Bruise

Nothing but Stupid kids that don't know what they are doing. They're training isn't long enough at all. It's like they take anyone off the street and let them work here. I've been donating here for over 3+ years and have never had this issue. I got two huge bruises on my arms because the kid didn't know what he was doing. Couldn't find my vein on my left arm so he said we have to stick the other arm. Guess what happened... yup you're right, the idiot couldn't find that vein either. I was then deferred for two weeks because that duma$$ put two huge bruises in my arms. So now I couldn't donate for something THAT WASN'T MY FAULT! See pictures for proof. Y'all Need to get their sh*t together so return donors can actually come back.

The last half of that time has been at this center, and it's leagues above the other plasma center I've tried.

One of their ads caught my attention on FB, so I called to clarify the process, to minimize…read moresurprises. Whoever answered the "new patient" line was friendly and knowledgable, causing me to feel comfortable enough to come in for the first time. Luckily there were quite a few appt. times available, so I booked this past Wednesday to come in in the early afternoon. The location is super convenient for me, and they have a big parking lot. It is always packed when I've visited, but I never had an issue finding spots. There were a lot of people when I got there which made me feel a little less nervous. Most of them were pretty young, even the people working the place including the nurses and the people who stick you. The front desk ladies on Wednesday were pretty on point. They explained the first steps and answered all my questions. Most of them were welcoming. MOST. I waited a little bit to get my identity verified and to take the 30min questionnaire (re: health history, privacy, etc.) I had quite a few clarifying questions about the questionnaire, but the nurse answered all of them. The physical was non-intrusive and explained up front. I was assigned a donation section, and a very nice lady did an excellent job sticking me painlessly. I was pretty surprised because the nurse had said it was a pretty big needle. I wish they told you up front you're going to have to "pump" your fist while the machine takes your blood because my nails were killing me when I did so. I asked for something to squeeze (since I saw a lady with a stress ball), and they gave me wadded up, latex gloves that were better than nothing, but got pulverized real quick. Once hooked up, I thought all was smooth sailing, and then the machine started beeping and went off after only a couple minutes. Apparently the blood was having a tough time going back into my body, so they wanted to switch arms. I told them that the nurse earlier said the veins on my other arm were not ideal, so I didn't know if that would even work. They said, "Let's try any way". We switch arms, and the machine kept beeping and shutting off every couple minutes. I noticed my arm starting to bubble, and they told me I was developing a hematoma and had to stop the process. Three days later, my arm is still pretty dang bruised, but they told me how to treat it. I asked if it was anything I could have helped, and they said no, not really, except to be super hydrated. I was? I was there for over three hours my first day, but I only stayed on the machine a fraction of the time. We did not get close to finishing, and they couldn't return all my blood. I asked if I should even try to come back, and they said they recommend coming back at least a second time since they throw away everything I had just donated because they have to test the first donation to my second. Today is Saturday (three days after the first appt.) I called the "current patient" line over 4 hours before my appt. today to see if I should still come in since my arm is bruised still. No one picked up, and I left a voicemail. No one ever returned my call. I drove there 30mins before my appt. time to ask in person. Brittni at the front desk was completely opposite of the Wednesday staff that I was brightly greeted by. I say hello, and she just looks back down and says in a monotone, "What's your appt. time?" She looked like she was put out by being there. I tell her when it is, then that I'm not sure if I should donate and showed her my arm. She said if it was still sore, then probably not. I told her I had called hours before about this, but she didn't blink an eye. She said I could go talk to the nurse "if u want". I talk to the nurse who had the same sort of apathetic attitude as Ms. Brittni over here. He said my bruising wouldn't go away for at least a few more days and to keep putting hot compresses on it. I go back up front to tell Brittni I need to cancel, and she says again like a monotone parrot, "What's your appt. time?" even though I just spoke to this chick 2 minutes ago. Sheesh. And it wasn't nearly as busy as it was Wednesday. I tell her again and that the nurse told me I couldn't donate. "Can you please cancel my appt.?" She says, "Eh, it doesn't really matter." I say, "Okay, thanks." She says nothing. Man, Brittni sucks as a front desk person. I've been told I have small veins by RedCross, so I think my experience was a one-off. It seemed like everyone else was having a much smoother time of it. Wednesday staff was much better than Saturday staff it seemed. They didn't seem to give a sh*t. So, if you got big ol' veins, I think it could be worth your time. It's key to bring your own stress ball and your own entertainment (for waiting around and especially for when they're drawing blood). I would avoid plug-in headphones in case they drape the blood tubes over you like they had to do with me (when they switched arms) since they kept getting all entangled every time my machine stopped.

Most of staff seemed ok and personal. Nearly passed out due to unclear instructions though. Theres…read morea reason they have sucky low ratings for sure.

I'm about to quit donating. I'm tired of being flooded with calls from them. Text and email first…read moreof all. But every time I go. I do the rapid pass prior. But they're always running late worse than a Dr office. Even first thing in the morning. So I wait from 30 min to a hr together started. Then all the reparative paper work. It's getting old fast. I haven't quit yet. Because I know blood is needed.

The Red Cross offers the most comprehensive Adult First Aid / CPR / Automated External…read moreDefibrillator (AED) Certification there is ... and most respected. While I was a little ticked to find out that there wasn't a class in the SLC area in all of March, I hoofed it out to Provo to their Red Cross class. The facility isn't much to write home about, but they have all the equipment to get top-flight training. Their training is "blended", meaning you spend most of the time learning online, then you come to class to put into practice what you've learned. The training was conducted by Ted Bisping, who did a good job not just with the material, but "real-life" scenarios he had personally experience. We spent half the class in expanding on the basics, the second practicing scenarios. Of course, there was work on the CPR dummies (clean, shiny, and brand-spanking new!) You really have to put this part in action because there's a lot of physicality when giving around 100 compressions a minute! For the First Aid, we worked with partners on treating severe wounds. Bloody good training, so-to-speak. They also had a baby / child CPR section that used baby dummies. I was also a little ticked the thing was scheduled for an hour, and it ran 90+. After getting out of the stuffy room and home and getting my certificate, I was a little more pleased with the whole experience. Move over Fray, the Red Cross is the best place to learn How To Save A Life.

The first six times donating plasma it was a fairly simple process. Of course you have to fill out…read morethe annoying questionnaire but that is understandable. Once finished with the questionnaire you have to wait again to get blood draw, weighed, temperature, blood pressure, etc. then wait again... for a card, to go into the 3 different colored sections. The first 6 plasma draws went well. The last 2 plasma draws were a disaster. I have a huge bruise from two weeks ago. Thursday, the phlebotomist wasn't able to get a blood draw. I've always been told that I have really good veins. Thursday, the phlebotomist tried to change the needle into my other arm but I had the card which said only the left arm. Then she tried telling me that she noticed my veins didn't look good. This was a total lie as I've never had a problem with getting blood draws or plasma before. And I saw the nurse prior to being seated in her area.
