An appointment was made for an Surgeon and I had the most painful dental experience ever. It took so long I regretted having it done. I was not offered any way to wash my mouth out and No stitching was done to close the area and I drove home blood clotting in my mouth and on my clothing. I will never go there again and I don't recommend you do either unless you plan to pay for expensive painful service.

Settle in for a long and frustrating read. I have never had a worse experience with healthcare…read more"professionals" in my life. I went in for a routine cleaning. They said I needed a crown. They ran my insurance and gave me a breakdown: I would owe about $500 after coverage. I signed the document and agreed. Then the crown turned into a root canal, handled at another location. They ran insurance again--this time I'd owe $180 more. Again, I agreed. Back at the original office to finish the crown, I went through five appointments. Only after treatment was finished did they tell me there had been an error entering my insurance information. As a result, insurance would cover none of the $3,200 total. Five painful appointments. Two locations. It took them weeks to notice the error. They admitted it was completely their fault... and still told me I had to pay in full. No accountability. When I spoke to the office administrator, she had already printed out scanned consent forms--clearly ready to deflect. She repeatedly said, "It's the patient's responsibility to understand the details of their coverage," as if it were my fault for trusting their staff. The idea that patients should be responsible for catching their mistakes is insane. Imagine discovering your bill is six times higher than you agreed to. This is clearly unethical--but sadly, legal. Treatment was done, and I had no way out. They had me exactly where they wanted me. In any other industry, this would border on criminal. But there's no law protecting patients from negligent dentists and clueless office staff. We argued for two weeks. Eventually, they agreed to cover half the balance--leaving me to pay $1,900 total (including the $800 I'd already given them). I just came in for a cleaning. Now I'm out five painful days off work and $2,000--with a root canal on a tooth that never hurt before. Other problems: The dentist was terrible at numbing. I had to stop her multiple times due to pain. The cleaning took forever. Their handheld x-ray machine malfunctioned--they fired dozens of x-rays at me trying to get it to work. Not sure that's safe. The hygienist's Dremel tool exploded while adjusting my night guard. Debris flew everywhere. No one was hurt--but it was a fitting end to my time at River Run. Avoid this place. They'll hurt your mouth and your wallet. But hey, at least they offered me a blanket.

I was also able to get in next day to get molds for a much needed new retainer, as the one I had was falling apart in my mouth. Everything went great and super quick. I was in and out. So I looked him (Dr Simon) up and followed him to VCAD. VCAD has gained my trust, I only have good things to say. The dental hygienists have never been rough or given me pain. They offer local or gas anesthesia if you have very sensitive teeth. On my visit yeterday, Aislin did a wonderful job with my cleaning and explaining the status of my teeth. Need more, flossin...of course... Dr Bilajl (new) did my exam and NO CAVITIES!..She was great also! Since I don't have dental insurance, I pay out pocket. I thought $150 was reasonable for clean, x-rays and exam. The office is tucked in a back corner in a commercial plaza. Plenty of parking. If you are looking for a dentist in the Midlothian, Chesterfield, Richmond area, give the stellar staff at VCAD a shot.

Avoid This Dental Office at All Costs…read more I'm writing this to warn others before they go through the nightmare I experienced. I trusted this practice because my daughter recommended it, and I regret not doing my own research. From the start, there were red flags, but I pushed forward anyway because their billing department was surprisingly efficient and had everything pre-approved. The dentist, Dr. Alexander, also had much more availability than others, which should've been a major warning sign in itself. Unfortunately, this turned out to be one of the worst decisions of my life. Dr. Alexander Simon, (or vice versa he has 2 first names) without a doubt, the most careless, heavy-handed, and clumsy dentist I have ever encountered. Despite having a good support staff, it's clear he's a micromanager who insists on doing everything himself -- even routine cleanings, which were the roughest and most uncomfortable I've ever experienced. He overbooks appointments, rushing back and forth between patients with little care or focus. I learned later that this is because when he's not here, he practices dentistry in India, squeezing in as many appointments as possible before leaving. During my implant process, I felt more like a test subject than a patient. He was abrasive and dismissive throughout the procedure, even laughing while I gagged and choked on water he flooded my mouth with. I was in visible discomfort, and rather than showing concern, he found it amusing. He repeatedly pressed metal tools against my lips with no delicacy or consideration. Once the anesthesia wore off, I was in excruciating pain that lasted far longer than normal. I later discovered that he had gashed my gumline, making it extremely painful to eat or even drink water. When I brought this up to him, he laughed again--like my pain was some sort of joke. I even asked if he'd like me to try it on him so he could understand how it felt. Despite the trauma, I continued with the implant procedure because I had already paid and assumed it was too late to change providers. About a year later, the implant started coming loose and causing severe pain. I didn't want to go back, but most dentists wouldn't see another doctor's implant patient, so I felt stuck. When I returned, Dr. Alexander Simon refused to take any responsibility. He blamed my pain on teeth grinding--something no other provider has ever diagnosed me with. I reminded him that he had gashed my gums previously and insisted he shouldn't bill my insurance again for a problem he likely caused. He casually offered to "work something out," as if that could undo the damage he'd already done. I didn't care if he offered to fix it for free--I wouldn't trust him with my mouth ever again. What's worse is that I later filed a complaint with the dental licensing board, only to find that someone else had experienced *the exact same issue*--a gashed gumline caused by this same man. It's unbelievable and infuriating. Now, because of Dr. Alexander's negligence, I need gum grafts and a completely new implant. My insurance won't cover it because they already paid once. Meanwhile, he had the audacity to bill my insurance again just for seeing me--even after everything. I'm furious, heartbroken, and honestly traumatized. I truly hope this man loses his license. No one deserves to experience this kind of incompetence and disregard for patient welfare. Please don't make the same mistake I did. Do your own research, listen to your instincts, and stay far away from this practice.

This has happened multiple times to my family where RRD presents a quote that shows after insurance out-of-pocket fees for proposed services. Each time I have agreed to proceed based on those quotes and paid for the quote balance before leaving their office. Next thing I know I receive invoices for fees still due after insurance payments that are very significant. I have met with their billing/treatment coordinator and was told that they do not normally contact insurance companies for establishing customer quotes, but use a general database, although they present "insurance pays" amounts in the quotes. As a note, I did sign each quote that states that I will pay balances not paid by the insurance company, but I assumed quotes would be accurate or at least in the general ballpark. In the future RRD staff has agreed to actually coordinate with my insurance company to provide an accurate quote (this is not standard policy, so you have to ask for it), but I will not be going back. I feel ripped off. FYI, my insurance company is a major insurer.

Well I won't be recommending you anymore in the future if anyone asks me for a dental group. You can say what you want but trying to be a spin doctor and lay blame on the customer when your staff assumes to cancel future standing appointments without asking and confirming is INEXCUSABLE!!!

I rarely write reviews, and the ones I usually write are positive. I went to Virginia Family…read moreDentistry because of the glowing reviews, but my experience was quite different. I've lived in the Richmond area for over 40 years and found their business practices concerning. My 19-year-old son, 17-year-old daughter, and I had appointments last week. After being informed that our new patient visits would total $577 for the same services (since we are self-pay), I agreed to proceed. While I understand my son is an adult, I made it clear that I would be paying for everything. I grew concerned when my dentist suggested pulling a back tooth due to a gap that might cause bacteria issues, despite no current problems plus making recommendation to see their periodontist and pushing a possible the idea of an implant for the tooth; as well as, selling them on their orthodontist after I mentioned that I had seen the orthodontist the day before...which they said they never got x-rays for and it didn't matter because theirs would be different. Additionally, we were told afterward that my daughter's visit would cost $60 more due to extra X-rays, which we were not informed about in advance. It's comparable to a mechanic doing extra work without getting your approval first. I decided to go along with it, appreciating the new patient discount. They then informed us my son would need a deep cleaning instead of a regular one and scheduled it for this week, again without giving any pricing information. When he asked if there would be extra costs, they implied there shouldn't be. Later, we found out this service would cost over $200. This was surprising since we were told otherwise, and they knew I was responsible for the payments. When I asked why we didn't receive a discount for my son's previous visit since he didn't get a cleaning the first time, they said his services were different. How? When the whole purpose of the visit was for a check up and cleaning. After speaking with the office manager, Lauren, I felt unheard and unacknowledged as a customer. She did not apologize or address my concerns, only defending their position. As a business coach and consultant, I've rarely encountered such poor customer service communication outside of the restaurant industry. We ultimately decided not to proceed with the additional service. Virginia Family Dentistry's communication with patients is lacking at best and unethical at worst. They lost out on over $1,500 of upcoming services we would have needed and the lifetime value of a customer. Choose carefully! They will not be getting any recommendations from me. It's noteworthy that they've disabled reviews on Facebook, which might explain the abundance of positive reviews here. I prefer practices that prioritize people over profits and are not influenced by private equity.
