When we came in, the owner was incredibly helpful and took the time to answer all of our questions about Urtopia bikes without any pressure. We were both able to take the bike out for a spin around the neighborhood, which really helped us feel confident in our decision--it was an easy yes for us. One of the bikes wasn't immediately available in the color we wanted, but when we came back the next day, both bikes were assembled and ready to go. Bought my bike (specialized como) here 7 years ago, Fred helped me figure which one was best for my wants and to be honest at the time I thought I was maybe "getting sold" on a more expensive bike than I probably needed. Fast forward to now and close to 8000 miles later and I am extremely happy with the purchase. It was definitely the bike that best fit my needs and every time I go back, which is rarely, they have taken good care of me. I had the motor replaced under warranty, few services, repairs etc. Today I needed a new tire, new inner tube and new chain, arrived with no appointment and was out of there 30 mins later. I had a not so great experience looking for bikes so far, and just stumbled into Velocipede during a walk. Fred was beyond helpful. I tried 4 or 5 bikes and the one I liked the most was not available at that location in my size, nor was the helmet. He had both of them in the store the next day and the bike fully tuned up. I'm a total Noob when it comes to road bikes and he and the other staff members were super patient with me, explaining everything and what I would want, never once coming off as condescending or annoyed at my many amateur questions. They even laughed at all of my terrible jokes which is deserving of a 5 star review in itself I really felt like I had formed a relationship with the staff and feel comfortable going back there with any questions or issues with my new bike! Brought my mountain bike in with a busted spoke and dented rims, and knew I was headed toward a new set of wheels. The owner had planned to examine my existing rear wheel and hub to determine compatibility with the new wheelset he was recommending. If needed, he was going to take my freehub body off the old wheel and transplant it to the new wheelset. I guess they didn't feel like following that plan, because they instead just charged me for a new freehub body in addition to the new wheels. Why would they sell a wheelset that is not compatible with my bike? Communication is very poor too. If there was some reason they could not use my old freehub body, they didn't bother to share it. Nobody in there ever seems to know what's going on, and not once did I receive a phone call with updates during the repair. Had to hound them for information every step of the way. read more

Overall pretty nice selection of stuff especially when compared to a lot of the other shops in SF. That's probably the only thing going for them, the size and selection of their shop. Reviews are pretty accurate of the "service" you can expect to receive at this shop. I've been to bike shops all over the west coast and bc, canada and this is probably the shop I've had the worst experience at. How does a local shop have worse service than a shop that is owned and run by Vail?? Stereotypical holier than thou bike shop employees can be found here, so if you enjoy being talked down to, this might be the shop for you. Personally, I'd rather take my chances on finding the parts and services I need on market street than support this mill. Should be 1 star but I'm feeling charitable. read more

Overall it's a decent bike store. Most of the staff are very nice. However, one day when I picked up my bike, a middle aged Asian American staff kinda gender discriminated me by saying "all women bike like that....which is wrong..." And gave me a very uncomfortable laugh to me and to his coworkers. My first thought is "wait, don't tell me I'm being gender discriminated, because the other staff just so nice"... but it is what it is... Let me start out by saying that I've been involved in cycling on and off for the past 20 years. It's an expensive hobby/sport, but there is a wonderful, caring community when you meet the right people. I've been off the bike for some time now, and decided recently a good way to get re-invested would be to buy an entry level bike (with a nice frame) and upgrade it as a project. As with anything mechanical you'll constantly find yourself in need of tiny tool and parts as the project progresses, which is to be expected. I called Velocipede this afternoon to buy a small, $5 part, with the intention of ordering more as things progress (I have my eye on a $2k wheel set right now for example). I spoke to Fred on the phone, and he was curt about it. Whatever, it's for a $5 part. I went to pick it up and since this is my first time working on a bike with disc brakes, I had a relatively simple question about the compatibility of Shimano and SRAM components involved in my rebuild. Fred did not seem to understand my questions, and kept interrupting me to guess at what my question was. Finally, while I was trying to explain, one of the bike mechanics interrupted with the simple explanation. Still, Fred talked over them to question me and add his own accusatory explanation ("I asked you this! If you had just told me...") The entire time I felt like I was being talked down to, and made to feel like I wasn't making any sense. It was so condescending for a very reasonable question about bike components, to the point where I was taken aback. It's easy to just pick another shop in town when you live in a major city, but these guys were close to me and in a great neighborhood. Super bummed I didn't find a good fit here. Listen, there's a clear pattern in the negative reviews here though. Fred is terrible to deal with. I think he's the owner, and if that's the case, step back and stop being the face of your company. You're hurting your business and costing yourself tons in the process. To the business manager, Alex, who is responding to a lot of these reviews: You're doing yourself more harm than good. Trying to paint your customers in a bad light (often accusatory too) because of issues with your service is such a bad call. I spent my 20's bartending, and I know very well the customer isn't always right, but gaslighting them isn't the move. read more

Perhaps my mistake was revealing the number of shops and bikes I'd tried out already, or that I didn't know exactly what kind of bike I wanted, or I'm open to spending quite a bit as long as it's _worth it_. The visit stared out well enough, talking through what I wanted, coming up with three options. I took the first two rides out, everything is great, though when I said good things about the Caledonia, comparing it positively to my custom Kestrel build that was stolen, Fred basically said my old bike wasn't a "real bike" which seemed harsh. He'd also called it "heavy" when I gave its 16.45lb curb weight. Each of the bikes I rode that day weighed more. I ride a block or two on the third and find the front derailleur won't shift. I come back and explain, and Fred says, "yeah, it's a new build, battery needs to be charged," and puts the bike away. I'm sort of taken aback, thinking, surely there are other SRAM batteries in this shop, but don't want to sound like a dick. I ask, "anything else I should ride?" "Not really." A friend texts me that there is one bike ($12k) I have to try while I'm there, so I ask. "I know you're not seriously considering it, so I can't let you ride it." I was riding $6000 bikes that day, if you seriously believe your line, said multiple times that day, "once you ride it you can't say no," why wouldn't you let me ride it? Walking away I realized they let me take out that third bike without checking that the derailleurs worked. Crazy. I'm kind of bummed because they have great bikes for sale there, but they basically made me feel like crap. I had a similar experience here a couple years ago, so felt writing a review is warranted. read more

Absolutely horrible and very DANGEROUS service they provide, and they have no knowledge of what they actually sell. They sold SWorks Vias Handle bar saying it would fit my Sworks Tarmac. Brought the bike on Saturday and was promised the bike would be ready on Tuesday. That's fine I understand they are busy. Tuesday afternoon I called and asked what time I should head over to pick up, and they said they haven't even started and will get to it when they feel like it. Their actual words were "It really depends on how busy we are and how many walk ins we would have today. Not sure when we will get to it..." Wow, ok. Called before they close and they said they are not going to finish today. After 2 days picked up my bike and they taped my handlebar uneven and looked weird Went on a ride the following day to a hill near my place and while I was coming down the hill, my handlebar tilted forward almost had me falling. If I was doing 30 to 40 mph, I wouldn't have time to react. THAT"S VERY DANGEROUS. Called the shop and asked what they did to my bike and wanted to see if there was anything I could do to fix it simply, but they said "Ughh, just bring it over and I'll check" Went to the shop in the afternoon, the guy said I fixed it and brought it back out after few minutes, and I put some pressure on it and it tilts again. Apparently, you have to have Venge stem for these handlebars, and they all had no clue about it. Apparently they are Specialized certified bike shop. So I had to return the handlebar and they tried to charge me for the use of handlebar. Well they did charge me over $200 for the tape because they had to replace my tape. Disastrous place.!!! read more

There was a manual pump directly in front of the cash register available for anyone to use. Decided to buy a tube to take home & do the repair myself. Reasonably priced. I ordered a bike for my daughter and a helmet on the store's website on July 23 and once the order was confirmed it gave me a pick up date of July 29. After waiting an additional week I tried calling to check on order status (without answer) and emailing the store without response. I went into the store August 27 to inquire about the status of the order and got a strange look/response that they don't get that bike in from the distributor and that it's a problem with the website. Not any sorry for inconvenience, offer to make anything right, explanation of why they didn't proactively reach out to me to refund an order they can't fulfill. I asked them to cancel the order and refund which two store clerks said they couldn't do and would have to wait for someone else not present. I did receive the refund but what a terrible experience. I've spent a good deal of money here on my own bike and get treated like a moron for expecting an online order to be fulfilled. My bad! I'll try other stores in the future and suggest you do the same. read more

It took me 5 trips here and several months to have my bike tuned up. They failed to properly order my part after 6 weeks in the shop, and I had to ride it to work broken. They failed to diagnose the problem with my bike until my 2nd time bringing it in, then failed to reattach my inner chainring properly while replacing it. The screws fell out 10 miles into a ride. Atrocious. Dangerous and foolish place to take your bike. Do not recommend. Talked to the owner after my 5th trip there, he said their staff turned over and they are struggling to find anyone to do their repairs. Explains the quality of service I had... Oh yeah and my chain broke in half 1 week after my 5th trip there. At that point I took it elsewhere. PS - they were never wearing masks when I walked in read more

I can't speak for other bicycle services, so I'm only sharing my experiences at this shop of purchasing a Gocycle (folding electric bike) for folks interested in these bikes/this shop. My interactions with Fred, the owner, since last fall when I bought this bike have been disappointing and became more challenging over time. I was interested in getting a folding electric bike for a 10 mile commute. Fred dismissed the less expensive bicycles and talked about how amazing Gocycles are and highly encouraged me to get one. So I paid $4300 for a Gocycle including commuter accessories. Unfortunately this Gocycle had issues with the battery and it was only going a max of 9 miles on charge. I was given a replacement which now gets about 11 miles on a charge (much less than what Gocycle indicates, though shortened of course because of SF hills). Throughout this time, Fred was angry with Gocycle, cursed them out in front of me because of their lack of response and how problematic these bicycles are. Strange since just a few weeks prior he glorified these bikes. This is complicated by Fred being "the only one who knows anything about them" as I've been told by other shop staff. I picked up on a considerable lack of professionalism early in this process. He had poor physical boundaries and repeatedly touched my arm when trying to get me to buy the gocycle. When issues began to arise with the bike, he even suggested that I meet him elsewhere outside of the shop after hours. Inappropriate behavior to a woman customer. After a month of having the bike, it was clear the bike was a headache for him and his communication became avoidant and defensive. Fast forward to the spring. The back light went out and I reached out to Fred- no response. Then the bike had a major electrical failure (pop, hiss, no power) and I dropped it off to the shop on May 8. Staff there didn't know the plan and I had no updates for over a week, so I called the shop and was told it was going to then be sent to Gocycle directly so they can work on it. Fred said that he would call me back to give me more information about the issue, no call back. Call a week later, he said that he would call me back the next week, no call. I then waited 5 weeks to call back, giving the benefit of the doubt. I was told by a staff that Fred would call me that night. No call back. During this time, the shop offered me a gocycle to use. It had an unstable wheel and was not able to hold a charge. Staff who gave this bike to me did not know how the bike worked and could not assist. Fred never called me back about this. The last bit of trust in this shop was lost at this point when they gave me a bike which could be a safety issue. After 2 months, I then contacted Gocycle who said that the bike was fixed "some time ago" and it was already returned to the shop. I called the shop who said that they didn't know and had to wait until Fred told them if it was ready. Staff called me back to say it was ready. When I picked it up from the shop no one could tell me what the issue was to cause the power failure, nor what work had been done on it. As other reviewers have mentioned, I felt the vibe of this shop of trying to get $$. There's no profit to velocipiede to handle these warranty issues, so it's not a priority for them -- though unbelievable when you drop $4300 on a bicycle. I bought the higher end light kit for the bike (no lights come on the bike), and Fred didn't realize the higher end rear light doesn't fit the rack. So, I even then had to buy a whole other light set (front and rear), and after spending $4300, Fred made me buy the whole set, not just one light. Really? I spoke to Gocycle throughout this time about issues with the bike since the shop didn't take responsibility, and even they said that the shop should have worked with me on that. Gocycle encouraged me to go elsewhere for service. I recommend the same. Too many other good bike shops in this town. read more

This shop supposedly carries some of the "nicer" brands such as S-Works and Cervelo. My gf was looking to replace her bike and we came here to check out the store since they are a Specialized dealer. We were ignored the entire time in the store, almost seems like you need to "beg" an employee just to talk to them. Arrogance and pretentiousness runs EXTREMELY high at this shop. Definitely will spend my bucks for an S-Works elsewhere.... read more

I called these guys last minute and they were able to see me right away despite all bike shops being super busy these days. I Echo with a lot of the yelpers here.. very bad service... A couple of guys who have absolutely zero interest in seeing people are running the shop. They were not talking properly to the customers, they were not happy to see people in the shop and simply ****. We went to do a test ride for wing bikes, requested fro the wing bike's page, so these folks should be getting paid for it or have some other agreement with the wing bikes, but it looked like they were doing it as a free service and people are exploiting them (I do not care about the internals, but I expect some response from the team sitting in the shop) read more

I don't understand how some people can be so blind to the issues with this cyclery. A friend and I went to take a look at some bikes - he was interested in an e-bike, and I was interested in some high-end road bikes. Right off the bat, they were overcharging by a gross amount for the e-bike, and when my friend mentioned that he thought it was a little expensive, they immediately shut themselves off to any further communication. They became uninterested in talking to me about the high-end road bikes I was looking for as well. My friend and I would each be able to buy several dozen of the bikes that we were interested in, at their inflated prices, without issue. All I can say is: these people are not truly passionate about cycling, they are passionate about ripping off clueless consumers and lining their own pockets. There are many other great shops out there that provide top-notch customer service purely out of genuine passion for the products that they sell. Never visiting this shop again, and will let all others know to steer clear as well. read more

I see a lot of people have had great customer service experiences with Velocipede. I have had a pretty bad customer experience that I wanted to share. I will write this as objectively as possible, in the order of the events that happened. On July 28, I purchased a $13.99 bell from Velocipede. Frederick, the owner, helped me install the bell at no charge which I appreciated at the time. Frederick threw the box away, never asked me if I wanted the original packaging. Within a week, I realized that the bell did not work well on my scooter, so I emailed on VelocipedeSF@gmail.com August 6 that I wanted to return the bell. No response. A week later, I called the store and was told they would look into it and call me back. No call back. Today on September 7 I took the bell into the store. Frederick, the owner, was there and he said he would not take the bell as a return because when I had purchased the bell, he had recommended that I purchase the Spurcycle bell, a $60 bell, but I had chosen the cheaper bell because I don't have a budget for the more expensive bell. He claimed that I only complained about the ergonomics about the bell I purchased because he had shown me the nicer bell. I ended up getting in an argument with the owner and pretty emotionally worked up. Finally, Frederick said he would charge me the $5 installation fee and take the bell back. I am disappointed mainly because of the low responsiveness of the story, to emails and calls. The way I see it, if Velocipede Cyclery can't even resolve a $13.99 bell, I don't have much trust in Velocipede Cyclery being able to resolve issues if I purchase a more expensive item like one of their bikes. As action items, I would like to see the following changes to the store policy: 1) Even if a customer asks you to help install an item, offer to provide the packaging. 2) Explain the return policy. Currently it's not even written on the receipt. (I have photos as evidence) 3) Be more responsive. If a store associate says to the customer they will call the customer back, then call the customer back. You shouldn't need the customer to drive into the store after a month to finally get a response. read more

We visited this store based on the recommendations and good reviews. I will admit that we aren't regular bikers. But there is something to be said about being insulting and condescending! He said 'you don't look like you can ride a Hybrid bike with 50 lb weight' from the first sentence he kept pushing Electric bikes and criticized that my husband should learn to ride a bike first. When we asked the price of one of the bikes, he said 'if you have been following the news, there is something called a Pandemic that we are dealing with.. bikes are in huge demand' I didn't want to be reminded of the pandemic by a bike sales guy! Seriously!!! This shop is very elitist, snarky and condescending! We went to multiple bike shops across the city - Valencia, Mike's, Sports Basement finally New Wheel. I have bare minimum knowledge about bikes and I wanted to try and fix my bike on my own at home.. Didnt work out so well. I wish that I could learn more to be able to do it myself, however, I will from now on leave it to the experts. Fred helped with my bike rear tire and my front shift gear. It was an extremely easy process. I called ahead and dropped my bike off within 10 minutes. After a few hours, it was already ready for pick up! I'd had high hopes for what I'd assumed would be our local, neighborhood-friendly bike shop. But after the tire exploded on my cargo bike, literally five minutes after they'd "fixed" it--for the third time in days!--, I realized my error. (Luckily, my kid was not on the bike at the time)! Came to check-out the new local bike shop. Christian and team were amazing in helping me figure out a all the parts/equipment for a new Yepp seat to tote the toddler around. We went over about 3 different configurations so that I could still use the old panniers I had from a previous rack. And definitely felt they were helping me consider all the pros and cons of different configurations. Good selection of helmets and other bicycle accessories as well, we bought a cute helmet for the toddler. My husband also got a bicycle tuneup. Overall, it's really the great service that stands out about Velocipede. Definitely recommend to anyone in Mission Bay, Dogpatch, Potrero and surrounding neighborhoods. read more
