There is plenty of parking and they even have their own street, appropriately named Hope Drive. There is also valet parking that is free for first time patients. However, all of that is changing on 9/1/20 because they will be doing construction for 2 years to build a parking garage. I recommend looking on their website for updates. Since we are living the covid life these days there are no visitors allowed to the patients. All donors must pass the water fountain and the white valet tents and go just in the door to get questioned about covid. When I came a couple times my iron was too low. I recommend anyone donating to eat healthy meals and ladies, maybe avoid it on the days of your period. The first time I was rejected I had just finished my period. So, when I donate I ask for an orange card first just to check my iron before I have to fill out the much longer blue card. My moms friend's life was saved here many years ago and, although they weren't able to save my loved one's life recently, they tried their best and I do think they prolonged her life. The most touching thing I have seen here is that many nurses and other employees are donating their own blood and platelets to their patients. Five nurses donated to my loved one and that is so touching! So, this place lives up to its name. It really is a place of hope.

So fast forward a couple weeks and now I have the experience of donating whole blood and platelets through City of Hope. The process is similar at check in but the machines and donation duration times are different. Do some research and see what you're able to do and what fits your schedule. From City of Hope's website: "Because of the seriousness of the cases treated at City of Hope, our patients need more blood and platelets than patients at any other major medical center surveyed in Southern California." City of Hope uses approximately 37,000 units of whole blood and platelets a year so you can imagine the demand for donors. I like donating directly to facilities so they can save some money from buying stock from third parties. On the first floor you can look through the window and see what's in stock for the whole facility to use, it's always very serious to see how low stocks are. Platelets are in high demand due to patients' needs and to their shorter shelf life. City of Hope is very appreciative to their donors: designated parking just for donors, fast processing for both walk-ins and appointments, warm blankets and heat packs, personal TVs and headphones, the best snacks, seasonal raffles, and small gifts (T-shirts, In-n-out and Starbucks giftcards, Baskin Robbins pint, Regal movie ticket). Staff and volunteers are excellent in care and make you feel comfortable, very important if it's your first or hundredth time. If you're thinking of donating serious consider coming to City of Hope's Blood Donor Center, one of the best gifts a patient here can receive for the upcoming holidays!

The woman not in scrubs began my blood draw process while the woman in scrubs went to the restroom. She inserted the needle- did not tell me that she was going to insert, no "take a big breath in", "you'll feel a slight prick", etc. She inserted the needle and did not hit a vein, she proceeded to move the needle around in my arm which caused a lot of discomfort. I winced multiple times. The woman in scrubs came out of the restroom and the other woman immediately asked her to reposition the needle that was in my arm. She then continues to move the needle around in my arm until it hits something VERY painful. I yelped and she then said she would take it out. She was in the middle of pulling out the needle, I'm wincing and expressing extreme discomfort, and the girl not in scrubs asks me to confirm my date of birth. I understand needing the information but it did not feel like an appropriate time. The vein in my right elbow is positioned sideways and the woman in scrubs said she did not feel comfortable continuing. I have never had problems with blood draws in my right/sideways vein so that in addition to the unsuccessful left arm draw made me feel that they were both in need of training by an appropriate source. It felt that the woman in scrubs was the lead phlebotomist of the two but with the mistakes and nerves presented in both, additional training is needed so this does not happened to anyone else. I will not be returning to donate blood at this location.

I was here several months ago, and (it happened again when I recently visited) the laptop kicked me out when I got to a certain part of the questionnaire. Instead of just signing me back in, the woman seemed impatient, and without saying anything, proceeded to fill it in for me, asking me the questions. I thought that was condescending. Also, both employees were engaged in conversation with each other while I was there. I'm glad my experience this time was better, as I'd considered not donating there again, even if it was the closest location to me.

The staff is very nice here and always make sure that all the donors are treated properly. They are well trained and in my 8 years of coming here they have always hit the vein in one puncture. In some other places I went to it has taken multiple tries for phlebotomists to find my vein. I used to donate whole blood here, but I switched to doing platelets in 2021. They have more advanced apheresis machines now where only one arm is needed, because the blood can be drawn and returned through the same needle. This allows you to use one hand for activities so you can use a phone or laptop. Overall, donating blood is a very important thing and something that can help many cancer and accident victims. I'm thankful that the staff here gave us the chances to be able to save the lives of others.

I wouldn't go back to this place even if I got paid to & I will be praying that if I ever need a transfusion, these people have not touched it. They wasted my time & my blood, but at least I didn't leave with two sprained ankles this time.. __________________________ 2023: I passed out after donating (had never happened to me before, obviously not ideal, but can happen to anyone, is a known risk, whatever). The way they handled it was awful. I was in the bathroom, pulled the alarm, unlocked the door so I could be reached more easily, & sat down in the chair. I heard them come up to the door, open it, not see me in the chair off to the side, and say "oh it must've been a drill", then LEAVE. I don't remember because things started to go black around this time, but I think I yelled or threw something to get their attention as I was passing out. They caught me as I was falling out of the chair so that I didn't hit my head (v grateful for that!), but the way they caught me sprained both my ankles as I fell. Had they responded appropriately to the alarm, my ankles could've been spared. Then they had me SITTING UP the whole time I was "waking up"- going in and out of consciousness. It was a terrible feeling to know I needed to lie down, surrounded by several healthcare professionals all doing the wrong thing, but not awake enough to communicate nor move myself. They were trying to force feed me food & liquid as I was in & out of consciousness (!). Even non-medical folks know to lay someone down after they've passed out... and to not feed someone who isn't fully conscious... I spoke w/someone in charge (some man, don't remember who) after that experience, gave them feedback on all the ways that went wrong. They promised to revisit their training, acknowledged that what happened was unacceptable, etc. I felt as okay as I could after that. Last week: It took me 2.5 years to go back to donating after that traumatic experience, and I decided to give the same donation center another shot- they have such a good rep, & they seemed sincere about doing better. Really wish I stayed home. The moment I walked into the center, the vibes were OFF. The reception desk area had like 8 staff chatting, not paying attention to people walking up to check in, & seemed v chaotic. Each of them thought someone else had spoken to me already. I was rushed through the intake process, then had to sit anxiously in the chair for a long time bc they didn't label the bags correctly. Then had to switch chairs. Then the nurse f'd something up, the needle hurt a lot going in & had to be wiggled around (bruised a bunch). Those things aren't a huge deal, but again, I'm anxious AF & passed out last time I was there, so was really hoping this would be quick/easy. AFTER A WHOLE GALLON OF MY BLOOD LEFT MY BODY, someone came up to ask what meds I'm on (not in private). Informs me that one is on their deferral list. I say no its not?! I reviewed the list multiple times, including when I checked in! Then they show me an INTERNAL list that the public can't see (?!) which shows a 30-day deferral period for one of the meds I'm on. I pointed out I've been on this med (and/or another on their list) for many yrs, so that means my 2023 donation was ~contaminated~ as well. They did not seem concerned. Super sad my blood won't go to a patient. I was near tears & had to ask what would happen to it, if it was getting wasted. I was told it would "go to research"-no other details. Wish I could have it back! Still feel lethargic & the bruise on my arm keeps getting darker, ha. The call I received back this time felt like lip service & I did not feel heard, nor like my concerns were being taken seriously. I asked to be called back by the director but received a call back from a fellow. The individual who did my intake was being blamed (which, sure, she should've asked about meds) but there are clearly bigger issues going on in pre-screening, process, training etc. When I brought up concerns about my past donation, I was told that the donation hadn't been used. When I was upset about not being told that, she looked it up & said it had been. I expressed my concern about that and was told "well the person who got that donation was really sick so it doesn't matter"....??? Trying to figure out what board or where to report this since as I mentioned... big concerns for peoples' safety!
