Fun brewery in Skowhegan, Maine Beers that we tried were very good, but they were out of flight glasses so only were able to provide a tasting. Pizza was wood fired and should have been amazing but doesn't seem it was cooked hot enough so crust was limp. Toppings and cheese were very good although the sauce was on the sweet side. I have to say the GF crust was fantastic and had a very good crisp in contrast to the regular crust. Could use additional help to clean tables and fans in restaurant, otherwise really clean. Very cool scene in Skowhegan, which is not a place that has many cool scenes. This, is I am sure why it was so busy, the locals must spend a lot of time here, which while good for the owner, makes the place a tad insane. It was crazy inside, I had to pick up my hot pizza on a pan (they gave me oven mitts because apparently I would have been burned if I didn't have them) and maneuver my way through a packed room with it to get it outside. It was also super loud in there, so much so I couldn't hear a word the bartender was saying. So that's all cool, but I was thinking dog friendly, beer on the lawn kinda vibe. Not fight your way through a throng of people holding a hot pizza wearing oven mitts. What an environment!! Live music, lawn chairs and tables to use and you can sit wherever, picnic tables, fire pits, cold beer (big cup!) and awesome fire grilled pizza. Would come back anytime!! This was our 2nd visit to Bigelow Brewing Company and after our 1st we were excited to bring our friends and kids with us the next time because of the great atmosphere. The food both times was alright. Nothing I would brag about. This last time it was a little cold, but I think it was because we had ordered several pizzas and they don't call you over until all are finished. I wouldn't mind if they called you over as they were coming out personally. My reason for leaving a review is the service though. The gal that took our order was pretty rude when we inquired about how they handle gluten-free pizzas. She was very adamant to let us know that even though the crust was gluten free that the way they handled it, there would almost certainly be cross contamination. We let her know that we understood that they obviously have flour being used and that it would be cooked in the same oven as other pizzas, but if they could please take some precautions when making, cooking and handling it. I know to a lot of people the whole gluten-free thing is a fad, but for my daughter it is not. It is very difficult when eating out to find options for her so that she can eat with the rest of the family. I feel if restaurants are going to carry gluten free items like pizza crust then why not make the effort to keep it that way. Otherwise, don't have it at all. Given the I don't give a crap attitude from the staff I'm fairly certain no precautions were taken and as a result my daughter's stomach is in knots this morning. If you have a gluten allergy this place is not safe to eat at. read more

Well, I finally had a less than stellar experience at Bigelow. Ya, I know it's easy to get your dander up for something that isn't as expected but I want to write about it anyway. There are a few reviews on Yelp. I think all are fives. Deservedly so. But, I made the mistake of going to the brew bread cheese fest last weekend. I think they need to work on their concept. First, Skowhegan has little to do on the weekend. I am here only six weeks a year every summer. So I am always on the lookout for entertainment. We saw posters for the event and figured it would be awesome fun. So, how was it? Well, I paid $15 to get in which got me what?"free" tastes of bread and cheese from vendors carts. Really? Is this a joke? I get that for free at farmers markets. Oh, wait, I also got a wine pairing. Let's talk about that. It happened every hour on he hour. I got a ticket when I came in. I went at three pm. Gal says, we're out of wine, come back in a bit. I came back. What do I get? A swallow of horrible beer, not a glass or cup. A swallow. And a very small bite of bread with a dab of cheese. And then she says "I need your ticket" like I was gonna pass it off or use it again. This could all make sense at a far lower price. I am not cheap but this is truly robbery. These folks are not going to get repeats if they try this again. Anyone can tell when they are being cheated. Maybe they think tourists are stupid. Not far wrong. But you never want your mark going away thinking he has been taken. read more

Visiting 3-4 times previously, we made our way back there today with family from out of state. Our past visits we were treated to welcoming smiles, prompt friendly service, and a family atmosphere. With the ongoing covid challangs, I would expect any business the work hard to earn your dollars. Perhaps the employees there today did not get the memo. I was truly embarrassed, my family was treated with rude indifference, sarcasm, and foul mouthed servers while ordering their drafts. The pizza was mediocre at a premium price, and again rude service from the pizza cook. All in all, I give our experience today a zero and it will be a few years before we return. I hope the owners realize the damage to their hard work and efforts these young people bring to driving the customers away. read more

We were really hoping to love this place but it fell incredibly short on our apparently high expectations. Pros: The wood-fired pizzas are delicious. We had the 'Carnivorous Pizza' special and it was a hit!!! Even with a 1 1/2 hour wait time that they failed to mention until after I'd already paid, it was totally worth the $24. Cons: 1. THE BEER!!!!!! My husband had the double IPA and I had the pale. The pale ale tasted more like a lager and was much more 'malty' than we liked. The double IPA was somehow seriously lacking in hops! Both were underwhelming, to say the least, and lacking in flavor overall. 2. THE SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Female with dirty blonde hair and a nose ring in particular). Don't walk up to your patrons in line asking if you can help them with a chip on your shoulder acting as though you're being inconvenienced by their mere presence. After the disgusting attitude, the audacity to push out the tip jar toward me was laughable!!! If you can't at least be courteous, customer service is not the career path for you. All in all, this establishment did nothing to warrant us ever returning between the poor quality service, beer, and extensive wait times (which I'm certain now are only because this type of establishment is a commodity in the area). read more

This place is awesome!! Friday night is special. Lawn chairs, free acoustic music, and wood fire pizza (tasty). Bean bag games feels like a family picnic. Bigelow Brewing Company is definitely a hidden gem owned by a local family who all works there. it is hard to find in Skowhegan, Maine but worth the effort to do so. I tried it for the first time recently. I should say that I dont really know much about beer except that I usually enjoy it. Craft brew, micro brew, its all the same to me. What I know is, that the beer here is good and the hops used come from right behind the owners house. What I am an expert on is Pizza, and Bigelow Brewing does it exceptionally well. It is served out of a custom built outdoor wood fired oven and the taste that the wood lends to the crispy local made thin crust dough is what sets it apart from other styles of Pizza. Bigelow Brewing is currently only open on Friday Nights and Saturday afternoons and nights. Each night a different local band performs and the crowd gathers early both indoors and in the old converted barn (which is now half microbrewery and half dining area) or on the large lawn. Folding camp chairs are provided or you can bring your own. Each weekend the pizza menu changes depending on what the chef is able to purchase locally but it is always something unique, inventive and most of all fresh. The cheese comes from nearby Norridgewalk, the dough from Skowhegan and the toppings from all around the area. Our choice for the evening was a Blueberry Pizza, but first up was some wood fired Chicken Wings with Bigelow Brewing Brown Ale BBQ sauce. The wings were not to sweet and had just the right amount of BBQ tang with a hint of smoke. These really hit the spot. They were served with a really garlicky homemade Ranch that was also very good. The Blueberry Pizza stole the show. A perfectly wood charred 12 inch pie was topped with a semi sweet Maine Blueberry Compote, house smoked Bacon, local Gorgonzola Cheese, and local peppery Balsamic Drizzled Arugula Lettuce. The sweet, the smokey, the salty, the savory and the spicy flavors combined for pizza perfection ,and my wife and I finished the whole thing with no problem. Bigelow Brewing is great and if i had one suggestion it would be to have some dessert options as there were none to be found and also extended hours would be great because the pizza is so good why limit it to just two nights? I will certainly be back and I encourage anyone to make the trip and see for yourselves why Bigelow Brewing Company is so good. So I live in Portland and am doing the maine beer trail map- I swung into this place on the way to Bangor and they were closed for an in town beer festival! Despite this, Eric, their fabulous chef showed amazing hospitality and poured us delicious samples of their chocolate chili stout, glorious brown ale and gave us a sample of their devilishly good chocolate stout bread pudding. He took time out of preparing the food for the beer festival to give us the scoop on their regular live music, amazing local presence, and when we could come back for 4 course sunday brunch. Have been to this brewery twice and both times bad experiences. First they were out of all beer but one. Said expanding (under construction) but beer sold nowhere in stores as not enough production. Went again yesterday mid afternoon on Saturday and when got there saw person lock door and run around behind house. He clearly saw our car drive up! We had called ahead and they said open till five but were closed before three. Facility looks nice, but only opened total of eight hours a week and seems can't get beer even then!
