The Community Blood Center in Overland Park has always been able to get me in, process my paperwork quickly, provide generally skilled phlebotomists, and send me on my way. I donate as regularly as I can (once every 56+ days for whole blood) and it's easy to make an appointment online and schedule my donation around my free time. Plus, hey, free snacks! The CBC also holds frequent giveaways, like t-shirts or baseball tickets, and that only requires your time and donation. The CBC collects those life-saving donations virtually every day, sometimes even on holidays. If I have any knock, then it is about the process of 'encouraging' me to make an appointment. As a regular donor, the CBC knows that I am willing to come back in again and they make it a practice to notify me when I am eligible. By notify, I mean mildly harass (email, texts, calling me) and that's just too much for me. It's clear that they want my O- because all God's babies can use my blood! But I'm there to GIVE and the CBC makes that process as easy and as comfortable as they can. I love being able to schedule a twinsie session with my wife, do our giving, have snacks, and then make a lunch date out of it. You can do that, too, but bring your own significant other. The CBC has locations around the metro, but this spot is accessible, friendly, and waiting for you to give.

I wish I had remembered her name, but I do know she mentioned that the Red Cross was sending her to Washington DC for a Red Cross cultural event. My first impression came from the front desk receptionist, and it wasn't a good one, she was cold and unwelcoming. My husband donates here regularly and mentioned that she's always like that. I was already a bit nervous going in, especially after witnessing a woman pass out following her donation. Throughout the process, none of the nurses spoke to me, though they had no problem chatting with each other. A few also had large nose rings hanging from their nostrils, which struck me as unprofessional in a healthcare setting. When my donation was finished, I was simply told goodbye, no one advised me to grab a snack, have a drink, or sit for a few minutes to make sure I felt okay, which seems especially important for a first-time donor. Thankfully, my husband had told me what to expect ahead of time. Overall, the experience felt surprisingly impersonal and unprofessional. I left feeling unwelcome and with no desire to return.

I would advise anyone who travels to go somewhere else…read more I traveled to a number of safe countries on a cruise to Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal and was denied the opportunity to donate blood. When I called to complain, I was given a number to another facility where the person said that this Olathe center had made a mistake and that visits to these countries were completely acceptable. I called back the Olathe center and was not able to be transferred to a supervisor to resolve the error. The center persists in calling and texting me to give blood but will not take the time to fix their error. The Red Cross has a nearby facility which I would recommend instead.
