Our bikes were incredibly high quality and well-suited to our needs (two gravel bikes and one fat tire mountain e-bike), the booking process was fast and easy over the phone, and even though they could have charged us for two full days since we passed the 24 hour mark they didn't. I arrived in Hawaii with my bike yesterday evening and when I assembled the bike today the shifting was messed up beyond my ability to correct it. After a quick Google search I found myself at Mountain Road and Cycle. One could describe this as a hole in the wall bike shop, but what it may have lacked in razzle dazzle it more than made up for in all the areas that count. I was greeted by the shop's friendly owner, Matt, who I would later learn is a former pro mountain biker. Matt worked on my bike as I waited, replacing a cable and making all the necessary adjustments in a thorough and detailed manner. Prior to giving me my bike back he took it for a test ride, a key step often over looked by some shops. I really appreciated the attention that I received and the friendly atmosphere at the shop. As I waited I quickly realized that the great experience that I was having was no fluke. A number of customers came in as I was waiting and I could tell that each of them were big fans of Mountain Road and Cycle. So if you find yourself on The Big Island drop by this great shop if for no other reason than to say hi to a great guy. read more

Matt is an awesome guy. I was able to rent a Juliana Santa Cruz for the weekend and it performed fantastically. Most experiences with mountain bike rentals I've had in the past pale in comparison. I recommend supporting these guys especially if you want to do the Mauna Kea trail. You can fly into town now which is super close to the bike shop. I'll add to the unanimous complimentary reviews about the shop. It is located behind the restaurant/brew pub and is has just about everything any type of cyclist could need from road to track to mountain to racer biking. There are rentals and cyclists should take advantage of the great riding routes by stopping in. They do top notch repairs and reassembled my bike for me after I had it shipped over from the mainland. Great guys and a sleepy supervising black lab to keep the pace just right. Addendum: After several months of riding my old Trek was starting to ride a bit rough and get gummed up and I took it back to Matt for an overhaul. He did a thorough once over and adjusted some things. This would normally have been the end of the transaction, but he then did a test ride outside the shop and explained some things and had me jump on and give me opinion. He then took the bike in and on the spot fine tuned it to my liking. This is a bike oasis in the desert so to speak and I hope others visit the shop for any and all biking needs that arise. He was jammed up due to working on bikes for an area triathalon and still squeezed me in. Great place with a patient staff for all levels of riding. read more

Mountain Road Cycles is the kind of bike shop that brings a tear to the eye of serious touring cyclists. Talk about in "road lore"- a semi-secret "fabled" bike shop, tucked away on the first turnoff when you get into an awesome town, right behind (no joke, this is actually not a lie) the Big Island Brewhouse. I mean, common. It just doesn't get any better than this! Not once, but twice I have had to limp into this gem of a bike shop. I've toured the entire Big Island twice in the last two years, and for some reason suffered some pretty serious bike failures on the stretch of road from Honoka'a to Waimea (once was a series of flats with no cause+a stripped bolt on rear rack, the other was for a busted freewheel on our beloved tandem). In both cases, Matt not only saved the day but dropped everything to make sure we were able to pedal out in good order. awesome service from a guy who really cares about bikes (take a look at some of the "relics and oddities" up on the walls), in a shop that shares the parking lot with a brewery. If you are in Waimea, make sure you stop by the shop. If you are touring the big island, pray that if (heaven forbid..)you should suffer mechanical failure that you do so within reach of Mountain Road Cycles. And make sure you are thirsty when you get there. read more
