little bit runny but still to my taste so I was pleased with my choice. Fish was OK I suppose, nothing really special about it except for the homemade tartar sauce which was delicious. Sadly, ever since being a kid I'm a french fry guy and these 3/16 inch straight cuts were room temperature at best. I've been visited two more times from the server to see if there's anything else that I needed leaving me feel like I am by far her number one priority, sadly she simply does not have the support of the kitchen. Overall, not a bad experience, I've certainly had worse but I've also received much better. Building a business is not as hard as everybody makes it seem. Treat your customers with respect, accommodate where you can and always strive to have a cleaner facility then your own home. Sadly, today the big Walnut Grill only hit one of those three. read more

Short review: Good food, good service and the ventilation needs to be improved because, when we left, we smelled like we had sat in the kitchen. Long review: I enjoyed one of the best portobello mushroom sandwiches that I have ever eaten. The bun was extremely good and toasted to perfection with a piece of crisp leafy lettuce and a very nice slice of tomato. I am a tomato lover and it is hard to find restaurants that will pay the extra money on top quality produce. The fries were hot, crispy and tastey. My BFF ordered a burger and fries which she thoroughly enjoyed. Generous burger size! The service was good, the bottled beer was super cold, just the way I like it! I went in around 8:45pm hoping for a good burger and to watch some sports on TV. There were a few people in there-10. A few were just finishing their meals, most were just having drinks. I ordered just a simple burger and fries. After waiting for 30 minutes, the bartender asked if my burger had came out yet. Well-- since you have been walking back and forth in front of me for the past 30 minutes and have yet to see me eating anything, my guess would be no. She said she was gong to check on it. 10 more minutes go by. An employee/ manager (whatever he was) comes walking out and hands her a plate with a pizza. 3 employees decide to start grabbing their pieces and sharing while I hungrily watch on. I was so damn hungry and mad by that time, I wasn't even sure if they had cooks back in the kitchen working. By that time there was no one else eating, no one ordering any food. 6-7 employees in there w/ 6 people at the bar and 2 tables with people. I wouldn't say the employees were working. I waited patiently for 40 min. for a simple burger. I had all I could take I was mad as hell, that they started eating in front of me, while I waited for 40 minutes. I will not be back. They fail at life I'm not normally a complainer or write reviews, but the service is crap. read more

I will start by saying I don't have a lot of faith in online reviews. I've tried so many places because of good reviews and been very disappointed many times. There are a number of unfavorable reviews for this place but not many recent ones. We've passed on this place several times because of the reviews but decided to try it and we're glad we did. My wife and I stopped for lunch when there was a large car show in the parking lot. They were very busy so we waited a while to get seated but good friendly staff. My wife got the barbecued chicken salad and it was a nice portion and very good with a house made ranch dressing. I got the bourbon chicken dinner with a baked potato and a side of sautéed squash and zucchini. The chicken was tender with a tasty sauce, the baked potato was good and the vegetables cooked just right with a tiny bit of crunch in a butter sauce. I find most restaurants in the Columbus area give small portions and focus on presentation. I personally don't care about presentation. I want good food and a decent sized portion. I got that here. I don't know if what we experienced is their normal but I'll definitely be back to find out. Good food, good portions and fair prices. read more

We've been here twice now. I'll start with the food, The nachos with pork or chicken are really good. It seems as if the chips are made fresh here? They certainly taste like it. They have a great kids menu. Our first visit, my hubby got the buffalo chicken sandwich. he said the flavor was great, but the chicken was really small, the bun swallowed that thing whole. As a former cook, he was disappointed such a small cut of meat was put on a sandwich vs used somewhere else. I had the Italian grinder/sub. I really enjoyed it. thought it was cooked perfectly. Tonight, our second visit, we got the nachos again (I'm pregnant & required them), I got wings for dinner, 5 buffalo & 5 bbq, they were cooked perfect. My husband got the hogstack sandwich. he really didn't care for it, which isn't like him. He kept saying it was really dry, so when the server asked if we'd like BBQ sauce he accepted, when he opened the sandwich, he discovered it was completely charred, which is why it was so dry. OK, so here's the thing, we like the food (for the most part), & will return, we'd like to see this place thrive as we live locally. BUT, the service is not good. I wanted to grab an apron & show some of these girls how to kick ass & take names.... The first time we went, we had an hour, when we still didn't have an appetizer after 30 minutes, I asked for them to bring our entrees in boxes... Annoying. So today, we go with an hour & a half. However 15 minutes into the visit our server still hadn't taken our drink order. So when she finally came around I said 'look, we're in a hurry so we're going to order everything at once, the nachos are an app, the rest can come out later, but we need to rush' - now we were not in a hurry, but who has an HOUR to wait for food? with a 2 year old? so anyways, all the food came out quickly, at the same time. which is fine. the server did a good job checking in & seeing our needs were met. I guess what bothers me is I shouldn't have to try to calculate how to have the meal delivered in a timely manner. If we have over an hour available, I shouldn't have to tell the server to put a rush on our food. So it's 3 stars for now. I wish it was as good as Pat A. said. We had the Jambalaya Pasta on Pat's recommendation. Either he works for the company, has no taste buds, Or I was just there on a bad night. The chicken was so dry in it as to be inedible. the shrimp were overcooked and the sauce came (or taste like) it came out of a jar, then clumsily seasoned. I had the pulled pork sandwich. The most generous grade I could give it is a B-, an that would be kind. There was nothing really wrong with it, just nothing about it was yummy. I didn't finish. My last complaint was the Margarita. We've tried this place twice now and both times the kitchen was slow. The second visit, after waiting an hour for our food to come out, I discovered they literally burnt my "medium well" burger to a crisp. The server was apologetic and went to tell the manager, but the manager never came out. They tried to make me wait another 15 minutes for them to make another burger, which I refused. When they brought the bill they still wanted me to pay for the charcoal briquet of a burger they brought me. I refused, asking for the manager, who was rude and tried to say I ate half so I should pay for half. They'll never see my money again. So much for trying to support a local business. read more

The big walnut grill is really nice inside well constructed and decorated but I think they need to remove the prime rib from the menu until they have found a better one. Last night I had one and couldn't get the bad taste out of my mouth. I was not well made. Now if the could improve the food to the quality of déco I they would truly have a winner. I've eaten at BWG a hand full of times. If I could break it down I would give 4 stars for food as they have a broad menu and good specials as well as good bar selection. However, their service is lacking and only deserving of one star. If you want to eat here I would not plan anything for right after as they take FOREVER. Tonite our family decided to attempt to eat here and were promptly seated by the server. We left after sitting at our table for 10-15 minutes without as much as someone coming and telling us they would be a few minutes. Other experiences have not been as bad but they sure do seem to take their time. Hope others have better luck than us. read more

Absolutely horrible experience! Waited 45 minutes - 1 hour for our food to arrive. I ordered a burger with grilled onions, but it came with nearly raw onions. Fries were lukewarm. My dining partner ordered a chicken tenders meal that included cole slaw, but none was delivered to the table. When I asked about it, one of the Staff brought over a small bowl that had cole slaw dripping off of the sides. Worst part? The hostess on TWO occasions walked past and grabbed an unused chair from our 4-top without saying a word! No "Are you using this chair?" no "Screw you we need this!" no nothing. TWO TIMES. My parents and I were driving through town and decided to give this place a try. We were all very glad we did. We ordered the lobster soup and broccoli cheese soup and they were both delicious. This place really needs to get it together had a party of 16 and 2 didn't get their meals, one ordered a bacon cheeseburger and there was no bacon. 2 ordered Italian subs and the onion had visible dirt on it and the lettuce tasted dirty. We walked in, 10 min later, no acknowledgment, so my husband asked for waters and menus.. 5 min later, we had menus. 10 minutes later we had wine. 10 minutes later we ordered nachos and a pizza. 30 min later we got nachos and 1 water (second request); 30 min later, we got an under-cooked goooo of a pizza we sent back.. Waiting.. hunted down our waitress--she said they burned the pizza, so they were making another.. 30 min later--pizza comes out gooier than ever... Waitress says "Pizza isn't our thing.." Would you like to order something else? How about our flatbread?" So, we got the flatbread. After already waiting sooooo long... The "flatbread" took 25 minutes to get to us and it was even chewy.. Disgusting! We're leaving, we get the bill... a round of wines we never got, pizza that didn't happen, and flatbread we didn't eat.. However, they did take $10 off the total---Over 2 hours spent on this place--I have never not tipped a server, but in this case.. NADA.. The service is absolutely terrible! The kitchen staff might be to blame, but in the public's eye it's all the same. If you want slow terrible food, this is your place!! read more

What a lovely late lunch we had today. We split the cod daily special, w/loaded baked potato and cole slaw. My partner had the salad w/the steak, crumbled blue cheese, onions and tomatoes. Everything tastes deliscious and fresh, our server did a good job keeping us loaded w/drinks, extra napkins and salad dressing. The service is good not great, and the food could be better. As you walk in the place looks awesome, but once you sit down the food and service doesn't match up. Both times I've been here they've been "out of" most or some of the draft beers. Not a good sign. It's a shame because Sunbury needs an awesome sports bar like this. read more

The only reason why I've gone to this place is because on Monday's their burgers are half off.. Other than that it's just to much money for what you get.. I never leave full which is disappointing, and on one occasion I had a waitress "accidentally" short me about $10 on my change.. I walked up with my receipt and mentioned that I didn't get all of my change back (I handed her a $20 for a $5 bill, only got maybe $6 back) she just smirked like she already knew and handed me my change.. Needless to say she didn't get a tip from me that day.. Slow service. Took server 7-10 mins to greet us and food took a very long time to hit the table. My friend got a burger, I had a BBQ chicken salad. Burger looked decent. My salad was really bad. All iceberg lettuce, poorly cut (giant chunks) and whitish brownish. Avocados were flavorless, tomatoes were over-ripened/mushy. Had very little chicken and I bit right into a small bone/tendon. Went to a show last night to see McGuffey Lane. Had a little bit of food and some beer. The service was hands down HORRIBLE, with the exception of 1 gal who ran her butt off!! Just because there's a show and there's a lot of people in there, ESPECIALLY when a cover charge is paid, the service should be AWESOME!!! When we walked up to the bar to get a drink, we were first ignored, then we got a young man's attention who supposedly was getting out order. While we waited, a gal asked us if we needed help. We told her we already gave our order, and it should be done and could she check....She came back and said we had asked a bar back and that's why it didn't get done.....Um, SO?!?!?!?! I mean really? Also, had heard a while ago that the food wasn't really good, but thought it's been a while, maybe that's changed. NOPE, still not very good, greasy, sitting like a rock in the pit of my stomach then sick when I got home.... McGuffey Lane is ALWAYS AWESOME and had absolutely nothing to do with the food or service. My goodness, get it together Big Walnut Grill!!! Sooner rather than later.
