Bilbos is the best pizza in Kalamazoo by far!! Cheesy sticks and dill dip 10/10 !! Good beer too

$19 for breadsticks with dill dip. It was okay but not as good as it used to be in East Lansing. I have made this at home for a fraction of the cost. The dill dip is just a thick version of ranch dressing with onion flakes in it. We ordered online for pickup. Oddly, we were asked to sign the receipt so they could ask for a tip again for no service. Do people really change their minds if they hit no tip the first time? If anything, you are wasting my time. Do they do this to people who tip who can then switch it to no tip? If I owned this business, I'd stop this. I already answered the question once and there is no reason for me to change my mind. My bartender made me a not so good LIT, but quickly made it better with a different drink, she was kind and attentive great service! 2.5-3 stars We took a detour on our way to Michigan to stop here because a TikTok clip was saying how great it was, I'll assume it was a local or employee because that's what I would do. I'll go with the cons first. We went at a very slow time of day and the attention from the server was slow but still kind. We ordered our food got our drinks and they came by once after we ordered. The mozzarella sticks were baked and not deep-fried like your typical mozzarella sticks. The chef salad was already coated with their house dressing while my friend asked for ranch on the side but she ate it anyway. Being a Lord Of The Rings fan I was really excited to see what this place looked like. There was some artwork on the wall and a couple backlit framed art. Other than that and a table that was all. It was like a very watered down, attempt to change an Irish pub into a Lord of the rings themed restaurant. On with the pros. I had a house salad and it was probably a bag of salad from a store, but it was still fresh and hit the spot ok. I ordered an expensive mini personal pan pizza, which was three baby slices. I will say that it tasted very fresh, but it was not your typical pizza mozzarella, which was a little thin and dry. It was delicious nonetheless. The bathroom was clean. I can see how this place would be good for large parties or families that want to dine in because it is roomy and hey, locals are the best patrons right? Overall, I'm not disappointed with the stop because the scenic route we took to get there was well worth it even though many of the small towns had apparently went through some major storms and stop lights being out of power. read more

Came to bilbo's on a Saturday before a WMU hockey game and it was the perfect place for a pregame dinner. We had 10 in our group and it took us about 10 minutes to get seated. For reference, we arrived at 4pm and the hockey game started at 6. We felt like this was a good amount of time. They seem to be short staffed right now but our server was apologetic about the wait and we felt like she still did great with how many tables she had. They have a couple of in house beers on tap. I got the raspberry wheat ale. I didn't totally love it but it wasn't the worst. We all split 2 family size salads, a large order of cheese sticks, and got about 4 medium sized pan pizzas for the table. Lots of options/toppings and crust types so everything was totally different. The spinach pan pizza with wheat crust was awesome! I would definitely order this again. The cheese bread was also delicious, especially dipped in ranch. Although the pizza was absolutely beautiful, it was equally tasteless. The sauce was just plain tomato sauce from a can. The pepperoni was amazingly sparse, the mushrooms were canned, and the green peppers were in huge rings and strips, rather than smaller pieces which would have flavored each bite. The cheese was nice and gooey, but again, tasteless. This was the worst and most expensive pizza we've ever had. Frozen pizzas have more flavor. I was super pleasantly surprised by this place. We were visiting the Kalamazoo area, and looking for interesting places to eat. As I had a couple of teenage boys with me, I thought the novelty of a hobbit themed restaurant might offer a few laughs. The surprising part was that the pizza is really good. It was just the right amount of greasy without being disgusting. The pizza and salad were both fresh and flavorful, and left nothing to complain about. The service was good. This place is so nostalgic for us! Back in the day we would go to the East Lansing location at Michigan State when it was open. It has now since closed and it has been many, many years since it had been in business over there. We had heard there was a Kalamazoo location and finally had the chance to trek over here for a taste of memories. They had a decent drink and beer list. We tried the peanuts and popcorn which was a dark porter full of crackerjack flavor. It was very good. We also had the Bilbo raspberry wheat which was fine. We started with the cheese bread sticks and a side of dill dip. The sticks were good. The dough was hot and full of flavor. The true winner of the evening was of course the dill dip! It is so amazing, if I had been returning home sooner, I would have ordered several for the road. That is a blast from the past taste for me, and it is so amazing good, I would love their secret recipe! It is so creamy and full of dill, it is a great dip with bread, veggies, pizza crust! Sooo good. We had a large pan pizza with spinach. It is a decent pizza. I would not say the absolute best in the world, but worth getting anytime we are in the area. It was cooked perfectly and was perfect for a family of four. If we lived closer, I would have ordered the extra large for leftovers, since the large was eight pieces. I was disappointed they did not offer their whole menu. One child wanted pasta, and they did not have any pasta, so we opted for the mozzarella sticks instead. They did not seem homemade, just frozen store bought, nothing special. I had a favorite sandwich that they sell there, but since we already had so much food I did not have the chance to try it again. I have mixed feelings about the food. The restaurant was kind of difficult to find at first but it's in a good spot. We ordered stix with dill dip and pizza sauce, medium pizza with pepperoni, Diet Coke and a Blue Moon. We had a choice of white or wheat dough for the stix and pizza, we went with white. Pizza was decent, not much sauce I prefer more sauce than what was on the pizza. The dough felt dense like heavy. Heavier than what I am accustomed to. My daughter loved it. I went here on my way home and decided that it looked like a good place outside of the building. It's also very close to Western Washington Michigan University. Once I walked in there were probably about 4 maybe 5 people in the whole place eating or just having a drink. The place is very large inside and dark with a cold type of atmosphere in it unless it's like later in the evening. The waitress was very nice and polite. I have never been there before. I'm sure I won't be back again either. I found that the menu had a number of different kinds of pizzas and a few other dinner items as well. So I finally decided which pizza to get. I was absolutely sure that I had ordered a regular crust pizza which I was offered white or wheat . Anyway after the pizza came out it was not what I had expected it to be. It was apparently a deep dish pizza with lots of cheese and some pepperoni as well as a little bit of sausage and a bit of a thin layer of sauce on the bottom. Well when I got the bill I almost fell off the chair. I had ordered what I thought was a medium regular crust pizza and it would be around $17.00 plus tax and tip. Went I saw the bill I was really glad I was sitting down. The pizza cost me $27.00 and with the tip ended up over $30.00 and I was drinking ice water. I was like in disbelief that a pizza that wasn't loaded with lots of items on it would cost that much money! Yes, it was good but definitely not $30.00 good! Now I understand why so many college students are going broke if they decide to go out for a pizza and a drink especially if they're drinking beer or alcohol they must easily go through probably $75.00 to well over a $100.00 easily just to go out and eat and drink at this place. I just don't recommend this place if you're living on a budget of any kind especially now with everything costing so much this place can empty your wallet fast! I don't recommend this place for a family type meal or someplace that you are hoping to have a family type experience either. It's fairly darker and more of a sports bar atmosphere inside and I didn't see any children proportion size options for children on the menu either. We gave him a nice tip, but he was a deer in the headlights. This wasn't his failure, but management failure. We ordered two pizzas, pan and thin crust. Neither of them were anything to get excited about. I ordered spaghetti and it was horrible. Dry and burnt. Prices were not bad if the food was good, but I wouldn't go back. The dining room is dated and not clean. The blinds were filthy, and the table was very sticky. Friend found this for us to go to after a hockey game at the Wings event center. It was a nice little hidden gem I wasn't expecting. Fun theme for any Lord of the Rings fan. We got salad - pretty average. Cocktails - these were fun. And pizza. The pizza was good. I got the gluten free crust which is usually pretty flimsy on the best of the days. Their pizzas are always delicious, and they're one of the only pizza places I've ever been to that offers a whole wheat crust (which is amazing!) in the country! Attending WMU in the late 70's/early 80's, Bilbos was the place I hung out the most. Just stopping to grab a slice & a pop was a highlight and I never knew who I would run into as it was very popular. Fast forward nearly 40 years and I still have a soft spot for Bilbos. I used to frequent their Portage location at least once a week for their delicious salads. The dressing is so good. But I'm embarrassed to admit it has been about 4 years since I had one of their pizzas. Friday evening we were on our way downtown Kalamazoo and I had a graving for a pizza. Bilbos was on our way so we stopped by. We were seated promptly; however, I'm kicking myself for saying we wanted a booth. The booths are the most uncomfortable things I have ever sat in. The backs are so straight that I had deja vu of my piano teacher telling me "sit up straight" and the bottoms are so hard it was impossible to get comfortable. Our server was very nice and brought our wine quickly. But after the first sip, I knew immediately wine was not at the top of their list of good quality. Kicking myself for not ordering a beer. I was happy to see they offer a thin crust, as my older self vs. my college self, has to watch my carbs. We shared the Dragon Feast, which came with pepperoni, ham, sausage, and hickory smoked bacon. We opted for the stone ground wheat crust. The sauce brought back a flood of memories of why I loved Bilbos. There was definitely plenty of meat on the Dragon Feast.
