A first time customer and I will return. Good butchers are, sadly, disappearing. I purchased spare ribs, NY Strips and Filet Mignons. The quality was excellent. I was impressed by the marbling on the Strips. The Filets were outstanding, too. One word of advice - ask the butcher to remove the silver skin off the back of the ribs. I was surprised it was on. Not a big deal, I'll know to ask next time. I look forward to trying their other cuts! read more

Today, Thursday, I get a text from a delivery guy that my perishable order was sitting on my carport. I texted him back to come get that rotten shit off my carport and delivery to me on Friday when I will be here because I took off work on Friday to receive this delivery. I've been a customer at Treuth's for many years, and over those years the products have been trending down in quality. I was there a couple of days ago and in my order, I requested a pound of the MARYLAND LUMP CRAB MEAT. What a rip-off at 65 dollars a pound! The container's contents could not be inspected because of the secure top. Fair enough if you trust the vendor. My order exceeded over $200 that day, as it usually does when I shop there. But when my wife opened the container - - - not a da*n lump of crab meat could be found... NOT ONE !!! And as for MARYLAND CRAB MEAT, the container shows: DISTRIBUTED BY BOATS AND HOSE SEAFOOD FISHING CREEK, MD. 21634. The operative word is "DISTRIBUTED". Now, this operation (Boats & Hose) is in Maryland, but the container does not state: MARYLAND CRAB. Hell, this crab-crap we had in the container was more like Yangtze River, China SPECIAL ---- for American suckers. Now, did I call Treuth's to complain? No. I don't want the hassle. Treuth's, however, has lost a long time customer (me) whos order normally exceeds $200 every time I walk in to that store. read more

I'm going to try to explain what is so special about the JW Treuth Experience, so bear with me. It's not just great products and service - it's a community feel. Example: I went on my usual every other week trip on Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Whoopsie!! When I arrived, there was a line outside ... it's a tiny shop inside, so I wasn't unduly alarmed. I went in, grabbed a number, and went back outside. Only to find that I was # 46 and they were only on #32. It was a cold, windy day and those of us huddled outside were - CHEERFUL! FRIENDLY! LAUGHING TOGETHER! And that's the magic of this family-owned business. There are many good reasons for such a place to stay in business for over 100 years. But IMHO, it's the shared experience of customers interacting with staff that really make it great. Second example: Today I went to buy our bi-monthly 5 lbs of bacon, but also tri-tip for my SIL's upcoming birthday weekend. Sadly, I was told they didn't have any. So I bought the bacon and walked out. Just getting buckled in to drive away, when I saw my butcher walk out the door, scoping out the cars, then walk towards me. I put the window down and he said, "I found some!" THAT, my friends, is beyond customer service. THAT is truly caring that your customers are not just satisfied, but happy. 4.5 Stars. We like the place and have shopped here for about ten years. The staff are helpful and courteous. Usually they are packed in weekends but with their very good practices in place for the virus the inside is limited to four customers. We tend to go on weekdays. It's a class act that has been in business a very long time. Last I heard the butchers still flew in from NYC on Sunday and worked through Thursday. In summer there can be an odor in the rear parking lot. The livestock is slaughtered on the premises though it's well away and not visible from the storefront. read more

At a time where the food industry has become so monopolized with mega producers, it is great to have a local abattoir. There is no doubt about the quality of products, but more importantly Treuth is a local company in Oella (locates between Catonsville and Old Ellicott City) that serves the best meat and seafood in the region for over 100 years. You may pay a little more at times, BUT you will never get a better quality and freshness. If you are unsure of what to get, as I was, try one of their meat samplers and savor a variety of different cuts, types, etc. I am fortunate to live in their delivery area and enjoy their door to door service from staff that really care and communicate well. read more

I bought a meat sampler box and 2 pounds of extra ground chuck, it wasn't cheap like the grocery store or the big box stores. The meat is all USA procured, the beef is from local producers, this is supporting local farmers and businesses. I have lived in the area for over 20 some years, never heard of them until a few weeks ago. So I made an order and wish I had done sooner, wow.. The quality is so much better that even the high end grocery stores. I don't mind paying more for superior quality and this place has it. We've been shopping at Treuth's for years. Most of what we've purchased has been of excellent quality. We occasionally got a dud, such as a prepackaged brisket which was 1/3 fat because it wasn't properly trimmed. Unfortunately, the duds have become far more frequent over the past few years. The pandemic only exacerbated the issue. Customer service is now non-existent for pickup and delivery issues. Most recently, I placed a delivery order, which we finally received 4 days later. I'd ordered short ribs from the site. What I received were flanken, or Korean, flat ribs. I emailed Treuth's about the discrepancy, and as nearly always before, received absolutely no response. At this point, I've decided that I'd rather pick out exactly what I want at a regular grocery store. I'm tired of the meat roulette that Treuth's has been playing over the past few years. read more

It does not get any fresher than this in this area. How can I say that. Because there is a slaughterhouse on the premise of this place. The freshness of the food reminds me of some places overseas or here in the U.S. where they actually prepare their meat fully. The prices are not bad at all. You can get various fresh ground chuck, steaks, pork, and chicken that is readily available but the butchers are more than willing to cut it to your liking. And yes these guys are real butchers. The place is a bit small so prepare yourself to have your personal space invaded. I have only been here a few times but every time I have gone this place constantly has customers but the wait has never been more than 15 minutes. This all depends on those in front of you. Hopefully those in front of you know what they are ordering. You know how it is in the self checkout but the person in front of you has no idea of how it works. I got a couple of cuts and chicken, so far so good on the ones i have tried. In early November 2021, my family ordered a fresh turkey from JW Treuth's via phone, which this vendor confirmed. The day before Thanksgiving, when we arrived for pickup, we were dismayed that Treuth's did not have a turkey for us, leaving us scrambling at the last minute. Foolishly, we gave Treuth's another shot this year, but with lessons learned in mind, confirmed 3 weeks in advance via email that it would be possible to reserve a bird, which Treuth's confirmed in writing. Treuth's inept staff - determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory - informed us this morning that they again failed, and do not have a turkey for us. More appalling than JW Treuth's dysfunction is the poor attitude of their employees and failure of their ownership to pay attention to customers. When we attempted to pick up our turkey today, the woman we interacted with named Jessica not only advised us they didn't have the reserved bird, but upon being met with our disbelief, had the temerity to sarcastically ask, "what do you want me to do, grow a turkey for you?" Nice attitude. Jessica mystifyingly informed us the business "does not do online orders," and asked us who at JW Treuth's would have sent us an email confirming an order in these circumstances. Ironically, the email was *from* Jessica, so it appears JW Treuth's not only provides horrible customer service and obnoxious sarcasm on demand, but they're disorganized. Upon being presented with her own email, Jessica was no more helpful or less rude than she was before this moment. When asked if the owner could contact us (for the purpose of having a customer loyal to his business for decades express displeasure with this two year streak of buffonery), Jessica advised he is unavailable to speak with customers. Evidently, he has more important things to do on a day central to keeping his business in the black. My advice: take your money and spend it at any butcher in Baltimore other than JW Treuth's. This business has devolved to complete uselessness and if they persist in these practices, we'll absolutely delight in watching this family business fail. JW Treuth's is absolute crap. read more

They can and do get very busy so plan accordingly. Due to COVID line forms outside as only so many are allowed in the store at a time. They do offer call ahead curbside. read more

JW treaty has been my butcher for about 20 years now, my grandma started me coming here and I never left. This shop does their own slaughter, and the slaughter comes from the tristate region and the only deal with select Amish and Mennonite farms that raise the cattle, pigs etc . There meat is so fresh and so Good for a good price it's not overpriced ! I only get my beef and pork products from them and during the holidays the fresh kill turkeys .. the staff know their customers as well! Even though it's crazy busy at time the atmosphere is very light and friendly. They are never hasty or short . Heck they even know you order before you do most times! They do have a no cell phone policy so that the customers can be alert , I do not find that to problematic.. it's actually a plus . Over the years the quality has been consistent and again prices are fair in comparison to supermarkets in the neighborhood prices. Oh before I forget on Saturdays locals have a farmers market outside the store and on Tuesday is senior discounts.... and for thanksgiving they do fresh kill turkeys but you have to preorder. Free calendars, and stress cows lol they will give you freezer bags .. the meat is wrapped in butchers paper do no freezer burn. They make a brisket that is to die for , doggie treats .. Actually I like abattoir better, it sounds undefiled....he he he Anywho, I've heard about this place before, and then totally forgot about it. I was reminded again whilst I was getting my mani/pedi on yesterday. Get on Oella, travel down some winding roads and Bam! There it is! Look, lately the meat in the major grocery stores have been a little wonky and what not. I mean have you heard of pink slime? Have you ever gotten meat that just wasn't that fresh? Oh you haven't, well I have. Yuck. I have no time to be sick from bad meat. Can't get any better than having Porky the Pig, and Claude the Cow wacked out back and served to out front. The folk here are hella knowledgeable and will slice your meat right....he he he he. I'm sittin' here, chowing on some serious beef from JW Treuth and Sons - a porterhouse grilled medium over hardwood charcoal - and I cannot express how kick-ass this steak is. When I saw 'em in the case, they were smiling at me: nicely trimmed, well-marbled, and just begging to be brushed with a little olive oil, sprinkled with salt and pepper, and subjected to blistering heat on my backyard BBQ pit. Treuth's is a real goddamn butcher shop. Actually, an abattoir and butcher shop - dinner goes in the back on the hoof and comes out the front in brown friggin' paper. Full service retail counter - cut to order, any part of the cow. Prices are similar to the megamart, but the quality is so, so, so much better. The counter staff are meat experts, helpful as anything, and know the locals. Want beef, pork, or lamb? Haul your sorry ass out to Oella and see these folks. I will tell you get ready to mingle. You will get packed tight in this place! It is small and can get crazy busy! It does move fast though. People are friendly and do make best of the situation. The cuts of meat are top quality. Fresh as all hell. You can take these bad boys home burn em on the grill(you betta not though!?) and it will still slice up nicely! Unless you cook that shit down to a hockey puck at which point you will need to re gift that grill that you don't know how to use properly! All in all this place is legit. Best local butcher around. You cannot beat the quality and value of an abattoir with a retail counter attached. From their package deals, if you have room in the freezer, to their individual offerings, they have the best deals in town. The prices of their meat are actually on average or cheaper than most mega-marts but the quality is AMAZING in comparison. They offer fish, chicken, pork, beef, rabbit and more..... All as fresh as possible........ So, if you're a carnivore, go to J.W. Treuth & Sons, buy yourself a nice steak, throw it on the grill and treat yourself to a piece of meat that will kick the snot out of the stuff they charge you beyond top dollar for at the "premier steak houses". read more

Anyone who wants a meat adventure should drive to J.W. Treuth & Sons -- just up the road from Ellicott City in Oella. This is the retail part of a company that sells beef to butchers and restaurants from Boston to Richmond and even overseas. The wholesaler is super-modern, boasting about both its kosher products and its special service whisking just-slaughtered eyes, glands, brains "and more" to medical researchers at NIH and Hopkins. In contrast, the J.W. Treuth store is out of the past. It's in Baltimore County on a two-lane road off Rte 144 that alternates between commercial lots and older homes. Inside, there is just a long counter and enough room to check out the wares. And the wares are the reason to drive to J.W. Treuth. All kinds of beef cuts, chicken, seafood, at least four varieties of house-made sausages. Everything is reasonably priced, and everything that I tried was delicious. I made a special dinner with a fillet and four enormous scallops. The fillet was tender, but had a real beef flavor that is just missing from cheaper joints. The scallops were sweet, pretty much on the level of my standard Today's Catch in Columbia. read more

The people behind the counter were friendly and helpful (the lady helping me even gave me a free pound of bacon as a thank you!), and the selection of meats was expansive. I also met a gentleman in the store who said he has been coming to this butcher for 50 years, which was incredible to hear. I got two NY Strip Steaks, some ground beef and bacon (based off recommendations I had seen online). I cooked the steaks that night and they were DELICIOUS - bursting with flavor and melt in your mouth. I made burgers with the ground beef that I am dying to grill up this weekend. I would love it if JW Treuth sold organic meats, but they don't. Being a butcher worthy of the name, however, they DO know how to make a perfect crown roast. Try - just TRY, I dare you - to ask your grocery store butcher to do that, and see what you get back. Even the meat counter at Whole Foods is going to disappoint you on that one, I promise. Which is sad, really, because one should still be able to obtain a beautifully butchered crown roast in this world. Because a beautifully-butchered crown roast, with remarkably little effort, becomes a beautifully prepared and plated crown roast, which elicits gasps and twinkly eyes from one's dinner guests when brought to the table. Gasps and twinkly eyes. There's not nearly enough of those in this world, either. Treuth's has been butchering and selling meat in Catonsville long enough for their abbatoir out back to be grandfathered in under the zoning rules. (Honestly, when was the last time you saw an abbatoir in YOUR neighborhood?) That qualifies it as a Baltimore fixture. It's well worth the trip down the back roads and back through time to find it. read more

Wow. It might be hidden, and known by only locals, but what a find this place is to those in the know. Trueths has been in business since... well, it seems like forever. They have their own slaughterhouse on premises, so you can't get beef much fresher then they have here. With offerings from deli meats, to fresh, delicious tenderloin, to even wild caught rock fish, this hidden treasure is a one stop candy store for meat lovers. The friendly, knowledgeable and easy going staff is ready to answer any questions. With reasonable prices, you will regret going to any Supermarket in the future once you see the selection they have available. It might be a little bit out of the way, but it is WELL worth the trip. read more
