On recommendation of a friend we were eager to try out Big's. Weird vibe right off the bat. Tables didn't fit the space, awkward & uncomfortable choices. I was closer to strangers then my dinner companion. Because they were out of pulled pork, I went with ribs. They were OK, not great. My sides, greens & slaw, were good as was the cider. I would have liked to have tried the burnt ends, but they weren't on the menu & our server didn't mention them - even when we asked what meats were available! Bottom line, we drove a long way (and passed many wonderful places) for what was below average service, average ribs, and above average prices. read more

I ordered the Iowa BBQ pie and substituted beef burnt ends. It came topped with slaw and sauce and was very good! There were only three burnt ends (although good size) so I had to cut them up and mix together. The Mac and cheese was good as well. Portions were reasonable for the price. I will go back! read more

Really good BBQ. Had lunch there with a friend on Black Friday. The cole slaw with raspberry Sriracha dressing had a great flavor. I ordered the BBQ salad which was pulled pork over the slaw. Quant little restaurant but there is room to dine in. I had the pulled pork with sides of cole slaw and their latest edition to menu, potato salad. Pork was very tender and very good! The burnt ends were great. Very tender. But the portion seemed small. The brisket and ribs we a little dry IMO. However my husband liked the brisket because he hates fatty brisket. The coleslaw was great; the beans were good; the corn bread was bit disappointing - especially the size of the portion for $1.75. The traditional red BBQ sauce was our favorite of the sauces. The lemon raspberry cupcake we got for dessert was wonderful, but they bring those in from a bakery nearby so credit goes to Frosted. Would come again but stick with the burnt ends for myself and brisket for my husband. Service was good - 2 people working hard to handle it all from bar to kitchen! read more

Cutest little BBQ restaurant in an old home in Mt. Vernon. Not a ton of space, and all the tables are pretty close together, but we had a very enjoyable lunch. The pulled pork was tender and had great flavor. The baked beans were delicious. They were out of a few things, but the service was great and they were very accommodating. The 2-meat platter was enough for my husband and me to share. With two beers and the platter, it was about $30 for lunch. read more

I stopped and had a pulled pork sandwich recently and it was incredible! Lean and tasty with no fat or gristle - smoked well. The bun was also delicious - not the usual Wonder style of bun - it is the little things that make a difference sometimes. I had the greens - delicious! The pros: Really good bbq- had the pulled pork, ribs, burnt ends, briskit. Good service. Quaint location- inside an old house. Great beers & cider. The sad part: We were a party of 4 including 2 very hungry college guys. One gal ordered a pulled pork sandwich- her sides were applesauce (a little plastic snack pack) and a bag of chips. One of the guys ordered the pulled pork sandwich w/ collard greens and a bag of chips and was still hungry so ordered a burnt ends sandwich (they had run out of pulled pork). We perused the menu online before settling on this place for an early Saturday night dinner. We wanted to order the Family Sampler. But- they were out of chicken and sausage. What? So we ordered 1/2 rack (which was 4 ribs), pulled pork, burnt ends, briskit and some sides. The coleslaw is okay- the beans are for sure canned, the collard greens were pretty flavorless. Like I said, the guys were hungry. So we wanted to order more ribs and pulled pork. Apparently, they'd already run out (mind you the place wasn't packed at all) of the ribs and pulled pork. I asked our waitress why they ran out of food before 6:00 on a Saturday night and she said that since they're closed on Monday they don't want to end up with extra food. Sounds like odd planning to me. Sure glad we weren't going there the next day, Sunday. Wonder if anything was left at all. We would definitely have ordered more and were very disappointed not to have been able to order what we wanted- the Family Sampler. I guess you have to go on a Tuesday to be sure to get the variety. I live nearby but just recently discovered Big's BBQ. Have loved everything I tried including the sides (great "greens" as healthier option particularly appreciated). My only suggestion would be to serve larger sizes on the sides with the big platter (which is full rack of ribs, 1/2 smoked chicken, mound of pulled pork, home-made sausage and home-made BBQ sauce all of which are fantastic!). Glad I live close enough to pick up as to-go as I'm betting their small dining room is going to stay packed as the word gets out how great their food is. (Beer good too, but so far I've stuck with their also very good root beer.) read more

One of those hole in a-wall-places you don't want anyone else to find. My favorite is the Iowa Pie with the added coleslaw. Speaking of the coleslaw, it's peppery and not too creamy. Just perfect. Everything that I have tasted, which is everything on the menu, has great flavor, including their wonderful sausages, chicken and house made BBQ sauce. Their beers, which are made on site, are amazing and feature a broad selection to fit anyone's taste. The restaurant has a comfortable, laid back atmosphere with an incredibly helpful staff. I went to Bigs BBQ wanting to like it, but it was not good. They were out of pulled pork and sausage so I asked what do you have, ribs, special brisket and chicken. With those choices I got the special brisket kettle chips and baked beans. The kettle chips are what most people call a bag potato chips. The baked beans were just like Bush's Baked Beans, no spice, no onion, no peppers. But the brisket took the prize, it was by far the worst brisket I have ever had. If it were pork it would have been pork belly. It was all fat. My disappoint went a little deeper as we were leaving I heard another waitress saying what meats they had, she mentioned burnt ends. My waitress never mentioned them even when I asked what they had. They do have good beers. read more

This place has only been open a few months and is a real winner. If you are a pork and beer lover, you will be in heaven. They have 8 home Craft brews on tap. Some of the leanest, meatiest, smoked ribs I have ever had. The coleslaw is homemade. barbqued beans are ok but I think they are canned. No fries but 4 types of kettle chips. Downfalls - No brewed Iced Tea, French Fries or beef brisket. The meat could have been a little warmer and refrigerate the barbque sauce not letting it ferment on the table. Some of the pulled pork was chopped a bit too much and seemed a little mushy or like ground meat. Did not see any desserts on the menu. I suspect they will only get better with time. read more

Meh....came on a Wednesday for lunch. First we were told what wasn't available; no sausage, no this, no that. All were rather main menu items. Some menu items are meat combos so when they are out of one of those, scratch that possibility off the choices. Checking other reviews, it would appear they are always out of something. We had the burnt ends starter ($10.95) so the 3 of us could sample them & decide if we wanted the burnt ends sandwich. Big disappointment. Not burnt ends at all, but a bowl of chunks of mostly tough meat. One in our party wondered if this was really them using up some left-over brisket. Can't really say but they simply were not burnt ends save for 3 of maybe 10 pcs and mostly really tough. By the way, be advised that brisket is only offered on weekends (unless they tell you they're out of it). We then all got pulled pork sandwiches. Very tasty & very tender but........we asked for more bbq sce and were given a squirt style bottle fresh out of the fridge. So now we are having to put REALLY ice cold bbq sce on our warm sandwiches. Made them very cold bbq sandwiches. Not good. Surely a bottle of bbq sce, like ketchup, can sit out during the day and get refrigerated at night! So, I'd eat here again if I found myself back in Mt. Vernon because the flavors have potential but I'd have to ask them to nuke some bbq sce next time & I'd be afraid to try the burnt ends again. read more
