Rode by and got curious enough to check this place out real quick. It's a pretty decently sized bike shop with two people running it. They sell a kinda of curated goods from a small selection of tools, lubricants, snacks, and gear. I bought some very well fitted gloves there. What really impressed me was the way they operated the store. It got busy at one point and chilled out... then it got busy again, and they did not miss a beat! But on top of all of that, they were servicing bikes that had appointments or walked in, all at the same time! I was able to bring my bike in, but I also saw they had those bike repair racks in the front and back of the store - they're not playing around. I saw someone walk in with their bike listing off a bunch of stuff he wanted to look into fixing, and the staff person in the front immediately threw it on the repair rack and said 'let's take a look'. They also have this roller situation setup in the front where they can take your bike and run it in place to show what it does while in motion. This place means business and they are super friendly! I wish I had something like this closer to home, this store is doing a service to their local community. read more

I rented the Cervelo Soloist from High Trails Cyclery to race the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon. The staff was very responsive and helpful. When I initially made the reservation, it was for the Cervelo Caledonia. However, about a month before the race, they reached out and stated that the Caledonia was stolen and they had the Soloist in its place. I had test ridden the Soloist before purchasing my bike and found it a little too aggressive for me. The staff agreed to place a couple of spacers in to make it a more comfortable bike. When I arrived to pick up the bike, everything was ready as they promised. They placed it on the trainer and adjusted it for appropriate fit. I was very happy with the bike, the quality and the service. Highly recommend this shop, the bike and the crew! read more

Very small shop but the employees here are super helpful. I was looking for a specific part that they didn't have in their shop but they took the time to showcase and offer alternatives in house and online. I forgot the name of the employee that helped me but it was the gentleman with the longer hair and glasses. Overall, this place has a very open and welcoming environment. I have no doubt that this bike shop would treat someone who knows absolutely nothing about bikes the same as a professional rider. Hands down the BEST bike shop in San Francisco. Marcel, Brooke, Kay and the crew know what they are doing and are always so informative and welcoming. You don't get any of the condescending, know it all, type of vibe that a lot of other local shops give off. They have experience on all types of bikes so you can bring road, gravel, mtb or commuter here with no problem. I crashed my canyon (tricky proprietary frame) brought it here and they fixed it so it actually rides better than before the crash. They are SUPER responsive via email so I think your best bet is to send them an email before you swing by the shop. They definitely can be a litttttle bit more $$ than some other shops but it's 1 million percent worth it every single time because it saves money long run knowing that it's done correctly the first time around. Lastly it's always best to try to buy the parts directly from the shop but given the current market it's not always possible and they don't give you attitude if you have to buy a part somewhere else and bring it in which is so rare and so appreciated. read more

I've been to a lot of bike shops and this comes in on top of my many experiences. I didn't buy a bike from them but got my road-bike serviced here. It is probably a little pricier than usual but par for the course for San Francisco and for how high their demand is. Tune-up took a week and a half (again, high demand) but the work was great! I had a flat tire riding just five blocks from the store after I got my bike back and had to walk-of-shame back to the shop. Had two of the worst bike shop experiences here. Had my bike in for service and the owner was not very friendly to me and kept calling me "buddy." The work done was just as disappointing and their merchandise is marked up way past the market value. Also was really low on air one day on my way to work and stopped by for some air and he wouldn't help me out. Can't help but think he was a bit racist. Take your business elsewhere. read more

This bicycle repair shop upped itself to a whole new level of service being the only shop in the city, including motor scooter shops, that had a highly flexible knowledgeable repair person named Gui as the only one who could replace a Shimano rear brake and service the associated hub for an eBike. My electric bike was 10 years old without any service to its rear brake and Gui was able to determine parts and procedures needed no other store would accept to do. Without High Trails, my bike would have been finished and I have two of them! There was nothing in the maintenance manual to address the Shimano rear brakes maintenance that left me in potential danger. Thanks to Gui, I no longer need worry and my brakes are working great now! My experience with the staff is they are amazing and I highly recommend them as the best! read more

It was my first time Mountain Biking and it was such an amazing experience. I loved being outdoors in nature and Marcel made it so much fun. He made me feel comfortable, giving me detailed instruction on the high end, full suspension bike with emphasis on safety first.  He was extremely patient as we repeatedly rode on the same trail back and forth until I was feeling more confident to move to another trail.  Then, he always was close by, giving me tips but also making sure I was breathing, laughing and smiling - taking it all in.  He also kept gauging how I was feeling and would adjust accordingly anticipating turns, inclines and declines. The bike was solid and custom fit to my size and Marcel brings water, snacks, helmet and gloves.   Then, sending me dozens of photos of my adventure which I have as a keepsake of this amazing experience. I will definitely try this again when I'm back in Woodside.   Marcel was on time picking me up for the excursion from Canyon Ranch, Woodside and drove me back to my destination. Although I am a  novice in this sport, Marcel made me feel so empowered with what we accomplished in 3 hours.  What a blast!!! read more

They tuned and cleaned my old used bike really well, recommended component choices when I expressed interest in upgrades, fixed a flat quickly without hassle, and made a minor adjustment I needed for free. In every case, their employees -- Greg and Nick in particular -- were friendly, patient, and helpful, without the condescension that bike experts sometimes show toward casual riders. When they didn't have a specialized tool needed to adjust a rare folding bike, they adjusted my ride as well as possible, then volunteered information about another SF shop that might be able to do even better. While High Trails isn't my typical go-to store for bike gear and supplies, I stopped by here the other day to pick up a tire pump since I was tired of using a handheld one (plus it's easier to carry stuff home when the store is literally around the corner). There's a range of bikes, gear and supplies available. I drooled over the amazing looking rear suspension mountain bike in the window. There's a lot of Specialized brand bikes and gear here, which makes me even more inclined to shop here. Speaking with the sales guy there, I outlined what I wanted and what bikes I had. We discussed the pros and cons of two types of pumps and he showed me some different options at a range of price points. I finally settled on one and was quickly finished up at the cash. The sales guy that I dealt with was extremely friendly and helpful and I felt like I received 120% service. I will happily go back to High Trails when I need bike equipment! read more

Years ago, I moved to SF and was so worried about getting my bike stolen that I bought a bike from Target which I then took to High Trails to get serviced. Because of how crappy the bike was, they couldn't warranty the service and instead recommended I return the bike and spend a couple hundred more dollars for a bike that will be much more reliable and warrantied by their shop. I won't forget Marcel's face when I brought the bike in, he looked it over and was genuinely concerned, and said "Dude, you can't ride this bike in this city, you're gonna get hurt. The pedals aren't even installed right." This wasn't them trying to sell me, it was the best advice I could have got. I returned the Schwinn (or Huffy or whatever it was) and bought a lower end Specialized commuter bike. Four years later, the bike has never fallen apart and the first years work on the bike was warrantied (flat tires, issues with gears, etc). All the guys at this shop have always been super helpful and nice about everything and no pressure on any sales. Every time I bring the bike in, they have the right advice, and sometimes it's that nothing at all is wrong. They even gave me the best advice for not getting my bike stolen: pinheads on the front and rear tires and and an Abus lock. I've put that bike in some sketchy areas and it hasn't been stolen (but don't ever leave it overnight!). I've been to a ton of bike shops in SF, and this is by far the best. Note that they only sell Specialized (its a brand) bikes. read more

Disappointing experience with this shop. I bought a bike about two years ago and have spent a good chunk on maintenance with them. They are nice guys, but every time I walked in there it felt like I was bothering them. I also brought my bike in at least four times for a recurring issue, one of which was admittedly their fault and they were going to charge me again for fixing until I pushed back. Overall, there are better bike shops in SF, but this isn't the worst. read more

And even called me a few minutes before to get me coffee . He had the bike , gear and snacks . We did a great mountain bike ride that day . Afterwards he even bought us lunch at a local spot . The person helping me was very rude. I had gotten a flat tire and needed a tube. They gladly sold me the tube for $10.00 wich I felt was a little pricey. I fixed it my self, as I carry tools to do so, but when I requested to use their bike pump I was told it would be a $10.00 charge to air upmy tire! I was appalled! I forgot that I hadn't finished this review. I went in last May; same day as Bay to Breakers 2016. I was in town to celebrate my graduation the day before, and was woefully unprepared to cycle around San Francisco. These guys were extremely helpful and friendly! They did a quick tune on my bike since I had driven in down from Reno, and I bought some bike shorts from them (still my favorite bike shorts to this day!). Whenever I'm in San Francisco again, I'll definitely swing by. If they treat everyone as well as they treated me, I'd recommend them to everyone in the bay area! read more

Marcel and Brian are nice guys...no question. My complaint, however, is not regarding their knowledge or friendliness, but their lack of business acumen and customer service. I went into High Trails expecting to support my local bike shop, and to purchase an American brand high end bike. Both equally important to me. My budget was $3,000. On my first visit to High Trails, a current customer came in who apparently had dropped off his bike for work two weeks prior and hadn't received any update. He rudely interrupted us, was extremely irate and shouted at Marcel, explaining that if his bike wasn't ready by the end of day he wanted a refund. This probably should have been my first inclination that High Trails wasn't very organized, but when people shout it comes off irrational so I continued with my business. I purchased a Specialized Sirrus 2015 bike in November, 2014 from High Trails. Brian showed me on the Specialized website that my bike was on back-order, but the ETA release date was early January, 2015. I was explicit and very clear that if the bike would arrive in January then waiting two months wouldn't be a big deal. In early January 2015 I didn't hear from High Trails, so I followed up with a friendly e-mail. Brian wrote back and explained that the new release date for my bike was the end of January 2015. He told me he checked the Specialized website every day for a release date, which I thought was highly inefficient. Also, if this was the case I was confused why I hadn't received any update. I probably should have just canceled my order then, but since he was friendly enough I decided to be patient. The last week of January 2015 I still hadn't heard High Trails, so I followed up again with another e-mail. Brian wrote back and told me that the new release date was the end of February, and he was leaving for a 10 day vacation. I wrote back explaining that I'm a busy person who needs a bike to commute. Not having a bike was not only a financial burden (extra commuting cost), but also if there was a comparable bike that was available then I would be open to a different bike. I unsurprisingly didn't hear back from Brian, but then eventually Marcel called me back and tried to locate a bike for me. He found a similar frame, but it was considerably more expensive than what I had budgeted. Marcel told me that my bike was now on back-order and it looked like possibly early March 2015, nearly four months after I purchased my bike! I immediately asked for a refund. Complaints ... 1. Why, as the customer, am I supposed to follow-up? 2. Why does High Trails not have a better supplier/dealer relationship with Specialized that is more transparent? Explaining that "there's nothing we can do" isn't a sufficient response. From a customer perspective it's actually infuriating. 3. I am not the type of person who expects anything for free, but I'm a little surprised that there was at no time a proposed incentive to keep me happy. Complete failure in my opinion. Bottom-line ... be prepared to wait for your bike and/or service with an excuse and smile. Expect zero follow-up. read more

Came in to get my rear dérailleur hanger aligned and the torque of my crank arm bolt checked because of a clicking noise. After fixing this and test riding my bike they found that my front dérailleur needed some adjustment and that the clicking noise persisted. After several test rides including disassembling and re-greasing the crankset, bottom bracket, cassette, and seat-post they finally got rid of the clicking noise. These guys really go out of the way to help their customers and make sure that their next bike ride are as pleasant and safe as possible. read more
