I brought my road bike in for a $140 tune-up and am happy with the results so far. The drivetrain was spotless when I picked it up, and the bike feels great. My critique is the lack of online price transparency. I wish they posted their service rates on their website so customers could shop around and compare options more efficiently. I've been to the Bike Connection twice, not really by choice; but because both times I've had my bikes delivered to that location after buying them online. When purchasing on Giant's website, they give you a few options for locations, and the Bike Connection just happens to be the closest to my location. It's a nice bike shop, but in the past I've checked their prices for tune-ups and basic services and it's pricey. Anyway, my first experience was great, there was a chick working that day and she took care of everything, she helped me adjust my saddle, was super thorough when explaining me about which lights would be the best for night cycling, even installed my bottle cages, which she didn't have to do. On top of it, gave me a free bottle. She was great. Wish I could say the same about my last experience this previous Saturday. I showed up there at 6 pm, unfortunately (same as them) I also work on the weekends, and my schedules didn't really allow me to show up earlier. There's a manager, two dudes staring into computers and 3 bike mechanics. None of them seem eager to be there. They bring up my bike and the guy that was "in charge" of me, asks me to get on the bike. For context, my other Giant is XS (I'm 5'1), so this one I ordered in the same size because I'm aware of how hard it is to find a proper frame size for me. The saddle is incredibly high, to the point where I can't even get up by lifting my leg and putting my hand to the wall. The guy giggles. He says "maybe I need to adjust it a bit", so he does, barely. Same thing, he sees me literally struggling to get on the bike and giggles again; but I really want my bike set right so I suck it up and decide to be a good sport. He suggests me to "take it out for a spin", even before getting out of the door, I knew it was too high. I tried and obviously couldn't. I bring the bike back in after a couple of minutes, and he says "I don't think it can get lower, we might need to trim it". He passes the bike to the mechanic and they just make me feel like I'm bothering them. The bike saddle was STILL too tall, to the point where my tiptoes wouldn't even touch the floor, but I just gave up and took the bike with me. I got on the sidewalk to use it as leverage to get on the bike, of course, the minute I had to stop at a read light, I fell, because guess what? My feet couldn't touch the floor. The cycling community tends to be a little snobby, and everyone just seems to know better. The whole time this guy was "helping" me, I couldn't really tell if he was mocking me, or if he was completely useless for the job. Safe to say I won't be back to this place. read more

I've had my Gazelle ebike for about 3 years, and finally found a convenient and competent shop for its maintenance. I needed a tuneup and firmware update, and Bike Connection handled both of these within a day. My experience was great and the person who was helping me was an older gentleman. He really took the time to explain what mtb is and all the questions my friend and I could come up with. We were able to test ride two bikes: marin rift zone 3 and santa cruz 5010 C S (both 2022 and XL). While I had a great experience, my issue is about the santa cruz bike we were testing. We called a few days before to confirm the bikes we wanted to test ride. When we got there, the 5010 was not the right bike. Apparently it went from the stock Santa cruz bike to a custom-built 5010 with a huge increase in price. The specs were completely different in addition to the size change from XL to L. Luckily, the bike still fit my friend but it was pretty crazy how their online selection was not reality. While it was in budget, the sudden 600 dollar increase in price was not expected at all. Technically it was an upgrade but man I was a bit disappointed with the transaction. Luckily, mtb geometry difference from a L to XL isn't too extreme because you just need to make sure the seatpost and stem can make up the difference. Besides that, the service was great. I noticed that there was some issues and they were able to get it squared away within an hour before we left. Issues that probably occurred due to being kept within storage honestly so it's not anything against them. read more

We went in with the hopes of seeing a bike for my young 8 year nephew and we not only wound up buying a bike for my nephew, but my sister in law also fell in love with a bike and bought this one as well. While we were waiting, I had the opportunity to watch the service by Jimbo and others with 2 other customers and they were all on point. they fixed one fellow's brakes and tube and worked on the other couple all while we were there. There's been too much consolidation in the bike industry recently and there aren't enough good local bike shops left. I hope we can all collectively agree to buy all of our bike stuff from Bike Connection to keep them open and thriving. Their customer service is seriously incredible. I recently had a minor warranty issue with a Giant bike I purchased from Bike Connection and they took care of the issue right away with store credit and an exchange. That probably wouldn't have happened at a bigger chain bike shop -- I would've been without a bike and stuck dealing with Giant's customer service and warranty process forever. Both bikes I received from Bike Connection were on-the-button perfect. Carbon paste and grease applied properly, shifting and braking millimeter perfect. I brought a frame plus all part needed (minus the stem I purchased at the shop) for their mechanic to build up for me. I made it clear I would like the bike set up fixed gear, the rear hub is flip flop. I paid $238 for the build, that included having the wheels trued and just generally checking that all the parts were functional. The bike was set up single speed, the next day I flipped the wheel to the fixed side of the hub. I find that the fixed cog has not been properly tightened. Neither wheel is true. I basically paid $238 for a guy to bolt/ thread my parts together. If I wanted my bike to be set up but still janky and unsafe I could have done that myself and saved myself money plus the two weeks I waited for the mechanics to have the time read more

Extraordinarily sketchy. Found this place searching for bikes online. It looked like a really great deal on a little hybrid bike, so I called ahead and went on down. Huge warehouse space with bikes covering the floors, walls and ceiling. Two dudes working there. One long-haired one lackadaisically eating a sandwich at the front register and the other, shorter one who assisted me in locating the bike I had seen on their website. Even though there were no other customers in the store the guy helping me was rushing through the whole process at breakneck speed, seemingly indicating that he just did not have time to help me. On the plus side he did locate the bike quickly... When it came to sizing up the bike I wanted to test the weight, hop on the saddle, etc., but the guy would not let go of the bike. Not so much because he didn't want it to topple over; I got the distinct impression he thought I was going to like ride away or something. I asked about warranties or guarantees of any sort and the sandwich guy gruffly said "24 hours" which I found to be ominous and also not at all reassuring. The final straw was actually a flippant comment from the guy helping me, which implied that I didn't know how to ride a bicycle. I don't remember it word-for-word (in part because my mind went white with rage) but I do remember gritting my teeth and thanking them for their time while I walked out and over to a nearby Sports store where I happily paid 200 bucks more for the same bike. read more

I'm not sure what's going on with their sales managers. When I called them about renting an electric bike, the person on the other end initially answered my questions. However, the conversation took an inexplicable direction for me, and basically, for every other request and question, the manager answered, "Are you speaking with me or someone else?" I was quite puzzled. The conversation went something like this: Me: "Can I put in a reservation for tomorrow, please?" Bike Shop: "Are you speaking with me or someone else?" Me: "Yes, I'm speaking with you. Can I reserve a bike for tomorrow, please?" Bike Shop: "Are you speaking with me or someone else?" Me: "Yes, is bikeconnection.net your website? A year ago I was delighted to see an impossible-to-find Felt bicycle (with the right size frame) in the online inventory. I immediately purchased the bike online and picked up from this location a week later. Thankfully there is plenty of free parking (the store has a small lot) and the staff could not have been more helpful in recommending and installing accessories such as a phone holder, lights, bottle rack, etc. plus making the appropriate seat adjustments. I don't visit downtown SF much these days but it was worth the trip to the Bike Connection. My only complaint is that they do not have a wait list for high-demand bikes (this seems to be an industry problem) which is puzzling as presumably it would be a win-win for the store and its customers. read more

I've always had a great experience with Bike Connection since buying my Giant Contend 3 here last April, including my visit today. Unfortunately, on Sunday, someone stole my seat post and saddle and had also tried to use the bike as leverage against the bike post to try to break the ulock. I brought my bike in today, and Joe was able to get my bike good as new super quickly. I'm especially thankful he was willing to adjust the seat post & saddle based on some bike fit measurements I brought in - it's super comfy and feels the same as my old fit! He also buffed out some scratches and reset some of the chain on the gears! Thank you Joe and the rest of the staff for always being friendly and helping me out! 2 stars because the people behind the counter are mostly friendly. But I am really quite disappointed with a recent experience I had here. This place is half a block from my work so I have popped in for a flat repair and a random purchase over the years. About 3-4 weeks ago I went in for another flat repair and the guy pitched a tune up to me (I was asking about brake pads) and I figured sure what the heck, it's been a while. I spent about $150 on the tune up. I took my bike and and about 2 miles into my ride home found that I couldn't shift up onto the large front chain ring. Brought the bike back, my concerns were pretty minimized "oh it's a new cable, it needs to be stretched it should loosen up." They tweaked the bike a bit, handed it back. I'm like, OK cool. But again, 2 miles into my ride I could not get the chain to shift properly. Brought it back AGAIN, today. The guy put it up on the rack, said he couldn't find anything wrong with it. Tweaked it some more, rode it around the block, but concluded that he could find nothing wrong with it; and there were some suggestions that I wasn't shifting the gears correctly. "you have to ratchet it" and "maybe the parts are old" Call me crazy but my bike was actually shifting perfectly FINE before I had the tune up (that mind you, I hadn't been seeking). I think if you give someone's bike a tune up and then the bike isn't functioning well immediately afterwards, it behooves you as the bike shop, to figure out what is wrong - and fix it. And not act inconvenienced, irritated with the customer, and imply she isn't riding her bike or shifting gears "properly." It's pretty disappointing and frankly, insulting. And has me wondering had I been a man whether I would have been treated this way. While the chain seems to be staying on the large ring after today's adjustment, the shifting is all jacked up and I need to take it somewhere else to be adjusted. So a pretty poor tune up and a poor experience overall. read more

Two things were off putting (mainly reason #1): 1) Overt racism. I was in the middle of having my new Giant Revolt Advanced 2 purchase processed on the computer. Only one computer was still online. I was talking with my salesperson about ordering some wheels, so another employee asked to process a different customer's sale first. I didn't mind because closing time is busy and I was not in a rush. However, this other employee needed my name to save my purchase in the computer, so he can process the other customer. This other employee (old Caucasian male with white hair) asked my salesperson what my name was, but my guy didn't answer in time. Here's the racist part...so instead of asking me for my name, the employee announces to the shop, "Okay, let's call him 'WU' ", clearly referring to me. I was literally standing in front of him!! Why didn't you just ask me for my name instead of making up an Asian sounding name, just because I look Asian?! All this could've been avoided if you asked me for my name... Even the other customer looked over for a second at my reaction. I didn't want to cause any trouble, so I walked out immediately and decided to buy a bike from another Giant retailer instead. I'm never coming back to this location and would strongly discourage coming here if you look Asian. They might mistake you for "Wu". Maybe the shop in Palo Alto is better? This was not the level of service I was expecting based on all the positive reviews. 2) I knew more about the models and components I wanted than the employees probably because I do my own maintenance and I'm a gear head. read more

A year and a half ago I purchased a brand new Team Marin 2 hardtail mountain bike here. I was able to ride it for a total of about 4 months. This place sold me a brand new bike with a bent derailleur hanger. When I brought it back to them asking them to fix the shifting, they told me they did. I had to buy a derailleur hanger adjustment tool and fix it myself. I started having problems with my frame creaking. At first, I didn't know it was the frame and brought it in numerous times to have them fix the creaking. The sound was unpleasant and preventing me from riding the bike. They greased the saddle rails, replaced the dropper post, and every time claimed that they fixed the creaking, yet while riding it away from their shop it was obvious they fixed nothing. I told them I wanted a refund or a warranty replacement - I had spent $2800+ including taxes on a bike that I could not ride without becoming disturbed by the sounds it was making. They gaslighted me, acted like they couldn't hear the creak even as I coaxed the sound out right in front of them. They copped a serious attitude every time I mentioned warrantying the bike, telling me a manufacturer wouldn't warranty the bike for a creak. So I didn't ride the bike. I went crazy trying to grease things and figure out what the creak was. I started a dialog with Marin Bikes and spoke to an industry insider. It turns out Marin has known problems with these frames and catastrophic failures and creaks are so commonplace, Marin was issuing full refunds and had to update their design. By Marin's recommendation, I took the bike to a different Marin dealer (shoutout to Laurel Cyclery in Oakland). Jason Wallach, the owner barely questioned me when I told him I had a defective frame. He initiated a warranty replacement and I'm getting my new frame with the updated design very soon. I received some of the worst customer service of my life from The Bike Connection. I would recommend not buying a bicycle there or doing any business with them. They treat their customers the same way a scammer would. read more

I own a Marin bike and this is my go to shop because Bike Connection is an official distributor. I've always had an excellent experience here before the pandemic, but my experience during the great COVID induced bike shortage crisis of 2021 is the reason why I am writing a 5 star review. I brought my bike in for a tune up and a shifter level replacement because I was not able to do maintenance on it due to how swarmed every bike shop became because of the pandemic (have you called around recently only to be told "we do flats only right now"? I have). While these guys were taking the bike in they noticed that my crank arm and the other shifter lever were either completely busted, or about to lead to a critical failure (so that's why I was hearing grinding noise every single time I pedaled...). I trust their word, and would have gone ahead with the replacements in the "normal" times, except nowadays good luck scoring any sort of special bike part. The folks here (Ed, Jose, Cole and if I recall correctly, James or Jason) all went above and beyond to help me source the replacement parts by scouring eBay, taking extensive pics and spending a lot of time to make sure that I can get back on the road. They even apologized that this isn't how they would prefer to do things (asking the customer to source the replacement parts), but because of the shortage there is simply no other way around this. Long story short, I could not find the exact crank arm so I had to purchase the whole crankset (good luck sourcing an individual crank arm even during the normal times), but lo and behold the bottom bracket wasn't the exact match, so it was either finding a matching one or leaving me stranded with a busted bike for who knows how long. These guys went above and beyond and jumped on the opportunity to pick up the replacement matching bottom bracket on eBay while there was still one available and got my bike fixed up and riding like it's brand new. Yes, you could make an argument that I could have kept on riding on a busted bike without spending a bunch of cash to replace the whole crankset, but honestly when you can't even buy a brand new bike even if you have the cash, I am more than happy to overpay a bit for high quality parts and skilled labor to get the job done. Thanks to everyone here, I'm very happy to be back on the road. Already put a bunch of miles on it and all I can say is - money well spent! read more

I paid $100 plus tax for a E-bike rental for 24 hour. The bike was in great condition! Since this was my first time using one I asked the staff member to go over the bike and explain how it worked. He took 15 seconds to explain things which didn't cover where to connect the cord for charging, etc. So I had to ask additional questions about settings, etc. Then I noticed it was not fully charged. He told me it could take hours for a 100% charge. So instead of riding the bike as planned I took it to my hotel to charge it. read more

I am not one to leave a review (my Yelp history confirms this) especially a negative one, but sometimes one must draw the line. I am also not leaving this out of spite, but to address what I feel is a huge disservice. On Monday 11/15, I took my Merckx road bike in for a straight handlebar swap. Little back story that late last year I went to the Mike's Bikes in Berkeley on University avenue where the exact handlebar with internal routing was done. I was charged $60 plus tax. And so I get to this location for my handlebar to be changed. I already took out the tape so there was no need for that either. Jaime, one of the technicians came over, gave me a rundown of what needs to be done and said they could have it ready by Thursday. He then proceeded to print out a quote of $60, but called over his colleague, another tech, to confirm it. Another $20 was added to the quote after the work order receipt was printed for "new cables," and so I expected to pay $80. I did not argue this change in my bid to be courteous. On Wednesday, a day before I was scheduled to pick up the bike I get a call from another tech- Salvador telling me that I would now be paying $204 for the handlebar swap. Suffice to say, I was absolutely appalled. He kept going on and on about how they would need to change the cables, how it was labor intensive, and that his colleagues miscalculated!! You are telling me that 2 other experienced tech miscalculated on something they've probably done countless of times. Salvador then proceeded to tell me "he will see what he can do about the change in amount, but he can't promise me anything." This was after I mentioned my displeasure at the exorbitant discrepancy. When I went to pick my bike he kept saying, " I'm not trying to pull a fast one on you," which was interesting to say the least. I ended up coughing out $204.22 after he detailed all the fake discounts he gave me. One of the worst transactions I've ever done, and I will not be coming back. Worst part is none of the other techs that quoted the initial price bothered to come over and interject, as they were right there. Worst experience ever!!! read more

Many years ago I purchased a Marin Bike at this location - it used to be a Marin store. I got a flat tire on a Monday while riding down Market Street, and the two nearest bike shops were strangely closed (apparently its a thing for bike shops to remain open through the weekend and then close on Mondays). So I walked my bike over to the this location, which is now called Bike Connection. Within 3 minutes of arriving, my bike was up on a repair rack being investigated. It turns out all I needed was a new rear tube, so they replaced it on the spot in about 10 minutes. The total cost was $18 ($8 for the tube and $10 for the labor). While I was waiting, I perused the selection of bikes and bike accessories. I was impressed by the large selection of locks. They have every type of u-lock and chain lock you can imagine. This is not a bargain store. This is a higher-end shop. The pricing was high, but you get that back in great service. read more

I purchased a brand new Giant Stance 2021 from this business. Remy was great in answering my questions and guiding through the process of buying the bike and having it shipped to my home. I was told the bike would be assembled, adjusted and inspected, then disassembled, packed and shipped. When I received the bike in the box, the first I noticed was the front wheel was damaged by the crank arm hitting it in transport. After assembling the bike. I found it didn't shift properly. The chain also fell off between the spokes and the cassette. And, the Derailluer wouldn't go down past the 3rd gear from the bottom of the cassette.. There was also a lot of grindinding noises coming from the chain and cassette. Upon further investigation I found the shift cable not seated in the housing and the cable end on the derailluer frayed. Very disappointing. After releasing the cable from the derailluer. The chain went down to the last gear and fell between the frame and cassette. So I proceeded to perform all the adjustments the professional bike techs should have done. Chain tension,upper and lower limits. Cable adjustments. I have yet to replace the frayed shift cable. I further went on to perform the suspension adjustments which they told me they would do according to my weight. I'm wondering why they would send a bike out in this condition? I'm fortunate enough to be able to do the necessary work. But I shouldn't have to on a $2k bike. Very, very disappointing. read more

It's been years since I was last here b/c I've been lazy and riding my electric cargo bike (purchased elsewhere b/c I wanted something they didn't carry). I was pleasantly reminded of how very friendly and super helpful the staff are - and to see many of the same staff from pre-pandemic! To me, that's a testament to a workplace that treats its employees right. I'd been searching for new pannier bags and having a lot of trouble finding something that fit my extra-wide bike rack and that checked our many boxes of desired features. Yesterday afternoon, after quickly bringing up a bag from the Palo Alto store and calling to notify me (unlike some places you have to hound about your order), they spent probably 45 minutes figuring out how to adjust and install a set of bags for my wacko bike rack, basically putting the bags on for me, zip tying them, and then even taking my old bags to throw away. In the middle of it all, they even went upstairs to retrieve the bags I had returned over the weekend when I had a (brief) change of heart. Yes, I am a Very Demanding Customer. Amazing service!
