My daughter drove a 3 hour round trip to make me a surprise with German lunch meats . I grow up in Germany and was so exited about bringing a little of Germany to me . This was Saturday , Today is Tuesday and I had to though away about 50$ worth of meat away . My daughter had all the lunch meat in a cooler filled with ice , so it could stay fresh . I'm part German, part Polish, so it's no exaggeration when I say that I love sausages. I've been wanting to go inside this store for years, but it always seemed like I was on the way somewhere else (like Franklin Square) when I would remember it existed. We finally made it a priority destination two weeks ago, only to discover that they are closed on Thursdays. We made a triumphant return this past week, and after decades of wondering what it was like inside, we made it into the store! Wow, it smells so good in there. Truthfully, I was a bit surprised by how small the shop is, but I haven't been in many butcher shops. The selection of wursts and other meats were baffling to me. We were given a piece of paper, like a menu, that told us what each sausage was, ingredients used, and how it should taste. I ended up with a pound of BAUERNWURST (SMOKED, WITH MUSTARD SEEDS). Oddly, enough, my boyfriend and I also went to the German Christmas Village in downtown Baltimore and they were serving the same kind of wurst at their grilled meat stand. I thought that the ones we cooked at home were better. We paired it with German potato salad for dinner. It was delicious and satisfying. My mother also bought a pound of the same sausage, but now refuses to eat it because she says that it contains beef. There's no sensible reason for her not to eat beef. She just does it to be contrary. She's certainly missing out on a taste sensation. I asked her if I could have her pound, but she refused. She's complex. She also got some BREAKFAST SAUSAGE (NUERNBERGER STYLE W/SWEET MARJORAM AND SAGE) which she absolutely loved. Binkert's in the Rosedale neighborhood of Baltimore has excellent meats just like you will find in Germany, they supply the meats to the Old Europe restaurant in Glover Park (Washington DC). They also carry rye bread. Give them a try, you will not be disappointed. Their pricing on the meats is also very reasonable. They are closed on Thursdays. read more

HOLY CRAP! If you're looking for quality German meats... look NO FURTHER! This is it! I always forget I'm a 15 ride from this store. It used to be a cash only store and they've recently changed over to taking cards which makes this even more dangerous for my wallet! Seriously though. This location has incredible fresh baked German breads, sausages of all kinds, teawurst, landjagers, liverwurst, and SO much more. The incredible fresh cut meats smell that you get when you walk in is breath taking... in a good way! Instead of heading to Giant, Safeway, Food Lion, or any other local grocery store, PLEASE give this place a shot for quality meat cuts. This isn't a steak house kind of situation, so don't get your hopes up there. They have a ton of sausages, dogs, and brats! Seriously, you need to try it out if you haven't. The best place in Baltimore to get German meats and sausages made right there on the premises and all fresh. There are other German products sold there also. They service many German restaurants in the area. I am luck since I live only 10 minutes away but would be well worth the drive to go there. Being first generation American of German decent and when we had many more German restaurants in the Baltimore area growing up mostly all gone today, it truly does bring back the German food flavor many of the older German's here in the area. read more

As a German native I felt like I had to visit this place. The location is a bit awkward out by Essex. At first I was a bit disappointed by how hard the pretzel I got was even though they were made right. The meat products however are amazing! I already ate almost half my sliced Leberkäse in the parking lot and the liverwurst is better and cheaper than "gourmet" whole foods'. Binkert's has the best German sausages around. I like that when you walk in, there is a selection of German grocery products on the counter. I love curry ketchup and the deli mustard in the little beer mugs. They sometimes carry German coffee brands Tchibo and Eduscho are my favorites. The sausages and liverwurst are phenomenal. The Bavarians are great for the grill and the Nurembergers are great for the breakfast table. I would love if Harzer cheese was a regular. I miss Hand Käse mit Muzik. When I lived in Annapolis, I would seek out Binkerts frankfurters that were only available in a couple of grocery stores because they are THE BEST! I have since moved nearby and can get all of their FABULOUS products. I feel so lucky! I now have to be gluten free. There are a few places I go in Baltimore to get quality foods. Binkert's is one of my favorites. You will literally smell the smoked foods from the road as you're driving up. They smoke in the back and the store is small with a few items on the shelves and coolers along with the deli counter. What I like: 1. Their hot dogs are awesome. We used to only get the frankfurters (long/skinny) but not prefer the shorter/fatter version. They cook up great on the grill. 2. Their lunch meats are amazing especially the bologna, salami and smoked pork. They have a lot of other traditional German items that others have mentioned but I usually stick to a few things. 3. German mustard in the glass container that looks like a small glass with a handle is the best I've ever had. I cannot use any other mustard now. 4. Their jerky hanging to the left behind the deli counter is really awesome! Never tried their bacon but it looks amazing so gotta try some time. 5. The bread they get in (I think from Canada) is really good. 6. Their workers are very nice and will let you try a piece of lunch meat before you commit to buy it. What I don't like: NOTHING TIP: They are cash or check ONLY p.s. Other specialty places I recommend are: Prima Foods (Greek - awesome cheese and olives), Trinacria (Italian but have not been there in awhile. Got turned off by one of the workers awhile ago), Punjab (Indian - great selection of spices) and Krakus Deli (Polish). Awesome German butcher shop with real deal sausages from the homeland. The bratwurst that we got were tasty but a little salty. The smaller nurnburger sausages were excellent. Prices are fair and ingredients are clearly labeled on all meat products. We were trying to avoid sodium nitrite and it was clearly labeled which sausages had it and which didn't. We stocked up on vacuum-sealed packages of weiswurst and bratwurst for the freezer. They also have good lunch meats as well and a selection of very German condiments (sauerkraut, mustards, little pickled thingys). It's a bit of a hike from central Baltimore City, but we combined a trip to Binkert's with a trip to Holabird Sports -- they're less than a mile apart. read more

I am reviewing the sausages from Binkert's only, not the shop itself. These are possibly the best German sausages I have ever had - and I've had the pleasure of having versions in Cleveland, Chicago, Madison, and Germany itself. Binkert's offers a selection of wurst to be envied - brats, of course, but also weisswurst (veal), bauernwurst (smoky!), nürnberger (w/ marjoram), knackwurst (mild), and debriziner (spicy). Oh, and don't forget the frankfurters - footlongs - which are definitely the BEST "hot dogs" I have ever eaten. These things are the real deal. An impressive selection. And according to an article on the place in the Baltimore Sun, the owner sources his meat (at least his pork) from Amish and Mennonite farmers in PA because he feels the quality of other meats is too low for his wurst. Once you've had Binkert's, those Johnsonville brats will never taste quite as good again! read more

The first thing you notice when you walk in the door is that this place smells awesome. I could just camp out and smell the smoked meats all day long. There's a handful of German and Bavarian prepared goods by the door, and there's freshly baked bread on rolling carts (grab a loaf with the provided towel and bag it yourself). But the thing that will catch your attention is the deli case and the rack of dried, cured, and smoked sausages and bacon behind the counter. Much of the deli cuts are made on site. Practically all of the sausages are. They cure and smoke their own bacon, too, and slice to order. The bacon smells incredible - like eyes roll back in your head good. I grabbed some Blutwurst (blood sausage), a loaf of Baviarian-style white bread, a jar of extra spicy Dusseldorf mustard, a half dozen Vienna-style frankfurters, a package of Weisswurst, and a pound of thick-cut bacon. Ran about $30. Which is impressive for fresh, locally made specialty deli. Binkert's goes on my regular rotation list. No question. If you want old-school delicatessen, you need to make a trip. Note: not easy to see from the road until you're almost past it. They're right next to the Royal Farms gas station. Another note: IMPORTANT - they are cash-only. The place is literally a mini-sausage factory with every thing freshly made on premises. I tried weiners, sausages and hams, the kassler is my favorite. Hands down the finest and most ethnic German deli from D.C. to Philly. They make all of their own sausages, wursts, weinners and various lunchmeats. I spent a few years in W. Germany and know the difference. They are the real deal. Try the weisewurst, a delicate white sausage or any of the brats. Ask to sample some smoked sausage while you're there. When I got married in Baltimore, my German mother-in-law insisted that we have blutwurst at our wedding reception and our savvy caterer got it at Binkert's. I trek out there every couple of months to stock up on their fantastic meats. I won't repeat the previous review of the wursts, which are spectatular but also encourage trying the fine liverwurst, salami (better than any Italian deli salami I've found in B-more), franks and my favorite, smoked pork chops (Kasseler, bone in is better than boneless). They also have the very dense square pumpernickel bread that is ubiquitous in Germany, and rye bread from a huge loaf that you can buy by the slice. My only disappointment is that they don't carry currywurst sauce, a Berlin speciality that I love. read more

I never visited their store but I buy their products (Bratwurst, Nuernberger, Landjaeger etc.). Since I grew up in Germany so I can testify that this is as authentic as it gets and very flavorful. The prices are not bad for the quality. I wish they would consider selling their products at the Potomac or Bethesda farmer's market. Balducci in Bethesda carries some of their products. read more
