I came here because I have a pixie and I read all of the overwhelmingly good reviews. The overall cut is fine, but the back near my hairline looks like it was butchered. It's cut really short and looks harsh and out of proportion compared to the rest of my cut. Despite seeing really impressive photos from other customers on their Instagram, my dye job is pretty meh. That said, everyone here is really friendly. If you are not turned off by this review, I recommend calling them to make an appointment rather than sending an email because, as what happened in my case, they did not see it at first. read more

I've been going to Trim for 5 years now. Hands down the best salon in DC. I've been to multiple stylists there, but mostly Mercedes. They all are incredibly talented and listen to what you want. I haven't had a single bad haircut or color here. Mercedes has transformed my hair many times from magenta to burgundy to purple. Mercedes and team do an amazing job with bobs (angled, layered, choppy, edgy, all of it) too. They are also taking COVID safety precautions very seriously. So if you're concerned about safety, don't be. With mandatory masks, temp checks, hand sanitizers, very limited employees and clients and air purifiers, I felt super safe. First of all, Trim is probably taking more COVID precautions then any other business, salon or otherwise. They opened back up about 6 weeks after they were allowed to because they wanted to make absolutely sure their staff and clients are safe. 3 chairs very far apart from each other, autoclaves, no hair washing or blowouts to reduce transmission. I really appreciate that care. I've been going to Mariana for years and she was back and fabulous. I've always just gotten simple haircuts, but I decided to change it up a bit and get all-over highlights. I can't imagine them looking any better. They look super natural and really come to life when I style it. My hair was too long and flat and lifeless when I came in (8 months without a cut) and Mariana fixed it, gave it movement and brightened it up. Go to Trim! It's worth it! read more

My hair is thinning due to a medical condition so I was hesitant to book a cut at a "fancy" salon. After putting it off for a few months I called these fine folks. Dani cut my hair. I have been getting my haircuts here from Mercedes since Trim opened, and they are always the best haircuts I've ever had. Most recently, I got my haircut here in October. Not only was it a fantastic cut, but I felt very safe - Trim staff are taking pandemic precautions very seriously. I don't really often write reviews but I had started following their instagram page back in 2016/2017 when I was still in undergrad. I remember being blown away by the sheer amount of people with curly/textured hair they had on their page...I really hadn't seen other salons do anything like that. I go to Melissa, and I have always been very happy with her work. I love the combination of professionalism and chill atmosphere at Trim. They will happily offer you a beer (and most of the ladies there rock some excellent tattoos) while giving you a great color or cut. Melissa did such a great job the last time I saw her that my hair felt even healthier after a rather lengthy bleaching session thanks to her use of Olaplex. They offer Bumble and Bubble products, but will recommend the right things for your hair, even if it's not what they carry, which I appreciate. Tips are cash only, but there is an ATM at the convenience store across the street. read more

If I could give Marianna a zero, I wouldn't. A zero is too good for the experience I had. I had cold called this business a day before because of the photos of edgy cuts they display on Yelp. I explained that I was someone who had been going through cyberharassment that involved interference with various social interactions, and asked if they were brave and professional enough to provide me with an appointment the next day for a stylist that was seasoned and respected. I got a quick appointment the next day at 2:15 pm with Marianna, whom the rep assured me had 3 years experience at the shop and 7 years total experience as a stylist. Sounded good. I arrived 30 minutes early to discover their shop was closed. An attractive tattooed lady with DT cat inked eyes bikes up to me 10 minutes later and introduces herself as Marianna. I follow her up the stairs to a perfectly appointed bright space with beautifully packaged products. We discussed the plan, and she seemed to be muttering something to someone. I explained a little about the work I had been doing in the past few months here in DC. I show her a photo, which I attach. Marianna tells me she used to be a fashion stylist, as in clothing, and then picked up scissors and appeared to be unsure of how to use the scissors, a choice that seemed strange since the salon displays clipper work, we discussed clippers, and a clipper would have been the natural choice, accomplishing the same thing more consistently and efficiently. The right temple work was exactly what I had said I didn't want, different than what she had showed me. She kept trying to give me blunt side burns, when I had explained I wanted to stay with a feminine angled look. After trying to work with her to get it right (even drawing the idea for her), I asked if I could use the clippers myself. I easily fixed the angle and we now had an example for the left temple. Marianna sees this and then says she feels uncomfortable and wants to stop the haircut. Really? I asked why, and she looked straight ahead at the mirror as though she were looking at something that wasn't there, and kept repeating she was uncomfortable. She wasn't nasty. She was just non-responsive. I kept my cool, but had concluded my session was being tampered with and that Marianna was not doing her usual best. I can't imagine that she has that much experience and is incapable of handling demanding and particular clients. This is so crazy. I had to go out and purchase the same type of tool that the salon uses for $33 plus tax. read more

My hairdresser left my local salon without a trace and I was left in desperate need of a cut ASAP. I wanted a look outside the conservative styles that rule Alexandria. So, I read endless yelp reviews of salons to find a good fit. Kathleen M. and Catherine R.'s reviews of Trim completely sold me - particularly Catherine's line that she "always walks out of Trim feeling glamorous, a little funky and completely satisfied." I was able to get an appt the next day with Claybourne. The receptionist recommended Claybourne when I asked for someone used to working with wavy hair. I was greeted by a woman with hot pink hair, sleeves of tattoos and at least one nose ring. I felt assured that I would get a funky cut. Sweet. I brought a few pictures of the hairstyle I wanted. Claybourne asked me many questions about how I normally style my hair, how my hair behaves. I got into the most inane details about my inconsistent habits but nonetheless she ate it up and used it to guide her cut as well as her advice on how to style it. About 4 inches later, I had a significantly shorter hairstyle, but one that was on point glamorous and a little funky. I've gotten so many compliments on my new hairstyle, which looks great whether I leave the house with my hair wet or if I style it. Claybourne clearly is innately curious about her practice and everything about it. She worked with my unique hair-related behaviors. She also gave me great advice about where to get certain things I was looking for - such as SLS free shampoo for wavy hair and cheap hair accessories. I have now been to trim 3 times, I think I can write a legitimate review. When I left colorado 2 years ago I was VERY sad to leave the salon I had come to see as family. Hip/cool/fun, I never thought I'd find anything like it. After a year and a half of getting mediocre cuts in the city, I decided to suck up the price and go to Trim which, after stopping a few people on the street and asking about their awesome hair, all said Trim. First I saw Clayborne. She was awesome and gave me a crazy awesome cut that everyone loved. 8 weeks later I was about to leave the country and realized i needed another cut, since Clayborne wasn't available, I saw Melissa. She is awesome. I, once again, loved my hair and had a great time there. I have pretty short hair which tends to grow out all mullet-y, but 8 weeks in and my hair looked great still. After 10 weeks I just went back to Melissa again and she remembered me and I had another great experience. Its more like a spa than a haircut. I had an appt after work and I got there a little early, so I was able to sit, listen to awesome music and read my book and even got to have a beer! Although it's a little pricey, I love this place and when i break it down (like all my economics training has taught me), I'm averaging only a little more than $1 a day to have really awesome hair. Yep, I live nearly 700 miles away and still go to Claybourne. Seriously, she's that good. Claybourne was there for me during the awkward grow out phase from a horrible "wedge" from Bang. She was there for me two days before flying out to San Francisco for the biggest/scariest interview of my life, thus far, and had to toy with the incredibly difficult decision to leave DC. And now, she's there for me when I come back to visit and am ready to go for more radical cuts and color now that I'm out of the office gig. She's imaginative in a non-scary way. On my most recent trip I wanted to do something wild and crazy but had no idea what. I obviously feel safe in Claybourne's trustworthy tattoed hands, and I ended up with fun copper streaks and bangs that I love. 2 months later, I still have some of the best hair days and the color has really faded out well, so it doesn't actually look faded. Yeah, Trim may be more expensive than you're used to, but with the free bang trims and the way that the cuts grow out it's completely worth it. Hell, if I'm traveling 700 miles, you can hop on the bus and make your way over there. Just be prepared to leave a really big tip. read more

I hate shopping for a hair stylist even more than I hate shopping for Christmas presents. Luckily for me I had a nice 3 year stretch where Mineyah at Logan Aveda was my go-to gal who knew me and my hair perfectly, and all I had to do was plop down in the chair and walk out with an excellent cut. Then one day I called and she had left, with no comment on where she would be going or if she would even be styling hair anymore. And thus began the arduous task of finding someone else yet again.. In an attempt to circumvent the frustration that I experienced the last time this happened, I asked for recommendations via Facebook for friends in the area who had specific stylists they liked, and although multiple people referred me to shops, only one indicated an exact person I could call up and get a great cut. The person they recommended was Melissa, here at Trim, and after half a dozen or so visits I haven't regretted taking their advice one bit. Unlike Christmas gifts, if you get a bad haircut you can't just take it back...you're stuck with it for at least a couple weeks until it grows out some. At Trim I've never once had to worry about that, as Melissa always listens to the exact length I want, always uses scissors instead of clippers (key!!!), and knows not to put all that unnecessary gel product crap in my hair after. My only gripe with Trim is that it's too far from my house in Capitol Hill! I wish I could have found a stylist down in my quadrant of the city to make things easier on myself, but now that I've got someone here I'll be sticking with her as long as she's around. read more

So I have been trying my whole life to find someone who could cut curly hair. Not someone that treated my hair as if it was straight hair and hoped it landed right. Well I did. Heather at Trim is great. I walked in and she listened to what I wanted. I needed a haircut. My hair was entirely too long and on top it was super flat if I let it air dry requiring me to dry my hair upside down or constantly flip my head around until it was dry for too long. She cut my hair while it was dry so everything did fall right. I wanted my hair to be about shoulder length, which as you know can cause serious lampshade head when your hair is curly. Now it is what I like to call controlled crazy. There are layers in it that I would have been scared to place before but really work for curly hair. I get the bounciness throughout that I could not get with the one length that everyone gave me before. I can wear my hair up at work but still be able to wear it out after. I liked it so much I went back for highlights. I was worried due to the bright color selections of some of the staff. I have a conservative job and as much as I would like bright red streaks I need to tone it down. Heather gave me great red and light brown highlights. She put most of the brighter ones underneath that would get brighter over time but are still in line with my job. I love it. I love doing my hair and noticing another bright color popping out. So If you have curly hair then Heather is your girl. Trim has a 2 week policy so if you want things changed or more highlights added you can come back and they will fix it. I actually had more cut when I went back for color. I couldn't be happier and for the first time in a long time I love the way my hair looks. I had a great experience at Trim. I loved, LOVED, my stylist in LA and have been putting off getting a haircut in DC/finding a new stylist for too long... then one day I looked in the mirror and realized my hair looked like sh*t. I called and Trim managed to fit me in on the same day-- always a plus. My hair looks great and my stylist, Heather, was wonderful-- good at communication, making natural small talk, and funny. I'm not a very good person when it comes to dealing with my hair and/or having opinions about it except that I want to look "good" and no urban mullets. This means I give my stylists very poor instructions. Heather managed to coax out of me what it was that I wanted and delivered. Like another reviewer, I have short hair and sometimes it is tough to get a short cut on a woman that doesn't make me look like a boy. My cut allows me to go from professional to rock and roll easily. Hooray! A little pricey ($70 after tip) but they do free bang trims and she cut my hair so it'd grow out well... I went to Trim after a terrible experience at Bang Salon and had an amazing experience. Kelly did a phenomenal job fixing the butcher job I came in with. I left with a fabulous pixie cut that is great for the office and can be mussed up for the weekend. They even have a two-week policy where I can come in and get it "touched up" if I decide something just isn't perfect. Trim also offers free bang trims in between cuts, which is great, especially for short hair that needs a lot of upkeep. The vibe and atmosphere is great - Trim is a small salon that is the opposite of the Hair Factories popping up all over DC. Kelly took her time and made sure I knew what she doing every step of the way. She made sure to ask my opinion beforehand. I really liked the attention to detail at Trim. It's a small place and doesn't need to get any bigger, lest it lose its charm. I have always been a cheap, aveda-going type, mostly because I didn't know what to do with my hair and if I was going to pull it back, why not save some money? Sometimes you need a good cut, and Trim is the place. I know that $70 is a lot to spend on a hair cut (for me, coming from Ohio) but with this humidity I need someone to cut my hair well so I can take full advantage of my wavy hair. Clayborn gave me bangs (a big risk for me, given my wavy hair) and showed me how to syle them without having to blow dry the rest. I am a pretty low-maintenance person and It was so great having someone style and having someone teach me how to take care of it. She listened to me and gave me exactly what I wanted. The staff is really nice and they give free bang trims! I think I'm hooked. I discovered Trim from my ex-bf's sister. The first time I met her, I gasped, "WHO DOES YOUR HAIR!" And she helpfully gave me the name of her stylist at Trim. That stylist has since left DC, but I can wholeheartedly recommend Heather, who can read my mind when I go in and say, "Well...I like it this length, but I donno...it's kind of boring...but I don't want too much color...And maybe bangs? Maybe not? I like that it lays flat here...Bangs are kind of a pain, right?" It's kind of like magic: she can sense how daring I'm feeling and how far (stylistically speaking) I'm willing to go. She tells me exactly how to take care of the style and what products I need to maintain it, and her recommendations are unfailingly reliable (Bumble & Bumble Does it All is amazing stuff!) I always walk out of Trim feeling glamorous and a little funky and completely satisfied with my cut/color. It seems like they specialize in funkiness. I would trust any of those stylists with a pixie, asymmetrical bob, odd colored stripes, mohawk...this is not the place to get the typical Washington Hill Staffer bob, unless, of course, that's what you want. Just seems like a waste of their creativity! Caveats: the color gets EXPENSIVE, so be sure you check the price before agreeing to do anything. And it takes a long, long time. Schedule a whole Saturday morning if you're getting cut and color! My cuts without color are $60 plus tip. I have been to Bang and had an overall disappointing experience-I think it was punishment for betraying Heather. (Minus one star for expense. Sometimes I just can't justify it.) P.S. I have had a dismal track record with haircuts in DC. For years, I was getting my haircut every time I went home to SF, while intermittently trying DC salons, hoping to find Bladerunner's equal in DC. I tried VSL, PR @ Partners, Salon Cielo, and Bubbles. And once I went to Trim, and got a good cut from Stephanie, but I just wasn't digging our rapport, so I kept looking, despite liking the salon, and loving the fact it was a few blocks from home. But I couldn't go back there, because there's a code: you just can't go back to the same salon and ask for a different stylist. And then, thanks to Yelp, I learned that Stephanie was gone. And I rejoiced, because now there was a way around code: I picked Heather. And she is awesome. I'd been growing out my most despised cut of life for about 4 months, and could no longer take it. I didn't have high expectations due to the original cut, but Heather managed to make me feel like myself again. She gave me exactly what I was looking for -- AND managed to keep the length I was sure she'd have to lop off. She was also great to chat with, and helped me out with styling techniques, etc. The girl knows her stuff and I enjoyed hanging out with her for an hour. The cuts are $70, and while you can find cheaper in this city, you're not going to find better. Trust me -- I've tried. read more

I've been waiting to write my review of Trim because I didn't want it to be any harder to get an appointment with Melissa. Is that selfish? Yeah probably, but she's the only stylist I've ever had who can make my hair look good through multiple cuts. Ever. I have very fine, thin, oily, and cowlick-y hair. It is a pain in the neck and most stylists can't handle it. The first time I went to Melissa I gave her a good idea of what I wanted. She delivered, so the next time I told her to do whatever *she* thought would look good on me. She proceeded to give me one of my favorite cuts of all time. A few months later, after a couple of trims, I let her do what she wanted again. I actually really didn't like this cut--too short for me (she loves short, edgy hair)--BUT it grew in beautifully. A month after that cut I started getting tons of compliments on my hair. The last time I went I just got it trimmed, and again it looks great. It's longer than a pixie cut but shorter than a bob. It's appropriate enough for my office job without being boring. I'm happier with my hair than I've ever been. My only problem with Trim is that the last couple of times they haven't called to confirm my appointment, and I've had to call them. If it's a problem with my phone then they should at least leave a message. As for the price: you get what you pay for. Your options for cheaper cuts in DC are Bubbles (blech), PR @ Partners (hit or miss), and Bang (mostly miss). If you want your stylist to take her time, if you want your stylist to remember your name, if you want your stylist to explain how you should style your new cut, you need to pay more. $70, compared to similar salons in DC, is a good deal. I'm moving to Philly soon and I'm not looking forward to having to change stylists. It might be worth it to make the trip down to DC just for a haircut! read more

Trim is pretty much awesome. Not only is it right in my neighborhood, relatively inexpensive for a high quality haircut (I don't consider $37 outrageous for a men's cut - in DC at least), but the whole experience is just plain fun. First evidence of this is when the receptionist asks you if you want "anything to drink? - coffee, water, a beer?" and then comes back with a Stella.. I had never had a beer while getting my haircut before, but it really adds to the whole experience (as long as you can keep your hair out of your beer). Onto the haircut.. I made my first appointment with Claibourne, unaware then of her awesomeness to come. Not only did she give an awesome haircut, but she was actually fun to talk to - like you were just catching up with a friend, not awkwardly talking about random discussion topics they use on every client. (Ok, it just occurred to me that she might just actually think I'm cool, so no promises that your conversations will be as good. But they probably will.) No product sales pitches (unless you ask), no snotty attitudes, etc. I'd been to other more expensive salons in the city ($60 for a guys cut? Come on!) and have not been as happy with my hair or overall experience as I have found with Trim. And no, I'm not being paid to write this. read more

Veronica cut and styled my hair a few weeks ago and did a wonderful job. I showed her a picture of a style I had a few years ago; she asked questions and discovered I usually air dry and wear my hair under a surgical scrub cap and helmet most of the time, and then explained that she cut it in a way that would keep it looking good with my lifestyle. I wanted side swept bangs and she cut them in such a way that they wouldn't interfere with my glasses, which I hadn't even thought about. I was happy with the way it looked when I walked out and after several washings and usual run out the door or go straight to bed styling, I'm still happy with the way my hair looks everyday. (I don't know much about female cuts) I have had a number of different stylists over the years and she's really the first one to get it 100% right. She's also completely enjoyable to spend 30-40 minutes with. The only downside is the price, $37 for the cut plus a handsome tip. However, she will let you come in between cuts free for about 15 minutes to even up the neck and trim the sides so you're able to go longer without scheduling a full appointment. This is the kind of place you dream of getting your hair cut. It's hip, it's trendy, but it's also not too pricey and not at all stuck-up. The atmosphere is very fun and all of the stylists are like that friend you idolize because she's a lot cooler than you. Looking for a new stylist and a shorter, hipper style to make me look older, I made an appointment with Ana after reading great reviews from her satisfied clients. Due to some (typical) directional issues, I got lost and missed my appointment, but they squeezed me in quickly with Heather, whose client had cancelled due to poor weather. All I knew was that I wanted it "shorter, but not too short", with layers and sideswept bangs. Not very specific, but she knew exactly what to do and I ended up with the best haircut of my life. I haven't changed my hairstyle in literally 10 years, so I was a little nervous and wanted to make sure I went to the right place. My hair is super thick, wavy and pretty difficult to work with (think: Edward Scissorhands). I've been getting haircuts different places in DC (Bubbles, PR at Partners), and I have to say that Trim is, by far, the best! Erin worked magic on my hair. She was friendly, listened to what I had to say, spent over an hour with me and did a seriously awesome job. I absolutely love my haircut! $70 is a little steep for a young professional, but it was totally worth the price and I feel really good about going there. I'll definitely be heading back! read more

After moving here a few years ago and trying dozens of hair salons.....I have to say that I finally found the one to come back to. :) After receiving a horrible haircut at another salon and having to wear ponytails and hats until it grew out (3 months) a new co-worker recommended this place. Her hair always looks great whether she was wearing it curly or straight and had a cool edge to it. She led me to her stylist Melissa. She was fantastic.... gave me a great cut that worked on my wavy hair and showed me how to style it for when I went home. I have to say that it looks fabulous even after a few weeks of styling it myself. I will def come back. ......for me the price ($70) is worth it for a great cut :) don't really know how much hair color is..... should ask next time I go :) I have to agree with the previous post....I was a little intimidated too.....but I am so glad I tried this place. read more
