We've been coming here for a few years and the dentists always compliment our teeth and have never pointed out any issues. I feel like they're honest! The sub level of post care from this dentist has left me in pain without any recourse…read more My procedure happened on October 30th and I was sent home with no post care instructions, just a remark by the assistant that I should be good to eat and feel all numbness go in 2-3 hours. I had to go back with days as the bite was painful even with drinking water. I am no dentist and can not self treat. I had to go back 2 second time with a week and the dentist waving his hands in the air simply said, he can't do anything!!! When I voice my frustration. He refused me any further treatment and said I could go see a different dentist. I followed a medical practitioner's advise to preventive care and am now left with pain and suffering, neither of which I had, had gone to his office for a free dental cleaning. Today, he replaced a crown that had come off, and his work prompted me to write this review. He first had to reshape the tooth structure under the crown and prepare the tooth and then re-cement the crown. There was no discomfort and everything was fully explained. The crown feels great. The office staff is also very professional and courteous. Highly recommend this office, and in particular, Dr. Lenoir.

They were speaking on the phone to other patients and kept a friendly and calm demeanor and tone. I met with the dental hygienist Amanda H. and she was so patient and kind. I expressed that I was a coward and she was so compassionate and she had a gentle hand. She explained every step of the process and put my mind at ease. After a short while, Dr. Wong came in and did his examination. He was so nice and had the best bedside manner. He was efficient and thorough and answered all my questions. This is a place that I would highly recommend.

The not so good part is a bit lengthier unfortunately and sort of based on my personal experience. A little back story is that I'm a disabled vet, so generally, all of my care is handled at the VA hospital. Occasionally, when they are very backed up and overwhelmed, they will outsource you to a place in town and foot the bill for it though. Enough back story... Last year, I needed to have a new oral appliance (think like a retainer) made for my sleep apnea when my old one was damaged and the VA sent me here. This place gets the referral from the VA and I have my appointment to come in to have the imprint/mold made to make the appliance. Awesome! Except... they won't make the mold until they do a cleaning. Fair enough. It has been about a year since my last one. Let's do it. But wait... It is going to be a BIG job, so they want to break it up into two deep cleaning sessions and only do half of my mouth each time. *Sigh* Okay. Whatever gets me closer to being able to sleep again. Two separate cleaning appointments later and I go back for another appointment to have my imprint made and, wouldn't you know, I have a cavity that needs filling and they can't make the imprint until after that gets filled. *Annoyed sigh* After that filling, they can't make my imprint because they aren't happy with one of my previously done fillings, and can't (or won't) make it until after they rip out the filling that is already there and redo it. *Frustrated grunt* But they handle all the insurance stuff with the VA, so I just let them do it. I am still in UNBEARABLE pain a week later. I call because at this point, I am pretty sure they messed something up with the filling because even my wisdom teeth removal stopped hurting after two days. They will happily schedule me to come in and check if they messed up... After they clear it with my insurance and receive confirmation for payment. Which was the first time I actually got upset because I am in constant pain, still can't sleep, and they are charging to see if they messed up... Everything gets cleared up and I finally get to go back in after they are sure they will get paid. Obviously they say they did everything right, but they want to schedule another appointment for me to see about a root canal or extraction. But, they will not make my imprint until after I take care of that tooth that is "not messed up". At this point, my perception is that they were intentionally drawing out services to get the VA to pay for them. Whether or not that is actually the case, I still had to reach out to the VA, who did agree that it felt like I was being strung along and was no closer to getting the imprint for my sleep device. They immediately sent me to someone else who DID make the imprint and the device and I was finally able to sleep about 1.5 months later. Again, this is just my perception of my experience here, but I am very happy that I was not the one having to pay for every single appointment, especially a follow-up when I was pretty sure they messed it up.

( I had to get a couple of fillings several years ago and just recently had to get a mouth guard to help me quit grinding my teeth.) Either way she has been great and before her I saw Sharon a lot. She was also awesome. Their office has plenty of parking, it's beautifully decorated. Has comfy seating. They have guest WiFi too. She just wanted the abscess taken care of. They tried to make her get filling. She said no, she was already in too much pain. The dentist acknowledged the infection, but refused to do anything about it. Refused to even give her antibiotics. We spent 3 hours the next day at Med Express. That Dr. took ten seconds to tell her she needed antibiotics. I have NEVER in 59 years even heard of a Dr who refused to give antibiotics to someone with an infection.

But after what I was told today by my sister, as a dental assistant myself, I'm completely appalled and utterly disgusted by the sales tactics and lack of empathy with patient care. My sister is 22 years old and was degraded on her teeth during her appoint this morning. She was originally told that "essentially all your teeth are dead and if not, they're going to die soon so" (which after taking a look at her X-rays myself, that's the furthest thing from the truth) My sister was then told she would need multiple root canals and even implants. Dr. Guthrie proceeds to then share with my sister that "those options are rather expensive" and "can you even afford that?" After my sister called me crying about this visit, to say I was in tears and FUMING, would be an understatement. As my sister is very clearly being completely used for a sales tactic and punching bag of the day, Dr. Guthrie proceeds to tell her "a better cost option for you would be dentures". At this point my jaw is on the floor. This whole appointment was completely unprofessional and shows that Dr. Guthrie is just money hungry. As if this visit isn't horrifying enough, all while this is going on, my sister is crying hysterically and on the verge of a panic attack, and Dr. Guthrie had absolutely NO sympathy whatsoever and even made a joke "dentures at 22? wow what do you think about that?" Well, considering she was hysterically crying the entire appointment I'd say she didn't like the idea. She's young, alone, without her parents, knows nothing about teeth and this is the way you treat a patient? This is the reason people don't go to dentists in years. All it takes is one traumatic visit like this one. If you have dental anxiety please avoid this place. Or it will give you a reason for dental anxiety. I would never let Dr. Guthrie near me or my family or anybody I even remotely liked for that matter. I have not been to this location and I never will. I called on my sisters behalf and requested her records immediately. The PSR was kind the FIRST time I called and assured me she would send me her chart along with her x rays immediately. A little more than an hour and a half goes by and I have received nothing. I then leave my own procedure to call again and ensure I get these records because there's no way in possible hell that my 22 year old sister needs dentures. When I called for the second time, the PSR was rude and seemed annoyed I was asking about something that legally, they have to give you upon request. Once I asked about the chart and x rays that had not been sent she said "I literally just sent them to you 6 minutes ago"..... Well unfortunately you told me you would send them immediately so... immediately and 2 hours later are two completely different things. After FINALLY receiving my sisters X-rays, she has healthy bone, healthy teeth and maybe a couple cavities. I got no chart, no notes, nothing else that I requested. But it didn't take much for me to realize James River Dental is nothing but a sales tactic. Do better for your patients. This was absolutely disgusting and I hope other patients aren't treated this way.
