Dr Vanderwerf is a complete joke of a provider. He did what was supposed to be a same-day…read moreoutpatient surgery on my husband at eisenhower this past week. His OR time got pushed back several hours while we waited. We had a check in time of 1pm and they didn't wheel him back for surgery until after 5pm. When the PACU nurse finally came to get me in the waiting room around 7 PM, she told me that Vanderwerf had ordered my husband to be admitted overnight for observation. The doctor himself NEVER called to update me to tell me this or even tell me how the surgery went. The PACU nurse called Dr Vanderwerf so that he could give me an update (because of course the Dr was already home). He was rude and dismissive because I wanted to know why he couldn't give me the common courtesy of calling me himself or at least sticking around after surgery. When I asked him why he didn't call me, his exact response was "Well, we're talking now". To top it off, he never wrote any admit orders at all so my husband was transferred up to the fourth floor with no diet order, no med orders, no fluids, nothing. By the time our bedside nurse got the orders, the cafeteria was closed. Mind you, my husband was already fully awake, off oxygen, and walking around by 9:15pm but not allowed to eat or drink until the nurse got orders. Then somehow along the way, someone messed up and reported to the hospitalist that my husband has COPD... he does not and has never had COPD. But because it was reported to the hospitalist, she consulted internal medicine. My poor husband got an unnecessary dose of radiation with the chest x-ray that she ordered, and a whole set of a.m. labs the next day, which were completely unnecessary. Then (of course) we had to wait for internal medicine to round on my husband before he could be discharged, even though Dr. Vanderwerf came at 8 AM and said he was putting in the discharge orders then. We barely made it out before noon. So, a HUGE thanks Dr. Vanderwerf for the massive $$$$ inpatient bill that we are about to receive. All of this could have been avoided if he had sent us home and told us to reschedule surgery if he knew he was running so late. Avoid this place like the plague, people.

Once it was determined that I needed hearing aids I met with Dr. Wade Zarella and could not have asked for a better explanation of what I needed and why. Dr. Zarella helped me decide what hearing aid would work best for me and was helpful with what my insurance would cover and what I would need to pay out of pocket. I have been back to see the Doctor with questions and he was always available to help. I am now on a 6 month revisit schedule but I know if I have any questions the doctor or one of his staff would help me anytime. Thank you to everyone at the Hearing Institute of the Desert! I have no hearing in one ear and have a cross aid to help compensate for the loss of sound. Everything was adjusted, multiple settings, and they worked very well. Months later, my clever puppy discovered how to open the box they were in at night and decided to eat them. I contacted the office, and they were quickly replaced, but they no longer were the same quality of sound I enjoyed before the destruction. I know I exasperated her with my requests, yet the sound was not right. I've emailed the office for another appointment and am willing to pay for her time, but no one contacted me. The front office staff are there, but nothing stands out about their service or attitude. I hoped to have a long relationship similar to what I experienced with Beltone, but alas, that will not be happening.

I believe if your going to work with the public including doctors than you should be friendly, caring and treat people nice, after going to Dr Shaafs eye center for a while now, I have only found 1 girl who fits that bill and it was this past week on June 18th her name is Natchally, what a sweetheart she was so charming and caring, and showed concerned about my eyes she explained the 2 test she was going to give me, She was very through and put me at ease. There should be more ladies like her working out there, like they really take pride in their work and not so unhappy with their job by just showing up for a paycheck. Dr Shaaf is a good eye Dr. Thats why I go there. But the majority of his staff lack friendliness and care about his patients. I'm giving 5 stars because of Natchally.

She was told that a sugical schedular would make contact. It is now July 28th alnd despite multiple promisese there is still no surgery scheduled. The surgsery scheduler will not even answer my wife's phone calls. Dr. Shaaf performed cataract surgery on me, the husband, and I recommended him to my wife. His ability is not in qustion but his support staff, specifically his surgical scheduler, needs to be replaced or helped.
