I am currently dogsitting in Williamsburg, and of course what do I do? I LOCK MYSELF OUT. I gave billy's a call, and they sent out Finnbar and Anthony. Great guys, super friendly, and well prepared. Of course the door/locks were full proof and pretty much near-impossible for any robber to get in, but these guys made sure I got into the apartment with no damage and tried every possible thing to ensure it wouldn't cost me a buttload of money. They also didn't make me feel like a complete idiot for locking myself out (which I've had not-so-friendly locksmiths do before). Knowing how I am (absent minded and a basket case), this probably won't be the last time I lock myself out, but I'll make sure to call these guys if I do. Sometimes you just want what you ask for. All I wanted was to get my high security locks re-keyed, but other locksmiths I called for an estimate insisted on replacing my locks (which on the low end would have cost me double). Just went and got some keys made. I like this place. My keys were done in a moment, and he let me know before cutting them that one of them would be pricier ($5 as opposed to a buck and a half). I went out and purchased a good Schlage lock from my local home depot and had Billy's guy come out and hook it up. I'd normally do this myself as I'm pretty handy, but I have a metal door on my apartment and didn't have the holes drilled for it. Scott came out promptly and had the lock installed in about an hour. He took his time to explain the differences in locks for apartment doors and actually told me the lock I purchased was pretty good. I'm glad he didn't tell me I had a piece of junk and try to sell me on something else. He tightened up the screws on the door hinges and on the other existing lock and went on his way. The look and feel of this place causes me to think they are highly-experienced and in-demand. It looks like they have comprehensive lock/security products including for bicycles. I had a very basic key need. My key copies from another establishment weren't working so I took the best working key I could find for Billy's to copy. Billy's made 2 copies for me and they worked great ($3.59). There was a short wait while two others in front of me evidently received just what they needed in short order. What a rip off place! Today they charged an 86 year old elderly lady an exorbitant amount of money to simply change a battery in her safe (that she previously bought from them). Btw: she previously had him change all the locks to her apt....so she is a good loyal customer. When I called to tell the owner it took only 20 seconds and asked if he could be a little more price sensitive, he smugly said NO. He could care less about taking advantage of the elderly. I will tell anyone that will listen, check your pockets when dealing with this guy. I had Billy's switch out my locks for Mul T Locks with a J-bar--they were amazing. The guys were on time, professional, and very polite. They quoted me a flat rate over the phone, but when I paid, they needed to add the tax so I wrote an extra check for just the tax--no big deal. An hour after the guys left, I got a call from the store saying that it was a mistake and there should not have been tax added on top of the agreed upon price and he tore up the second check. Really trustworthy--which is what you'd want in a locksmith. read more

It's simple, came here after another shop in the area (which will remain nameless) screwed me out of selling me a lock that didn't work and then tried to keep my money. I came in the first time and told Billy my problem with the top lock and bottom deadbolt. After discussing it he told me about the cheaper way to do it myself and just gave me one top lock and told me I probably didn't need the deadbolt. After I had issues installing it, he helped me figure out the locking mechanism and gave me extra attention while the other fella at the counter fielded phonecalls, easily spending about 10-15 minutes talking to me about the purchase. I came back after still having issues with the old deadbolt, he oiled it examined it and made sure everything was reset the way it was, showed me again how it works at the counter and all in all spent about 20-30 minutes with me on a small $20 purchase ($10 profit) to be sure that I got it. I really appreciate Billy's for not condescending to me or trying to sell me things that I didn't need. EXCELLENT service, working as a part-time manager in retail I am told to sell goods that the customer doesn't always ask for, these guys don't do that, and they really take the time to help you out. To the people with 1 star reviews: I am thinking you were either rude or didn't provide all the locking mechanisms, if you suck at installing stuff yourself (like me), bring ALL of your components, make sure you explain or take photos of your door, and these guys will help you out. Came here off a friend's recommend from a lockout situation a few months back and I won't go anywhere else now. Thanks guys, so much. Yesterday, my doorknob and lock broke, and I was locked in, stuck inside my own apartment. I called my landlord, who was out of the country. I then called my new super, who informs me nonchalantly that he does not start work till 5pm. Helpless and hopelessly late for work, I tried dissembling the door plate and doorknob myself to no avail. Yelp comes to the rescue and directs me to Billy's in Greenpoint. Two phone calls and 40 minutes later, a cheery, polite young (and easy on the eyes) locksmith shows up. I slip my key through under the slit of my door, and 'Open sesame', my door was open. He checked out my lock, tells me that it was not correctly installed, hence my problem. He offered to change the door plates, fix and upgrate the lock for $150 at first, which was too steep for my budget. Mr. Locksmith was very accommodating and then offered to make a minimal fix, and I was charged only $100. read more

They own the building and are helpful when they feel like it. Finishing a personal conversation comes before helping customers and if you ask a lot of questions they get agitated and answer with, "I don't know," more frequently to give you the hint. A neighborhood staple and dinosaur but one I use only when necessary. Parking is a nightmare and available spaces are used by their vans. Their prices are a little high also. if you have an alternative place try it first. read more

Loved Scott who explained to me with charm and patience - when I went into the shop - how my door lock worked and how it might have gone so wrong. Then he came to my apartment and did what had to be done. Well actually he did more. The door turned out to be incorrectly installed (new condo construction!) so he ground things down so that now it not only locks again but fits perfectly - which it had never previously done. I have never written a review on Yelp, although I use it all the time, but this business has me so riled up I have to make sure this is known. My roommate came home last night and when she went to unlock the door, the actual lock fell out. So I called today to see if we could get it replaced, and here's how the cookie crumbled. Billy first asked who was paying for it, and I told him my landlord (who has done business with him before) would be footing the bill, and he said he needed my landlord to call him. So, my landlord tried for about two hours to get in touch with him, and finally got a call back. After speaking to each other, he claimed he had never done business with my landlord. Then, my landlord called me and told me that, and just said if I would pay for the replacement that they would reimburse me. Great. Billy then called me right after, and told me again that he needed my landlord to call him. I reminded him that he did call him..and he responded with "oh yeah they said they got it all figured out". What does that even mean? Anyways, moving forward, I explained that we would be paying for it, but before I gave him my CC information I would like an estimate/range on how much it would be. He said he wouldn't give me one unless I sent him pictures. I told him I would send him pictures right away, and that I would really like this to get fixed today. He said that wouldn't be a problem. Since I'm at work, I had my roommate take pictures and then I sent them to him. No response. I called back thirty minutes later, only to be told by someone else that he can't give me an estimate until I send them pictures like he asked me to. I told them I did send them and to check their spam folder...sure enough, there they were. She said she would show him the pictures and have him call me back. Thirty minutes later, I called back, and she said she gave them to him but he was busy. Thirty minutes later, he gives me a call, and interrogates me about the lock - questions that I can't answer because I'm not currently at the apartment. He finally says it will be anywhere from $200-$300, and he can come by and give me a better estimate for $75. Fine, I said. Oh, and he wouldn't be able to come by until tomorrow at the earliest. I rest my case. I called another locksmith, got an estimate on the phone instantly and he's coming by this evening to fix it. Managed to break my key in the lock, dont ask how lol. Needed to get in ASAP so I called up Billy's, spoke to Billy Junior who informed he needed to do 2jobs and then might be able to swing by (was already late afternoon). Told him it was kinda an emergency and I'd appreciate it if would be possible to do the same afternoon, he'd give me a call asap. He called me 25m later asking if I was around as he finished his other job faster then expected and had 15m before his other one, so he was at my apartment LITERALLY 5m after that!
