I've never really looked into plasma donation before--always thought it was kind of Fugazi, LMFAO…read more But after hearing from close friends and family who donate regularly, I figured I'd give it a shot. They all described it as quick, painless, and seamless... well, my experience was the complete opposite. I booked my appointment for 1:30 PM at what's supposedly the highest-rated facility in my area. I arrived on time, completed the check-in process, and was told it wouldn't be long before I could start. Fast forward two hours later--at 3:30 PM--I was finally called back to begin the actual donation process. And that's where the nightmare started. The technician who assisted me didn't seem confident at all. He asked if I had my veins checked (which I had), then proceeded to poke around trying to find a vein. I originally requested my left arm, but after struggling for a while, he said he couldn't find a vein and switched to my right arm instead. No problem--at this point, I just wanted to get things going. The first needle insertion? Immediate, sharp pain. I could tell by his face that something wasn't right, but he tried to continue. A few minutes later, he started poking and pressing around again, then informed me he had to redo the poke because of a blown vein or blood clot. By this time, I was already irritated. I don't even like needles, and now we're going for poke #2. He called over another staff member, and she immediately said he did it wrong and that they'd have to stick me again. Poke #3. Still no luck. Now my right arm is swollen, bruised, and throbbing in pain. The technician? He just walked away to help another patient, leaving me with another staff member. She tries my left arm this time--at this point, I'm just hoping to be done with this mess. She pokes once, but even she has to call another associate over because they still can't get things flowing properly. By now, it's poke #5, and I've had enough. Both my arms feel swollen and sore, and I told them straight up--if this doesn't work, I'm done. A third associate comes over, takes one look, and says, "Yeah, this isn't going to work." So after five failed needle sticks, nearly three hours of my time wasted, and zero dollars in compensation, I walked out feeling completely defeated. It's a shame because plasma donation is such an important thing for those who need it, and I truly wanted to do my part. But after this horrible experience, I'll never attempt this again. If this is the best facility in the area, I don't even want to know what the worst one is like. Final Thoughts: If you're considering donating here, think twice. Maybe I just had terrible luck, but after what I went through, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

I decided I needed to take a CPR class before the baby comes, and I needed to get it out of the way…read morebefore I get too big to do all the practice stuff on the dummies. I'm so glad I took the time to do it, and Red Cross was definitely the right choice for me. I recruited my sister and sister-in-law to go with me, since they had both mentioned they'd be interested. We took Adult and Pediatric CPR and First Aid. It was $110, and it took about 4 hours online, which you had to complete before going to the two hour evening class. I grumbled about how long the online portion took, but in the end, I realized I learned a lot from those simulations and I felt very prepared for the classroom portion. Our teacher, Vertina, was just the right mix of helpful and funny, and she really knew her stuff. This is one of those things you hope you'll never need to use, but it still provides a lot of peace of mind. If you do it, I definitely recommend doing it with friends.

Get your CPR certification on!…read more I'm required to have this certification for work, but who could hurt from knowing basic first aid and lifesaving skills? This is my 10th or so time being certified over the years (certifications last 2 years) and I never get tired of it. It's a lot like riding a bicycle, you may not do it all the time but when you never really forget. All the instructors I have ever met have been very knowledgeable and informative and kept the training easy, casual and comfortable. Hopefully you'll never need to use what you learn here, but in the event that you do, you can make a huge difference in the life of others.
