My visit yesterday was the first time I've been to a professional salon in years, and now I'm hooked. Mr Lawrence took the time to breakdown the health of my hair and recommended what I should and should not do to my hair. I was tired of fighting the natural hair fight, so I put a kiddie perm in my hair, Mr Lawrence knew everything that I had done. He encouraged me to trust him and to transition back to my natural hair. After being in the DC area for 26 years, I can honestly say that I trust him with my hair. So, Marissa is THE stylist to see if you are looking for someone who actually takes proper care of your hair before/after styling it. I had a hairstylist for 5 years who was great at straightening hair, but I couldn't help but notice that my scalp was often dry and that my hair often felt brittle. Not only did I need for my hair to feel healthier, but I decided to go natural as well. I had a consultation with Marissa and explained how frustrating my previous experience was, and she proved that she could immediately figure out what my unique hair type needed. She also showed me how much of a perfectionist she is while straightening my hair. I forgot I no longer had a relaxer because my hair was still laid! After my first visit, I kid you not, I noticed stark differences in 1) The way my hair was trimmed, 2) How my hair stands felt from root to end, and 3) My biggest concern, my SCALP! I never knew what a trim was really supposed to look like, so I never complained when I wasn't "feeling it". But when Marissa trimmed my hair, somehow I knew it was a perfect trim. And I joked with her about how good it was, even though I couldn't specifically tell you what she did differently. Also, in the two weeks between getting my hair done and going back for my second visit, my hair didn't feel brittle at all, and I had no flakes in my scalp. At this point, I was so annoyed that I hadn't found Marissa earlier because my previous stylist made me feel that the issue with my scalp was an actual "scalp issue" and that there was nothing she could do about it. Enough said. Last point: It wouldn't be fair to describe Marissa as just a stylist. She is simply an artist, which is what you get when you have someone who is highly intelligent, a perfectionist, and serious about their craft. After having bad experiences with black stylists in DC (overcharging for subpar services, being scissor happy, or just not knowing how to deal with natural hair), I was excited to try Marissa after seeing so many good reviews. Plus, I checked out her IG and she claims to specialize in natural hair. When I arrived to my appointment (on-time), she was running behind with her clients. I had to wait about 30 minutes which wasn't a big deal since she came over and apologized and let me know. When I finally get in the chair, I tell her I would like a TRIM not a haircut. I realize my hair was color damaged and she asked me three times if I wanted to cut the color out. Three times I said no, just a trim. She also asked if I wanted a deep condition, to which I agreed. I should have asked the price but more on that later. Flash forward to her finishing up and turning the chair around for me to look at my hair. I had a few curls and my roots were poofy and looked like they hadn't been touched with the flat-iron! Not only that, she still cut 4-5 inches off my hair when I repeatedly asked for just a trim. To top it off, I was charged almost $200 for a style that was flat and fizzy as soon as I walked outside (literally!) I had to restraighten my hair that same night for an event. Maybe she was rushing because she was behind but the results were extremely disappointing for the expensive prices! As a stylist knowing I was a first-time customer, she should have walked me through what she was doing or asked questions about how I wanted my hair. My hair is natural but very easy to manipulate and straighten. I do a better job when I do it at home. I could have saved $200 for a terrible job!! I went here for this first time off a recommendation from a friend. I am so happy I made this decision. Bill is great- for a natural blow out. Marissa, is who I've been seeing currently though and I feel she really caters to natural hair! On my first appt I let her trim my hair which ended up completely correcting my damaged, dry, uneven natural hair. It was a dramatic cut in regards to length, but what I realized is this was necessary to achieve the consistent curls I was looking for! I've been natural all my life meaning never had a chemical straightener put in my hair. I've always struggled with maintaining my hair, whether I'm heat styling or keeping it curly I tend to neglect my hair in away that causes major damage. So fast foward to meeting Marissa, she educated me on dangerous habits that I fall into and the right products to use for my past shoulder length mane. Once I went back to caring for my hair after Marissa's hands graced it. My hair completely came back to life, no dead ends and my curls looked straight outta a bomb YouTube tutorial vid. I am starting to think that DC black hair stylists just don't know how to do hair. I keep trying these elitist, upscale hair salons only to be severely disappointed and nearly penniless after paying the ridiculous prices they charge. I was styled by Bonita. When I called to schedule my appointment, I was told that all of the stylists were experienced in caring for hair in transition (from relaxed to natural). I later realized that this was a lie. When I explained to Bonita that I was growing out my relaxer, she asked why and tried to convince me to do a "kiddie" perm on my edges. Why would I do that when my hair has already been damaged by chemicals? Not only that, but she even referred me to another stylist at the salon, Marissa, who she said "likes to style transitional hair." Unfortunately, Marissa was not in, so I was stuck with Bonita, who apparently DOES NOT like to style transitional hair. Once past that, I came to really enjoy Bonita's personality. She was friendly and comedic. However, when it came to the most important part, MY HAIR, she was a disappointment. She didn't examine my hair before shampooing it to see what I needed (deep conditioner, trim, protein treatment, etc.) and she didn't explain what products she was using during my shampoo. When I asked, she just glossed over the brand name and didn't expound on its benefits. When she finished straightening and curling my hair, it looked great--lots of body and shine. However, the curls she gave me were extremely loose, and with the rain and wind outside, I told her to curl it tighter because they were bound to fall. She made some comment to the effect of "I know what I'm doing" in a nice way, but no sooner had I left the salon did my hair fall flat. I asked her to re-curl it, and she obliged, but they still didn't stay. At the end of the day and $75 shorter, I looked as if I hadn't been to the salon in weeks. All this frustration with finding a stylist may just push me to go to beauty school to learn how to do hair myself. Meanwhile, I'll stick with Carol at Textures in Gaithersburg--the only stylist in the DC area so far who hasn't made me want to pull all my hair out after having it done. P.S. Last year I relocated to DC area and needed a hair stylist who was prompt, flexible in hours and creative - I found all qualities in my stylist Marissa at BL Salon. Shes amazing! Relaxed hair, natural hair, weaves and color are all her niche. The salon is inviting and comfortable. All things I cherish. every stylist there is professional, not your typical black salon with long wait times and attitudes. Natural Hair: Marissa will have your hair looking like you got a relaxer. Weaves: She uses the BEST quality hair and knows how to blend it. Weave isn't supposed to look like weave, mine didn't. Of course the prices are DC higher, you should expect that but the products used and efficiency of one head at a time, off sets some of that. Only downside, parking can be insane! But again, DC experience Ted so park and walk 3 blocks from parking garage we all need the exercise. read more

This is THE best color that I have ever gotten. Ya heard? I've gotten 120+ likes on Facebook because of the pic that Lynne took of the end results. And, random texts from friends saying how pretty my hair is. Not a bad feeling! Listen, ladies. This place is expensive. Let's get that out of the way... it's going to be the most unpleasant part about the review. Just be preeeparrrrrred ::Scar from Lion King voice:: for the dough that you'll be forking over. Cause it is going to be serious. I have very thick, natural and very dark hair. I was in the salon for about five hours. Natural shampoo and Styling: $80; Dry cut: $60; Full Color: $80; Highlights full: $200. *gulp* Very pricey, but I feel (and look) like a million bucks. I haven't felt this good in long time. And, when you are confident, others gain confidence in you. Not going to be affordable for everyone, but if you can do it, it is an investment in yourself. Your pretty will definitely be on fleek. I had an appointment with Samantha (Sam) yesterday at 5 PM. She was absolutely wonderful. My whole experience was. I walked in and was greeted with a smile and they even had cookies and chocolate covered strawberries. I grabbed a cookie and read O Magazine while I waited for my appointment. While I was waiting, I noticed that all of the women in there getting their hair done were leaving looking fantastic, so I knew this was the place for me. When Sam was ready for me, I sat down at the shampoo station. She took one look at my short-medium frizzy fro (I wear my hair naturally) and asked me what I use on my hair. After the informed consultation, she examined my scalp and recommended that I do a touchup texturizer (I had just wanted a cut to reshape my short bob curly fro but she convinced me I needed a touchup). She got to work on that and noticed that I had a really bad cold so she asked another stylist to make me some green citrus tea and brought me lots of tissues and set me up with a little table for all of my cold remedies, which was very sweet. After the texturizer she did a deep conditioning treatment, and even gave me a quick head massage!! And then the cut. Unlike other salons I've been to where they are more interested in talking to their friends on their blue tooth, Sam intensely examined all the angles of my hair and concentrated fully on the cut. She then styled it and it looked fantastic. While I was paying she also wrote down another cold remedy for me to try - grapefruit seed extract - to help get rid of my cold, and she recommended the conditioners I should use on my hair, which I went out and bought right away at the Ulta in Silver Spring, MD. She said I should come back to see her in 3 months, and I definitely will! I felt well-taken care of, and had the best salon experience I've ever had. Now, it was pretty pricey but definitely worth it since a woman's hair has a lot to do with how she feels about herself. read more

No one left out of there looking the same...everyone had a style that was suited for your face which I loved. And unlike most of the salon's I have been too I was not waiting because they cannot schedule thier appointments appropriately. In November 2015, I broke my arm and fractured my elbow, rendering me unable to touch my hair (even today) with my left arm. I was never great with caring for my hair, but my hair deteriorated rapidly after the injury. It was constantly dry and just a mess. After having enough of the struggle, I was pleasantly surprised to find a hair salon in my neighborhood that worked with natural hair (thanks fellow Yelp reviewers). I made an appointment with Marissa, who assessed and cut my hair very short, removing the damaged hair. A year later, under Marissa's monthly care, my hair has grown close to, if not slightly past, its previous length before. More importantly, my hair is healthy. I really appreciate the patience and expertise of Marissa- and my hair appreciates her as well. I look forward to another year and to exploring color in the next year. By the way, I must add that I never have a problem with excessively long waiting (see Shear Movement review). The one and only time I'd waited long was for about 30 minutes and it was due to something beyond the salon's control. So, I'm okay- things happen. Usually, I'm seen shortly after I arrive and I appreciate that. I despise long wait times and double/triple booking (HUGE pet peeve), for which too many black-oriented salons have been infamous (YES, I went there). It's tactless and unprofessional and I haven't stepped inside one like that in at least seven years. I don't mind paying more for my hair care if it means I can minimize the chance of chicken flying in my face while my hair is being done or someone talking to me like a child and taking my hard-earned money after the fact. They'll get me one time, because I was in a pinch. But, trust and believe I'll look like Buckwheat before they get another dime from me. My husband prefers my Afro, so it's a win for me, regardless. Anyway, I'm leaving a review to pay it forward- others' reviews helped me decide on Bill Lawrence Salon and Marissa, specifically. I hope to do the same. read more

ASK FOR MARISSA! You will not be disappointed. I'm natural, but wear my hair straight and she knows what she's doing. I also workout 5-6 times a week and my hair doesn't sweat out. My hair is probably about as healthy as it has ever been (recommendation: hydration treatments) and if I do want to wear it natural, my curls are still intact. Nice shop no questions about it, but the prices are a little too high! I don't have a relaxer and was charged $100 for a Wash, deep condition (extra $15), blow dry, and flat iron/curl. Now mind you usually at most salons you pay $100 for color, a relaxer, trim, something. While Marissa, did my hair and did a good job it definitely wasn't worth $100. If you have the money go for it, but if not then I would say go somewhere else. read more

What a treat! I needed my hair straightened for a job. Stylist Tayo washed, conditioned, blow dried, flat ironed and cut about an inch of my natural (4c, if you're into hair types) hair. We discussed hair products and maintenance along with our backgrounds. My finished hair had the "swang" and bounce of relaxed hair without the grease and smoky smell of a press and curl. My stylist is Marissa! She is excellent with hair care. My hair was very damaged from over processing with heat and relaxer. My hair is much thicker and shinier. I am originally from Boston and had trouble finding a great stylist . You will find that in DC alot of stylist can style hair, but do not pay attention to hair care as much which can eventually damage the hair over time. People stop and ask where I do my hair all the time. She offers great treatment and hair care advice. It is a little more expensive then other local salons, but you get what you pay for! I walk out satisfied with a head of healthy hair. I have visited other stylist before going to Marissa and my hair was not as healthy and well taken care of. I visited the Bill Lawrence Salon some time ago. My appointment was with Bill. Bill's a great guy and the salon was nice enough, but the hair styling was just "ok." During my appointment my hair was washed and loosely flat ironed. It was very dry and fly-away afterward, and didn't look like I had been to the salon at all. The prices are high, but I am willing to pay for great hair. I've had a tough time finding a really good stylist in DC. The best stylist I ever had was Rachel at Shapes Salon and Day Spa in Centreville, VA . It's a full service day spa, and their appts are always on time - always within 10 minutes or less. Plus they give every client a complimentary hand scrub during your shampoo. As for Bill Lawrence, the people are friendly, but the styling is average. read more

I nearly waited for my stylist 48minutes. When she did arrived she had Mac D's breakfast in her hand, went to the back to eat her breakfast and finally asked "are you ready" Not to mention she gave me a mullet hair cut! So the first time Bill straightened my hair, he slayed it. However, I have been on a no heat kick for the last 6 months, so decided to go to him for a curly cut and wash. I called to make sure they could do that, and I was told by the receptionist that Bill and Donna could. Well, I think there may have been a misunderstanding, cause Bill blew my hair out and cut it first. I initially was not mad about it, cause my hair need serious detangling and I figured that was probably the best way to do it. I then had it washed by Donna. She by far gives the best hair washes probably in all of D.C. Like my scalp is to another level of clean. I was in heaven until Bill tried to style it. Like the cardinal rule of 3C hair is what? Don't take your fingers through it when it's wet. He did, and left a nice build up of product for me to walk out of the salon with. By the time I got home, my hair I kid you not was a frizzy mane. Thank God I didn't have to be somewhere immediately following my appt, cause I ended up having to start over with styling on my own. After paying $95, that's not really how I pictured my evening. The cut is also not that great. I asked him to shape it but I guess when you blow dry it and cut it that way, that's shouldn't be expected. I am fairly new to the curly cutting procedures, so this is a lesson learned. So moral of the story, this is not a salon geared around curly styling. But if you want your hair to slay straight, got to Bill. He is fast and if I can tell you the compliments I got afterwards. Wish I could say the same for the curly technique. So back to Fiddleheads (the curly salon with the owner from hell) when I want a curly cut. read more

I got my hair cut yesterday by Tyo. She is wonderful. She was ready to take me 15 min before my appointment. She talked to me about what I wanted (color ...grey, cut into a bob and touch upthe bill $200.00not bad for all 3 services). Her assistant Jamie then introduced himself to me and based my scalp. He was very pleasant and conversational. Tyo then gave me the touch up and Jamie washed my hair. Once I was washed I returned to Tyos chair and she cut my hair. She hit it from every angle and worked it out. It looks so nice. The other customers thought it looked great. One lady even said it looks so good and perfect it look like a perfect weave! When I got home I realized the color did not take to some of my grey. I called Tyo and w/o hesitation she offered to credit me back my money or fix it on my next visit. I used to be a regular here, but stopped going because I was transitioning to natural, and my stylist, Bonita, did not do natural hair. I never understood the term "magic hands" until I met Bonita. My hair always looked great and it grew like crazy! Bonita was great about listening to what I wanted and giving her opinion. We worked well together, and I always left happy. The prices are definitely high, but I was willing to pay for the one-on-one service. I don't know if they do natural hair now, but I am definitely going to give them a call. I really found this place to be a gem among AA hair salons in the DC area, and I miss it. The cost may be off-putting to some (even me to be honest), but the results are amazing. I have been twice so far, after my best friend recommended me to her stylist, Bonita. Bonita is the first stylist to seem to have any investment in the health of my hair. She told me exactly what she felt would work for me and then proceeded to get it done. For a color, shampoo, cut and style, I paid $170 (which did make my heart stop for a second), but my hair looked and felt better than it has in YEARS. She gave me a great education on my hair - my texture(s), etc. She didn't refer any products, but was open to any questions that I had. She also encouraged me about my hair's potential. She even gave me tips on how I should style it at home myself in between visits. At this point, I can't afford to go to her as often as I would like.(But if money weren't a concern, I would be there on a weekly basis.) Before I even got in Bonita's chair, I was greeted by Donita, who has a really sunny personality and even offered fresh pastries and coffee. When I called to make my appointment, she was really engaging. I personally would recommend Bonita because she's the only person who has styled my hair, but I have never seen a client leave that place with their hair looking anything short of marvelous. updating my review since it's been awhile. marissa is STILL hands down the best stylist in the DMV area for natural hair. she is so knowledgeable, helpful, skilled and understanding at what she does. she always greets with a warm smile, great conversation, and just overall friendly and welcoming vibe. marissa helped me transition to natural from permed hair and has helped me maintain healthy hair between visits. she is great at consulting and treating scalp/hair issues and nurturing them both back to health. i have always had a problem with growing my hair longer and thicker, but with her help and guidance i have been able to retain so much length and achieve a full head of healthy hair. she is an amazing colorist and fear not ladies, a trim is truly a TRIM with marissa! i know many women go without trims or are fearful of trusting just anyone with the length they work so hard to achieve, but trust me marissa will not turn a trim into a cut and will always keep the health of your hair her first priority. i have gone from a shoulder length bob to long layers that are on their way to bra strap length all the way around (and not just the back). whether it's color, hair health, scalp health, transitioning, natural styles, or a flat iron and trim, marissa is definitely the woman you need to see! read more

Samantha (or Sam as many call her) does great hair and does hair great. In my case she has colored and cut my BAD hair for 14 years - during which time I have never been worked on by any other hair-dresser. My hair is very straight AND I have more than 30 cowlicks. Even so, Samantha not only keeps me presentable,, but somehow manages to make my hair look attractive. Through the years, I've watched Samantha do color, and cuts and treatments: on women and men - from every ethnicity. Samantha can do it ALL. She's a true artist practicing her craft at the highest level. In addition, she's pleasant to be around, is an excellent conversationalist, and she really cares about her clients. She's at the Bill Lawrence Salon on 18th street in trendy Adams Morgan It's a small boutique shop with a pleasant "at home" atmosphere and street parking is easy during daylight hours. I have been using Bill Lawrence Salon since my first trip to a hair salon in 1992. Over the years stylist have come and gone but one thing has remained a constant, excellent hair care and customer service. I always here horror stories of people blocking off a full day to get their hair done. That is something I have never experienced at this salon. I am always either in the chair for my touch up or in at the bowl getting washed with in 5 minutes and always out the door within 2 hours. Right now I go to Tayo and I love her. She has my hair healthy, strong, and fly. She gives some of the best hair cuts I have ever seen. I have most of my african-american coworkers and their daughters going to her now. Bill is the BOMB with razor cuts, my hair grew another inch in about 12 weeks before my next trim. So far I've only been twice but I think I found my "salon home!" The first time I called I was really distressed because another place I tried had caused some serious damage and breakage. Bill answered the phone and listened to my tale of woe with kindness and patience (which is really how they operate here in general -- with kindness and patience). He connected me with Lynn Wooden, a perfect match for me. I did a consult with Lynn, who is talented, professional and also a really genuinely wonderful person. She did some fixing that day and then I came back in a week to do a little more. I am more than happy with the results. I had severe breakage, lots of new growth and ratty ends on the parts that weren't broken off. She relaxed the new growth, gave me a nice classy bob, and I got lots of TLC for my hair and for me. I also want to say I have had no issues with wait times, the salon is clean and well-appointed, and everyone there is very pleasant and helpful. read more

I visited Samantha Banks at the Bill Lawrence salon on the suggestion of one of her clients. I was a little nervous because I was going for my first "real" haircut. Samantha was very friendly and informative about what styles would look best for my face shape/hair type. She informed me of what she was doing every step of the process and offered tips on how to manage my hair at home. Now, I must warn you this is a very "pricey" salon, BUT you definitely get what you pay for. I am very pleased with my cut and color and will definitely go back to Samantha to re-color and cut my hair. If you are looking for someone who is into healthy hair, informative about hair care, and friendly (and don't mind spending a lot of money on looking good)- Samantha Banks at the Bill Lawrence salon is the one to see!!!!
