I have come here several times. If you want AMAZING sushi, you come here. It started when we came here with a gift card we got as an engagement gift. We sat at the sushi bar and the staff were so fun and nice. We got saki overflowing to represent overflowing love in our lives. I have never had a roll I did not like here. End dinner with a drink at billy after dark! Ask the server how to get there though.. ;)
Billy Sushi is our go-to spot for special occasions and easily our favorite sushi restaurant in the Twin Cities. We recently visited for a celebratory dinner and, as usual, had an outstanding experience. We started with the Deluxe Sashimi Platter, and the fish was exceptionally fresh, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. It set the tone for the rest of the meal. From there, we worked our way through what felt like an entire boat full of sushi rolls, and every single one was excellent. The quality of the fish, creativity of the rolls, and attention to detail are consistently impressive. The service was equally strong. Our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable, and kept everything moving at just the right pace without making us feel rushed. There are plenty of good sushi restaurants in the Twin Cities, but Billy Sushi remains our favorite. Between the fresh seafood, consistently excellent food, fun atmosphere, and great service, it continues to be our first choice whenever we're celebrating something special.
Came here on a Monday evening with a 5:30 pm reservation and we were seated immediately. Our waitress seemed pretty knowledgeable about the menu and offered to answer any questions we had! The dumplings were average but the tuna appetizer was amazing!! We spilt 4 rolls and they were delicious, and you could tell the fish was quality! It was pretty loud in the restaurant and it got busy fast, so I would recommend a reservation! Over all it was very good, and we'll be back.
We've eaten at Billy Sushi twice now, and I intentionally waited to write my review. It definitely is one of the best sushi restaurants here in the Twin Cities, if not THE best. I will admit, it's a bit too fancy for me sometimes. And the price matches. But it has been a delightful and delicious dining experience both times, so who am I to complain? I really want to come back and do the omakase sometime. -Cocktails: They have this whole big explanation about how they take special care in the curation of their cocktails, and I have to say, they are pretty great. I got the Party Girl this last time and it was good but pretty boozy. The gold flak on the top of it was a bit over the top for me, but whatever. My friend got the Raspberry Beret, which was delicious and obviously appropriately themed for Minneapolis and being down the street from First Ave. The restaurant also has an impressive selection of sake, Japanese beer, etc. -Apps: We love the yuzu tuna and have gotten it both times. This last time we also got the salmon carpaccio, which was also delicious. I love age dashi tofu, and this version was good - but not the best (Oragimi has a better one). We found the broth to be delicious, but the one big chunk of tofu was a bit unwieldy, and the coating was a bit gummy. I would pass on that one next time. -Sushi-wise: Nigiri are amazing here - delicious, perfectly cut fish, generous portions, rice that is often still warm. No complaints. For rolls, we love the Big Blue Wave and the Toro Mania. We also ordered the Fancy & Furious, which was less delicious to me but still pretty tasty. Service both times was totally fine - nothing exceptional but nothing to complain about either. I am sure we'll be back. Note: you basically need a reservation if you want to come during a prime time or on the weekend. Book ahead.
We had a reservation for 7:15 on a Sunday night for two people. We were seated promptly. The ambiance is very cool, I had never seen the tablet towel thing so that was unique thought it sat on our table long after we used it and we were confused about the etiquete of it all. We had the salmon carpaccio which was the highlight of the meal. It was similar to a sashimi but was doused in a delicious sauce. We then had the squid game which has a much smokier flavor than expected - it almost had an essence of teriyaki and was probably our least favorite though not bad. We went with two rolls: the 2-14 and the Mishap. Both were absolutely delicious. We were ready to order more but our waiter was nowhere to be found. We waited several minutes and then decided to just get the check instead. We recently moved from a place known for its sushi so we found the quality of fish here to be good - but not outstanding and would echo the sentiment that prices are pretty astronomical. The vibe of the place was cool and the dishes were good but the price and service definitely cost it a star. We walked because parking in the area did look pretty tough!
All the food was delicious! The drinks were very good as well, unfortunately they ran out of expresso and couldn't order an expresso martini. My waitress was also not the greatest but I would definitely back for the food.
The food literally left me speechless. I absolutely get the hype. I went on a Tuesday with no reservation but was able to get squeezed in. Giving it 3 stars because it was my first time going to Billy Sushi and my server was super snarky?? Did not enjoy my service at all. The food was amazing. Probably won't go back.
Had a great experience at Billy as usual. We ordered a flight of nigiri and 2 sushi rolls- the silly billy and number 9. The nigiri was definitely pricey at $69, and although it was definitely delicious and fresh, for that price it was probably just a one time order! The nigiri and sushi rolls came out at different times, and it would have been great to enjoy them together. Our server was friendly and gave us recommendations. The ambiance was of course, packed on a Saturday night. Definitely make reservations at least a couple of weeks ahead if you want prime weekend times. We were a bit late and they still accomodated us. Love this place!
The best sushi in America! Most certainly the best in Twin-Cities! 1. Reservation: a must, they are very busy and packed! 2. Food: Amazing! Sushi rolls, sashimi.. the whole selection is amazing. fresh and creative take on all rolls they have 3. Drinks: quite a few cocktails to choose from. They have one of the best whiskeys and sake selection in town. Try those too! 4. Service: professional, swift and courteous. 5. Overall atmosphere is lively, quite loud and happy! All in all, you gotta be here to know how great it is!
Billy Sushi will change your life. It might be better you don't go there. The sushi here is so FRESH, UNIQUE, and INNOVATIVE, and well, tasty. And now I always want to go back to Billy Sushi every chance I can. I day dream about the savory roll options and sashimi. I've always had a great experience with every server. The ambiance is just a tad packed, but still worth it for the food!
A random Friday, driven by a sudden craving for salmon, led me to wander into Billy Sushi. I was seated right away at the bar, perfectly balanced between couples and fellow solo diners, an ideal setup for the evening. I was immediately drawn to the striking wall of Japanese whisky. Mitch, the bartender, was incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and friendly. With his guidance, I started with their Old Fashion made with Japanese whisky and bitters, then followed it with a pour of Ichiro whisky. As Mitch explained, its subtle caramel finish is rare for Japanese whisky, and I absolutely loved it. I had only planned to try a couple of salmon dishes, but the food was so good that I ended up indulging far more than expected. The salmon carpaccio caught my eye first and completely delivered. The Squid Game was outstanding -- crispy on the outside, soft and tender inside, and packed with flavor. And even though I was stuffed, I had to order sashimi to test the freshness and quality of their fish. Five out of five. On top of the great food, I met three other solo diners, including Lawrence Gilliard Jr., who's currently touring with the Purple Rain musical, fresh off their opening night a couple of days ago. What an unexpected spark to the evening! If you're in the Twin Cities and looking for excellent food paired with a solo-friendly bar, counter seating, and easy conversation, Billy Sushi is absolutely worth the stop.
This was a fabulous introduction to the food scene here in Minneapolis. My niece and I stopped by for dinner. The server we had was very kind, helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. I ordered the Swipe Right roll, Fancy and Furious roll, and the Opulent nigiri. I was pleased to learn that all were very fish forward. The fish used was all great quality and fresh. The restaurant itself has a semi-casual vibe which would make it a great stop for a midweek dinner or date night. Overall, if you're in the area and truly enjoy quality sushi, this is the place for you.
One of the best places in Minneapolis for Sushi! Literally can't go wrong with anything on the menu!!! Our rolls and edamame were delish! Perfect place for a girls night or date night. The vibes are very cute here and we had the BEST server who had the best recommendations

The food is delicious. Pricey. Lefty roll is a must have every time I go. The other rolls are good but it is definitely pricey. When being served, one of the rolls on our plate was not the one we ordered but the waitress quickly realized and immediately brought it back to correct it. Mistakes happen sometimes which I understand, and the staff was quick to fix it and extremely apologetic. Appetizers are always a hit. read more
I walked into Billy Sushi and the atmosphere was pretty cool! Upon walking in, you can see the sushi bar, and just how wide open the restaurant is, which was great. We made a reservation so we were promptly seated next to the sushi bar and greeted by a waiter. He was very knowledgeable of the menu and helped answer our questions. In terms of ordering, I really like that the menu has pictures to go along with the description of the menu items. We ordered the seaweed salad, gyoza, crunchy roll, screaming O roll, double D roll, chiquito roll, 2-14, a-a-ron, george clooney, and number 9 roll. Overall, we weren't overly impressed. They all had very similar flavors and we were waiting for the depth of the rolls to happen but it never did. I was bummed that the seaweed salad was majority cucumber and had very little seaweed in it. I tried the screaming o and it was incredibly fishy tasting, which was a huge turnoff. Might be due to heating it up? I've had similar rolls at other sushi bars and they've never been fishy. Overall, Billy Sushi is okay. It's not the best sushi in the Twin Cities, and I was disappointed that the sushi didn't have more flavor depth. It's also on the pricey side for sushi rolls so I'll be sticking to my go-to spots that are just as good at half the cost. read more
The (mostly)short and sweet: All in all nothing bad happened, our server was good, restaurant is nice and clean. The menu is solid, it's just not great and woefully overpriced. Our party of 4 spent a tad over $300 and Billy Sushi does not at all warrant it as the value is not there nor did I feel the experience was sufficient to even get 3 stars. Skip the highly overpriced Sake and note they do not serve any warm sake. If you want a bit more context: Took my daughter out for her 26th birthday at Billy Sushi. Looking back I suspended and or flatly broke some very basic principles that likely would have stopped me from the mistake we were about to make. I am an avid fan of all things ocean and sea with a particular love for those that can be eaten raw. When I go out for sushi I tend to avoid the rolls and gravitate toward the sashimi and nigiri. It's not that I don't like the rolls it's that I prefer to pay for and get the 'goods' without all the fluff in a roll. For starters we ordered, Bill San's Po Boi, Tempura Avocado and Crispy Rice Tuna. Po Boi and the Avocado were excellent and really got them both stars in this review as there was little upside from there and simply no value. As would be the case with most of the tuna the Crispy Rice Tuna was not great and was very fishy. Since not everyone in the party felt the same as me about rolls we went with 3, George Clooney, Uncultured Swan, Tiger Maki. I enjoyed the George Clooney a lot and the Uncultured Swan was decent but too salty. Hard no on Tiger Maki again very fishy and too salty. At nearly $30 a roll I would have expected a wow factor but honestly I've had better for slightly more than half that price. In addition to the rolls I ordered the Blue Fin Chu Toro sashimi, Scallops sashimi and Yellowtail nigiri. Blue fin was very fishy and not at all buttery or fatty. I've had much better locally in the suburbs for far less money. Scallops were ok but I'd recommend a ponzu/mirin or something with them as they were not sweet like good scallops should be. I've made my own from Costco Hokkaido scallops that put these to shame at a 10th the price. Yellowtail nigiri was excellent but of little consolation this deep into the meal. My gorgeous but seafood averse wife had the Miso Soup, Beef Kushi Yaki and JFC. She said all were very average. As someone who has had excellent sushi on both coasts and who regularly makes their own, I would caution you to think twice before believing Billy Sushi is going to deliver a premium experience. read more
Amazing sushi! It was my first time in the midwest and was super curious when my friends told me they wanted to take me to sushi. Sushi was fresh and delicious! My favorite was the butterfly roll. The waitress was great and kept pouring us our bottle we ordered. The restaurant was so beautiful and bright! I would definitely fo back! read more

My top favorite sushi place in Minnesota! I could rave about this place forever how good and fresh everything is. Make sure you make a reservation. I reserve a month in advance if you want a good time for dinner. Billy sushi gives off a cozy and welcoming ambiance. Even though seating is a little limited, the intimate setting adds to the attraction. Now onto the sushii- my top favorites are.. The Big blue wave- includes Negi toro, cilantro, jalapeno, topped with a different ingredients. The rolls are so big its a two bitter for me. The toro mania and Mistletoe roll offers the same type of freshness and deliciousness! My absolute favorite is the wagyu handroll. This is priced a bit more but it's so good that I splurged everytime. It is the perfect combination of wagyu beef and crab. Billy sushi is my top #1 sushi places to go to. Everyone has to try this place out! read more
Absolutely fantastic. Puts all other sushi to shame. If you are in the Minneapolis area, stop and make a reservation to dine here.. and make sure to stop into the speakeasy after dinner. I can't say enough positive things about the quality of service, atmosphere and food. By far my favorite roll was the fancy and furious. Everything I could ask for and just the right textures and flavors. The only thing better could possibly be in Hawaii or at Nobu. My second favorite menu item was the crispy rice tuna. I've been know to order this anywhere I can find it, but this version throws all other renditions out the window. The price is worth it, the food is amazing. So we have been wanting to try this place for a long time but didn't get a chance. On a whim on A Saturday, we decided to give it a try. Of course there was no way to get a reservation with such short notice so I put my name on the waitlist for the two of us and figured we will give it a shot. I was disappointed to find out that having my name on the waitlist through Yelp doesn't really help as the hostess informed us that we need to get on the waitlist in person. Even for bar seating as they were fully booked. The wait was about an hour for a party of two so we decided to put our name on the waitlist and walk around for an hour. We checked back in after an hour and were able to get seated at a table in the bar area. The server came over with the menus and waters. She also hydrated our wet napkins and explained the drink menu. We ordered a couple of drink which were very nice. At Your Window came in this cute little swan glass. The drink special was delicious too. We also ordered a Sign O' The Times later which was a delicious pink drink (not "that" pink drink). We ordered some food with the help from our server who, again, was very helpful in helping us decide what to order. We stated with Beef Kushi Yaki and the Yuzu Tuna. Followed that up with Salmon Nigiri, Bluefin Tuna (fatty cut) and the Miso Cod. Finished off with the Silly Billy roll and the 2-14 roll. Really enjoyed the Yuzu Tuna and the Salmon along with the cod. The rolls were also really good. Some of the best sushi I have had in the cities. The sashimi and the kushi yaki were underwhelming but definitely enjoyed everything else. Overall a very good meal and this will definitely become our go to sushi place in town. The food is good, but honestly, it is pretty pricey. I think i rather go to an all you can eat and get about the same quality of food. The only sushi that has its uniqueness was the one in the tinfoil. You're kind of limited to your pick of sushi if you want the boat, but also, you have to choose more sushi to get the boat, i understand having only 3 rolls is not enough, but maybe get a smaller boat that can. The sushi is very pricey. The sashimi was ok, they didnt taste that fresh. The service was good, but you have to be fast cause a lot of people are waiting outside. Our wonderful server Suheily took great care of us and made the perfect recommendations on cocktails, appetizers and rolls to share! While this is an expensive sushi restaurant (specialty rolls run from $20 to $36), the quality of the sushi is fresh and flavorful. I've been to Billy's twice, with my most recent visit on 12/5/2024. The restaurant was decked out for the holidays, and a welcoming sight from the bleak weather. Thankfully it wasn't too busy, and I was able to get a seat at the counter without a reservation (might want to consider a reservation if you go on a Friday or weekend). I started my meal with their Cuz I Love You cocktail ($15, strawberry gin, yuzu and lemon juice, simple syrup, cherry bark vanilla bitters), which wasn't too sweet and a nice way to start the night. Miso soup ($7, good broth) and the mistletoe roll ($27, crab and spicy tuna topped with tuna, eel, snapper, salmon, avocado, white tuna) followed. I agree with the other reviewers that Billy's does a great job at providing fresh fish and creating fun-flavored rolls for their menu. Note for the hearing impaired folks, because it's an open kitchen, it can get quite loud. Since it wasn't too busy, I had a pleasant conversation with one of the sushi chefs (botany nerds unite, they use shiso flowers as a garnish that are a part of the mint family!). My waiter was friendly and attentive, and I enjoy the attention to detail both in the presentation of the food to the hot hand towel to wash your hands at the beginning of the visit. All in all, a lovely evening with great food. read more
A good option for a special night out! I made a reservation for 5 people about a week before for a Wednesday. 5:15pm and 8:45pm were the only decent options left. Book as far an advance if you can if you want a specific time. Also allow some extra time ahead to find parking. FOOD The food is fantastic, albeit pretty pricey. The ingredients are high quality and the rolls are unique and super tasty. Our group split edamame, JFC, the Superior Sushi Boat and it was plenty! SERVICE Everyone was kind and courteous. However we were annoyingly reminded about the 90-minute table limit multiple times even though we weren't ever near exceeding it. AMBIANCE The space is great! The movie poster decor in the bathroom is the best! Though the loud EDM was slightly distracting and made it hard to have a conversation in a crowded room. read more
I visited Billy's Sushi for my best friends birthday. It was our first time there and it was an amazing experience. The wait staff were friendly. We ordered the sushi boat and expectations were exceeded. The price was about $250. It seems spendy but the amount you get is well worth it. The images on the wall were very elegant and wholesome. Billy Sushi has left such a positive impression on me! I've been twice now; both times, the sushi was fresh and the service was fantastic. What we ordered each time was influenced by server recommendations and they nailed it! My favorite roll was the Big Blue Wave: Negi toro, cilantro, jalapeño, bluefin tuna, avocado, spicy scallops, and blue masago. The Fancy & Furious was so tasty - the yuzu was perfect on it: Bluefin tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocados, unagi sauce, hon maguro, shiso leaf, yuzu sauce, sriracha dots. Street parking can sometimes be a little tricky if it's peak dinner time, since there are also a few other restaurants nearby. I can't believe it took me so long to go here but it was well worth the wait. Got the Silly Billy and its one of the best rolls I have ever had. The ambiance is great but even better at Billy's After Dark downstairs. Also the Mango Sauce for the spring rolls was phenomenal. read more

This place is good, the food is good. Server is good. But the price is way too expensive for what I get and the wait is too long. I mean for a sushi in twin city it's good enough but yeah too expensive. Not that the food is bad, it's great but the price is too steep. read more
Billy has done it again with another customer, ME! Every. Single. Thing. on their menu is something you cannot go wrong with. From Miso Cod- to their highly popular rolls. From their beer selections and their sake they have. Miso cod was smooth and buttery. LOVE the smokey taste from the char. Salmón crudo was delicious with the tango ed's and creamy texture from the avacado. Sushi rolls and fish selections tasted SO fresh. Also, Billy is NOT shy with the sushi portions we are getting, and rice doesn't take up 70% of the roll. We came here for my birthday and I'm glad that we were able to experience this majestic place. Services is amazing, abundance is of culture and passion delivered in each dish. read more

Probably one of the better sushi spots in Minneapolis for sure. I was a little skeptical for a place named Billy Sushi, but it's worth a try! You have your mix of rolls but there are also some great nigri and sashimi options that are a great quality too. My fave was the chef's choice nigri. All of the fish were excellent, melt in your mouth quality. Note if you get the sashimi, make sure to get the real wasabi. That's the good stuff that won't get your nose burning! read more

Knock your socks off sushi! Wow! Some of the best sushi I've had in a long time. So fun sitting at the sushi bar, talking to the chefs and Billy himself. Our server was awesome and gave the best recommendations on drinks and sushi. Such a cool vibe, will definitely be back. read more
The sushi here was very good! Beautiful ambiance inside. I sat at the sushi bar and watched all the sushi get made. The cocktail that I started with was super sweet I really didn't like it. The sushi I got though was very good. I got the naughty Ninja and the mistletoe rolls. They were both great. I do feel like this place is a little overpriced though which is why it only got four stars. read more
This is a first class sushi joint. All the cool kids go here. There is metered street parking available on the street in front of the restaurant and also along adjacent streets as well. The inside dining area is not very big and gets packed. They have seating along the bar and there are tables to sit at as well. We had a very large group so we sat in a private room in the back of the place. I highly recommend making a reservation if you plan on coming here. The place is very high speed, trendy and hip. The entire staff there were amazing. They were all very friendly attentive and helpful. Billy, as he usually does, even made it back to our room and hung out. He is a very personable guy. He could probably run for the mayor of Minneapolis. Total disclosure, I am not a sushi eater, but I made an exception for this place. I expanded my horizons and tried some things for the first time. I tried blue fin jaw, which this is the only place in Minneapolis that you can get it. I also tried raw fish (sashimi), raw fish on rice (nigiri), sushi rolls, and waygu beef. I must admit, i thought that I would be grossed out, but really liked everything. I did like some stuff more than others. Some of my favorites include blue fin, the tuna nigril, the Screaming "O" roll and the George Clooney roll. Later in the evening, the restaurant opens a speak easy lounge down stairs that you can access from the back of the building. This is a chill spot with a lot of seating. There were not a lot of people in there though. It must be a secret joint. I really liked this spot. You will find some instragamable wings in the bathroom area that you can pose in front of. Like I said, it is a very trendy spot. They do not serve food down there. They just have a full bar. This spot also has a private room in the back that is decent sized and can host a large party. I am not going to lie, this place is a bit on the pricey side, but it is well worth every penny. My group had an amazing time here and I was not the only one who experienced raw fish and sushi for the first time. So even if you are not a sushi lover, but hav an open mind, I highly recommend giving this place a try. If you do visit this joint and see Billy, be sure to congratulate him on his recent US citizenship. read more
My husband and I went to Billy Sushi for date night, the first time having sushi since our 2 year old was born! Sushi is my favorite food and I was NOT disappointed. We shared the milestone with our server Katie and she was so sweet to bring over an order of Bill Sans Po Boy tempura shrimp on the house. This was DELICIOUS. We sat at the sushi bar (normally I prefer a table but it was just fine!) and made pleasant conversation with one of the sushi chefs. Drinks- I got two, both tequila drinks, one mezcal. Both were so good, easy to drink, fresh. Usually mezcal is too smoky for me but this was well balanced. Starters: Seaweed salad- a must order. Refreshing and so so tasty. Spring roll- haru maki. amazing, the sauce had mango and tasted slightly sweet but well-balanced. Rolls: NoLo Yolo, George Clooney, Sorry Charlie, and the Tiger Maki. All were outstanding. The fish was fresh and the textural blend of each was right on point. Billy Sushi ain't cheap. But it's the best sushi in Minneapolis in my opinion, and with MN sushi, you have to pay to get the good stuff. The best sushi we have had outside of Hawaii. Absolutely will return, no question. Billy is simply the best. If you like sushi I dont think there is a better option in the twin cities. The quality of the sushi is simply amazing. Depending where you get seated you can see them hand make every roll that is ordered. When you get 6 or more rolls they bring it out on a big boat which is fun(see photo). There is a range of options from more traditional rolls to more fun rolls. Being in the Midwest they also seem to have some rolls for people less inclined to eat raw fish, although the fish is the so good. If there was a place to experiment with raw fish this is the place. There are good appetizers that aren't just fish as well but obviously the sushi is the main attraction. They have a lot of saki options which is kind of fun as well. The service has always been top notch and friendly. The only downside really is it's not that large of an area so you typically need to book a reservation in advance (sometimes weeks in advance if it's a popular date) but it is popular for a reason. It is also fairly expensive but considering the quality of the fish it is well worth it. You could probably find cheaper sushi but for the quality you're not going to beat Billy. It's my go-to birthday celebration spot. There is also an associated speakeasy that if you want to keep the party going is always good time. read more
I was a little let down after the hype around Billy Sushi. It was good, but not great. Some fishy bites and anything that says it's spicy is actually spice unlike a lot of Midwest sushi! We ordered a huge array and none of them really stood out and blew my mind. The crispy tuna was just ok, but I don't think I'll be back as there are so many other sushi spots to try in the area. read more
